I live in Suceava, the former capitol city of Moldavia, and during my school times, we learned a lot about Stephan the Great and those times. He was the best military strategist, hands down, and because of this, he ruled Moldavia for 47 years, being second after Carol I, who ruled for 48 years, in the late 1800's - early 1900's. Stephan had his share of losses (albeit a few), mainly because being heavily outnumbered. His battle and war strategies were superior to anyone else, Poles, Hungarians, even Franks and Gemanic people. Luck had never played any role, and the man fought over 50 major battles during his rule, and a bunch of smaller ones, losing only 2. He was the master of guerilla warfare, tactical and fake retreats, multiple front engagements, luring enemy troops, terrain strategist, etc. etc. He was hundreds of years ahead in terms of military startegy, this is why he managed to rule 47 years, a very small country (300-400k total population), having only 6-7k professional soldiers. Over 60% of his army was basically peasants (usually 10-15k, depending on the time of the conflict - Summer being harvest time). However, those peasants, after 4-5 major battles, became at least semi-professional soldiers, hence, his army, after 5 years, was mainly a professional army. He won a lot of battles being outnumbered 2 to 1, which in those times was a lot...but his professional soldiers outnumbered the enemy professional soldiers. Paired with guerilla warfare (his soldiers were extremely good at this), terrain advantage and multiple front engagements, it's no surprise that he managed to keep Moldavia undefeated for nearly 47 times. Even if the history books don't present him as a warrior, the man had war in his blood. He was present at every single battle...not sitting on a chair on a hill giving orders, but leading the troops. And this is how he died. An infected battle wound marked his end.
The visualisation of the battle was one the best strategic perfomances i ever saw. The thing with with the war drums and the showcase of the confusion was really great. A very big congrats, this is really really great.
As a matter of fact, the Ottomans later on till today (Turkish republic) admire stefan for his bravery and brilliant military tactics. His personal sword kept with much respect in Topkapi palace.
@@igeneleux3019 Meeh, was just a little joke. While that sword of Stephen The Great is something Romanians deserve to have, and considering the fact that it is not known how the sword actually got there (could have been captured after a battle or could have been offered as a gift from Stephen's son to befriend the Ottoman Empire), I do understand the reasons the Turkish Government would not give it back (create a precedent and thus other countries asking for stuff the Ottomans acquired during their conquers). Btw, that sword is 1.25 meters long and very unwieldy.
I totally agree with you, Dustin. By the way, his full historical name is Stefan the Great and the Saint as the Romanian Orthodox Church sanctified him for being the greatest Christian warrior of Romania and one of the bravest Holly Cross defenders of Europe in his time. We owe Stefan the Great to a great extent the fact we are still Christians in these parts of the world and we still speak our ancient version of Latin that is the Romanian language. Cheers!

Did he greatly contributed to the salvation of his state, Moldova, to avoid becoming the next Bosnia or Albania? No discussion about that, in all respects, security, culture, policy of alliances etc. 4. Was he sanctified by the Romanian Orthodox Church? The Orthodox Christians of whole nation pray to him. 5. That’s just a legend. He built the monasteries after he made peace with the ottomans in 1484. He began a massive construction program which lasted till the end of his rule.
Not only that, but he actually gave every soldier a very special and potent royal wine, a dark red one called "Singe de Voinic" - "Blood of the brave", which is said it would give vigor to the warriors and take their fears away, so they would fight without fear, like possessed.
Hmm. did they use sackbutts and krumhorns too, in addition to the kettle drums? These instruments were often used in Renaissance warfare to intimidate the enemy.
Stefan the Great is celebrated as a Saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Along side with Constantin Brancoveanu, Neagoe Basarab. He was called " The Athelete Of Christ ". He also defeated the Hungarian, Poles, Tatars. He raised a Monastery for every victory he ever had. His Spiritual Father was saint Danil Sihastrul ( Danil the Hermit) , which he consulted every time.

Bruv, that CH in Valachia is pronounced like K or KH. Similar to Kh in Khan. At least that was the way we pronounced it in moldovan school in the late 90s.
Stefan III did great moves, to a very strong enemy; he handled the terrain and the information flow efficiently, very similar to mongols at their best. I really enjoyed the details of the battle, keep going, friend.
Funny you mention them, the mongols also invaded Moldova in the time of Stefan III, he defeted them to. When everyone around you is a major empire and wants your land, you either get verry eficient at fighting or get wiped out. Just look at Afganistan...
"In war, events of importance are the result of trivial causes." Stefan was a truly capable commander, who could exploit tactics, weather and terrain to his successful battle.
Indeed, even without the fog the valley where the battle took place is surrounded by hill slopes and thick forest. A perfect place for an ambush of a larger army - if you know how to coordinate one.
Great video. I truly learned a lot about one of history's less well-known yet most capable rulers and generals. Stefan clearly understood the importance that maneuver, deception, topography, and meteorology had upon the battlefield.
He's arguably one of the best Romanian Principality rulers. But he was also quite fears. He was well known for beheading the Boieri that wavered or plotted against him. That was likely due to the traumatic childhood he had. His father was assassinated before him and there's another cool legend that you should check out about his childhood. Google The Oak from Borzesti Church.

@@SergheyCSA What the hell are you smoking lol? He defeated the Mongol empire? The Mongol Empire fell 130 years before Stephen was even born. Hungarian empire? There was no such thing. Nor was there a Polish empire. And he hasn't defeated these powers per se, he just repelled their invasion. When you say "defeated Poland" for instance, it means that he actually took down the goddamn kingdom, which he hasn't. So, he didn't really defeat Poland, or Hungary, or the Ottoman empire, he just repelled their invasions. You go too sleep mate. Besides, you seem to not be able to get my point. Wow! Not to familiar with this battle but that was one of the top ambushes I’ve heard of. And for the time period, unbelievable! Thank you for covering this one. Moldavia taking on the Ottomans !
Stephan the Great was a military genius. He employed military tactics like guerilla warfare and tactical retreats on a whole new level. Hundreds of years ahead his time. Sure, guerilla warfare was used since before Roman Empire, but Stephan made it an art. The way he used guerrilla warfare was similar to Napoleonic Wars, 300 years later.
Forgive my fellow romanian patriotic fanatics. They tend to watch too many exaggerated stories about their rulers. They sure were great fighters but on a smaller scale.
Next year in 1476, Mehmed II entered Bogdan (Moldova). So conquered both places same year while commanding the army. The guy was a good commander. Not like some pasha he sent to Albania or Romania.

Great Video! I especially loved it how at the end you mention Mehmed the Conqueror's other more humiliating defeat, beneath the walls of Beograd, where funnily enough was also at the hands of a romanian born leader, Iancu of Hunedoara!
That was a Hungarian leader, Janos Hunyady. They don’t say that in Romanian history books because Ceausescu wanted Transylvania to have some heroic military leaders so as not to humiliate them when compared to Wallachia and Moldavia. They used his Romanianized name. The truth is that Transylvania never had a great military leader, people there were always serfs and they accepted their condition. Only the szekelys had pride and dignity and they fought alongside Wallachian and Moldavian leaders to gain freedom. The unification of Romania (1601), re-unification (1918) and liberation (September 1944) all came from the South and into Transylvania. Not the other way around.
I am thoroughly enjoying the rising popularity of these tactical war and battle videos in TH-cam. Your video was amazing, really well done and incredibly entertaining! Love your work! Thank you for making it!
Somebody actually done it... I am impressed. As a Moldovan, I really appreciate that you made a video on The Battle of Vaslui FACTS ABOUT STEPHEN(ȘTEFAN) THE GREAT 1.It is said that he won 44 battles out of 46/47 The truth is that he lost 3 out of like 37 2.He had married with one of the Russian prince's relative(i don't remember exactly, but I think it's his daughter) 3.He the prince of Moldova for 47 years, a record for Moldova 4.Even in 1502 ,2 years before his death, He put Moldova into a coalition Vs. The ottoman empire 5.On the east boarder (where the Mongols usually attacked), he let some descendants of soldiers (răzeși in Romanian) defend. They weren't given money, They had a lot of land they just had to defend(they were over average) *sorry for poor English, just a 13 year-old Moldovan commenting
Your 5th point is exactly what the Byzantines did with "akritai". They were soldiers who were allowed to settle and live off the land with their families on the borders (eastern borders I think), so it was an extra motive to defend this land.

Lol. Osman Pasha defended a town with his small army against a whole Russian+Romanian force for 6 months. The allied army failed again and again. At last, the Russians realised it was not possible to capture the city hence cut the supply lines of the Turks. Otherwise there was no way the allied army could get pass Osman Pasha.
Osman Pasha had his army well entranched, his defensive positiones were on a hilltop, his army was only 1/2 of the joint Russian-Romanian forces - his chances to defend his line were very good. Ask anyone who understands millitary tactics and you'll get, more all less, the following answer: in order to successfully storm a well-fortified enemy possition, the attacking force must have: 1) superiority in numbers (at least 1 to 3, better 1 to 5), 2) higher fire power, 3)achieve full encirclement if possible, and cut enemy supply lines.4) achieve the element of surprise,5) outstanding intel, etc etc. For some unknown reason, the Russians began attacking the turks without achieving first the above-mentioned superiority. So, by no means it is due to Osman Pasa's merit, but thanks to the low professionalism of the Russian commanders that allowed the turks keep Plevna for so long.
I'm so happy to found this channel. I never knew how bad ass Wallachia and Moldavia were. I always thought these were just some poor provinces who were pushed around for whoever went by. I love to watch and listen about Ottomans being in troubles in Balkan region. Is there any assumption of how many troops ottomans lost in all these wars and rebellions in Balkan regions?
Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm not sure about the total losses in the Balkan and Carphathian region, but it's important to remember that, overall, the Ottomans were the world's superpower at this time, or were close to becoming one. Small states like Moldavia and Wallachia cold offer limited resistance and usually ended up being conquered by the Ottomans. Overall, the Ottomans were quite successful against European kingdoms for hundreds of years.

That was the battle that stop Muslim expansion to Easter Europe, like forever, after his cousin Vlad "The Impaler"caused another Ottoman campaign to crumble in the dust during the night of 16-17 June 1462. We bent but we were never broke, a small and insignificant people, at the convergence of four "Grate Neighbors"(The Habsburg Empire, The Polish-Lithuanian Empire, The Ottoman Empire, and The Russian Tsarist Empire). Because of Roman heritage we knew the best how to use the Latin expression "Divide et impera", we used them against each other to assure our survival.

Mongols never fought against Romans. You mean the fake ones, as Byzantine Greeks, after 610 AD.
Indeed. Stefan was truly among the best generals of his time.

"I wont be able to do Pyrrhus right now" which means you're considering it. YASSSSS
Stefan wasn't really a king, the titles the leaders of the Romanian principalities of Wallachia, Moldavia and Transilvania were grand voievode and domnitor, or domn.
This is the first bit of Romanian history I see on this type of channels. Congratulations on a well researched and a well made video.
Stefan Botezatorul no you idiot your language is Romanian your nation anthem and language is Romanian.
Stefan Botezatorul your constitution states "the state language is Romanian"
Stefan Botezatorul your parliament adopted a law defining the Moldovan language as "Limba Romaneasca" look it up
Stefan Botezatorul Serios? Constitutia Republicii Moldova?

As a romanian from the region of Moldova, i approve this 👍🏼👏🏼😌

Wonderful coverage!Thank you a lot!
Can you cover other important battles in the history of Romania, like the Battle of Posada (1330), Battle of Rovine (1395), Battle of Calugareni (1594), Battle of Plevna (1877), Battle of Marasti,Marasesti, Oituz (1917) ? Much obliged!
This is a great proposal.
Osman Pasha kicked some ass at Plevna.
Honourable TurK Still,it lost!
This may be my favorite battle of all time. Early use of psy-ops, guns, and drums!
@@HistoryMarche Yes, I'm very well aware of the Ottomans being a major world power at the time, that is why I love to see those rare cases when things didn't go their way ;) Here in Slovenia we have some stories and songs from that time. Thanks again for all the great content you've been making. History is awesome!
In this battle they lost over 40.000 soldiers
Another fantastic presentation. Well done!
Why thank you. Glad you're back for the new video.
Stephen was also Vlads cousin. Kinda see why they helped eachother.
Well with family then, you'd just as easily attack them as aide them.
Greeting from Romania Moldavia region. A fost interesant.
Moldova is an independent country its not part of Romania
Micha Siscov erm no. It might be a state but you should really learn history before talking. I am an Moldavian of the Romanian region and I can say Moldavia as a state is a false one because it is controlled by the russians due to it s richness in wine. Moldavia is an Romanian state... which was stolen by the russians multiple times alo g 18 19 cebtury later to vote its reunification with the Motherland in March 1918 later to be ripped again by the Stalin and Hitler.
Leo Moldavia I think you should be the one checking ur history moldavians and Romanians are the same people yes but Moldova has been indépendant for along time it is true the Russians and the Romanians propangande my people so they feel Russian or Romanian but we are none of the Above We Are Moldavian and we shall stay Moldavian
Leo And no last time I checked Moldova was an indépendant country
Yes true it s is independed but it is a puppet think about like east and west Germany it s a sad story between us Romanians.
I love historical channels, espeially the ones that analyze battles, but I am confident this is the best one yet. Your analysis is flawless, and as a romanian reenactor that did a small rendition of the battle of Vaslui, I was extremely pleased to see familiar stuff, and historical accuracy. Keep up the good work, you're the best out there!
Thank you kindly.
Thankyou for bringing us a piece of romanian history!
Woooow - that is a piece from every page of the tactics book!
Nicely done stafan :D
I hope that I am not lying. I think this is the first video that I share on the facebook. I'm from Romania. I never knew that history can be so beautiful presented. Our teachers never show as the history like that. Orgasmic video.
Thank you for watching and sharing.
Dude...phrasing...
MrHarrytheJew hehe it was pretty funny though
I love this battle. The strategy is amazing !
Cool video, respect from Istanbul
Thank you kindly sir.
Székely and proud! We are Hungarians too, but we've always fought against anyone that would threaten the Carpathians! Thank you for your coverage. :)
Thank you for watching.
Great video! I had not heard of this battle before... Snowman at 6:50 :D
Thank you kindly, I like the content you have over on your channel as well. The battle is fairly known, although not as covered as some other more famous battles.
In the USA most history books tend to Very quickly gloss over Eastern European and Ottoman history-Vlad tepes, Lepanto, siege of Viena/Malta/Constantinople and a couple others might get mentioned but it is nice to see others I have not heard of-always love to learn more :)
Epimetheus do a video about this pls
That was the battle that stop Muslim expansion to Easter Europe, like forever, after his cousin Vlad "The Impaler"caused another Ottoman campaign to crumble in the dust during the night of 16-17 June 1462.
Romanians were the stone that the ottomans could never chew, as Habsburgs and Russian Empire. We bent but we were never broke, a small and insignificant people, at the convergence of four "Grate Neighbors"(The Habsburg Empire, The Polish-Lithuanian Empire, The Ottoman Empire, and The Russian Tsarist Empire). Because of Roman heritage we knew the best how to use the Latin expression "Divide et impera", we used them against each other to assure our survival.
then if you like. check up also vlad the impaler, iancu of hunedoara and michael the brave
Thank you, I am from Moldova, and Stefan is our national hero. :). Never expected to see battle of Vaslui on an English TH-camr, how you came with this idea of covering Moldavian battle?
I've great admiration for Stefan, the choice was easy :D
Hey, it is the national hero of Romania too !
HistoryMarche but how you heard about Ştefan.
Moldovans are Romanians. They are Romaninians just like ardelenii, muntenii etc.
as a Turk I have amazed with this tactics
Glad you liked the video. Thank you for watching.
