    There are quite a few anecdotes about Vlad.
    He captured some opposing nobles and order them impaled but the nobles supporting him protested because it was a death for commoners, not fitting someone of high status. Vlad conceded and the asked the executioners to use longer sticks for the nobles so they stand above the common criminals when impaled.

      I wonder if the members of Monty Python were aware of this legend? In _The Life of Brian_ an orthodox couple protests on realizing there's a Samaritan being crucified nearby, because under the terms of the occupation they're entitled to be crucified in a Jewish-only section. Others start protesting too. The centurion asks for everyone who wants to be crucified in a different section to raise their hands.

      Don't forget the episode in Buda, when under house arrest a thief hid in his house. The Hungarian militia did the mistake of trespassing his house to look for the thief. Vlad produced the thief, but argued that because the militia trespassed instead of asking him for help (he would know how to deal with the thief), he would let the thief go and killed the militia men instead swiftly...

      Abel...that was a tactic used by Alexander the Great - to cause chaos among the enemy. Imagine a force that outnumbered the attacked force causing havoc! The invaders were relaxing the night before an attack and the surprise they would get when battle plans didn't go according to the anticipated result.

      Vlad was educated in Ottoman Palace.
      He tried to make similar night attack as Ottomans did in 1371.
      Serban Despot Ugljesa marched on Ottoman city Adrionopole with 70.000 soldier.
      While they made camp near Maritsa river Ottoman General Lala Sahin Pasha realised Serbians were too confident and security of canp was low because main army of Ottomans was in Asia.
      Lala Sahin Pasha attacked to camp of Serbians at night only with 800 light cavalary.
      He created big panic in Serbian camp because Serbians didnt realise they outnumbered Turkish attack as 800 to 70.000.
      Lala Sahşn Pasha directly attack to center of the camp and killed Serbian Nobbles.
      And Serbian King and his soldiers drowned while they tried to escape by passing other side of the river with panic.
      Vlad exactly tried same operation, he made night attack to kill Mehmet.
      But Ottoman Sultans protected by permanent army called Janniseries. And Janniserries elite and well organised units. They had good reaction and hold Vlad's advenced because unlike Serbians Janniseries knew they outnumbered Vlads army. Holding Vlad was makimg time to ley Ottoman sipahi cavalaries join the fight and finish Vlad.
      Vlad was smart when he lost the surprise advantage he knew he cant stand against Ottoman army and he managef to retrrat.
      But all success of Vlad is coming from his education in Ottoman army.
      Vlad's war againsr Mehmed wass more like a civil war of 2 Ottoman cımmanders.

      Yeah the salt goes back to the battle of Varna where the pope transported Ottoman reinforcements for the battle against the Hungarian Polish joint forces they were lead by the current Kings father. But yeah Mathias hated Vlad which is funny since he also has some romanian blood in him. Unfortunately Vlad's rutheless style of rule made him unpopular to most nobles. But you can't deny he was a military genius.

      The feud between Hunyadis and Tepeses goes back many decades. After Varna, Vlad's father, Vlad II imprisoned Matthias's father, János and held him captive in Tirgoviste. Decades before that Vlad II was a hostage in Sigismund's court while János served there and the king seems to have favoured János (to the extent that rumours started to spread that János was actually his unlawful son). Both families also originated from Wallachia, so maybe the families clashed even before that.

      I think Mehmed made a mistake by allowing Vlad to get into his head and make it personal between the two of them though I know they knew each other and grew up together in the Ottoman court. He might have been able to deal with Vlad through diplomacy much more effectively. But when you are a warrior like Mehmed the easiest path is to fight. For one he could of bought off Vlad since Vlad only wanted his own realm and a level of independence.

Regarding the Battle of Vaslui, I picked that topic because it was such a brilliantly planned and executed ambush, Stefan cel Mare's victory at Vaslui was as good as almost any victory that Hannibal had over Rome.

    Great video as usual... I am a big fan already.
    Vlad could raise eyebrows from Machiavelli, Tamerlane and Richard the Lionheart...
    The only thing that he could not do was to assure the boyars loyalty. Boyars of Stefan of Moldavia were fiercely loyal to him with minor exceptions and that made the sultan expedition of 1476 end in failure.

    • @HistoryMarche
      @HistoryMarche  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, to hammer home his authority with the boyars and ensure their loyalty he had to have remained in power for much longer. 6 years was too short a period to completely bring all nobility into the fold.

    • @autnocens
      @autnocens 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes. 15th century Moldova knew 2 reigns (Alexander the Good and Stephen the Great) which, combined, lasted for almost 80 years. Less exposed and arguably stronger, with higher stability and less entrenched feuds. Even after Stephen died the dynastic continuity remained mostly unchallenged and would have continued probably longer if it weren't for the breaking point in Romanian history which, imo, is the loss of Bugeac under Petru Rares. His "we shall again be what we were before and even more" motto proved to be rather ominous for centuries and a tremendously costly prophecy to bring into life.

    I think its quite likely that Vlad's expeditionary commander most likely did betray him. Remember Vlad wasn't very popular among the Boyars who as shown in the video did end up turning against him for a Ottoman puppet because of how much he had clipped their wings and the fact that he killed so many of them didn't exactly make Vlad a very endearing leader.

    • @HistoryMarche
      @HistoryMarche  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Valid points indeed. I too think he was probably betrayed.

    • @L2Xenta
      @L2Xenta 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The greatest betrayal was still to come.... the sad part. Mathias kept Vlad imprisoned for 11 to 12 years. Some say his cousin Stefan helped to get him released, or it may just be that Vlad promised to marry one of Mathias' relatives, and made some kind of pact/deal that would give Mathias the upper hand. However after those 11 years imprisoned he returned and took once more the throne of Wallachia by force, only to be killed before or during a battle with Ottomans. Since they dont mention how he died, that was probably the worst kind of betrayal ... im sure he was double crossed , ottoman sources always mention , or even brag how events take place, sometimes they write poetry about such events, yet they dont mention anything on how the death of Vlad takes place. I would guess they either didnt know details or they were ashamed to write them down. (Yes it was probably the boyars that got him killed, wouldnt be first time they do it to a duke of his family). But whats also sad about it... obviously he lost a lot of his influence and strength during the long imprisonment .

    • @abiesalba100
      @abiesalba100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is likely though that he wasn't abandoned by his captain and that the support group just couldn't accomplish its task. A betrayal would have created much more reactions in the reports of the time, especially since there were many survivors after the battle able to testify (by contrast with another disputed case of possible betrayal at Kosovo, some decades earlier). The Wallachian forces were quite slim and unprofessional, with few exceptions probably also ill equipped. The maneuver was very difficult and it required a very accurate timing. You shouldn't always compare this with today's politicians or even with the later centuries of Wallachian history, when indeed betrayal was the case with some occasions. The Ottoman influence wasn't that much well imprinted in Wallachian politics in the 15th century, especially if it was the case with such an all-out invasion, when the sultan was there just to be taken out.

    • @L2Xenta
      @L2Xenta 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vlad was in peak of his power, by now he had very loyal people commanding beside him (at least in the army), he was going to be betrayed but only after the long imprisonment, during which obviously he lost his grip on things in Wallachia. So I agree that in this particular night attack , something must have gone wrong, as ShogunBean mentions maybe something like that.

      If you think that was close, check out the Battle of Nicopolis where the French knights fucked it up for everyone by charging in headfirst, refusing to allow the experienced Wallachian footsoldiers under Mircea the Elder advance first to wear out the Ottoman vanguard which would've allowed the knights to envelop the flanks. Instead the French went in first, without the support of any infantry, god forbid lowly footmen stole their knightly glory, and got fucked. The Ottoman vanguard got reinforced and the Christian forces were at a complete tactical disadvantage by order of deployment. Or better still, the Catholic, Habsburg betrayal of Michael the Brave in 1601 who was assassinated after consolidating against the Ottomans and almost conquering Constantinople. Fuck the Catholic swines. Theres no such thing as Christian brotherhood. Theres a special place in hell for the Popes and the traitorous godless heathens in the West that betrayed their eastern Christian brothers.

    Absolutely loved the video! I've been waiting with bated breath for its release, checking your channel multiple times a day. I was so excited when I woke up this morning, went onto TH-cam and saw it there as the first recommended video! Fantastic presentation and details as always! One thing I was hoping for more detail on was when Vlad is forced to retreat to Poenari Fortress (his army mostly melted away) and is attacked by Radu and his forces. As you'd know, the legends go that this is when his wife committed suicide by jumping from the battlements into the Arges River below and Vlad somehow escaped via a secret passage into the mountain, and then rode off on a horse with the shoes nailed on backwards to trick his pursuers. Whether this is true or just legend, I'm not sure, but wondered if you may have uncovered anything more on it, and thought this video would have at least addressed/mentioned it. According to my research, this is when he then escaped into Transylvania and sought out Matthias Corvinus and was captured and imprisoned. Will you possibly be including this in your next video (if you are indeed planning a Part 3 to cover Vlad's time in prison and then his return to the throne and death in 1476)? Any thoughts on the Poenari raid or other reasons it was not included in this video (perhaps not enough factual historical evidence about what actually happened?)?... Again, incredible work, and I look forward to more in the future. Thank you!! :)

    • @HistoryMarche
      @HistoryMarche  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you kindly sir. Yes I know about the story, but I tried to avoid overly legendary stories, or else the video would've been 1h long :) Similarily when I mentioned the field of impaled Turks, I tried to avoid mentioning that the army was terrified of that sight or that Mehmed was horrified at seeing so many impaled Turks. It goes against common sense that Mehmed would be scared of impaled corpses after seeing so many dead bodies in numerous battles that he won up until that point.

      Very glad you gave such great feedback, I hope you'll enjoy future videos as well. Hannibal part 2 is in production now, should be out in late July or early August I hope.

    • @KingJohn478
      @KingJohn478 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely understand that point of view, as you want it to be as historically accurate as possible, and actual evidence is very hard to find. Although, a bit more info on the 'Forest of the Impaled' would have definitely been welcomed, especially in regard to how he came by so many Turkish prisoners to impale, particularly since he was often in the mode of strategic retreat (perhaps he brought prisoners over from the Bulgarian attacks?). Some claim the Turkish bodies were mixed with many civilians too... I've always hoped to find more details about the raid on the Poenari Castle itself, and how the battle went, but there is very limited information around, apart from the vague legends attributed to the Arefians etc. It's also a shame that no 'secret tunnel' has ever been located... Would you consider making a Part 3 about Vlad?...

    • @albertweber7510
      @albertweber7510 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I am one of the historians who contributed a little bit to the video. The Forest of the Impaled was real. The voivodes of Wallachia and Moldova brought surviving prisoners to their capital cities of Targoviste/Suceava in a triumph march and killed them on the city's execution place (every medieval city with the right to execute had one). While Stephen the Great hanged his enemies (as is told by the Moldovan-German Chronicle) Vlad used it for enemy noblemen (as is told by the country's chronicle: at the Easter Feast he invited them for reconciliation but it was a trap. They were then impaled around the city walls of Targoviste), for other enemies (as is told by the Ottoman Chronicles: he had many people from Wallachia and Transylvania impaled) but it surely served also its earlier purpose as a "regular" execution place.

    • @albertweber7510
      @albertweber7510 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is not clear how many of the victims in the "forest" were actually Ottoman/Turkish prisoners. Because he was allied with the Ottomans from 1456 to 1461, the Ottoman victimes were the people who were taken as POWs after his raid on the Danube in January/February 1462.

      @HistoryMarche Absolutely agree on the tremendous effort, passion and energy put into every one of this videos. As a senior software dev and having collaborated with graphic designers in the past, as well as a long time history afficionado I think I have a fair idea on the amount of research, project planning and execution effort that goes into these videos.
      I really love your videos, the animation and narration style and I think they are even better than those on Kings and Generals, which says a lot. Given the right amount of resources and time I think you would really kill it as a specialized channel on youtube.
      The only current setback as I see it is the long waiting times between videos which I understand is due to lack of resources but this really matters.
      I would like to make a small donation in order to support this channel if you point me on where to do that.
