    Just played first game and wow! This video allows a new player like me to learn how to play a game of 40k! I bet I got some rules wrong along the way, but that can be corrected later when I play a game with a experienced player! My first game was a lot of fun, thanks!

    I am new to the game and I am confused by benefit of cover, mainly because of the difference between models and units. The answer is probably staring me in the face but please help me. Here is the scenario:
    An attacking unit has five models and the target unit has 5 models. Only one of the models of the target unit is fully visible to all of the attacking models. How many models in the target unit can be fired at and/or take the effects of being fired on and what is the benefit of cover for the target unit?

    As someone who barely knows anything about this game when it comes to how to play it (known a tonne about the lore for ages) this is a bit difficult to follow I guess because it's a lot of information crammed into short segments so I'm forgetting things almost as quickly as I've learned them. Perhaps I would be happier getting the core rules book so I can ruminate on it more.

    What about HQ's that have Leader that also say, "This model can be attached to a unit that already has a Leader?
    Does that models Leader abilities still activate?
    For instance, Having a Foul Blightspawn attached to a unit of Plague Marines, being led by Lord of Contagion.

    In the engagement range section at 12:02, you state engagement range is defined as 1" horizontally, and 5" vertically. Then, in the charge phase example at 36:08, you state that the squad could not make the charge. Is this example a mistake? Making it to directly below them should constitute being within engagement range, making it possible to make a successful charge on a roll of 9+, or is it the case that you cannot declare the charge because the combined distance is >12" as per previous editions? (or some other oversight on my part?) Thanks for the incredibly detailed video, exciting to see the new edition coming together!

      Thanks for the reply, glad to know there wasn't some hidden rule change omitted somewhere. Easy mistake to make, especially when you're God knows how many hours deep into these rules explanations. I just think it's good to highlight from you personally, when many people will use this as a starting point for rules debates as the edition starts. An example where it would be the case is if the downstairs was impassable like a container, and the models on top were more than an inch from the closest edge.(I know you know this, just for anyone new) thanks again for your hard work on this, awesome resource.

    Question concerning Ruins and visibility and whether they get benefit of cover in this situation:
    A unit of Necron Warriros vs a unit of Intercessors (only as an example)
    If there is a unit of Warriors inside of the terrain feature (open back of the ruins so it only covers the front and side) what if the intercessors go behind the ruins so the unit of warriors become fully visible - would that remove the benefit of cover since you are now fully visible even though the benefit of cover rule states "Wholly within this terrain feature or not fully visible" as they are still fully within the terrain but just fully visible now
    I'd be expecting it to be the benefit of cover is removed but wording is still a bit iffy.

    I didn't scroll deep into the comments; did anyone mention the sequencing in the Combat phase? The new rules call out, "In both steps of the Fight phase, players alternate selecting
    eligible units from their army, one at a time, starting with the player whose turn is not taking place, and fighting with them." So, even in the Fight First phase, it starts with the Defender/Players whose turn it is not. FYI!

    Jeez, the combat phase is messy as fuck...
    So to get this straight, there is no alternating activations? I though I read that after the fight first thing the player whose turn is not currently on gets to do some combat first?
    I either made that up completely, or you didn't explain it very well.

  • @aalagerwaard

    36:08 you talk about charging a unit at a higher level of terrain, are you sure that you would need to measure the vertical distance? The target of the charge should have an engagement range of 5'' vertical and 1'' horizontal. The blade guard veterans would still be in engagement range on the lower floor
    EDIT: nvm already caught in another comment > this is indeed a mistake

  • @chaosbot21
    @chaosbot21 ปีที่แล้ว

    battle shock sucks and units dyeing from it is even more dumb, there's no reason for it. I miss 3rd edition, also engagement distance vertically is 5" is it not? so they are not 9"s away they are 5"s because engagement distance is 1"? and it says IF IT CAN be in base to base But you can still melee at 1" away. 36:17 loads of questions and do you have the rules on you to confirm these claims?

    I thought GW was going to fit the rules into a single page or am I mistaken? Even if this much more skimmed compared to previous editions, it is still a lot to remember for someone completely new.
    I watched a video on the rules from the Rogue Trader days, and sure, the rules now are nothing compared to how complicated playing Warhammer used to be. I remember getting into 40k as a kid back in 5th edition with the Battle for Black Reach starter set and it took me a couple of weeks to read "just" the rules. My lil brother had no chance of getting what was going and I still had to constantly check the rulesbook when it came to the assault phase.
    It feels like GW compulsively wants to just add rules to everything. I don't think we really need rules for specific types of terrain, for example. Less is often more, especially when trying to get people into the hobby.

      you and your buddies are totally free (and encouraged) to ignore a lot of this stuff if it's too crunchy. Most of these rules are written with at least an eye towards competitive play and where you find competition, you'll find rules pedants and annoying "well, actually..." guys and so GW needs to get *very* specific about things. And it gets very, very silly at times. So unless you travel a lot and need to play a set of rules you know will be standard at every game shop you go to, or youre trying to play tournaments... just fudge a lot of this stuff.

    I'm confused about the engagement range rule. The rule says you cannot set up or end models on normal, adv, fall back moves. But how do models end up in engagement range anyways? If I have a unit that's 10" away from an enemy unit, I move up 6" (4" awake from enemy) then I'm in engagement range? Or am I not allowed to do that since it's ending a normal move within engagement range. I am assuming a model/unit makes a charge and that's how the unit gets into engagement range.

    My attention dropped after 15 minutes.
    As much as I like 40k: needing 1 hour to explain the game to someone is waaay too complicated. I played a bit of 7th edition and I think I tried a small game at 8th edition once with about 5 units (HQ, 2 troops, 1 fast, 1 heavy) and not only had I to learn everything and keep track of my stuff, I also had to re-explain to my casual opponent every 5 minutes and keep track of his stuff too (wounds, movement, abilities). And as a game takes a couple of hours, I was ready for some holidays afterwards.
    And then 40k came up with all those command points, more special abilities, different movement ranges which made me completely lost.
    And to make things worse, the rules change every couple of months with new codexes and campaign books, errata and every two years or so with a new edition (before you get your army completely assembled and painted, of course).
    I can just barely play 7th edition and Horus Heresy 1.0 in 2023 and think those rules are way too complicated already; like movement through terrain - how far? Moving with jump infantry, all types of close combat weapons with initiative, the damage tables (yeah, one could basically calculate them on the fly but damn...), and I almost never used psyker units because that requires more rules and a lot of searching through the rule book. All these special rules make up a couple of pages in BattleScribe; looking that stuff up on that like 2 pages of text or even looking it up in the core rules and reading is so tedious. I recently found One Page Rules - it seems to keep the basic stuff I know and drops the complicated rest completely. Great alternative.
    Then they came up with KillTeam and while it shares some mechanics with 40k you have to keep track of your like 5-10 specialist units where everyone has unique rules... ok, I'm out!
    If any - ANY - kind of game requires more than 10 minutes of explanation, constant status tracking, it is not fun - because those are menial tasks that have to be eliminated completely from the game because that is not what the game is about! All games that are a couple of hundreds or thousands of years old have simple rules but complex strategies. Those are masterpieces. 40k isn't one like that.

      An hour to learn how to play a table top game is too much for you?. Let me guess, you were born after the year 2000?

      @@1337foxs no, I am over 40 and don't have time for this shit: I want to play casually. Board games like Catan and all that stuff that have like 20 pages of rules are a mood killer.
      You don't have much time, want to play a game with friends and in that evening where you have maybe 3 hours to spend with them, you take 1 hour to explain some effing game, no matter how nice it is? Nope, nope nope. And even if you did explain one hour how it works, do you think people remember all that? How to move with different units, how to move through terrain, how cover works, what the units can do and all that crap?
      Ah, and then always comes the moment when you half-recall how a rule works and then you try to find them for 10 minutes in the badly badly badly written rulebook. Weapons in the middle, army stuff at the back universal rules somewhere else in the middle, you are skimming through the book like an idiot that is 50-80% useless fluff text (talking about 7th edition here, obviously) and then you find the rule, like tank shock and start guessing how it is supposed to work because it is ambiguously written, you lookup a video of 15 minutes where they explain it, but the comments state that this is wrong, now lookup FAQ and supplements if that has been rewritten - yeah, come on... FUXXX Warhammer.

    Small dice are for creeps? I've seen more people "drop" large dice instead of roll them, and every time I want to say, "Hey, maybe you could put a little more spin on your dice." But of course, that would be rude, so most of the time I just take it. Never have that problem with small dice, they always get good rolls.

    That unit cohesion rule is dog s***. Point blank people will abuse this system to make multi Model units worthless. That rule alone will almost make it only viable to use single model units. unless you require a certain amount of spacing between obstacles and barriers, But then that would just make the rule pointless.

    • @superjaylive
      @superjaylive ปีที่แล้ว

      Just found out for Orks you can have a max unit of 6 boys because the rest of the unit is beyond 2 inches and will be destroyed. Which makes the unit literally incapable of destroying or even damaging certain Characters due to shrugs and wounds.

    • @superjaylive
      @superjaylive ปีที่แล้ว

      What happens when you try to move your men behind cover. Are you then forced to either just sacrifice units that are out of cohesion? Or are we forced to just leave our models there to be shot at and have zero cover. Or are you changing how cover works to make A-line of site rules pointless?

    The rules are surprisingly simple the way the official Warhammer channel explained it in their 8 min video.
    The only thing I'm wondering about are options to disengage from melee. It seems once you get bogged down after the charge phase it's pretty much a slugging match from there on.
    It looks like there are only penalties for trying to reposition a weaker unit from getting torn apart.
