I think an Aurora doll of this kind should go full Medieval.
Sleeping Beauty had beautiful art direction that was never replicated again and part of the beauty was that it went for a more authentic Medieval aesthetic. No designer Aurora doll has ever reflected that and it's such a missed opportunity.

a collection of dolls inspired by the place of origin of each story and its historical period would be incredible, for example Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are inspired by the French version of the story so they could use the 17th century for one and the Middle Ages for Aurora.

Omg I couldn't agree moreeeee I thought I was the only one thinking they are always missing the mark with Aurora, it hurts even more cause she's my favorite, I would totally die for a medieval Aurora, especially with those gothic elements they use in the film!

    • @virginiamontaldo440
      @virginiamontaldo440 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@chloeadaline9349 Aurora is probably the princess they dissed more in all the lineup lol, the proportions she had in the movie have never been replicated in a doll, they all tend to have big heads (which works for Jasmine or Belle but less for the more proportionate older princesses like Aurora, or Pocahontas), and fashion-wise all of the redesigns have always been generic, they re-use the changing color dress idea over and over again, without ever drawing inspiration from the movie which is, objectively speaking, breath-taking in its art design.

@@jonahflores8cinco why 17th century specifically? Cinderella is set in the late 1800s

    • @ten-ze1pq
      @ten-ze1pq 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Naharu.by place of origin they mean the literal setting and time period in which the story was created. So Sleeping Beauty was a medieval fairytale first appearing around the 14th century while the version of Cinderella Disney based the movie from was written by Charles Perrault in the late 17th century. A line of dolls based off their in-story setting would be interesting, but princesses like Ariel and Jasmine live in very factionalized settings based off of many different places and cultures, making it easier to base the designs off the original stories.

Mulan looks badass. She’s only one I 100% like in this line. Love the serious face she’s making paired with the outfit, and the dark color scheme. Yes, the outfit choice and colors are not accurate to the film but I still like and could see Mulan wearing it.

The first Ariiel doll reminds me of the Born of Venus painting, the fabric on her back resembles the clamshell , the color of the dress also is like the clam, she has a lot of pearls and the blue tulle part of her skirt is like the waves , and maybe the wings on her head represent the angel's wings from that painting

I personally got Mulan (I visited the Disney Store in Paris and she was half off so I couldn't leave her behind) and Moana (she was half off and got an extra 25% off because of some sale on the EU website). I'd love to get Cinderella as well as I think she's stunning but she has yet to go on sale as I don't feel like these dolls are worth full price (almost no LE doll is imo). But the designs are beautiful and I love how much liberty they were able to take as it can get quite boring to always see the same dress or outfit on these characters. Mulan, Merida and the 2nd Tiana were the only ones who felt like true Disney Designer dolls to me, and Mulan was the only one I decided to get out of the entire collection. They're both one of the few that incoroporated the characters personality, elements of their movie and was just straight up gorgeous. When talking about this line though we need to remember they increased the edition size MASSIVELY, which is great for accesability. Some dolls having nearly 10,000 made of them where as most designer dolls in the past are 5,000 or below. So while it seems like a "flop" to the public because they're on clearance, they have more than double of them to sell, as well as 15 characters vs the usual 5 on average in a designer line, so it was expected they wouldn't sell out. Some of the sketches and concept art the designers made are just beautiful, but that just doesn't translate into the reality of a doll, which I think a lot of the dolls suffered from. I appreciate them being bold and taking some risks, but this line was not to my tastes personally. I dont think theres a problem with the designer collection in general, the Masquerade line and the Premiere line were both gorgeous, but this specific collection was too ambitious. I hope they realise there's still a lot of potential with the designer dolls when its done correctly.

  • @adrianzavala6729
    @adrianzavala6729 ปีที่แล้ว +15

I'm kind of 50/50 with this line. I think there were designers who totally captured the essence of the characters, and others who had no idea what princess they were designing. Added to this, the Disney Store manufactured around ten thousand copies per princess; which is a lot (although it is understandable, since the physical stores of the Disney Store closed in the US). That being said, I think there are dolls in this line that are very worthwhile, as they have characteristic elements from their movies that any fan can recognize. Based on this, here is my ranking from best to worst.
First, this is the list of dolls I would absolutely buy:
1.Mulan. - The embroidery on the sleeves and pants with Mushu, mountains and cherry blossoms is beautiful. Also, I love that she has her iconic comb, the fact that she is wearing pants, and her badass expression.
2.Tiana (second version). - A simply beautiful outfit, very 20's style with Evangeline on her back.
3.Aurora. - The embroidery with the roses, the fairies and the crown is divine. Also, I love the stained glass skirt with the spinning wheel, and the Disneyland castle. The only thing this doll is missing is her iconic crown and a belt.
4.Pocahontas.- I bought this doll and I love it. She looks like a forest goddess. She is made with high quality materials, her face is beautiful, and she has gold embroidered "colors of the wind" leaves. Also, I love the metallic charms of Meeko, Flit and the compass on her belt. However, I customized her a bit, so she could wear her mother's necklace. Now, she is perfect.
5.Merida.- The kilt, the fur-embroidered bear claw, the boots, her bow, her warrior armor and her hairstyle make her gorgeous.
6.Snow White.- I love her cape, her belt and the ivory color of her dress.
7.Cinderella.- Such an elegant doll! I love the metallic little birds and her bag with the midnight clock.
8.Jasmine.- I like her hairstyle, the embroidery on her dress and that her outfit resembles the red outfit she wore in the movie.
9.Ariel (second version). - The doll is cute, but very simple. So simple, that at first glance she looks like a Hasbro Designer Series doll. But I appreciate the embroidery and the fact that her dress is a representation of the purple dress that she wore at the end of her movie.
From here on, I would not buy these dolls:
10.- Tiana (first version). - Her dress is pretty. But, with that hairstyle, she looks more like a Diana Ross doll than a Tiana doll.
    11. Moana. - The doll is simple, but I like her headdress in her hair. At first, I thought she was carrying a surfboard on her back, but now I see that it's a reference to her grandmother turned into a manta ray.
12.Belle. - I like her skirt with the rose petals, but that hairstyle and those earrings are a big no for me.
    13. Briar Rose. - She looks like a supermodel and her shoes are very pretty, but I agree that her outfit has nothing to do with her movie.
14.Rapunzel. - I just didn't like this doll at all. I can't imagine a free spirit like Rapunzel wearing such a silly dress. It looks like a bad version of Alice in Wonderland trying to play cricket with the queen.
15.Ariel (first version). - This doll has everything wrong: the painted baby hairs are hideous, the wings in her hair are horrible, the wheel on her back is so out of place, and the sheer skirt over the short skirt looks like something you could buy on Aliexpress. In general, Ariel looks like she is dressed for a carnival in Rio.
That's my opinion, and sorry for the long text. Great video!

Merida is by far my favorite and the one I wish I could afford. Her dress fits her so well with the tartan print, the armor pieces and the arrow motif. The face is super cute and looks a lot like her - some of the other princesses look a bit too old and harsh for me. The colors are lovely as well and the details make sense, they don't look forced just to increase the price. Sadly, I can't afford a 130,00 EUR doll, but she's amazing.

The wings on Moana is the ray that represents her grandma. The gold thing on Aurora's chest is her crown.
I have one of these dolls, there are £120 but I got mine on for half price. I have the Snow White doll and she is the only collector's doll I have. Didn't love all of the dolls, but I love Snow White. I like Moana's and both of Tiana's but I found myself either hating the rest or they were just meh. I can agree with the collar but it is not a puffy in person. I believe Snow white's dress is inspired by her scrapped wedding dress.

  • @little.prince

I actually love the wings on Ariel. I feel like they’re meant to represent the original tale in which she practically turned into an angel. And while yes, they do remind me of Roman and Greek mythology too, it does make sense since allegedly in the original movie she’s depicted as either Greek or Italian. Her father and sisters and mother all have Greek names, Eric’s palace is very reminiscent of an Italian one in the interior and a Greek one from the exterior. Triton was Poseidon’s son in Greek mythology too.
So I have no problem with the wings. What I do have a problem with are those pearls that come down, those are seriously, just- no…
Tiana is also great I feel. The dress is clearly inspired by the white dress she wears in ‘Almost There’ and it actually dies feel like a modern reimagining of 1920’s fashion. Had to research it for school so, yeah I think it actually fits.
Moana’s wings are also actually a callback to her grandmother, whose spirit takes the form of a ray.
REALLY disappointed in Rapunzel. They missed the chance to make a dress that’s entirely painted on in her signature watercolour style.

Ariel's dress is inspired by Kylie Minogue's Birth of Venus look from her concert tour. Bod the Drag Queen wore what Tiana's dress is SUPPOSED to look like in November 2021. It's a stunning dress! It's not the felt strip that Tiana's dress got!

Also super disappointed with this line. I remember being incredibly excited at the announcement of the line and the fact that ShopDisney was collaborating with supposed Disney fans and doll enthusiasts for the designs. But every time the dolls would leak it would be dud after dud. I also don’t expect these dolls to look exactly like their film counterparts, but like you I feel that so many of these characters fail to reflect their character personalities and film aesthetics in a way that makes them unrecognizable. I’ve also always found that the designer line had issues of capturing their heroines’ likenesses - their heads are just too big and oftentimes way too long lol. Only the 3D animated characters should have such large heads, but that’s just my opinion. But objectively this was one of the least succesful collector lines so far that I wonder how ShopDisney will approach the designer line in the future. I suspect they will never do the individual designer collaborations after this. In retrospect the doll line is clearly just tributes to the characters, but I just don’t know if most collectors want to invest in this level of looseness with characters they love.

You helped me understand why these dolls never caught my interest: there is just such little connection to the characters they're meant to be. I LOVE that both Mulan's and Merida's looks lean heavily into their warrior selves (something we don't see enough of), but overall, if the assignment was "what Disney princesses would wear on the red carpet in 2023". I think most designers missed the mark (ie, Jasmine only wore red as Jafar's slave, she wore cool tones in every other look, so why would she choose red for her look?).
Also, I love the vocabulary you use in your analysis! It's not often I hear words like "accoutrements" and "ghastly" in TH-cam, never change! ❤

I have to say I disagree. Obviously, I respect your opinion, and I mean no disrespect, but I do think that you missed the point of this doll line. I believe someone said that this line was meant to be as if the Disney princesses were going to the Met Gala; It's supposed to be over the top and flamboyant, and not their typical outfit.
Also, to be fair, I'm tired of always seeing the same things over and over again. Now I'm not going to say that all of these dolls are perfect (because some of them are just not my favorite design), however, it's nice to finally have some variety. In fact I've heard several collectors in the past complain about the Disney princess dolls always wearing the same thing and wanting to have something new for a change.
It's fair to say that I don't necessarily enjoy all of the designs the same, but one thing I can say about all of the Dolls released in this line is that they are interesting and different.

This doll line was very unique. Many of the dolls look great IMO. I like that all of the dolls have "different" looks and designs...that is the point of a designer line. Every Belle doll does not need to be in a yellow dress if you get my point. Disney increased the quantity of the dolls that they made for this series, which is why they likely haven't been selling out as fast.

The only one I've bought so far is the first Aurora one. She was my favorite and I actually thought she was pretty. I love how her dress actually has homages to the film on her dress. I am excited for the new Ariel one coming out. It's much better than the first Ariel doll, which I hated. One thing I was disappointed by was how they said they would be releasing 15, so I figured each would a different princess, but the last three were just a remake of three of them.

i think your perspective is super interesting, i was always a fan of their design and thought the whole point was not to represent the original character, but to give a modern artist's interpretation time to shine, so i never saw it as a flaw. but i definitely think you have a point, especially after looking at all of them again, so many of them don't really represent the character lmao

Hi! I recently discovered your channel and I am loving all your videos!
I wanted to comment on this especially because I felt like you for most of these dolls. However, I ended up getting Jasmine, the first Aurora and the first Ariel. And what got me into them was seeing them in person/other pictures, the stock pictures from Disney Store are AWFUL, so once I saw them under a different light they grew on me.
Anyways, I do agree I would have liked the designs to better resemble the imagenery from the movies or at least the style of the "era" they are based on. Hopefully better outcomes will follow in the future.
    Thanks for your content!

I've read that the princesses looks in this collection are supposed to be the princesses go to the Met Gala. I agree the 2nd Tiana is the best. I also like Jasmine, 2nd Ariel, Cinderella, Mulan, Snow White and Merida. The only one I really dont like is Pocahontas, they did her so dirty. The 2nd Aurora I think would look better if she was a 17 inch doll. The scale of the doll throws the outfit off because the sketch is gorgeous.

They are on sale for £33 right now on shop Disney, they really aren't selling at all. I went on shop Disney uk to get the big snow white in her wedding dress and last night and couldn't believe how cheap these dolls are. That's wild. They put the price up a few weeks ago to £110 because of Christmas and obviously didn't sell do went back down to £55 and now £33.

Definitely an interesting take on this line, I really enjoyed your opinion. I think the problem with this line is that the marketing and the vision of it wasn't clear at all.
My interpretation of it was runway-fashion ready outfits for the princesses. Personally I really enjoyed every single doll from this line, there's a few I prefer more than others but I personally was waiting for a designer line that was so out of the box and not based on the princesses normal outfits. I was bored of seeing over embellished versions of the princesses ball gowns in previous collections. This one, masquerade and premier really hit the mark for Disney designer lines in my opinion.

I don’t have any of the dolls but I have some of the pins that were also sold as part of this collection. So I can’t actually speak on the dolls. But I LOVE the pins. I have a pin collection with 700+ pins and they are amongst my top 10. I think they’re gorgeous. And I do think I would like the dolls. If I could find one at a reasonable price, I would definitely buy Jasmine

    • @ghosty4
      @ghosty4 ปีที่แล้ว

The pins have the artist's conception and, if Disney would have produced the dolls that the artists created, I think they would have sold much better! For example, Jasmine should have had two palm leaves around her bodice, not one. Ariel's "Birth of Venus" dress was so much more ethereal in the artist's conception. Belle in the rose dress didn't have obnoxious plastic tassel earrings. They missed so many important details between the artist's conception and the doll production.

The bottom for me are: 1st Ariel, Briar Rose (2nd sleeping beauty) and Pocahontas
The rest are either meh or adequate (still over priced)
Also, I think the problem was that the dolls don’t really share a theme between each other. The premiere collection had a theme, this one didn’t, so the dolls looks from different collections.

    1. aurora - wish it would have been either pink or blue
    2. Ariel - didn't like the headpiece
    3. Jasmin - don't like the poufy sleeves
    4. Pocahontas - don't like the collar
5 Tiana - wish her dress was green and had pearls...
    6. Belle - 👍
    7. Mulan- gave her a sword instead of a bag
    8. Moana, don't like back piece
    9. Rapunzel - too poufy for me, don't like giant flower that is on her head, i wish it would have been smaller flowers and her hair in a braid like it was in the movie
    10. snow white - very crowded around her neck
    11, 12, aurora and Ariel ver 2 - 👍
    13. Merida - dont really like the metal shoulder piece + i wish she would have had the bow instead of a bag
    14. cinderella - 👍
15 ver 2 Tiana - again i wish it was a little bit more green but very pretty

i completely agree with what you said about them just adding random crap to increase the "value" There are so many of these random chains and little cheap-looking trinkets which, again, look like something you could get in a $2 lot off of Aliexpress, they just cheapen the dolls. Like the belt on Pocahontas. Putting a random plastic bit on a doll does not make it look more elegant or valuable.

I thought you were being dramatic when you said that several of the dolls weren't even recognizable as their characters, but then you showed the first Aurora doll and it seriously took me 3 guesses to figure out who it was. Ariel I only recognized because of the red hair, and Jasmine's feather made me think of Pocahontas. I really hated that they put Pocahontas in a super restrictive dress clearly inspired by paintings of Queen Elizabeth I. The second Tiana doll, Moana, and Belle might be my favorites for sticking with the characters and their stories but still having beautiful reimagined outfits. I loved the Snow White doll but agree that she looks more like the evil queen.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this but I think the the first Aurora doll you showed at 15 had a Geisha girl influence. I don't think it translated well because most Kimono I've seen are all about showcasing landscapes or specific motifs and the cut never changes.
On the whole I think many of these had unfortunate cuts but I agree with you about on Tiana doll.

I agree the line has hits and misses but the theme was supposed to be modern high end fashioned themed around the character. It wasn't a fancy version of an outfit they wore or ever wore, just themed around the character. While I do not love all these dolls, I can at least say I understand what they were going for even if it wasn't always executed well. Tiana for example is very 20s inspired therefore her fashion and fashion details are 20s Art Deco/flapper themed for both dolls. The designers also included little tidbits about what went into the design. Jasmine being themed after the reds of the film and colors of Aladdin.
So I get why the line is divisive I don't like most of the dolls here and feel they could have definitely be handled better but would love that more people understood the concept and the criticism wasn't just "this isn't the dress the character wore in the movie".

I read somewhere that these dolls in the 12 inch designer collections have the freedom to have creative liberties unlike the 17 inch dolls that tend to be more movie accurate. I also saw that this line is supposed to be a sort of Met Gala where they have those big outfit ideas. I do believe that these dolls were not very popular and you have to really justify these purchases but I think Disney tried something and it sort of failed. I actually like these dolls so I’m getting them all but I am a little sad that they weren’t as popular. The thing I don’t like is that there is 15 of them. My wallet hurts lol
