    12:20 I don't have any fancy battery testing equipment but I actually have that model of battery and tried running a tetris loop with full volume and bright screen setting for ags-001.
    I had to switch it off after 9h because I was going to bed and didn't think to timelapse next to a stop watch but the point I'm making is that I was lucky enough to get up to 9h without hitting red light.
    So it goes to show just how hit or miss these aftermarkets are.
    Just last night, I started testing my gba sp batteries and my method is to full charge then time the lifetime. Given that my test couldn't complete before I went to bed, I was thinking to instead full drain the batteries and then time how long they take to charge.
    With the little experience I have, I was wondering if this is a reasonable test or if there are any things I could look out for. Ideally I would like something similar to your battery testing device but I didn't have much luck finding one.

    • @makho
      @makho  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could get a USB charging cable and run it through one of those USB power meters that keeps track of the total current that flows. It's not the best method because charging is not 100% efficient, but it's still good for estimation.

    I was a little surprised by the Game Boy Color test! A lot of people tout the GBA as switching entirely into an 8-Bit mode for compatibility mode, and whilst I believe it does. It makes sense that it sucks more power. However I was not surprised at all that the 101 beat the IPS, however I was surprised that the 101 was nearly DOUBLE the battery life of a 101.

    • @makho
      @makho  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair to the 001, the 101 was on low brightness and the battery life will increase significantly on a 001 with the light off.

    So I've got a stack of batterys. Original, aliexpress, Nintendo ds and a weird extention pack that makes the gba sp a bit bigger. I want to measure which ones are the best. Do I need to do measure anything else then charge it, run it and time it?

    • @makho
      @makho  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can measure the capacity but capacity alone doesn't mean much. If you measure the run time of each battery, you should test each with identical set-ups. For example, same game, same console, same brightness. Measuring the capacity is quicker (if you have the tools) but measuring the run time is more meaningful. The higher the capacity, the more the run time so you can use one value to extrapolate the other.

      @ArjanYoyoman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makho yeah i was afraid youre gonna say that. I dont think I have the tools to measure compacity. I only have a multimeter.
      I can turn on a GBA and a timer, go to work, come back and have my result. Only issue is that i have to have something film it. And if it stops filming half way its all for nothing.

      @makho  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArjanYoyoman If you have an old android phone, download a timelapse photography app. If you just try to record video, you'll likely hit some sort of internal limitation as most phones cannot record for 4+ hours continuously. I used an app called "Framelapse Pro" on my old phone when I was testing run time. You can calculate how long the battery lasts by just looking at the run time and the picture delay but it takes a lot of guesswork out to just throw a clock in the frame.

      @@makho ye its pretty crap - i was going to complain, but then i read the item description a bit more carefully aswell and he writes
      "Q - How long will the battery last on a full charge?
      A - This seems to differ, I've had reports of some being under an hour, while some for X hours. These are 3rd party batteries and will not be as good as the originals that were made back in the day. "
      to me that reads - "you should not be suprised if it lasts only 1 hour"
      here is the ad: aussie buys avoid!

    gba with ags101 got 20 hours and sp with ips got 10, so you say ips is bad for long battery life. except you already debunked that by saying the sp had an 800mah battery vs the 2000mah battery in the gba. obviously the gba ran twice as long.. i mean duh?

      I was never comparing a GBA SP to a GBA. I was just presenting my data in the order that I recorded it. I ran multiple consoles at the same time so I didn't have to repeat my recording setup more than necessary.
      I see why you're confused though. I had a GBA SP in my hand when I was talking about GBA mods at about 12:10. Please refer to 18:44 when I actually took two GBAs with different mods and compared them. The purpose of running that LiPo modded GBA was to show that it did not offer any real improvement over just using good AA batteries and actually got less battery life.

    Also you called the battery a lemon I hate that term because it means either bad luck or false advertisement
