    Aw man, I received one of these from RetroModding today and upon installing it today I was disappointed to see that it causes the battery cover to bulge when installed. I thought that perhaps it was my aftermarket GBA SP case that was the problem so I tried it in a completely unmodded GBA SP and the battery does not even fit in compartment, even with far more force than I would expect to use when attempting to install it.
    I'm not sure if this problem is a result of my specific battery cell bulging, the tolerance of the 3D printed sled, or how the soldered wires stick out a bit (and aren't able to be pushed down) on my version of this product but nonetheless I'm disappointed and hope that they can work out their issues.

    • @makho
      @makho  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This seems to be an issue with battery tolerances from the factory. It should fit better in an aftermarket shell as those tolerances are generally a bit looser but unfortunately, that's just where we're at right now. Most batteries seem to fit just fine but some are slightly larger for whatever reason.
      If you don't like the bulge (which, frankly, you shouldn't), I'd recommend reaching out to Retromodding.

    A lot of the customer reviews at Retro Modding say that the battery along with the 3D printed housing causes bulging on their battery covers. One review from 02/28/2021 said that they had updated the 3D print design to better accomodate an OEM GBA SP shell, but I'm not sure. I tried asking about this from Retro Modding, but they haven't answered yet. *Is it safe to buy a pre-assembled battery from Retro Modding?*

    • @Moshugaani

      The issue of batteries being slightly different sizes and GBA SP shells having tiny bit different tolerances make me even more worried. Do I just have to order one in and hope for the best?

    • @makho
      @makho  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Moshugaani I can't give you the answer that you want. Yes, you just have to order one and hope for the best. Tolerances on these things is worse than I had known with my limited testing (look, I only have so many SPs and I figured like 14 batteries would be more than good enough for a sample size) and the only work around is to keep trying different batteries or different shells or to just cut out the bottom of the battery compartment on your SP. If it doesn't fit perfectly flush and you're unhappy with that, contact Retromodding.

    Do I need this 3d printed thing? Or can I use such a lipo battery mod without it?

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The v1 version of this mod is designed that the PCB may be wedged into place and make contact with the battery terminals. It is NOT (intended to be) held in with the battery, the pressure from the wires, or the battery cover.
      v2 needs the bracket (or may be shimmed until you can wedge it)

    Any one know where I can buy that little connector he soldered on or what is the name of that part.

    • @makho
      @makho  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The battery connector is a 2 pin ACHR. The male port (the one that gets soldered to the board) is pretty cheap. The female one (the one that is on the battery) is cheap to get without the pins. If you order them without the pins, you still need to order the pins and a crimp tool. I have not been able to find pre-assembled pigtails for sale.

    Why some are having door bulge ?

    • @makho
      @makho  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tolerances. Some SPs have slightly smaller battery compartments and some batteries are slightly larger. If you get lucky enough, the battery won't fit properly and the door will bulge slightly.

  • @dymardo_
    @dymardo_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Makho, have you considered doing the same with PSP batteries? They have a higher chance of dying for some reason.

    • @makho
      @makho  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the PSP is a terribly designed console and is faulty from the factory. No, I'm not touching that shit heap.
      Batteries are always dead because Sony, in their infinite wisdom, designs the PSP to handshake any battery you use. This means that the battery has a small microcontroller in it. This microcontroller never switches off and puts a constant load on the battery cell. So whether you use the thing or not, the battery will always be flat after a week or two. This causes permanent battery damage quite frequently because there does not appear to be any low voltage protections either.

    • @dymardo_
      @dymardo_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makho I knew about the chip, but didn't know it drained the battery. I've seen mods where people remove the cell from the shell and connect another generic battery to it with higher capacity. I'm wondering what to do, since I have at least 3 faulty PSPs. Sell them as-is or attempt something with them.
