Colombia has 3 Health Care Systems, Sispen, PBS and Private.
In this video we will talk about, how the Colombian healthcare system works, how much it will more or less cost you and the conditions in order to get into the Colombian healthcare system.
We will leave out the Sispen because this is exclusively for the people that don't have any money and can't afford the other two options.
    PBS (EPS and IPS)
This is the health insurance anyone can get and there's no way they can exclude you. In order to get into the PBS system you need to have residency in Colombia, means, you need at least a cedula in order to apply for the PBS.
As I mentioned, the good thing is, they can't exclude you, the downside is everything takes longer. You always have to go to a general doctor in order to get to a specialist. An appointment with a specialist can take around 2 to 3 months or even longer, depending on the specialist you need.
    Private
The private system is a lot faster compared to the PBS system. One of the downsides though, is the age limit. You are only able to apply for the private system until 62 years old. As Luisa mentioned, Sura is working on something for people over 62 but that's not official yet. We will surely make another video with her as soon as the new option is available.
Watch the entire video in order to get even more knowledge about the healthcare system in Colombia including the deductibles and more!

Once the Cedula is obtained, enrolling in EPS is a matter of accessing Suramerica's online EPS application. Expat does not allow posting of the link to Suramerica application portal, but it is out there. Application is in Spanish...no need to hire a consultant...Google translator works, or a cup of coffee with a bilingual friend. Note, Suramerica does not pay insurance agents a fee for enrolling in EPS, you can be sure that 'helpful' agent is expecting/requiring you to ALSO enroll in the more lucrative (for the agent) private health coverage, i.e., add-on to EPS.

Yeah this information is really useful for foreigners. Is a really good place to live if you know all the info, like this. By the way, in Colombia there's only like 2 topics that upset the people. First is Escobar and second is saying ColUmbia instead of ColOmbia, just a friendly reminder =)

Please be aware: This woman works for a Sura, a private insurer with huge profit margins. Trick is to get your Sedula card, a government issued ID. Law firms can assist in the process - recommended.

Is it possible to get a private health insurance for a month or does it require a year contract? From what I understand prepagada works on top of EPS and EPS is for residents only. Is it the same with prepagada?

The Colombian health system is "universal" everybody has to right to receive urgent care if needed, "solidary" people who are working give 12.5% of their salary to maintain the system, so people who can't work or can't pay can receive treatment even for free. However, when there's a huge amount of people in the subsidized sub-system problems come, so it's not perfect and if you can have the private one is a good option
