    When you travel to a foreign country such as Colombia and plan to stay for a while you certainly want to make sure to stay connected. There are a lot of options and it can be overwhelming when you don't know where to start and what you need to make sure before even coming.
    We usually suggest to get a prepaid card. No matter if you are just visiting Colombia for a while or staying long term. There are a lot of different options that are similar to a plan but you don't have to make a contract at all.
    We usually try to stick to the easiest and best solutions and I can say out of experience, prepaid is the best solutions for us, at least at the moment. I use Claro because I had most experiences with Claro and I know how it works.
    Good thing is you can charge your cell phone almost everywhere on the go.
    Before coming to Colombia you should make sure your phone does NOT have a sim lock. We had a client with that exact problem, he just got a new phone in the states and didn't know about the sim lock. We already made the sim card at the time we realized that.
    The solution was to get a cheap smartphone for around USD 80. We also had the option to unlock the sim card in a store, but we never did that before. And on top of that he's phone was new, we didn't know if he would lose his 2 years warranty if we would take the sim lock out. In that specific case, we ended up getting the other cell phone.
    You usually don't need your passport to register the sim card, but because it's Colombia, we suggest to carry a copy of your passport or your drivers license with you. We registered several sim card with Claro so far, and made different experiences. Sometimes they needed the passport (copy is enough), in case our client forgot the passport the drivers license was enough too. We even had a store that was giving out sim card without registering at all. The sim card was already active, the client could even choose the phone number.
    Watch the full video to get even more tips.
    Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

    Sam, Another great informational video. I use the Simple Mobile Plan from the United States, my data and texting worked fine in Colombia for the entire time I was there and I did not have to get a Colombian Sim-card. As you pointed out it is mandatory to have some sort of data plan when a person is here in Colombia as a tourist. Keep up the great work and am looking forward to my next vacation to Medellin in a few months. Jeff

    Other (bit technical) tip: Avantel offers 4G plans, but those do not support 2/3G, now the fun part: my European Huawei phone didn't support the 4G band they use, so I had no data at all. I looked up which 4G bands where supported by my phone, and only Claro did have this band. I switched to Claro, now all is fine, btw Claro does support 2/3G so with a weaker signal you still have data.

    imei number is the unique phone (device) id number, it won't prevent a theft anyhow, if a phone is stolen they can block that imei in a country (and yet, some providers won't do that on stolen phones coming from another provider, 'cuz they just want new client's (thief's or his gf's) money, they don't care how he/she got a phone, they care about thier profit first, not some victim's one), but you can sell that phone on ebay etc to another country and it'll work most of the time abroad, especially if the carrier is not a multinational corp (claro equador may share imei database with claro co, and may not...), aslo state security would always want to know your imei, if you change sim card later they will still identify your device anytime on any country's network

    The rergistering process of the IEME number isn't quite as simple as you state. Part of the registration process requires you to provide a cedula number or a passport number. Note: Passport the emphasis 'a number'. Most passports are a combination of numbers and letters, which gets rejected by the registration process. I spent a happy hour at the Claro office in Unicentro at Laureles traversing that issue. This is not apparent during the registration process which I tried to do myself as a reasonable fluent spanish speaker.

    • @HowToExpat
      @HowToExpat  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. The thing in Colombia is that it all comes down to who you are working with. I did the IMEI registration with a couple of clients already. No problem at all. Even with letters.

    • @w0schmidt
      @w0schmidt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billbigd3644 So tell me how you would register your cellphone at a Claro office when the registration process requires you to produce a cédula or a passport plus evidence that you are the legal owner of the phone. That is what my previous comment was referring to. My comment did not state anything about carrying a passport with you everywhere in Colombia. Please read carefully before posting. Good luck my friend.

      Haha sounds like a typical web app bug, developers not thinking about the bigger picture. A strange choice for a country to put letters in its passport numbers though, 9 numerical digits is more than sufficient for the population of any country.

    • @w0schmidt
      @w0schmidt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seanlive6975 You are right. But that cost me over an hour at the Claro sucursal to fix and it was the agent who discovered it. In the end she used the first 6 numbers following the letters and number combo of my passport. The issue emanated from the government based web site and flowed on to the Claro app; which prevented me registering it myself. And none checked whether this was OK as it wasn't within the gambit of managing the process
