    So if you’re thinking about being an Expat in Colombia it’s very important to know what kind of visas are out there and what the requirements are for obtaining a visa. In this article we will cover:
    - How to get a Colombian tourist visa (stamp)
    - How to extend the Colombian tourist visa (stamp)
    - How to get a long term visa in Colombia as an Expat
    - How long it takes to get a Colombian visa
    - How much the costs are
    - How you can obtain dual-citizenship
    Here you find the new and updated information so you know what to expect when you want to apply for residency in Colombia.
    So a little disclaimer in the beginning I did this process myself. I’m an Expat here in Colombia, and went through the process myself. But the figures I will show you here and the processes they can change without notice.

    Info:
    The R-Visa technically is a permanent visa, but practically you have to renew it all 5 years anyway. (Don't ask me... it does not make sense :D)

      US State Department has issued a "DO NOT TRAVEL" advisory for US citizens going to Colombia; August 10, 2020. Level 4, RED.
      Also, Colombia's cancilleria.gov.co site for Tourist Visas says, "The first visitor’s visa must always be processed at Colombian consulates abroad. In all other cases, it may be granted in Bogota, provided the applicant has a valid visa." www.cancilleria.gov.co/en/content/tourist-visa

They are making some noise about crime and terrorism in remote areas, but the reality is that it's all about COVID-19. If you DO know of them, then are they reputable??? I do not know enough about them, but they supposedly help Expats obtain various visas. I think they do all the paperwork for foreigners/Expats for a certain fee of which I am willing to pay if it is reasonable. I am very interested in getting this type of paperwork and all the legal requirements done so that I can retire in Cali, Colombia hopefully by the end of this year 2021.Thank you again

    Hi Sam, bumped into this channel quick by accident, grateful for the accident though. Thanks for the information, it had been really really helpful. I have two quick questions 1. I have been on a work visa since May 2016 that I have had to review every year. In May 2021 when it come to reviewal again do I at this point start the process for an “R” visa and not an “M” visa? 2. How does the renewal process work with an “R” visa after this point, should it be granted in 2021. I hope my questions are clear. Thanks.

    • @HowToExpat
      @HowToExpat  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Terry. Thanks for the comment. I do not say you should not buy. Just be careful when doing so. A lot of real estate agencies promise big returns which usually are not the reality. But we will have a video coming out about that, but it will probably take 1-2 months. Meanwhile if you are interested in a rundown of, how it really is investing in real estate check out our Medellín E-Guide. One of the 21 videos is about real estate investment www.how-to-colombia.com/medellin-e-guide

    • @gnolan4281
      @gnolan4281 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As Sam says buying can be quite different than in the US for example. A friend of mine agreed on the price and at the closing the seller raised the price. Another friend agreed to pay the COP175 million asking price and the seller raised it by 10 million. In the US if a property does not sell for a long time the price will go lower to suit the realities of the market. In Medellin the price may very well go up instead. This may be du in part to the current automatic price inflation of 5-7% each January. Everybody gets a raise but all the prices go up. There does not seem to be a legal escrow for offer and acceptance money whereby if an offer is tendered at the asking price a deposit must be made and the seller is obligated to sell pending credit worthiness and an inspection & title search. You will likely pay all cash but I say this only to illustrate Sam's point that you must be prepared for curve balls. One strategy employed by newcomers is to rent for a while first in order to get the feel for the market. When it comes time to sell it may take a long time.
