    Honestly the way it decided to approach the thing it tried to parody was... pretty respectful. It didn't use the setting of Sesame Street and turn it into a gore, scarefest crap. In the end the puppets were abandoned and just wanted to do what they were supposed to do.

      Yeah, the only reason the (normal) puppets are hurting Gordon is because they're just...REALLY dumb, they want to do what they think they're the best at, but they just haven't done it for so long that they accidentaly hurt Gordon without knowing it
      Of course the larger puppets have different reasons
      Pearl is just blind and has no idea what she's doing, Ray thinks hitting you will "fix" things, Goblette is just scared and panicked, eating because of it. And the dogs are just hungy

    Watching this made me long for my childhood. You're right on about a lot of your thoughs Indie. As a Gen Xer, many of the early programs tried to teach us about being a neighbor, a friend, a member of the community; but by the time we reached the end of the 80s the shows we watched taught us to be combative, to question everything and to be guarded. As someone in my early 50s, it makes me realize how much we've lost as a society. Thanks to the developers, the programmers and to you. Hopefully, all of us can get a glimpse of a better tomorrow and help us strive to reach the same.

      That is right, although both of them is justifiable, and understandable, it's like this saying: to have trust is to be willing to be betrayed,
      The implication of both is that one gives us a more hospitable a friendlier environment although with a risk of being manipulated, but the other option cause us to be more distant, and wary of each other, sure it'll probably keep you safe, but you'll never feel such healthy communities, no warmth in friendship, and no security in other people.
      But still, we can do both, to have trust in others in a realistic way, and also being ok with some level of betrayal, just that people has different methods on differing what is realistic and what is not... so meh hehehee
      Hmm, although some communities like some countries do have different levels, america has a feel of ambition and efficiency, countries in europe has a feel of fulfillment and enjoyment of life, and some in between, and also some countries like the above,
      In America such ambitions can be prone to rivalry so idk,
      The causes of the coop up citizens may be;
      Other than the american noosphere, it may be the infrastructure of the city, urbanist channels may explain better than me; not just bikes, city beautiful, etc, but still, this is a chicken or the egg problem, but the timing suggest the vietnam war happened first, so maybe the infrastructure's animosity feel like nature came from that, idk

    • @cctomcat321
      @cctomcat321 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @MrJaces because the student loan debt forgiveness would actually help relieve the pressure of debt and be an action of class solidarity where most of the PPP loans went to businesses who didn' really need it, and the ones who did couldn't get it.
      Millions of dollars of *debt* was *forgiven.*
      Not hard to draw the parallels. Difference is, people in congress and senate weren't getting student loans forgiven, and it was far more than 10-20k.
      MTG had $183.5k forgiven, alone.
      The point being student loan forgiveness is a _good_ thing. Or if you're going to complain, be consistent.

    • @appalachiabrauchfrau
      @appalachiabrauchfrau ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrJaces You're being a little naive. You can look up who near you had PPP loans forgiven, a guy near me makes people counters and had over 100k forgiven. He has no employees and no physical storefront, covid did not hurt him at all -- in fact he sold MORE because businesses wanted to keep track of how many folks were in their stores in order to regulate social distancing. He had no reason to have 3 fully forgiven PPP loans -- and he suddenly has a boat and pool, how ODD.
      Student loan forgiveness would stimulate the economy, PPP loans did the same but it was fraud at a very high level and a great amount of that is likely hoarded.

    Thank you SO MUCH for actually going through the game actually reading and chatting about the lore as you find it!! But thanks again for spend a little more time and energy going through the story with us. 💜

      @kimberlynaa. ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree with this so much!!! Other players just run through and skip notes/the story, and they complain and say, "I don't get it, I don't understand what's going on!". And then they say the game sucks, when in reality, the creators took their time and effort making a story for a reason and the game ends up being amazing. (Not always but most of the time). This game deserved the exploring, reading, acknowledging every puppet and backstory. This was worth the 2 hrs. ♡

    • @Beauty_Bot
      @Beauty_Bot ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@kimberlynaa. It's so fucking infuriating. I work in games journalism and am working on switching over to writing for games. I just *know* that if/when that happens, some dipshit will make a YT video about how the story makes no sense after refusing to read the carefully crafted two-paragraph codex entries and collectible items I painstakingly wrote to leave narrative breadcrumbs for the player to follow. That, or I'll write some voicelogs for them to find and they'll yell over them for the entire game, not listening to a single word, and then come to the same conclusion: ending makes no sense/game sucks.
      MatPat's Game Theory on Subnautica is a perfect example. He glossed over the lore, barely glanced at any of it, and came to the conclusion that the player's actions will ultimately irradiate the planet and destroy it, which makes no sense lore-wise, no sense science-wise, and is openly proven to be untrue in the sequel, set 10 years after the original game (it's also proven to be untrue in the original game). You're literally saving the fucking ecosystem in that game, not destroying it. It has a lot of codex entries to read which can get overwhelming, but it's easy to figure out which ones are just flavor text and which ones very much need to be read. So annoying. Like if you hate lore, that's fine. Play the game and ignore the lore. Just don't act like your opinion on the game matters/is worth sharing when you openly refused to interact with or pay attention to literally half of the game.
      It's one thing if they've played it before and don't wanna reread everything, but for the most part, the "I ain't reading all that, pause this video if you wanna read it" YT crowd is just...ugh. Even Markiplier does it sometimes and then gets confused, but he's not nearly as bad about it as some others are.

    • @nikolaiwarynski
      @nikolaiwarynski ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, that's true. That's why I watch only IGP's let's plays. He's literally only TH-camr that's not only actually reads notes (adding to it pretty cool editing), but most importantly thinking about the lore, making theories in real-time.

    • @Beauty_Bot
      @Beauty_Bot ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@nikolaiwarynski Yes, such a good point about theorizing in real-time. It's crazy to me that so many people can, like IGP, play very similar games in the same genre (survival horror/thriller/sci-fi, in this case) for YEARS. Like, hundreds of these games. Yet unlike IGP, after YEARS of playing the same types of games over and over, so many of them still haven't figured out that unless you're doing a speedrun, the lore is fucking important. ESPECIALLY in games where atmosphere is everything.
      Again, using Subnautica as an example, the first time you see a Reaper Leviathan and hear its roar, you're like oh god oh fuck oh no oh shi--. You'll often hear that roar in the distance, in murky water where you may only see a short flash of a fin, or nothing at all. But if you manage to scan a Reaper, the codex entry explains that they're blind, and use echolocation to see prey. The codex entry explains that if you can hear the Reaper, it can see you. That shit made my blood run cold, gave me valuable gameplay info (ie: I no longer assumed I was safe if I just heard a distant roar but saw nothing), and also just gave me an immense sense of dread, really upping the tense atmosphere.
      Sorry for the rant, people just don't know what they're missing. As a games journalist, I get all kinds of shit ("[game company] paid you for that review!!!!11 How dare u give good score to confusing badgame!?!!1") and it's just like, nah man, it's just my opinion... but also I can tell you didn't read a damn word of the lore so kindly go cyberbully someone else and try to use actual facts lmao.
      IGP > the rest.

    This entire game is a metaphore for depression, cynicism, empathy and personal purpose.
    Despite all the travesties, lies, and manipulation shoved in our faces, there is still "good" out there. In fact, it's these "good" choices that Gordon makes, that create moments that actual mean something, like helping certain puppets with their specific problems. Not only does helping the puppets remove obsticles from Gordon's perspective of the world, but it also benefits more than just Gordon, making the world a slightly better place than if he just treated them all as monsters.
    It's easy to convince ourselves, in our own minds, that people acting in ways that inconvenience or harm us in certain ways, are monsters that need to be avoided or stopped at all costs. What's difficult, is ignoring such thoughts. Understanding that these people, like ourselves, have problems of their own that cause them to act out in ways that aren't necessarily charicteristic of who they are, or even who they dream to be.
    *_*Spoiler*_*
    Notice how doing something selfless is the good ending of the game, despite it costing Gordon his job? The _real_ bad ending, is Gordon getting promoted. Despite doing what is expected of him, getting promoted and earning more money, Gordon's depression remains, and festers. Slowly eating away at him, as there is no "light" left in his life.
    This is a translation to real life expectation for what "success" is. Many might say "Well, wealth and fame are obvious forms of success!", yet media constantly reminds us of how unhappy celebreties often are, with alcoholism, drug addiction, and a variety of psychological disorders. Ask yourself; "If wealth and fame are successful, then why are so many celebreties miserable?". The answer is;
    1. Wealth and fame do not = happyness
    2. it's not just celebreties. We only see it happen to celebreties more, because paparazzi make celebrety personal lives public.
    True success/purpose differs from person to person, and can be one of the most difficult things to identify for ones self. Maybe it's authoring a book, creating a game, saving people as a doctor, discovering cures to an illness as a chemist/microbiologist, understanding how the world works as a physicist, or so many other possibilities. It doesn't have to be something grandiose. It just needs to have personal value to you, as long as it doesn't inhibit other people's right to exist.

Those are pretty solid foundational intro to creative writing course books that (iirc) you can find for free if you poke around libgen. Good luck in your writing career, hobby or otherwise!

    • @Eightfinger

      Is he though? He becomes a good hearted person in the end, but before that he seems resentful and on the edge to bitterness. (Some of his remarks are rather spitful. Not completely mean, but also not good or pure hearted) Rather seems like he is a struggling person, and in the end you can decide on which side of life he'll end up.

It was beautiful and sad, and i love how they didn't force any fluff or feel good moments, up until the very end where they let you choose. And while i also would have chosen the ''light'' I think choosing the ''dark'' was a perfectly sad ending to a perfectly sad story.

    It definitely was referencing Vietnam. My great grandfather, though he didn't serve in the Vietnam War (he served in the Korean War), kept tabs in regards to the war in Vietnam. What he witnessed after the veterans returned greatly saddened him and is the reason why he talked me out of enlisting when I turned 18. That and he preferred seeing his grandson in one piece rather than in multiple pieces or missing a piece

I think some ominous sounds would have been perfect at certain points of the game.

    “It’s hard to describe… It’s like your lost in a tunnel, until suddenly a voice calls your name. And you turn around and you see the rising sun. And it’s so bright, maybe it hurts a little to look at. But you don’t care, because it’s leading you home.”

    I think this game is something worth playing...and is extremely deep, when you put it in the historical context of American society in the period from the 1960's-today. It's effectively a collective psychoanalysis. What Ricky said while Gordon was on the Tower, the final address from the show's creator, the little bits of reading on the so-called "Northern War" (just substitute Vietnam War), the dark turn storytelling (for both children and adults) took during the 80's and 90's...we embraced it because we thought it was more "real" than the kinder alternatives. I did the same thing, in my youth. But...I can't argue with Ricky. The rich were awful eager for us to embrace this dark turn, at least after a fashion. Nobody tries to fix anything if they're convinced there's no point in doing so.
    It's true the rich pushed mindless optimism, and still does. But it pushes mindless pessmism just as hard.
    Reflect on your own life; how many of us have been Gordon's pushing away the Ricky's of the world? I certainly am guilty of it. And...it fills me with great shame.
