I like to think of this version as the aged one. The one that carries Eddie's whole life. He might not be feeling all those things while writing and performing this song in his days. Now it carries a completely different meaning for him and to us. Can't imagine the things that goes on his head while singing this song to this day. This song was a gift, a blessing, a reminder of how we've all been through the black. I thank Sir Eddie Veddar for everything he's given to us. A lifetime of memories fit into one perfect song.
This was the song playing at my best friends' funeral as her casket was leaving the room, as Pearl Jam was her favourite band. She was only 25. I think of her every day
And here I am, four years later, crying my eyes out listening to this song. Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Eddie Vedder will forever be my idols. They represent everything that is good to me. It's sometimes unbelievable how you can feel so much from people you never met (or will never meet), but they have talked to each one of us directly, and said some much more meaningful things that whoever is around us. I feel it, I was almost at that point, but I am still here, to remember them. Thank you.
I love how Vedder down plays his voice so he can take in his fans voices singing in harmony over the loss of one of the most precious souls that ever existed in the music industry ❤ R.I.P Cornell.
as l get older and have been on this planet long enough now. l realize some people's beautiful/pure, kind hearts don't belong in this evil/hateful, putrid world, that's why they move on to a much kinder, peaceful place where they can and are understood. much love to you all🙏🏻
Words just can't describe this human being. His reason for being here is profoundly defined. We Love you Eddie and many of us understand how you feel. Know we are with you brother 🤙 Shaka
There is not one song in the world that translates feeling to me as strongly as this one, for as depressed i've been and as many fucking devastating songs i've heard before, this one is the constant. It breaks me, it makes me weep without fail, it touches my soul. This is what art is, a transmission of feelings, feelings so deep and so pure that only through a medium such as music can they truly be translated. I see so many covers of this song where everyone has a fantastic voice, yet they all fail because they don't feel it, they don't go to this place. You need to understand that feeling is all black is about, so if you don't feel it, you can have the worlds most angelical voice and you would still fail.
Totally agree. It’s the first song that ever brought me to tears and I didn’t even know what was happening! Brings me back to laying on my bed at 16 years old and that same emotion that I had then. It’s an emotional masterpiece!
Beautifully expressed. If a song doesn’t make me FEEL something across the scale of emotions - joy, heartbreak, uplifting, makes me want to dance, get fired up, turned on, or the longing ache of loneliness ‘wanting to know what love is’ , it ends up sounding like the adults of Charlie Browns world, wah wah wah. Very few current artists with the exception of Adele, Pink and even at times Miley - she sings Nothing Else Matters with Metallica that blows me away. I’m a classic rock/ 80’s to early 90’s person for the most part. Eddie is one of the few voices that fall into the ‘timeless’ category for me. Just Breathe is an all time fave. If you haven’t seen his duet with Yusuf Cat Stevens of Father & Son from Global Citizen, check it out. It should be required listening! You seem so in tune with the soul of music. Do you ever get messages thru music? When I am sad, depressed, kicking myself about something I can’t go back and fix or despondent (just a sample of a few), a certain song will come on. Whatever ‘lesson’ I need to hear at that particular time, seems to scream the lyrics into my heart. It’s hard to describe. I guess my most relatable example is being in a very dark emotional place, abusing pain medication, in love with someone who didn’t love me back and all I could see was the path of sadness and self destruction ahead of me. I started driving hoping something would happen to end my pain. Stairway to Heaven came on the radio. I was on autopilot, unable to snap out of the hopelessness, it was as if time stood still and MADE me listen to the following lyrics - yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there’s still time to change the road you’re on’ It changed my life. The other comes from the amazing Freddie Murcury in BoHo Rhapsody - I don’t want to die. I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all, followed by Brian Mays guitar sound like it’s crying. Another song I had heard a billion times suddenly screaming what I needed to hear. I couldn’t live without music. It’s saved my life on so many levels. The silly 70’s pop I grew up with, kept my spirits up during lockdown. I’m rambling. I just relate to your thoughts about the song/music. #lifelessons #musicheals
My dad passed away in August of last year, and this was his favorite Pearl Jam song, and Pearl Jam was his favorite band. I remember sometime earlier last year he sat me down and we watched this version of Black and while he cried, I didnt. I hope he knows I am now.
2023 and it still makes me cry. I saw Chris in one of his last concerts. I went alone for the first time ever. I was very depressed and self medicating at the time. It will stay with me forever ❤️ he may be gone but still impacts people to this day. That’s the epitome of a legend. Millions miss you Chris
Umbrace Titan are you crazy? Chris had by far the best voice, he was the most versatile and technical. All 4 are amazing singers but Chris was on a whole other level.
@@elby6980 eh my opinion your opinion. Layne I thought always had the "grungiest" voice that felt so alive but was also able to somehow mix that violent voice with emotion and make songs like down in a hole. Can’t get over Chris being gone. Can’t wait to see Pearl Jam for the first time at Wrigley, my top two favorite artists of all time, Eddie is the only one left standing, may you live to be 100
This is one of the very very few occasion where I am happy that someone filmed on his phone. Good quality and sound... And now I need to wipe those fucking tears off my face. I tried not to break, I felt them coming up on the "we belong together", then the break down on the last "come back" opened the gate. Music cannot get more real than this.
Así es, cómo no iba a recordar a su gran hermano, pensar que de un momento a otro se fue y no tuvo la posibilidad de despedirse, Eddie siempre se ha caracterizado por expresar sus emociones y no podía aguantar más...
I still can’t watch this without bawling. I was a teenager in the 90’s and these guys were the soundtrack to my life at the time. It’s not fair so many are gone. Time to wrap Eddie in a bubble.

My girlfriend and I saw Pearl Jam in Ottawa recently. I am a changed man now. The best band ever. Moving, emotional, thoughtful music. I feel blessed to have been able to witness Pearl Jam Live.
Eddie is such an amazing man. The stuff he does with Steve Gleason and the A.L.S. community makes him a saint. This song is the only way I feel that can actually come close to the pain I feel from losing my husband and childrens father.
Chris is still living in Eddie's voice and music. A part of every dear who has died still keeps on living in us who loved him/her. In our movenents, in our actions, in our tasks. We belong together... Our task does not end with death. Thanks Eddie for this song, it catches straight my heart and memories....
Holy fuck, I forgot how unbearable the ending is in this version. When he broke down saying "come back" it felt like somebody reached in, grabbed my soul, beat the living shit out of it and left it for dead. I haven't felt such pain in a very long time. There are way too few people that can do this via singing. Long live Eddie!
First time I have seen this version of Black. You expressed every thought spinning around in my heart & head right now. “Come back…” ripped my heart into a million pieces. I know that kind of heartbreak. To put it all out there is a brave and beautiful thing. God Bless Eddie Vedder. I don’t know how he made it through the song to be honest. From the first note, the heartache of loss was palpable.
It’s absolutely incredible how emotional this song made me. I would never think a youtube clip could jerk as many tears as this one did. Eddie, you’re such a joy. This world is lucky to have you, we’re lucky to have you. Thank you ❤️

Pearl Jam has always been my favorite group of musicians and are the reason for me picking up a guitar and singing. Sometimes through my musical journey I forget about these guys but I always come back and realize that this is the group that started it all for me. Every time I listen to this song it brings me back to 1992. This is also the song that I listen to over and over and over again when my wife passed away in 2017, I can hear, see and feel his pain when he’s singing this as he shares the same pain I do. It’s definitely hard losing someone and I wish it upon no one. He's barely keeping together at the end. Powerful performance - lots of love for his lost friend
All those moans... Even his voice was crying for Chris.
I can't imagine how hard it was for him to perform this. Chris Cornell was an amazing talent
And Also and amazing Soul and Human Being
7 years now wow, i remember this the day it happened, my heart still hurts
May the Legends rock on forever in eternity 🤘🏻🎸
I like to think of this version as the aged one. The one that carries Eddie's whole life. He might not be feeling all those things while writing and performing this song in his days. Now it carries a completely different meaning for him and to us. Can't imagine the things that goes on his head while singing this song to this day. This song was a gift, a blessing, a reminder of how we've all been through the black. I thank Sir Eddie Veddar for everything he's given to us. A lifetime of memories fit into one perfect song.
Amen.
That is a brilliant and probably very true assessment. Well said my friend .
This was the song playing at my best friends' funeral as her casket was leaving the room, as Pearl Jam was her favourite band. She was only 25. I think of her every day
Kurt, Layne, Chris & Eddie.... Nothing could ever compare to these legends! EVER!!!! SEATTLE SOUND FOREVER 😔
Thanks for your love and support I really appreciate

And here I am, four years later, crying my eyes out listening to this song. Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Eddie Vedder will forever be my idols. They represent everything that is good to me. It's sometimes unbelievable how you can feel so much from people you never met (or will never meet), but they have talked to each one of us directly, and said some much more meaningful things that whoever is around us. I feel it, I was almost at that point, but I am still here, to remember them. Thank you.
Lovely
I miss Chris Cornell every day
“The fire that burns twice as bright, burns twice as fast” R.I.P to all the musical legends that have gotten us to where we are today
The audience is beautiful.
I love how Vedder down plays his voice so he can take in his fans voices singing in harmony over the loss of one of the most precious souls that ever existed in the music industry ❤ R.I.P Cornell.
Anyone who doesn't get emotional with this song and this interpretation, is already dead inside 💔
this song makes me cry every time. We all belong together. Flesh is an illusion.
Its all a joke, I say.
as l get older and have been on this planet long enough now. l realize some people's beautiful/pure, kind hearts don't belong in this evil/hateful, putrid world, that's why they move on to a much kinder, peaceful place where they can and are understood. much love to you all🙏🏻
Words just can't describe this human being. His reason for being here is profoundly defined. We Love you Eddie and many of us understand how you feel. Know we are with you brother 🤙 Shaka
You’re right. An Old Soul, doing his Calling :-)
Cornell was a healer/shaman in all his lifetimes and always will be in future
What a great way to be a great holy man nowadays- be a rockstar 🤘😎🎸
Perfectly said ♥️
There is not one song in the world that translates feeling to me as strongly as this one, for as depressed i've been and as many fucking devastating songs i've heard before, this one is the constant.
You have to go to the place while singing it, read your opinion, I agree.
Greetings.
It makes me weep.
My dad passed away in August of last year, and this was his favorite Pearl Jam song, and Pearl Jam was his favorite band. I remember sometime earlier last year he sat me down and we watched this version of Black and while he cried, I didnt. I hope he knows I am now.
I’m so sorry for your loss! He knows, he sees!
😢
He knows... Sry for your loss.
This comment made me cry. Sorry for your loss
Stay strong.
I'm not crying, you're crying...
You're goddamn right I am 😭😭😭
No I’m not, someone splashed my face with a cup of water... ok, I’m crying.
Yes you are.
It's the onions.
Two of the best of our generation Eddie & Chris(RIP)
Noel Gilroy You think so? I’d say it’s Layne then Chris. Can’t stand Vedder.
@@christar9527 eddie then layne for me. Chris is good but voice wise nothing compared to them
Umbrace Titan are you crazy? Chris had by far the best voice, he was the most versatile and technical. All 4 are amazing singers but Chris was on a whole other level.
@@elby6980 eh my opinion your opinion. Layne I thought always had the "grungiest" voice that felt so alive but was also able to somehow mix that violent voice with emotion and make songs like down in a hole. I love Chris and back with stp he was amazing and right with eddie and layne. I just thought audioslave he was always a little mediocre. Its hard to compare legends bro
Umbrace Titan Layne is my favourite singer, but if we are talking about the ‘best SINGER’ out of the 4, Chris wins every time followed by Layne, then Eddie, then Kurt
This has to be one of the most beautiful performances I’ve ever seen...
Lost my Dad yesterday morning new years eve 2021 at six am about 24 hours ago. I cried. I love you Dad. Will see you again one day. When freedom has overwhelmed us both and death has been swallowed up in Victory. Then I will see you again.
Everytime I listen to this song it moves me beyond any other...it's truly indescribable.
I know, right. At that time I had no phone and I asked the man next to me to shoot that video. He sent it to me right away and I am so happy to have that memory kept. ( :
It's true
Can’t get over Chris being gone. Can’t wait to see Pearl Jam for the first time at Wrigley, my top two favorite artists of all time, Eddie is the only one left standing, may you live to be 100

This is one of the very very few occasion where I am happy that someone filmed on his phone. Good quality and sound...
And now I need to wipe those fucking tears off my face.
I tried not to break, I felt them coming up on the "we belong together", then the break down on the last "come back" opened the gate.
Music cannot get more real than this.
2022 and thought I’d give this another listen. Hairs standing on end all over my body and a tear in my eye whilst sitting at my desk. Beautiful.
“come back” i’m crying so hard right now :(
I still can’t watch this without bawling. I was a teenager in the 90’s and these guys were the soundtrack to my life at the time. It’s not fair so many are gone. Time to wrap Eddie in a bubble.
This song and hearing Eddie's broken and painfully beautiful voice already makes me cry.... seeing him cry at the end of this and knowing why quite literally made me cry a river 😭
I've never seen Eddies voice break in the middle of a song.... but now i found the only thing that can...
COME BACK-- COME BACK ...You can feel the emotion ,hurt, loneliness in the words....hats off to eddie im not sure how he kept it together much as he did.thanks eddie.rest easy Chris, layne, kurt, you guys are never forgotten.sad that the time was so short.play it loud for the heavens!!!
RIP Chris Cornell 😭
RIP Chester Benington 😭
Yes, may Chester RIP. But let him away of Chris Cornell, he was out of Chirs league,
It's heart wrenching to hear him sing with so much passion "come back". If only the greats knew how much they were missed and adored they were.
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
Very grateful we still have Eddie in this world. One of the greatest singers from the 90's.
My girlfriend and I saw Pearl Jam in Ottawa recently. I am a changed man now. The best band ever. Moving, emotional, thoughtful music. I feel blessed to have been able to witness Pearl Jam Live.
Eddie you know he loved you. We can always still feel both of yall together..
Eddie is such an amazing man. The stuff he does with Steve Gleason and the A.L.S. community makes him a saint. This song is the only way I feel that can actually come close to the pain I feel from losing my husband and childrens father.
wow he sounds a million times better live
Idk about that, he sounds good both ways!
...and it was only Eddie and his guitar, awesome!!!

After Chris Cornell's passing this song has a whole new meaning to me.
Chris is still living in Eddie's voice and music. A part of every dear who has died still keeps on living in us who loved him/her. In our movenents, in our actions, in our tasks. We belong together... Our task does not end with death. Thanks Eddie for this song, it catches straight my heart and memories....
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
When he sings come back it just gets me
Holy fuck, I forgot how unbearable the ending is in this version.
Thank you ❤️
I dedicate this to my bestie of 50 years, Pete, who passed away suddenly a few months ago. This was his favorite Pearl Jam song.
RIP to him and Chris.. 😭😔

I started crying already when he started singing this for Chris....goddamn it!!! Why does life have to be this way????

instead of another miscarriage, or stillborn

it was never dedicated to chris.
Chris is the only celebrity that I ever shed a tear for. Some of the best years of my life included listening to Soundgarden.
This song has always torn me to pieces but that ending.....
I could just die listening to this song. So intense ... plus it's dedicated to Chris. This is pure blues reinvented by grunge.
this song is truly beautiful, Eddie's music has been such a gift to so many people... Thank you Pearl Jam for inspiring me to play music, introducing me to a new musical genre and most of all helping me heal and deal with my wife being gone.R.I.P Chris Cornell and R.I.P Alora DeMoines
