    I'm swedish and I remember when the Carolus Rex album came out and I had to actually debate people to get it into their heads that no, Sabaton isn't a extreme right wing band. Before that when the Art of War album came out it was the "no, Sabaton aren't gloryfying war" debate. Some people are just very quick to jump to conclusions, especially after being politically correct became a thing. People here have really taken that to another level unfortunately.
    I think that one additional fact about Carl XII (Carolus Rex) is that many people who are on the extreme right have sort of chosen him as their patron saint as it were. Hence why he is such a controversial figure today. Sort of: If the racist/nazi crowd likes him I can't like him because then I'll be one too. Or other people will think that I am. Which is a pretty effed up way of thinking but it's sadly the state of things.

    • @HistoryBuff

      Wow, thats terrible. Again, almost the same concept with trump. Out of the 2 parties, of course American white supremists are going to gravitate to Trump. That doesn't automatically make him or his level-headed supporters one. If Hitler liked jelly donuts, does that make us Nazis if we also enjoyed them? Ok, probably a bad comparison. Maybe a closer one is Americans completely throwing out everything our founding fathers stood for because slavery existed. Yes, slavery was horrible, but don't throw away everything else amazing that came out of it!

    • @LianteakaLia

      @@HistoryBuff I completely get what you mean. I think many people have a very black and white way of looking at things and completely missing the gray areas in between. It's either this or that and forgetting the neuances. Same with history, we want to bury and forget the stuff we find uncomfortable or that we simply don't like. And like you said, if something has one bad side to it, then the whole thing is bad. Instead of admitting that, yea, this part here was effed up but this other part was pretty amazing. The fact that Washington was willing to give up his power in favour of a democratic society, which was pretty much unthinkable in Europe at the time is one pretty amazing bit of history and one to be proud of.
      A good example of accepting the good with the bad is the Vikings, I think. :) I think most people would say that the Vikings were badass. Well, us nordic countries had slaves (trälar as it was called in Swedish) during the Viking age. And capturing people to sell into slavery was a very lucrative trade. This fact is something I most people want to forget. Is that particular part of our history something I'm proud of as a Swede? No. Absolutely not. It's pretty horrible. Do I think that the whole culture was horrible because of that? Eff no! :P I'm proud of that heritage while at the same time being able to admit that there were really bad things going on.

      I have always been curious why the neo-nazis and extreme right-wingers are so in love with Carl XII ? Others did better than him, but ofc he was always the underdog.

    • @LianteakaLia
      @LianteakaLia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@secularnevrosis I completely agree with you there. There's no picking favourites in history and ignoring everything else. That's a very dangerous and slippery slope to head down.
      And you and me both. Why they chose him have been something I've been wondering about since I was a teen. He made some very questionable desicions (invading russia) and the swedish empire wasn't exactly in a good place by the time of his death. And while there are some information that paint him as a really intruiging character and a harsh but fair military commander I just can't see what makes him -the- icon for their supposed swedish supremacy. It just doesn't make any sense.

      Which just makes it even more impressive how long they actually held out. Since if the Swedish army was defeated like Poltava anywhere, it would be impossible for them to win the war. Just one real defeat could bring down an Empire. Ofcourse it was like that for most countries, but the smaller ones in the war, like Denmark and the smaller German states. If they were defeated it would be nigh impossible to raise another army, unlike Russia.

    I've noticed that many Swedes and Swedish descendants slide unconsciously and effortlessly into very formal stances when onstage, or having a photo taken, etc. You could see it when Joachim pulled his heels together and extended his arms to rally the crowd. Tobias Forge of "Ghost BC" is another good example -- very staunch gestures and body language. I don't know why that is, or what that says about us, if anything. It's not universal, but something I see repeated time and again. ••• Thanks! Peace! (-:

    us a lot how ordinary swedes suffered, during our long time off non stop war campaigns, all started by our kings and queen Kristina.
    Translation “ The company from Orsa can’t promise anything but we try as hard as we can”
    The only living people left in this small village was old men, women and children, everyone else was gone to war and
    not to been seen again. But the king still asked for more soldiers to send.
    I’m very proud we have been war free for almost 200 years now, a very short time in our long

    This movie was a joint operation between russian and swedish film makers, obv the russians wanted in coz theyd win in the end. Also the thing that made the swedish Carouleans so victorious against sometimes 1vs5 oppocition was their tactics. usually battalians walked up to 80 meters and started firing. The Swedish just went forward to 50? meters and shot forst wolley and then kneeled and shot second and after that they continued forward to 25 meters and shot the last wolley. After that they just rushed forward into melee and this was not normal in these days. After many Russian losses they learned and adapted witch u can see in this video they have these small "forts" breaking up the swedish attack making it useless, if they were same numbers it wouldnt matter but the russians have always had more men than the swedes.

    The Caroleans were insane good fighters. The reason they won so many battles while outnumbered in ways that all odds were aginst them was because of their tactics.
    During that time it was normal to fire at 100 yards. The Caroleans on the other hand took that first bullet and kept marching to 50 yards. Then the front half fired, they kept marching to 25 yards, the second half fired and then they charged with spears. And all of that with stoicism and no fear of death. That‘s how they won battles were they were outnumbered 4:1 and stuff

    You dont know the words to the Swedish version. All the swedish versions are far better written than the English versions on the album. It is panfully clear when tou find "En Livstid i Krig" The english version is like a compleetly different song, and it barly scratch the surface while the swedish version cuts veterans deep.

    • @The1rust
      @The1rust 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't think it's a matter of being worse or better but rather providing a different meaning on the songs which is one of the more unique and interesting features of this band. Instead of a song which is directly translated and finished you have a song with two different perspectives to paint a more detailed and humanizing picture of people and events which makes some of them harder to compare. En Livstid I Krig is very much a different song between both versions because of this.
      That being said, I too prefer the Swedish versions.

      @@marxistvalorie No, the Swedish version cuts deeper, it is written in the perspective of a swedish soldier in the 30 years war, but it could represent any soldier in any war. It is the song about the Father and Son, or the Husband and Friend who never returned home, whether it is they are killed in battle or return home as an empty shell destroyed with PTSD.
      The Swedish version is more truly about the human sacrifice of sending people to wars that often has little to no meaning for them.

    A little note on the Carolean (The Swedish troops were called Caroleans, or Karoliner in Swedish) tactics at the time.
    Where you mentioned how everyone were patiently standing and exchanging volleys of bullets. The Swedish army was usually at a numerical disadvantage, so they couldn't afford to try to maintain that kind of battle.
    They would instead only shoot a couple of volleys once they had gotten into a very close distance and then charged forward to engage in melee before the opponent had time to finish reloading and shoot again.

Ultima Thule went Through it all too. Nowadays they finally gets recognition for not being neonazi. Im saying this because Media in sweden and from what i can see also in USA follow an agenda to willify national proudness and history. When i was in school in the 90's we had 7 out of 10 teachers being either communists or left leaning. Which meant the history lessons got skewered left. Thats when i started to ask serious questions and read up on history OUTSIDe of school time....both religios histoy about alot of religions and lots of the worlds history....Then i put the squeeze on the teachers and it was ugly to see how propaganda machines work.

Me myself played with 2 politicians from socialdemokraterna back in the 90's on stage.
