I feel like what happened is Sean took advantage of the mandatory pose system. He conceded the back pose and focused on the poses he could win and went all out on those. He also posed to show his strengths even in the poses he lost .
Phil looked smooth in the front lat spread, Shawn looked conditioned. Shawn had aesthetics and better symmetry and a more appealing "pleasing" look in the front double-biceps shot and, I would argue this year, even the back double biceps shot. Comparison may sound odd but it was like Arnold showed up in 1975 a little smaller, tighter, drier, and just overall better conditioned than Lou. Similar here in most poses as to why Shawn overtook Phil and deservedly so!

well just as i said earlier looking at them all requires much more close in depth analysis which will always be subjective depending on the digression of the judges . The best way out is performance test, I mean strength test projects that will clearly distinguish who is who in the next Mr Olympia ...body analysis will always result to subjectivity all the time...They all really deserve it ..Thanks

Shawn has better structure, like those classic bodybuilders: long legs, tiny waist, broad shoulders. The same reason why people love Arnold still with 1/4th muscle of today's bodybuilders. You can add muscle, but you cannot change structure.

I think Phil’s quads, arms and back are way better then Shawn’s, Phil is definitely more muscular but his gut is bad. Shawn had a better physique, came in with way better conditioning won from the side, Shawn deserves to win, looks like a true champion, Phil’s struggling, he has the muscle to beat everyone but his gut and conditioning arnt Olympia worthy this year and same with like two other years
I agree with everything you said, minus the most muscular pose. I would still have to give that to Phil. Regardless of his gut sticking out a bit, every muscle pops out at you, whereas with Shawn I didn’t see that as much.
Hey, Nick! I question your reasoning on some of these. In the "side tricep" you say "even though Shawn looks incredibly elsewhere, Phils triceps blow him out of the water - and this is a side-tricep pose!" -- Then, with the front double biceps - where you could've applied the same reasoning, you say "Phils flow isn't as good / the midsection doesn't look good". What's your thought on this? Front double bicep, is, after-all, a bicep-pose. And if you're too apply the logic you did on side-triceps, you should've have Phil winning that pose as well.
There are a handful of reasons why Phil took second. One major reason was lack of conditioning and inability to hold poses. I feel like the judges saw this especially as the night show went on, he became to falter and breathe heavily. This made his waist expand alot and almost certainly ripped his incision and mesh. He had been taxing his body way to much. It would have been best if he took time off and recovered properly. He's still young. From the back he was unstoppable and had more detail than shawn. However, as the night went on this began to change as Shawn progressively began to get more rounded and harder. From the side it was close but Phil definitely had the edge. So in truth yes it was the abdominal control and Phil's breathing that messed him up. We haven't seen a lights out Phil Heath in a long time. But this goes to show anyone can be beaten in bodybuilding. With the Asian Grand Pre over, we basically got an idea of what's next for some of the other divisions. I'd say the door is wide open for 212 and classic. Men's physique still confuses me just as much as women's bikini. But that's how things go. I'm excited for the open. Nathan, Juan, Cedric and Brandon are only getting better. William certainly isn't far behind. Kai is as always a mystery but seeing him pose next to William, Cedric or even Ramy would be great. Roelly is chomping at the bit to win an Olympia. He just needs a smaller more conditioned waist. 2019 is going to be a good year for bodybuilding. Just saying it now because there's so many guys out there looking like future champions. And let's not forget Lionel Beyeke and Steve Kuclo. Two guys I feel can definitely take a bunch of pro shows once they dial in properly.

Phil looked VERY unhealthy up there. His huge gut spilling out and his labored breathing really detracted from all the poses. I absolutely believe he'd have won if he came in less pregnant and more athletic. There are many pics and vids that show Phil's body parts simply being BETTER, but also many shots where his posing looks like shit. In a lot of ways, this was a tortoise vs hare matchup.

OMG! Look at the Forearms @ 02:13 ...Doesn`t Phil have twice the size of forearms here? Same to the Chest! Only the Shoulderwith and the Abs have an advantage in this Pose. And Phils shoulders also look more narrow because he has a bigger Head - not only because they are a bit more narrow...
Can you notice, in the final posedown... phil was posing but was looking for shawn, he was following shawn with his eyes, then phil goes to the right of the scenario while shawn was trying to go the left of the scenario, phil caughts him and grabs his arm like saying come with me... they go to the right of the scenario and they pose back, the thing is phil was trying to compare backs but at the same time watching the screen, why? because he thought if he had better back he would win the contest, so at that point phil was as insecured as a 4 year old kid in first day in elementary school.
That bubble-gut is Phil's achilles' heal right now. It really does compromise the aesthetics of any pose that you can see his abs. I doubt he will be able to reduce the gut anymore at this point especially after he had the hernia surgery already. I thought that Roelly was just as aesthetic as Phil, if not more because Roelly didn't have the gut messing up the poses.
I agree on the lat spread and ab&thigh but not the front double, a front double bicep isn't about the flow, it's about the lats and biceps and Rhoden with due respect had soft and smooth arms, Phil had a massive size and conditioning advantage over him, Shawn's quads did look good but Phil had a way more grainy look(hence, a lot better conditioning from the front) on a lot of poses like the front Double.

Shawn has better structure, like those classic bodybuilders: long legs, tiny waist, broad shoulders. The same reason why people love Arnold still with 1/4th muscle of today's bodybuilders. You can add muscle, but you cannot change structure.
That was logically delivered and not many would disagree with that analysis...but what would Phil say?

I think Phil’s quads, arms and back are way better then Shawn’s, Phil is definitely more muscular but his gut is bad. Shawn had a better physique, came in with way better conditioning won from the side, Shawn deserves to win, looks like a true champion, Phil’s struggling, he has the muscle to beat everyone but his gut and conditioning arnt Olympia worthy this year and same with like two other years

I agree with everything you said, minus the most muscular pose. I would still have to give that to Phil. Regardless of his gut sticking out a bit, every muscle pops out at you, whereas with Shawn I didn’t see that as much.
Hey, Nick! I question your reasoning on some of these. In the "side tricep" you say "even though Shawn looks incredibly elsewhere, Phils triceps blow him out of the water - and this is a side-tricep pose!" -- Then, with the front double biceps - where you could've applied the same reasoning, you say "Phils flow isn't as good / the midsection doesn't look good".
What's your thought on this? Front double bicep, is, after-all, a bicep-pose. And if you're too apply the logic you did on side-triceps, you should've have Phil winning that pose as well.
Phil has some serious anterior pelvic tilt going on with front double biceps...needs to adjust his stance and posture.

Phil and his wife are a good cop/bad cop routine.
There are a handful of reasons why Phil took second. One major reason was lack of conditioning and inability to hold poses. I feel like the judges saw this especially as the night show went on, he became to falter and breathe heavily. This made his waist expand alot and almost certainly ripped his incision and mesh. He had been taxing his body way to much. It would have been best if he took time off and recovered properly. He's still young. From the back he was unstoppable and had more detail than shawn. However, as the night went on this began to change as Shawn progressively began to get more rounded and harder. From the side it was close but Phil definitely had the edge. So in truth yes it was the abdominal control and Phil's breathing that messed him up. We haven't seen a lights out Phil Heath in a long time. But this goes to show anyone can be beaten in bodybuilding. With the Asian Grand Pre over, we basically got an idea of what's next for some of the other divisions. I'd say the door is wide open for 212 and classic. Men's physique still confuses me just as much as women's bikini. But that's how things go. I'm excited for the open. Nathan, Juan, Cedric and Brandon are only getting better. William certainly isn't far behind. Kai is as always a mystery but seeing him pose next to William, Cedric or even Ramy would be great. Roelly is chomping at the bit to win an Olympia. He just needs a smaller more conditioned waist. 2019 is going to be a good year for bodybuilding. Just saying it now because there's so many guys out there looking like future champions. And let's not forget Lionel Beyeke and Steve Kuclo. Two guys I feel can definitely take a bunch of pro shows once they dial in properly.

Well said nick. I think you needed to talk more about the shape of the shoulders/delts, although phill may have had larger delts, shawn had a better shape to his caps.

I hate Phil Heath he has no sportsmanship, he takes off his medal just after getting it, and has a f**ing bubble gut, It's normal that he didn't won this title this time, the judges let him won for a lot of times with this and now he's not happy because he didn't won, Shawn Roden give some aesthetics to bodybuilding, Phil Heath gave nothing apart from a baloon underneath his belly and ego to this sport. I hate Phil's open arm side chest. He displays his gut at its worst every time! The ONLY people that should do the open arm side chest should be people with 0 gut distension and good and to boot.

Phil looked VERY unhealthy up there. His huge gut spilling out and his labored breathing really detracted from all the poses. I absolutely believe he'd have won if he came in less pregnant and more athletic. There are many pics and vids that show Phil's body parts simply being BETTER, but also many shots where his posing looks like shit. In a lot of ways, this was a tortoise vs hare matchup.

Nick it doesn't really make sense to me how you say in the front double bicep that phil's arms are better but shawn still wins, then you say in the side tricep that phils triceps are better so he wins because its called the side tricep even though shawn looks better everywhere else. why doesnt the same rule apply to the bicep pose

OMG! Look at the Forearms @ 02:13 ...Doesn`t Phil have twice the size of forearms here? Same to the Chest! Only the Shoulderwith and the Abs have an advantage in this Pose.
And Phils shoulders also look more narrow because he has a bigger Head - not only because they are a bit more narrow...
Considering the overall body i would give side tricep pose to Shawn aswell.

Can you notice, in the final posedown... phil was posing but was looking for shawn, he was following shawn with his eyes, then phil goes to the right of the scenario while shawn was trying to go the left of the scenario, phil caughts him and grabs his arm like saying come with me... they go to the right of the scenario and they pose back, the thing is phil was trying to compare backs but at the same time watching the screen, why? because he thought if he had better back he would win the contest, so at that point phil was as insecured as a 4 year old kid in first day in elementary school.

That bubble-gut is Phil's achilles' heal right now. It really does compromise the aesthetics of any pose that you can see his abs. I doubt he will be able to reduce the gut anymore at this point especially after he had the hernia surgery already. I thought that Roelly was just as aesthetic as Phil, if not more because Roelly didn't have the gut messing up the poses.

Just my opinion, most muscular, side chest and legs Phil wins. His stomach did look terrible though, he was warned like everybody else.

I agree on the lat spread and ab&thigh but not the front double, a front double bicep isn't about the flow, it's about the lats and biceps and Rhoden with due respect had soft and smooth arms, Phil had a massive size and conditioning advantage over him, Shawn's quads did look good but Phil had a way more grainy look(hence, a lot better conditioning from the front) on a lot of poses like the front Double.
