    I had the great honour of meeting a former Meteor pilot last night. At 93 he’s still remarkably fit and well and treated me to several hours of riveting stories of his time in the aircraft. He spoke with passion and fondness of the jet. A great privilege for me indeed.

    For those wondering what this sound is, it is what aviation fans call a "blue note". It refers to a distinct whine or noise made by a disturbance in the airflow under some conditions. Like reaching A certain speed. A common misconception is it is the engine only. The Hunter has a blue note due to the GUN PORTS. A famous example is the Vulcan Bomber's howl. Although this is likely the engine here. Chris Cantrell helped me correct the original comment mistake. Please thank him.

    • @chriscantrell6983
      @chriscantrell6983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope. The blue note is caused by airflow of a certain speed passing over a disturbance in the aerodynamic flow, for example the Hawker Hunter sound coming from the gun ports, not the engine. You can create the same effect by blowing over the top of a glass British milk bottle. I believe that the Vulcan howl was caused by the engines and thus I suppose not a blue note in the same way, would love someone with knowledge to explain that awesome Vulcan howl.

      The straight wing Me 262 was not a good design, the wings had to be slightly swept to improve the balance, not for any aerodynamic reason, the German jet engines were poorly designed and went no where.

      @@barrierodliffe4155 That is a bald faced lie! This false urban myth comes from a single highly dubious source and completely contradicts all the historical evidence.
      No version of the _Projekt 1065_ eas ever made straight wings, the Me-262 was designed from inception to have swept wings,
      In fact, it's the first aircraft to have all swept control surfaces and a fly-by-wire Horizontal Stabilator system to counteract the effects of compressiblity and Mach tuck.
      The Messerschmitt Me-262 was designed from data and testing conducted by Adolf Busemann at the RLMs _Luftfahrtforschungsanstalt_ supersonic wind tunnel laboratories in Brauschweig Germany.
      The Me-262 has the highest critical Mach number performance of any WW2 aircraft.
      Please stop posting lies and ignorant misinformation about a topic that you are completely unqualified to discuss intelligently.

      @@barrierodliffe4155 MYTH BUSTED! The Messerschmitt Me-262 was flown in configurations with 1,2 and even 3 engines, 11 different engine types from 7 different manufacturers WITH NO CHANGE in wing sweep angle.
      The Me-262 has its engines mounted underneath the wings in pods and CoG can be easily adjusted by shifting the engine mounts fore and aft.

      @@WilhelmKarsten Hello Sandyboy, as you know your dataless and evidenceless waffling proves nothing as you provide no results. As for the idea that the CoG could be easily adjusted by shifting the engine mounts fore and aft it fails to consider issues of wing structure.

      @@WilhelmKarsten Hello Sandyboy, as you know the Gloster Meteor was a very successful aircraft having a service career of over thirty years and serving with more than a dozen air forces. Now, what other WW2 jet can you say that of except the De Havilland Vampire. As you know, the Me 262 by comparison had a services career of barely seven years and post war absolutely nobody wanted it.
      As for crash rates, as you know the Meteor's was lower than that of the Me 262 (mostly on account of the Me 262's crappy engines) and that of the F104 in German service . Adolf Galland a famous German fighter ace of WW2 who piloted both the Me 262 and the Gloster Meteor, described the Meteor as a fine aircraft and declared his preference for the Meteor's engines over those on the Me 262.

      Don’t forget the fact that Martin baker still operates two meteors that are still used to test ejector seats to this day, so given the right pilots and care the meteor is definitely not a bad machine. Regardless of the meteors shortcomings it has earned its place in aviation history alongside all the other early jets and whilst it may not be the best, so many of its contemporaries had similar vices that are often ignored by those who blindly worship them.
