There’s no way in hell all my films are available in one place online. 1.. The Chinese will pick up the slack for UHD players. As we are seeing in the 4K TV space, TCL and Hisense are making an Impact. Korean and Japanese brands have competition.
2.. Today is a snowy day in NJ so it seems a lot of people are home and are apparently on the internet streaming because my bandwidth has tanked. Shows that are 4K on Netflix are streaming as 1080p.

@mrbrainchild76 if you download games and the publisher loses the rights to those games then technically you lose the right to play that game too. You only buy the right to play games when you buy digital games.
For example, Activision and Beenox lost the rights to Spider-Man games.
This means if you bought games like the Amazing Spider-Man 2 digitally then you can't play them anymore unless you still have it downloaded on your hard drive. You can no longer buy it digitally and if you delete it from your hard drive you cant download it anymore.
Another great example is the PT demo. It was removed from PSN by Konami and can no longer be played unless you have it installed on your PS4. PS4's that have this demo installed go for amazingly high prices online.
This is why physical media is amazing and still superior for games, just like the point brought up in this video, you own the disc, you own the game.
Sure, nowadays many games come with updates that must be downloaded digitally so if services go down your disc game may be "incomplete", but it's better than having no game at all.
If you want to invest in digital games make sure you have a hard drive with a LOT of space that can store all of them, you never know when a publisher might go down and you dont have the digital game you got from them downloaded so you lose it for eternity.

    • @eurosensazion

Exactly. Pretty dumb and lazy to buy digital when you can lose it in years or something happens. You got them all with physical. And sometimes I get better deals on the movie disk then paying for the digital. So you got like 2-3 back-ups plus disk is better quality no matter what people say. I've tested it on 3 new tv's I bought for house Sony X900F, Samsung Q8FN. I even bought 4K Infinity War in Digital to test while buying the 4K disk. The blu-ray was identical if not slightly better and the 4K destroyed the 4K download.

Gerald Dyas While physical 4k Blu-ray’s are undoubtedly better, saying that the streaming version is “nowhere near” as good is just ignorant. The data consumption of said 4k streams say otherwise.
As for music, also ignorant. I have a 2 Rockford Fosgate Amplifiers in my car with one 500 watt amp going to my rear 6x9’s, door 6.5” and door tweeters and the other amp is pushing 1,500 watts to 2 12” Sundown Audio SA12’s in a sealed box in the trunk of my 2014 Camaro SS.
Let me assure you that Apple Music sounds absolutely amazing when either streaming or playing downloaded music on the 2,000 watt stereo and plenty of other people’s hat I don’t know agree when they told me they can’t believe how clean my system sounds.

Long live Physical Media! Ugh, I hate that everything is going digital. I've had several of my mp3 albums that I purchased on Amazon no longer show up on my digital purchases. Luckily I downloaded them and saved them to a hard drive. But they would be gone forever and I'd have to repurchase them. With digital movies I don't believe you even have the option to download them and save them to a hard drive. And your correct, with Blu-ray you get the best picture and you don't have to worry about bandwidth dips. Another thing to mention is internet prices continue to rise and in order to watch movies in 4k/1080p you need to have a higher tier plan. With physical media you don't need the internet to watch.

Yeah, physical media is the way to go. Everything you said is 100% true! Way higher quality in video and audio, special features plus you own your discs.
It's sad how many people trust that large corporations won't screw them over. These people either don't remember or don't know about Netflix trying to gouge their customers back in 2009 by doubling their rates over night, simply, because they could. They only back paddled when 2/3 of their customers canceled their service.

Because any studio can have a falling out with Apple, Netflix etc and pull all their content from that service and you're stuck not being able to watch your purchased content. A very similar situation happened to myself on Steam. I couldn't play a game I purchased because the studio pulled it from the service! The biggest issue why I buy my physical movie disc is because I want to watch movies when I want to. What I mean is that streaming services will often have movie expiration dates. "This movie is only available to watch for the next month." How many times have you logged on to your favorite streaming service, looking for one of your favorite movies, only to realize that it's gone...expired? Hulu, HBO, Starz, Cinemax, even Netflix will often remove old content.

@@ryans413 You are correct about making copies, but I just checked Legal Zoom. According to them, a copywrited movie (even if you purchased the disc) cannot be played in public. In private, yes, like your home during a party, is legal, but outside, or at a large public gathering, is illegal.
Many years ago when I worked at a major bookstore and the newest Harry Potter book was coming out, we thought it would be a great idea to play the first Harry Potter movie on our store's big screen. We were forbidden by Corporate because of the copywrite public showing law. We couldn't even play the Harry Potter theme song. All this, even though both DVD and CD were privately owned by an employee.

UHD players may be relatively expensive, but Blu-Ray players are very affordable, and the difference in picture quality going from Blu-Ray to UHD is negligible to imperceptible unless you have a very big TV and you sit very close to it. I have a 65" 4k TV and sit about 9' away, and though there is a perceptible difference between 4k and 1080p, it's a small difference, and only there in A/B comparisons. Additionally, as the Hobbyist alludes to, streaming sources are more highly compressed than physical media, which results, in my experience, in 1080p Blu-Ray looking better in most cases than a 4k stream.
And if you have any modern game console, you already have a Blu-Ray player.
As for cost, if you don't want pay the premium for buying new Blu-Rays or UHD discs, there are rental options available. Netflix is still relatively cheap and has a huge selection. Redbox is convenient, but has poor selection and higher prices. I have a Family Video store near enough that renting locally is convenient for me as well. And if you do buy new discs, there are ways to mitigate the cost. A UHD package generally comes with two discs, UHD and Blue-Ray, or if you buy Blu-Ray, it often comes with an additional DVD, and in both cases you usually get a digital download code. When I buy a UHD package, I can generally get a significant portion of the purchase price back by selling the second disc and the download codes online. The above mentioned Family Video rental chain is based on this economic model - they buy commercially packaged discs, split the contents and rent them separately and sell the download code, then sell the extra discs at a big discount after the "new release" window has passed.

Keep in mind that Netflix 4K uses the newer, more efficient codec that is HEVC (aka H.265). For any given quality level, it only needs about half the bitrate that H.264 (used by regular Blurays) needs. So it's not as simple as higher bitrate = better. You have to consider other factors like the codec (as well other video encoding settings that you can learn about on the Handbrake wiki).

alvallac21 Yes but still comes down too internet speed frame drops compression Netflix uses. Netflix content is really compressed so it can be loaded and streamed smoothly across anyone’s setup. Blu Ray is still compressed as well but not as much and if you factor in that a Blu Ray disc will play how it’s presented 100% of the time where a movie on Netflix will suffer from dropped frames compression and people connection speeds. It’s no where near the quality of a disc he’ll no where near the quality of a 4K disc

Maybe a video on CD's and that they sound better than digital files cause they're not compressed. Another good reason is that you can turn CD's into digital files and alway have the back up. Another reason for physical discs is if the internet is down you can't stream, but can put your physical disc in your player and watch without the internet. Lastly, I can go over alot more movies on a shelf then using a remote to go through each title. Again, great video!

I agree with what HTH has said, I like my DVDs, like a book something you can hold and own, a nice cover, you open the dvd there is a sleeve or booklet with programme and episode notes, very useful, especially with older classic films and tv shows.
Ive had my Samsung Blu-ray Disc player 17 months and connected to my UHD/HDR tv the dvd picture is superb, the player also upscales a Standard Definition dvd disc.
Ive noticed more films being newly remastered in HD from the original negatives and proper aspect ratio, specifically for the dvd/blu-ray market, colour & b/w, so there is still a good dvd/blu-ray market for enthusiasts.

Absolutely agree. And there are many other reasons too. I can't speak for anyone else, but I think the end credits can be very important. You have a piece of music that helps you digest what you've just seen, and reflect on the current state of the story. But all too often, you get an ad, or it just skips to the next episode destroying any feeling you have. This goes for television too.
Not to mention the fact that if you even slightly move the mouse, you get on screen graphics that get in the way of your viewing. Amazon is the absolute worst for this when they plaster the centre viewing screen with a massive play button and darken the entire thing.
I also like the idea of physical media. Blu-ray is the ultimate physical format for a digital archive. Take the recent releases of the classic Doctor Who series for example. The shows have literally never looked sharper, commentaries, and production subtitles on every episode, clips from contemporary television shows that featured Doctor Who, PDFs of scripts, annuals, TV listings, production designs and loads more. And all packaged in a gorgeous box that you can display proudly on your shelf as a memento for one of your favourite shows. Netflix simply cannot compare to that.

One note for completists - you won’t get _all_ the features because the market, instead of increasing the value proposition, spreads the content out over different purchase options. So some will have 3D, some will have 4K, some uncut versions are only on some formats, and some featurettes are exclusive to certain retailers.
Very silly for the market to do this for a dying medium. They should be providing the most _complete_ package possible given the competition on price and convenience from streaming.

I’d like to add something else: buying your favorite movies supports the studio more. When you pay $20 for a digital copy of a movie, only a portion of the money goes to the studio, but if you buy a $20 DVD almost all of the sales go to the studio, so if there’s a movie you really like then buying the disc will help support them more than streaming will.
For example, right now the movie Alita: Battle Angel is one of my favorites, but might not get a sequel if it doesn’t make around $20-50 million more, but if it does good on BlueRay and DVD sales, it’s much more likely to get a sequel. Obviously this doesn’t apply as much to massive studios like Disney, but if there’s any indie films or smaller budgeted movies that you enjoy, buying the disc is always better for the studio than streaming, but streaming is better than nothing.

The quality of streaming anything is poor in relation to the physical product even music, it's all compressed. I have yet to see any film on Netflix and Amazon Prime match the quality of 1080P HD never mind 4K. I only had Netflix for a month to which was free and after that month there was no way I was gonna pay to continue having it's service. I do have Amazon Prime but the only reason I have that is to save on postage and get things quicker. I can watch films for free on Amazon Prime Video with my subscription but very rarely bother watching it. It's pretty much very poor and I prefer the disc every time. The rights to the disc is a big one for me. I’ve always been big on being able to “hold” what I buy, including movies and games. If I lose internet, I got the disc. Also, I read about an incident someone posted on the Blu-ray forum a while back. Not 100%, but he moved from Australia to Canada IIRC. He opened his iTunes up to watch a movie, but couldn’t. Turned out that particular distributor didn’t have the rights for Canada, so it blocked him from viewing it.
Also, you mentioned extras. Another thing is languages. My mother in-law doesn’t speak English and I have my Vudu account on their tv so the kids can watch movies. Unlike the discs, you can’t put on other languages. I don’t understand how digital movies cost the same, but give you less features. They’re getting better about adding extras (on newer releases), but don’t give the spoken language options that discs offer.
My final reason: I just love the look of my shelf with all my movies on it. I love seeing them on there, going through them like a library, and picking them off. Just so badass to me. Haven’t got a 4K player yet, but I’m looking into it. I like the convenience of digital, but I’ll never use it exclusively.

Preach. Laziness of not getting up to open a disc and inserting the disc. After streaming 4K for a month, I put a 4K disc in my Oppo and was blown away by the great quality and huge difference in the picture. Cheap key codes will continue to impact physical media. There will be challenges moving forward for physical media. I agree with you and hope it survives.

I’m a physical media collector and will always support Blu-Ray, DVD, and CD. Agree with your video especially on those extras and ownership. Samsung I heard has decided to stop making Blu-Ray discs, leaving Sony as the largest producer of discs. The video that I heard this on also predicts the death of physical media in 5 years. God I hope not. I have a region free Blu-Ray player and buy discs of all types from U.S. distributors, but also things I can’t find except from the UK or Japan. It’s totally worth supporting physical media and let’s hope it stays around for years to come!

They predicted the death of vinyl records. Didn't happened, did it. Samsung made a very poor player without Dolby Vision support, which sold very badly as a consequence. Anyone who blames the market as a whole for Samsung's retreat, swallowing their excuses, never saw how bad that hardware was!

I am still upset that 3D blu ray is gone in the U.S. I have to order from Europe now to get 3D, I am going to be really mad if Blu ray and 4k go away too!

    • @danielrhodes7594
      @danielrhodes7594 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh, I understand that they will eventually go to 8k. I will then order from Europe for 4k, but I just want to still have a hard copy of my movies, not all only streaming! I still have my 3D TV and DVD player in one room and my 4k in another. I don't really plan on buying the 8k, at least not until it has been around for a while.

@13randon 13axter that is the reason .. until certain final versions exist permanently we can use torrent happyliy and later throw the harddisk away and buy each and every final high quality versions one day. hope it doesnt come when become old.

and now when i see the blu rays disc colecters on youtube they look dumbfor buying those many blurays and now they start buying 4k versions for the same movies lol. when 8k comes they will again repeat the same process. pitty on them

I still get reg dvd, unless i by chance get a movie that is blu ray-dvd-digital copy then i may try get the movie if want real bad that i can watch it in any format. it will be my first blu ray and more formats since i only get dvd for now. some people want the highest quality video possible and i know blu ray is just a bit more polished so to speak in details if u feel need to see everything so sharp i guess as a person posted a dvd and br picture from one movie years back. i wont waste rebuy same movie if i got a player that can play what i got. if u happy with a certain format then why waste bank on br and higher if u not need it right away. just do best u can with what u got, and be happy u can still watch it till feel a need to get any newer later.

I'm a physical media junkie. Games, records, laserdiscs and now I'm in love with blu ray steelbooks. 4K discs at least have the slips so I like that but apparently Amazon doesn't do slip covers dang it. Commentary has gotten a lot better. Director and star not the lightning guy and stand in anymore. Its about the art, instructions, better quality, whatever the reason I think it's best to have something rather than stuff floating in a cloud.

Dude thank you so much for that!!!! I’ve been saying this for years but people just don’t want to listen!!! Only people like you, me, and the people in the TH-cam community that upload collection videos know what we’re really talking about! They complain about physical media being expensive but that’s bull!!! I still pay $40 for some of my titles still! Not because I have to but because I choose to! If I see something I like and happen to be in Barnes and Noble or wherever, I buy it! It’s that simple. I work, I play. This is the only hobby that I have had my entire teen and adult life and I won’t let being a cheap skate penny pincher stop me from getting the movies I want my favorite format! I make no apologies about that whatsoever. All this talk about space and cost of discs and yet we’ve been doing the same thing now across 5 formats since the 80’s! People have just gotten so cheap and lazy that it’s ridiculous. I had a guy tell me during the dvd format wars that I should get a player with divix because he was too lazy to take a rental back to the store. Unbelievable!!!! That’s the kind of people that are killing physical media, the lazy asses that don’t want to get off the couch to change out a disc. It’s pathetic! Well anyway, to hell with them! That just means more discs and slipcovers for me! I’ll collect until they press their last disc. I still buy dvd, Blu-ray, and 4K Blu Ray. Thanks again dude! Keep the physical media flag flying!!!

I have over 300 DVDs and Blu-rays, what am I going to do with them? I don't want stuff on my computer, I don't want stuff out there in the cloud that I can grasp I want to be able to, on any whim, pop in a disc and enjoy

  • @jsc315

While I agree with every point made and really even appreciate the technical aspect as well. The prices for UHD and 4K discs are just way to expensive. Usually I buy most of my digital media on VUDU as they often have really good sales and often have extra content including commentary and all the extras making it a lot easier. Still all your points are valid.
The thing with steaming even if you have the bandwidth is that's it's honestly good enough and really most people likely won't even be able to tell the difference unless they have a proper setup.

    • @rosstee
      @rosstee 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah streaming quality is fine for most people, but apart from discs offering the very best picture and sound quality the other biggest benefit of physical media for me is availability. As a film fan if I hear about a great title I want to watch then a physical disc is the best way, because not only are there thousands of great movies not currently available on any streaming/download service, even those that are available often disappear again after a short time. Not a problem when you have the blu-ray, and they’re not that expensive. Due to the bit-rate even a 1080p blu-ray can often look as good as or better than a 4K stream, and after a few months you can get great deals on discs, they’re only expensive for a short time after release.

    • @rosstee

@13randon 13axter Nah, if everyone did that there would soon be no new discs for people to rip/torrent.

@13randon 13axter I've done that which was nice but the problem is the file size for one 4k Blu-ray is like 50gbs so kinda kills it for me since micro sd card storage is still very expensive and external HDD harddrives break easy

  • @busywl69

Discs are THE best. Just make sure they are true 4k movies filmed in 3k or higher and not 2k upscalers. Sooooo many of them are 2k, which is not 4 times the resolution of 1080p blu ray.

My (UK) Sky internet/video drops out every time the phone rings or a high wind moves the tree in the path of the satellite and you can't rely on it being fast enough for Bluray or 4K at anytime. I buy all my music on CD and all my films/video on DVD/Bluray or possibly, at the price of it, in future, 4K discs. I can keep them all for ever, use them all and take them anywhere (new home, mates home, holiday in Spain, Croatia) - whatever!

I've stuck with them for the blu ray and 4K players becasue they play PAL discs for some reason. I have a lot of region ABC discs that are PAL encoded but only Samsung player play(like German imports of The Burrower, The Last Lovecraft and Wolf Creek, all on blu ray, for example).

Agree. Horrible build quality, the world's worst ever remote control, a noisy fan and no Dolby Vision - those were the reasons for their poor sales, but Samsung prefer to blame everyone else.

I prefer physical products any day of the week, because you're in control of it you own it and it's yours, say if any of these streaming companies go bust or go offline you've lost all your content and cant watch it, it's always best to be in control what you own!
