Remember watching this game with my dad (BC'69). Unfortunately, he passed away, so we cannot share this together again. I was so sad when Alabama scored at the beginning of the third quarter, but he told me to have faith -- the Eagles would achieve the victory!

Hi Kim,my dad was the same way. Seems like that intuition is from a higher source of knowledge to have faith like that.. now I always think about the " cloud of witnesses " that the book of Hebrews talks about in the Bible..up there cheering us on..look it up..God is good and so was this game..

Alabama went 5-6, first losing season since 1957 (aka 1 B.B.--Before Bear)

The loss of Kerry Goode took the wind out of our sails that year. A 5-6 season.

Make sure you read Dan Rubin’s comments on the BC website-he is terrific

I was at this game sitting in one of the end zones. If Kerry Goode hadn't have gotten hurt, Alabama could have finished the regular season at 9-2. At RB we had a great one-two punch with Kerry Goode and Ricky Moore but with Kerry's injury opposing defenses keyed on Ricky and I will also mention that we were inexperienced at QB. Mike Shula was a sophomore that season and Vince Sutton was a true freshman.

Week 1 of the new CFA. The Power 5 conferences banding together to have the major matchups on ABC. If you didn't have cable on 9/8/1984 in the Boston area, you still got a full day's worth of games. Earlier in the day, Channel 5 exited the ABC Saturday Morning Sched. an hour early to debut the Metromedia/Katz Sports Game Of The Week: Syracuse vs Maryland (sadly not on YT) If you could pick up that new Channel 21 out of Concord, NH; at the last minute, they added a new Pac-10 Game Of The Week to their schedule, so the middle game was Northwestern vs Washington. The, back to Channel 5 with BC Football to end the night!

Butch Shomph, 1984 was the year that changed the College Football TV landscape as we know it with ESPN showing live College Football games including in primetime, plus you add in some syndicated TV packages. Now in 2020, there's Big Ten/SEC/ACC/Pac-12/Big 12 Networks, NBC Sports Network, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, add in NBC-Notre Dame, CBS, ABC, Fox, FS1, plus syndicated TV packages.

Alabama can say what they want about BC, but BC has a winning record against them all-time.

Bama fan here: Was only seven years old this year. Did Boston College have the option to play BYU in 1984 in the Holiday Bowl? I know that the Cotton Bowl was a better payout, but it seems that this BC team would have hammered BYU, and might have won the National Championship.

I'm not sure if BC was offered a slot in the Holiday Bowl, but I do know that the team that finished second in the polls that year, Washington, declined the Holiday Bowl for the bigger payout of the Orange Bowl. Besides at the time the bowl matchups were made BC was maybe number 10 in the polls due to a November loss to Penn State

Also, is John Bosa, #97, related to the Bosa brothers, who played at Ohio State and both wore #97 too?

That's their father. His wife is the sister of former OSU LB Eric Kumerow, Bosa's teammate with the Dolphins.
