    I bought a pair of leather gauntlets at a byzantine fair one year . And have worn them during some of my carving processes, as well as when I'm using the chainsaw for long periods. Really was worth the purchase, holds together and in place better than your bandana ... however the use of is pretty flippin smart ! Wise wrist saver !

    Just discovered this channel a couple days ago and just had to say how incredibly impressed I am with the level of detail shown! Your interview skills are just as awesome too. You never talk over your guests like a lot of people tend to do. It seems like most hosts or interviewers seem more interested in showing the audience how much they know or how smart they are. You let your guest show and talk up his craft and it’s really quite refreshing. Love the channel!

    Excellent presentation Chris. You provide the essential details to avoid mistakes. Wow,wish someone would make that pattern of auger now. You don't need the spur wings that cut the wood on the screw side. Old large augers in the states are often designed for softwoods, you can tell by the lead screw which has a faster pitch. Made the mistake 20+ years ago with an old rusty auger I found in a shed.

    • @OnedayWoodcraft
      @OnedayWoodcraft 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Lewis, most appreciated. Yes, that is a superb tool compared to the spurred patterns. Good tip on the lead screw, I will watch for that.

    Zed, you are covering the carving world.
    Your carving knife videos were excellent, and I've truly enjoyed and learned. I'm a hobbyist Blacksmith and saw lots of great advice. I got myself a deep fryer for the heat treatment process and got the Parks 50 oil that is preferred by Blade Smiths .High hopes for an improved heat treatment
    I'm testing the 01 and 1095 steel, perhaps a few others .
    I'm checking this out. I definitely want to make a few spoons at one point.
    Thanks

    Wow that was brilliant, thank you guys for taking the time to put this together - it's really good. Just on the oak base. Another option if you want to avoid sanding machines (and there are many options) is a flat bottomed spokeshave rather than using your mora knife. As you have a vice handy you could very easily refine the shape. Dry oak can be tough going alright. Thanks again.

    As someone who does 18th Century living history, I'm excited to use some of the techniques used here to make a rundlet, a small wooden container used water/rum, made out of a green branch and closed at both ends much like done here. Also Thank you Zed and Chris for going into so much detail. I am very much tired of the "how to" videos that last ten to fifteen minutes hardly explaining anything.

      Hi
      When u scribe the bottom pc
      Why don’t u scribe the top pc of wood that your going to be using ?
      I think it would be a better guide ...
      I realize it’s going to shrink .
      Instead of the guess work with the transfer paper ....
      Or am I all wet ??? Lmao

      So after a lot of searching, I only found augers of that type on Ebay, and it was either in good condition and expensive, or rusted to oblivion and cheap. In the end I choosed to buy large bits for my elecrtical drill. A bummer, but it works too.

  • @DDan61
    @DDan61 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well done! I also carve and make stuff and this I will definitely attempt as I have all the tools Chris used except for the auger. But, I do have a old style hand drill that I am sure I can buy some drill bits for. Thanks for the nice lesson!

    Hey great - so beautiful & natural too. Do you think I could make some small cheese moulds from such a shrink pot by drilling a few holes and making a loose fitting lid to press down on to? I wouldn't use Oake due to tannin taint...

      Zed Outdoors Its very in-depth, I really enjoyed it. Chris may have mentioned and I missed it - but, is the bark left on purely for decorative purposes, or does it help prevent the wood cracking during the drying process?

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's entirely decorative, if you check out a UK maker 'John Mullaney' he's a shrink pot making pro and all of his are without the bark ~Peace~

    YaY, finally nobody i subscribed to posted a video i wanted to watch, almost started some primitive building asian video when i remembered there were also some long Zed Docu's still unseen ... so i got my hot choco and a nice cookie, sat down and dug in ... well worth the watch i think, sure it's 'again' a long one, and thus a lot to take in, but i think i got everything and if not, well it's here for eternity (or until an EMP solar flare event wipes the internet) ... Tnx a lot for sharing, unfortunately i'm not on social media, but Cudo's to Chris and hopefully a like here will have more people see it and they may be on social media... I do really like these, but due to the timestamp on them it's taken me a while to find the time to actually watch. Not sure what to do about it really, a lot of value here if you want to learn how to do this, not really much that can be cut out, so yeah ... keep it up, share our passion and i hope you have a lovely day as well ~peace~

    These are amazing, are they airtight when finished with the lid? Is there any reasons you favour birch?

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are not completely airtight when finished, but they are a relatively snug fit. Birch is a general all round good wood to carve with as it's soft compared to harder woods, that being said you can use other species of wood too for this kind of project ~Peace~
