A good striker who is hard to takedown is pretty dangerous.

From a self defense perspective, but on the mat? Before trying to grapple in a real self defense situation keep in mind, grappling works well only if you stay within your own weight class or below. There are videos of really big guys being beaten by much smaller guys. This is a noteworthy feat but it only happens that way because they're in the ring or on the mat, with rules, and there's no real sense of urgency. Combat sport's is not self defense. A violent situation in real life doesn't last long, there's no rounds, and striking is far more real than people are wanting to admit. Once somebody begins to hockey punch you it's extremely difficult to get your senses enough to defend yourself. Punches can come in hard and fast, and don't need to be pretty to be effective. If you're close enough to take somebody down, you're close enough for a striker to light you up. There's value in both grappling and striking, neither should take precedence over the other, and neither should be dismissed as ineffective

my father who was college wrestling champion, said basically the same thing, that the only way a boxer could beat a wrestler is to stay away & strike from out of range.

Great advice, but two problems: Connor's pride and Khabib's conditioning. Connor was not about to be booed in such a high profile fight, and Khabib was not going to be gassed by a spry McGregor. I think it's one of those fights that are doomed from the start because of both ego and a stylistic disadvantage.

I think everyone would agree you need to be proficient at both. Yes that takes a lot of work but martial arts is a journey! Keep learning!

In terms of fighting striking is my jam, and my favourite martial art is boxing. But I agree with everything that Jocko said: Pure striker vs pure grappler = grappler has the advantage; striking vs grappling in self defense = grappling has more benefits. The thing is, biomechanically and in terms of physics, striking has much more prequisites in order to be effective than grappling:

The early UFC's in the early 1990's were a wake up call for strikers, especially when Royce Gracie served up portion after portion of Humble Pie to us. I grew up in striking, 25 years of Okinawan karate when the first UFCs were held. We thought that our strikes were magic death rays that would keep a grappler from ever getting their hands on us. Those early matches woke us up and caused alot of soul searching. It took me a while but on the week of my 60th birthday I started BJJ training because the hole in my training bothered me. I continued to train for 3 years until a serious hand injury made me hang it up.

Excellent discussion. I knew Khabib would win 9/10 times against Conor because it’s much harder to keep the distance Conor would need to keep & much easier for Khabib to close the distance at some point. But once or twice out of 10 Conor might catch Khabib good coming in...anyway, love your analysis.

Very accurate and on point. It also points out that one can’t do much is Maurice Smith did as a non-grappler and just learn strategies to not be taken down. Once that is accomplished one can add additional grappling skills. However, first and foremost us to stay on the feet as the old saying goes two Beats one on the ground so the ability to defend on foot is paramount.
