A lack of HDMI wasnt the problem; it was the lack of 1080 resolution. The Wii already had Component Video Cables that could support 1080, but the Wii just wasn't built to process that high of a resolution. Now, I don't know if those cables could support 1080p or not, but they definitely support 1080i, which is the same resolution, but with twice the frame rate.
@@everygamersdream72 True. And I think they were still selling 720p and 1080i TVs at the time. But 480p was seen as unacceptable. Especially...when distorted by a 720 or 1080 screen...
I remember being 12 years old and learning about the component cable for Wii and how it gave better picture quality. My dad told me I couldn't buy one but eventually I did anyways. And I was so excited on the way home about playing Wii with a real crisp HD resolution on the 50" plasma tv we had in the basement. I get home, plug it in and boot it up and… it looks like shit! I could not tell any difference in picture quality, even swapping back and forth in the settings. I thought there was something wrong with the cable but later figured out that it was still only 480p and that this is not HD. I felt scammed. I paid like $20 for that thing and I was 12!
@@mronewheeler Oof... But it's still nice to have. It allows for double the frame rate at least, and a more stable image, cleaner image. But the biggest upgrade would simply be...downgarding to a 480 TV, sadly. I don't get why they chose 720 and 1080 over the more obvious 960.
Thing is, Nintendo saw asymmetrical multi-player as being the next bug thing. And while it certainly is popular now... it never was enough to build a system around. And back then it was even more anemic.
If for nothing else, I'll always appreciate the Wii U for giving my wife and I hundreds of hours of entertainment with Hyrule Warriors. That game took so long to fully complete all of the adventure mode maps, and my wife and I always enjoyed relaxing after working all day to just play for an hour or two before bed. My wife has some vision problems, so she actually greatly enjoyed having a whole screen to herself, so playing on the Switch was never quite the same for us, unfortunately (though we *did* try). It's a shame my Wii U doesn't work anymore because I didn't turn it on enough. It gives some kind of disc reader error, even without a disc in the drive, which means some filter on the board went bad. I should find a repair shop to fix it so we can relive 10 years ago, lol.
Positives: Wii U has a wonderful GUI, it’s backwards compatible with Wii and had some incredible 1st party games. It’s eShop was well thought and easy to navigate, search and had offerings from NES, SNES, GBA, DS, N64, Wii and many indie games and eShop exclusives found nowhere else. Additionally you could transfer your Wii Virtual Console games to the Wii U allowing you to play games from more consoles and handhelds than any other console without modding. It was a commercial failure, yes mostly due to Nintendo’s inability to market it properly but the Wii U was a great piece of hardware
Nintendo advertising isn't great in Australia. I didn't even know the Wii U existed until after the Switch came out. Admittedly, I'm a Playstation guy, but still, you'd think they'd try to get the word out.
Remember how Nintendo TV was abandoned after what seemed like only just a few short months? But hey! I still use my gamepad as a TV remote! In all seriousness though, I still use my Wii U more than my Switch especially since I hacked it.
I dont think so, having the word "Wii" hurts the marketting of the Wii U, since the Wii had a lot of accessories always having the word "Wii" as the first word, so it caused a lot of confusion.
@@ToonyTails Something like "Nintendo Feel", the Wii already had a LOT of accessories, so putting the meaning Wii in it would make people think it's another Wii accessory, the meaning "Wii U" does make a lot of sense if you think about it, but otherwise, it's a such stupid name that Nintendo are becoming like Microsoft giving the Xbox consoles dumb names. The fact that Wii remotes were compatible with the Wii U demonstrates that the Wii U is basically just a Wii with a gamepad, Nintendo didn't even bother to change the Wii remote design a bit to make it look more like a brand new console. The Wii U definetely isn't a bad console, but it fails to be the Wii's successor in many aspects.
I followed gaming news everyday back then and even I wasn't sure if WiiU was a new controller for the Wii because I never saw the system. I was confused even after I found out it was a new console for the first time, a whole year before Sony or Microsoft announced theres. I think most casual people must have thought the same thing. I can't wait to see how they handle the Switch successor.
I feel Deja vu with the naming of the Switch 2 Switch 2... makes sense Switch 4K... makes sense So history tells us Nintendo will go with the name Switch U 🤣
Nintendo learned an important lesson with the wiiu. It doesn't matter what your console looks like, if you crank out tons of new games of classic Nintendo ips and re-release the older stuff regularly, it will sell. They didn't do that enough with the wiiu.
Well, glad I have my (albeit Hybrid/mixed race) Wii U, a WHITE 16gb base unit and BLACK GamePad hacked and a boat load of nes, gb/gbc, snes, gba, n64, GameCube and Wii games… the machine that does it ALL. Well, except Switch 😊
They would've been better off calling the wii u the super wii or wii advance. Yeah it might've been confusing as well, but at least it would've sounded cool lol
15:57 two annual sports games, a gimped AAA title, and the worst Need for Speed. And the first games we got from EA after seven years were the worst Plants Versus Zombies and freaking Apex Legends. EA sucks.

This man is single-handedly keeping the Wii U in people's long-term memory.
Wii U pitch meeting:
"What if we just tape *3* gamecubes together?"
"Brilliant!"
Behold, Switch! **Nintendo grins** FOUR GaneCubes duct taped together!
Honestly this might be the best summary on YT on the road to the Wii U and how it was kind of bound to fail
Wow, I can’t believe Scott talked about the last year of the WiiU
Humble beginnings before a bitter end
i sure do love scotts snippets
scotts sometimes snippets you mean

I dunno, even by 2012 I remember plugging the Wii into newer TVs was becoming a pain.
crazy how ive grown up watching scott
I remember seeing rumors that the Wii 2 would be able to install games off Steam
(Nintendo Lawyers loudly laugh in unison)
if only, then the wii 2 could play Super Lesbian Animal RPG.
theyd make alot of money from extra sales and if they get a cut of the profits
If anyone believed it at the time, they were very fucking stupid
The SteamDeck? lmao
Kinda crazy how this “snippet” is literally around the same length as some regular episodes.

This is not a snippet
As is tradition
No it's a segment
Relative to the LOTR directors cut trilogy, this is a snippet.
read the description of the channel, compilation and specific segments are fair game
it's also not a snappet.
The Wii U was bad ass, I loved it more than the Wii. Yes it was missing SOME games but the WiiU had lots of great games.
Completely under appreciated
The road to launch was crazy!
POV: You're just watching a regular Scott the Woz episode
"Super Wii" still makes me laugh, ha ha.
Now people are here throwing the name “Super Switch” all around the place. Old trends die hard I guess.
Nice of scott to post a video so soon after getting us the bronze on pummel horse
This just in….wtf? 😂😂😂😂 I literally laughed out loud
33:44 should have made the tag "are you a gamer? Wii got U"
Wii U's failure gave us the Switch. That's all i can take. I love my Wii U, heck Fatal Frame with the camera was designed for it.
Fun Fact: in 2011 Ford Brought To us The Ultimate Powertrain upgrade the all the New 5.0 Coyote 2011 was a great year .

i wonder how many more consoles they would've sold if they simply called it 'Wii 2'

Wii U part 3 foreshadowing?
That name, though. I'd love to meet the minds behind it.
Is Scott pulling a Valve by not releasing part 3?
