    Mr. Lewis commented that This fight was actually supposed to be an exhibition only, so he started out going easy, and also that they were instructed to keep the fight going to make the most out of the investment they had made in televising the fight. But then Wally tried a full power front kick that Joe felt wasn't 'exhibition' at all, so Joe started fighting seriously and pummels Wally from then on.
    Years later Mr. Slocki reported that he had fought Lewis to a draw in this fight, which Joe disagreed with. Joe knocked him down with a knee strike. Early Kickboxing bouts had little in the way of rules and even then they were vague. For example Joe fought his first match with sneakers, other times elbow blows were allowed so they wore elbow pads, etc, which is why the knee strike was allowed, if controversial.

      Hahahahaha...that wasn't a draw. That was a beating. The guy was tough though and later on did very well in full contact karate as it was sometimes called. He had a really good match against Jeff Smith which he lost by a close decision. Some of the 1970's tournaments had full contact matches across weight divisions, and Slocki gave a much smaller opponent a severe thrashing while wearing a huge smile and made the cover of January 1975 Karate Illustrated in the process.

      Norris competed in non contact tournament point style, slap sparring, flailing generally no head contact ,Norris never fought full contact. Lewis hated the silly play fighting of non contact tournament Karate and began this much more realistic full contact events which eventually became kickboxing

      @Brian Jones but most of his wins against joe Lewis was point fighting, Lewis was a heavyweight, don’t tell me he would beat him in a full contact match, joe lewis was undefeated for 11 yrs in full contact kickboxing for a reason, those 3 L don’t mean nothing.

    • @Wowvod
      @Wowvod 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Brian Jones both Bruce lee and joe Lewis said point fighting is useless, you need a real fight to show who has more skill in hand to hand combat not some perverted touching from two men, point fighting doesn’t mean your better, sure there’s people that can fight that came from a point fighting back ground like Michael venom Paige, but he’s fought cans in his own octagon, give him some one that’s more technical/ proficient or a wrestler he’s fcked, so I don’t even know if chuck would be able to hold his own in full contact kickboxing and become a champion since he’s been in karate point fighting half his career.

      At this point in time, there were pretty much no set rules. In some of the other Joe fights, fighters are wearing elbow pads because elbow blows were allowed.

      Kickboxing has been an umbrella term for different sets of rules at different points in time.
      Low kicks, thows, elbows and knees all have been legal or illegal depending on when and where.

      @@carlinytc7431 "yeah you are right. But Joe became a much better fighter once bruce started training him"
      I would agree that there are some things that Lewis gained by training with Lee. It's hard to isolate it to Lee though.
      Lewis was improving in general because he was training and competing. He also trained with other people. For example, Lewis also trained with Orbillo, a boxer, and when he did kickboxing he was using karate kicks and boxing punches. But even though the technique and tactics would have come from there, Lee trained more general concepts like speed, timing, and control of space. So you could say what he got from Lee was universal striking concepts.
      Anyway, I think we can agree that training with Lee was beneficial. We should also be able to agree that Lewis was already a champion before training with Lee at all, so Lee wasn't responsible for Lewis becoming a great fighter.
