I knew Joe in the 70's. As a 4th black in kyokushin, I have always tried my best to learn from the real deals. To this day at age 68, I'm still training 3 hours a day. Don't drink, smoke or take drugs or meds, eat lots of fruit and veggies, keep a positive outlook on absolutely everything and you will never be sick. I was told that on my first day in Karate in 1968 and I live those principles. Thin, athletic, and happy, even though I'm always broke.
You’re fortunate I’m 63 a lifelong martial artist too and I did everything you described didn’t drink didn’t smoke didn’t use drugs train like an athlete work on my cardiovascular fitness my strength my flexibility eat fruits and vegetables and drink water. And I still ended up on dialysis and with a heart condition. When I try to say if you’re running around in your 60s and you’re healthy don’t attribute it all to your dietOr the fact that you work out regularly. Life plays funny games with your body it sure did with mine
I feel that he talks entirely too much and demonstrate physically entirely too little when I go to a seminar I don’t come to hear the person talk like a college professor. If it’s Marsha Lights I want to see something demonstrated that I can interact with From more than a few minutes. I find that Mr. Louis although knowledgeable is very verbose you’d like to hear himself talk I think
To me, Joe Lewis was the real deal. Two years undefeated, full contact martial arts. Few opponents making it past the second round! Way better than Chuck Norris who was... All Show and No GO! That's known as... A FACT!
FunnyHow he says JKD guys” can’t fight” so called“ JKD guys“, we’re doing full contact sparring with headgear boxing gloves and shinguards when most of the martial arts world was practicing point Karate thinking that they can’t do it for real or they would kill you. The JKD System was rooted in reality-based fighting And training. I reiterate JKD was doing this year’s before the Karate world caught on. I understand Jo’s reasoning for saying what he says because he’s Self proclaimed father of kickboxing or something like that. And again what he’s always seems to be doing is a knock one Bruce Lee in someway. For a guy who claims to respect him as a teacher he sure does take a lot of cheap shots at in
@12:11 (Jeet Kun Do) Lewis puts Bruce Lee on a kids see-saw, when fighting is the name of the game - as Lewis said; "Lee is not a fighter - he is a great teacher."
I love how people denigrate Bruce Lee now when you know darn well the same people was on his jockstrap idolizing him. Joe Joe is fond at pointing out that“ Bruce was not a fighter“ it’s a backhanded insult that implies that because joe was a fighter but his skill set is better. I disagree what’s more correct for Louis to say is that Bruce Lee never stepped into the ring and competed on that level that’s more accurateThat’s not a knock on Bruce’s fighting skill because let’s face it very few of us who” can fight For real” I’ve never stepped into a boxing ring or an octagon. That’s not the litmus test of whether you can fight or not but joe seems to be content to make that the test and the insults in my opinion
I know I’m commenting a lot forgive me even with my criticism I really am a fan of Joe Louis and have been since I was a kid. I feel like I’m objective in my criticism even the people I respect. One thing Jo said that definitely resonates is that people in the Marcia large community especially Karate are poor At defense. And have a tendency not to work on it or even teach it. I was fortunate when I started learning martial arts in my instructor drilled me on defense for us. The rationale was that you going to be getting hit a lot more than you’re Hitting in the beginning! So you need to learn how to block how to redirect how to cover and how to get out of the way
joe was very good, he didnt look like a fancy fighter like bill wallace but he got results so he was certainly doing something right. i rank joe better than chuck norris
Bill wasn’t fancy Bill was just masterful. He uses flexibility and is mastery of a technique to school on people. How masterful do you have to be to throw one kick with one leg People knew what was coming, and still couldn’t stop it.
I sooooo wish joe would teach his signature side kick but he never does. Instead he’s content to demo boxing type concepts and I’d rather learn that from a boxer not a karate guy who knows how to box.
Apparently you can do both and get results. Bill wallace was what do you call fancy but he was scoring on people at will hitting them in the face with roundhouse kicks that was so photogenic that you thought his fights were fixed. So you can look graceful and stillScore you don’t have to be sloppy. A champion was not talked about who is excellent technique wise was Paul Vizio is technique was superb he even use those jumping spinning cakes that are reserved for demonstration’s but he did them for real. Benny The jet is another fighter who comes to mine who looks fancy but can do damage. It depends on the mastery of the individual fighter. Louis is very effective at what he does because in my opinion he’s a powerful man strength of his attribute so he could pretty much slap you and hurt you. His level of skill Doesn’t have to be a factor.

Joe was a great mentor.
Joe is the most underrated teacher in fight history
Agreed
Genius.
Nope. Totally overrated.
Nope I disagree he’s not underrated at all he’s acknowledged as being a good teacher at the wrong email is living doing this

One of the greatest. No question!
Wish there was sound footage of him and Bruce Lee working out together

Being able to explain so good shows its place art of him, as if his record didn't say enough. Ashamed cancer got him.
