Cap. 🧢 LR RR have consistently been far more problematic than most other brands. Yeah, Tundras have issues but the percentage of people bricking their Tundras is far less than those with LR/RR. Imagine, you’ve had these issues in the first 10k miles of ownership. Imagine what it’s like when you’ve had it for 50k. I love LR/RR. Even thought of getting a LR4 as a over landing rig. Went as far as to test drive one. Settled on a GX460 based off the feedback I got from owners. Beautiful suv. But not worth the headache.
We have two 2023 BMW's. My car, a X6, has 18,000 miles and my son's X4 has 29,000 miles. I have owned a crap load of cars since my first in 1974. It is NOT acceptable, with what we spend on cars, to have a serious technical issue in 10,000 miles!!! My TWO BMW's have been flawless and Land Rover is less reliable and everybody knows that. I have a 2014 Dodge Durango that has never had a major issue since we purchased it brand new. If you buy a new car and you have issues that's unacceptable. That's not good advice.
A brand where brake calipers often cost $2,000. each, textured plastic fascia trim $900. a piece, dealer labor rates of $250./hr or more and the list goes on. While interiors are often beautifully trimmed and styling is nice, let the blue bloods and glitterati keep their favorite SUV.
They are not interchangeable, unless you buy one from a RHD market. JLR Tech here. Also, they don't really block your view all that much, regardless the car has your back with Blind Spot Monitoring and most have surround cameras and ClearSight™ rear view mirror camera.
My LR3 was quirky but 100% reliable. My 2012 LR4 was amazing and 100% reliable. My 2021 Defender 110 is perfect and has 50,000 miles on it and has been 100% reliable.
No. Defender having issues in year 1 at $80K+ does not equate with a general Tundra issue at $40K. Jesus. In the first year most cars do NOT have issues.
I struggled to get through this with the repeated comments regarding the wife and the nervous giggles. More like a review of your relationship than the vehicle itself.
This entire video sounds like a defeated man trying to convince himself he likes the expensive purchase he made that he knows was not a smart purchase.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 welcome to the club 🎉 🎈I couldn’t wait to get rid of my Range Rover Evoque. It was the Best car I ever owned, under warranty. It was the worst car I ever owned, out of warranty. Although if I had money to burn then I’m definitely buying a Defender 130 X 🚙🚗
I will always be a fan of Land Rover brand for it's designed capabilities and comforts. I'd like to drive one.Unfortunately I cannot afford a new one :( I'm looking around for a used Defender but I fear it might put me in a financial hole when something breaks out once warranty is out
It seems it's a known issue of the Defender losing power steering in certain circumstances. Do they have a fix for this? I've seen people on their forum who bought a Defender 3-4 years ago had this same issue.
As a Tech in Puerto Rico, I've never dealt with any Power Steering issue on the Defenders, I think maybe one or two other techs did once each. So idk, different markets have different problems is what I've learned from talking to other techs at the JLR Training Academy. Edit: well not different markets, we're still USDM, I meant different envirements.
As a car reviewer, not knowing Land Rover make garbage is your own fault and shows you are not professional, has no knowledge about your job, your are probably doing it just for quick money. Shame
Keep a ten mil wrench in the glovebox. When power steering goes out open cover under passenger seat and disconnect the battery for ten seconds. Steering fixed.
Sorry that the Defender didn't work out. Good luck on getting a new vehicle (please post more videos of the car search.... love seeing the struggle involved in finding a new vehicle).
Look at autotrader in the UK for Range Rovers. About the first 2-3 pages are cars with engine or gearbox problems, many with under 100k miles. Jeremy Clarkson did a video not long ago about his. Obviously his has been maintained like royalty, but it still blew up 2 turbos costing 4k each to repair.
Bro you cannot defend this brand when you have power steering going out at 150 miles, imagine the issues this car will have at 150k miles, if it makes it there
Haha so dramatic. The overwhelming majority of new Defender owners are more than happy with their rigs, but a video about that wouldn't get nearly the views. I'm on my second new Defender and it's by far the best vehicle I've ever owned.
No matter how great the warranty and the dealer is (I mean, it does, but not for long term ownership when the warranty expires... ) if the vehicle needs to be there often, I can understand wanting to trade it in... Overall, Land Rover is less reliable and cost of ownership is much higher than other brands. I love the looks of the Defender and thought about getting one... but depreciation, cost of services, overall reliability issues... I just could not do it. But man does it look amazing. Specially in the configuration (with the options) that you got. Your wife is making the smart decision. Best to bite the bullet and get rid of it now. Looking forward to seeing what she gets next.
It has nothing to do with the reliability of the defender, there are tons of defenders out there, when you have money, you want a new car every year, that's how simple it is
Well, perhaps there is a connection between the incredible buying experience and the future breakdown as in they know it's coming because they know there are serious quality issues still plaguing the brand... I had recently looked at Range Rover and in conversation with a saleswoman, she had strongly recommended I lease and not purchase. She will remain nameless, god bless her, she actually cared about her customers.
I've had four Toyotas, Prado 120, Prado 150 (company car), 79 series (still own) and a 200 Sahara TTV8 diesel (still own). 600k between them and not one break down. All of them lived in the Pilbara and did hard work. I'll give you the tip - no JLR product will last the way these did (have). BTW I also owned a Discovery but after two engine rebuilds to reach 280k I kicked the habit of these POS.
Sorry you babbled a lot said nothing about the vehicle and thats that. What were the issues in 10 thousand miles,I have never bought a new car that had issues for a the least 30 thousand miles period, that is Acuras,Mercedes Benz ,Fords and others . What vehicles have you had that always gave you problems ? Let me tell you something,Toyotas ,Mazdas ,Hyundai and Nissans have a huge amount of problems and friends that own them said because of the loss they would take turning them in they just kept them.
Talking about service and warranty so much, says enough about Defender's reliability. Instead of saying "poor reliability", he says "excellent service". It is literally poorly made piece of crap. Whoever values their safety, and safety of their family, should stay clear of JLR products.
it would much more pleasant to watch this vid if you stopped praising the dealership non stop. Seriously, we got it, it has fantastic service. shut up already!
Lovely vehicle as long as you have a good dealer, and it’s still covered under warranty. It doesn’t sound like long term reliability would be very good and I think customer satisfaction would drastically change when the paying the Land Rover repair bills.
I wouldn’t be comfortable letting my wife or kids drive an unreliable car. My subjective experience is the ratio of problems to # sold is too high. There’s just too many better choices out there.
I’m torn between the Defender and the Lexus GX. Would like to try the Defender but reviews of my local dealer is not good for service. But I get it. Sometimes just luck of draw. Had a Tesla S with no real issues. Had problems with Audi, Porsche, bmw, Mercedes.
I had several European cars in the past and I'm done with them. Sure they look cool and drive well but too many visits to service. Specially after warrantee, forget about it. Owning 5 cars and trucks all Lexus and Toyota now, LX and LC are the two best vehicles I had ever own hands down in terms of performance, reliability and resale value. I won't buy any other brands.
Power steering went out after 150 miles !!! Then it went out again. Then the coolant lines needed replaced at 10,000 miles !!!! You only have 10,000 miles on it. It's a brand-new car !!! OMG, Land Rover is still selling lemons !!! Ugh... stop with the excuses and using this video to promote the dealer.
I can not fathom why anybody wastes their money on anything that Land Rover currently builds. Sure, great cars when working, but how long does that last. Awful reliability, lacklustre dealership support, horrifically expensive parts, painful owner experience. That my friends comes from a British guy who once lived and breathed Land Rover.
When a Land Rover / Range Rover owners post comments here that they never had any issues, that's a complete BS. There were known issues but owners tend to lie about it or have amnesia for some reason. It's better to share your true story that the warranty will cover the engine light, brake calipers, engine oil leak, etc., and not just be an ambassador of the brand. Bottomline is LR//RR are good looking and cool cars,, hands down, and offers social status, and that's what the brand is good at. I might get a used one by the way, because it looks cool. =D
can not imagine dropping 90k on a landrover they are legendary for their depreciation and problems, I'd get her a 4 runner before they downgrade them to the 4cylinder
In my opinion, the trade-in value alone makes keeping it for at least another year or two the best option financially, assuming you can afford it in the first place. Besides, once everything is fixed under warranty, it might be pretty reliable, and if it isn't, you can still trade it later.
A few years ago I test drove a Discovery, went over (gently) a large speed hump and the electronics in the dash went into full party mode. Bought a Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2 diesel. 350000 klms later the worst problem (ONLY) problem was a failed fuel sensor, a $120 part. Land Rovers don’t have a bad rep for no reason. A friend bought a top of the range Range Rover, ‘the happiest day of my life when I rid myself of it’.
My Land Rover Discovery 2 is 25 yrs old , V8 gas(petrol) with 346,000kms on it. Most of the issues are to do with non Landrover parts, such as Bosch door locks, brake pins that seize the same pins used on Volvos, fords , Chrysler. Basic things, very thirsty in city . Very fixable by backyard mechanics.
Dude, why are you apologizing sooo much for a flawed product 🤔 (it's coming across like that😢). Those of us who've owned these things we just send out warnings ⚠️ to friends. Do you want to look glamorous stranded on the road with your SUV buy a LRover/Jaguars product. OR do you want a tried , trusted and tested product. Buy a LEXUS or maybe a Benz😊
Your wife is a smart woman, bet you already know that. Steering wheel given out less than 1k miles and again @ 10k with other things breaking down. Not worth the future hassle.
Extremely strange. Wife thinks vehicle should be changed after 2 comparatively minor issues and you just agree and sell the car you both somehow liked very much!?!?🤔
Your videos are very entertaining and informative. Appreciate your channel. Consumer perception has inertia and is always a lagging indicator of the actual state of affairs. So no surprise that JLR may generally be more reliable than common opinion would have it, and Toyota less so.
It was a toss up between the model y and the defender for my teenaged daughter. So glad I went with the model y. In hindsight, there’s too much hassle involved with the defender regardless of cost.
It may be my ears, but what did it need at 10k miles, coolant lines?🤔 I'd say power steering going out at 150 miles and then something else at 10k is a sign Land Rovers are leasemobiles just like Mercedes, BMW, Volvo and some Audi/Porsche models. I only have anecdotal experience with Land Rover...Coworker bought a 2017 Defender that was 2 years old and under 30k miles at the time, ended up dumping it in less than a year. Then a family member bought the small model, (name escapes me) the one where Victoria Beckham (lol) was involved in the design? That thing was an absolute nightmare almost from the beginning and seemed to spend more time at the dealer than in their garage. They toughed it out until the 4 year lease was up and then ran away from it. They were seriously afraid to drive the thing more than 50 miles from the city they lived in because it contained the only LR dealership within more than 200 miles. That's not what I'd call a pleasant ownership experience. Sure they look cool, have some awesome customizing from the factory, drive great and have fun gadgets...but if you're afraid to take a vehicle made to go off-road even on a vacay that's mostly pavement, what's the point? Land Rover long ago joined Jeep as former military/hardcore outdoor vehicles to expensive (and in some ways fragile) status symbols. Sure both Jeep and LR still have some serious off-road chops, but both are far more likely to leave you needing a very very expensive remote off-road tow than the alternatives from Toyota...or literally anything else.
I don't understand how it is a positive ownership experience but you are selling it/trading it because of issues creeping up. Sounds like your wife has concerns that the Defender "will eventually" leave her stranded "when" it breaks. That don't sound like positive ownership to me. You might as well just lease it for 3 years and will always be under warranty. That way you get a new car every three years and will "almost always" have a positive ownership experience. Cost more but you'd be worry free.
I like your review . I had a brand new defender 2023 I ordered . I had a few issues like yours within a month . It was an embarrassing situation and I could not drive my car. I spent almost 100K and could not drive it . they fixed the problems . Why are you not mentioning ? Defender is not a reliable car . You are not getting paid from land rover I guess. I traded my car quickly . be bold since you are not getting paid from them . sometimes people rely on your reviews.
For the last few videos I have watched, you have milked this whole process. You have two other vehicles. You haven’t had any issues so far after the power steering. Get an extended warranty keep it or move on.
So, your wife basically believes the Defender isn’t reliable. You’ve had to change a set of lines within 10k miles, and 2 steering wheel issues… I figured by now Land Rover would be going above and beyond to win a good reputation. My LR4 has been a 💩 show and I’ve had it only 8 months.

I m sure your wife absolutely needed an offroader with a snorkel and a roof rack to navigate through the jungle to get your kids from school 😵💫
These are the people that buy land ro er these days. He says all cars have electronics these days, true, but this car have much much more electronics than an average car, while offroaders need to have less. All all I don't get this video. He said they didn't have issue at all, only at 150 miles, but then he mentions that the power steering went at 10000 miles.... ok
I'll take it off road
Yuppies are out there. Look at me! Look at me! Validate my existence!
I wouldn’t listen to anything this guy says.
I cannot begin to tell you how many I’ve seen when I head back to London that are fully loaded with the roof rack, snorkel, spotlights, ladder etc. As he said, they got the Explorer Pack and ladder because it “looked cool”. But he’s going nowhere adventurous, because he’d ruin the white interior his wife chose 🤔🙄
"Happy wife - happy life" is one of the phrases both my wife and I _HATE_ the most!
Such an antiquated viewpoint that needs to evolve. We always say: _"Happy couple sees no trouble."_
This is the way forward ladies and gentlemen.
Stay classy my friends.
Somebody should tell that to women.
@@Holden-McGroin Oh they know but they refuse to acknowledge.
Apparently, only the woman in the relationship is allowed to be happy these days. What a sad and misguided time we currently inhabit.

@@BertShackleford We do know!
The problem is that other women want to put us down and shut us up for speaking the truth. They like being the dictator in the relationship. I truly feel bad for those men stuck in that type of marriage.
You deserve better treatment gentlemen.
Funny thing is that statement is a comedic jest that few of the most sappy suckers see as an actual viewpoint. Your happy couple cliche is just as sad. Stay in the box my moron! 🙄

30k dollar depreciation for 10k miles? That is 3 dollar per mile just for loss of value!! Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick with Toyota.
Ok have fun? 💁♀️ 🤷♀️ no Toyota will drive or turn heads like this 😂😂😂
@@DiaperSNiFFER The turning heads as they pass you broken down at the side of the road? Those turning heads?
Slightly misleading title. It sounds like you had one problem, but you couldn’t be happier with the vehicle
That's not good advice.
whats its worth now half of what you paid for it
Vehicle is so problematic owner has lost confidence in it. End of video you’re welcome.
Yep, definitely not for the poor 🙄
Is that case on the right side block your view? Too much to change for LHD?
They are not interchangeable, unless you buy one from a RHD market. JLR Tech here.
Also, they don't really block your view all that much, regardless the car has your back with Blind Spot Monitoring and most have surround cameras and ClearSight™ rear view mirror camera.
That suitcase on the side window is so stupid.
Land Rover at the bottom of every reliability survey. Avoid!
I struggled to get through this with the repeated comments regarding the wife and the nervous giggles. More like a review of your relationship than the vehicle itself.
The absolute state of male land rover owners: "..my wife said.. 🤡 hehe .."
This entire video sounds like a defeated man trying to convince himself he likes the expensive purchase he made that he knows was not a smart purchase.
Yup there’s a good reason they are ranked last in customer satisfaction and reliability for ALL manufacturers
I'd like to drive one.Unfortunately I cannot afford a new one :( I'm looking around for a used Defender but I fear it might put me in a financial hole when something breaks out once warranty is out
why would you buy something that you'd worry about financial ruin if something broke? It's just a car. No car is worth serious financial risk.
@@MrRandomcommentguy just the way I think.I chose a different vehicle and I’m happy w/it
Wife: "I've fallen out of love with my ticking time bomb of a vehicle."
😂😂😂
30k in a year...nuts...thank you for your service by ordering new
It seems it's a known issue of the Defender losing power steering in certain circumstances.
Rule 1: Dont listen to wife
Rule 2: Always buy Toyota
Happy life
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Did the explorer pack cause alot of wind noise?
Bro you cannot defend this brand when you have power steering going out at 150 miles, imagine the issues this car will have at 150k miles, if it makes it there
Haha so dramatic. The overwhelming majority of new Defender owners are more than happy with their rigs, but a video about that wouldn't get nearly the views. I'm on my second new Defender and it's by far the best vehicle I've ever owned.
Misleading title for this video
Plus Range Rovers have the Worst Resale Value in the industry!
when a man let his wife guide him, he has no balls. and need to check his Test level. Ben Hardy, you are the leader of your house? or your wife?
It has nothing to do with the reliability of the defender, there are tons of defenders out there, when you have money, you want a new car every year, that's how simple it is
Power steering went out at 150 miles!?!?!?!?!?! Land Rover are really outdoing themselves these days, ROFL!!!!!
Yeah I would have forced the dealer to buy it back under lemon law if there’s one in state purchased.
The new defender was tested for 1.2 million miles during the testing phase. I think JLR have worked on their reliability record.
We love it and we looooove the dealer but we are getting rid of it! 12 out of 10
Also….the mechanics at the Land Rover dealership told me themselves that if you’re under warranty you’re good, but if not….RUN!!!….🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Well... Land Rover has so many opportunities to practice their customer service, they've gotten quite good at it.
Where did you get all your money at such a young age?
Did you ever use that snorkel?
Talking about service and warranty so much, says enough about Defender's reliability. Instead of saying "poor reliability", he says "excellent service". It is literally poorly made piece of crap. Whoever values their safety, and safety of their family, should stay clear of JLR products.
it would much more pleasant to watch this vid if you stopped praising the dealership non stop. Seriously, we got it, it has fantastic service. shut up already!
What do you put in the outside container?
Lovely vehicle as long as you have a good dealer, and it’s still covered under warranty. It doesn’t sound like long term reliability would be very good and I think customer satisfaction would drastically change when the paying the Land Rover repair bills.
I wouldn’t be comfortable letting my wife or kids drive an unreliable car. My subjective experience is the ratio of problems to # sold is too high. There’s just too many better choices out there.
1 year old and 3 times unscheduled service. I can understand why wife don’t want this crap
I'm surprised that it made it to 10k miles without problems.
Have a 5 year old Lexus GS F V8. No issues whatsoever and dealer service is reasonable.
OH! COOLANT lines was it?
I can not fathom why anybody wastes their money on anything that Land Rover currently builds. Sure, great cars when working, but how long does that last. Awful reliability, lacklustre dealership support, horrifically expensive parts, painful owner experience. That my friends comes from a British guy who once lived and breathed Land Rover.
Factoring depreciation you basically leased that rover for 20k per annum. Very clever.
4 runners lost all class after 1996…. My 1996 is in mint condition with upgrades and will be 4$ale soon, I’m buying a Defender 💙❗️
How do you block channels?
My Land Rover Discovery 2 is 25 yrs old , V8 gas(petrol) with 346,000kms on it. Most of the issues are to do with non Landrover parts, such as Bosch door locks, brake pins that seize the same pins used on Volvos, fords , Chrysler. Basic things, very thirsty in city . Very fixable by backyard mechanics.
This video only proves that Land Rover is unreliable and poorly made. Power steering going out at 150 is extremely unacceptable.
What a piece of garbage. I am so happy with my new 4 runner trd pro.
Your wife knows what is good for her.
8:10 Sounds like you need a Toyota 4runner before thre new model comes out.
It was a toss up between the model y and the defender for my teenaged daughter. So glad I went with the model y. In hindsight, there’s too much hassle involved with the defender regardless of cost.
Land Rover Discovery LR4. 120k miles only replaced two lower control arms. Best car I have ever owned.
I’ve driven Land Rovers into battle and have owned one all my life. Would never drive anything else.

I don't know about you,but 90k vs 150 miles problems that is a huge problem,10 k ,all the hoses, are you the user or Land Rover test driver, your wife is in the wright.
Right.
What a load of nonsense. Everything is great great great. Yet you sell after one year at a mindboggling depreciation. The conclusion cannot be anything other than that this mall crawler is an enormous shitheap. Stick to the 'old' boring but bulletproof and long lasting Toyota.
