This is true. That show has the same ending/outro as for all the current tour - All The Works of Nature Which Adorn the World - Ad Astra which has a similar feel.
The Hellfest version unfortunately has a minute of video blackout but is back in time for the end of the bow and for Floor to step up and do the vocal. IMO it outdoes all the others I've seen recorded (though seeing it live at Wembley was special).
Every time I watch it, even though I know it's coming, I have to hold on to my chair. Jynger - do yourself a favour and after you watch the Hellfest Shoemaker, watch the outro. But be prepared

In memory of Eugene Shoemaker. The only person to rest in peace on the moon.
    Such a beautiful song 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The Romeo & Juliet quote was on the plaque that carried his ashes to the moon
The Romeo and Juliet quote was read by Tuomas's wife, Johanna Kurkela💞

  • @TimoArula
    @TimoArula ปีที่แล้ว +14

So ,... Eugene Merle Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program.
He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission.
The spoken word in this is done by Tuomas Holopainen's Wife Johanna Kurkela ( a section from Romeo And Juliet is also carved Eugene's urn ).
"Shoemaker" has become a favorite song of NASA's scientific community. Tuomas has a deep inclination towards science and this is reflected in many of his plays. This ensured the entry of Nightwish into the history books of science, several discoveries in the field being named after them. These new discoveries include: Alpenglow Rockshelter: Archaeological site named after Nightwish Song. Tanidromites Nightwishorun: New Crab species. Sciophila Holopaineni: New species of Mosquito found in Finland. Ophiomitrella Floorae: New species of Cretaceous brittle star named after Floor Jansen. Tmesisternus floorjansenae: new species of beetle named after Floor.
Song from Human. :II: Nature and it is a Masterful Album !!!!
I have experienced this "Live" and to be honest, even though I have listened this song a 100 times, the up close and personal experience destroyed me completely. It was that Powerful...
    NWSU 🤘🥲🤘.

Originally, in 2020, Nightwish announced that this song will not be part of the tour setlist because it is a bit challenging to perform.
However, fans all over the world wanted to include it and Nightwish listened to their fans and finally decided to include it in the set list.
Based on my own experience, I can say, it was a successful decision!
When Nightwish performed this song and Floor started the last part, the audience (some thousands, 8000?) became completely silent, no one moved, as if everyone was petrified for a small moment, everyone wanted to absorb that moment, it was a majestic emotional experience!

Another example of the pure and undiluted genius of Tuomas Holopainen. Who else could reference Shakespeare in song, and apply it to a brilliant 20th century scientist who taught our astronauts to be our explorers to the secrets of the universe, which was on the plaque accompanying his remains. The line that I appreciate so very much is the "cut into little stars," as Eugene Shoemaker was cremated prior to having his ashes deposited on the moon, and what is a more appropriate description of cremation than being cut into little stars. At this moment, Dr. Shoemaker is the only human with the honor of being buried "off earth," and on the destination to which he so desperately wish to travel to explore. At some point, I am very sure, for a fee you will have the option of joining him ... as soon as somebody can design a method in which to make themselves ridiculously wealthy in the process. But for now, he remains the one and only, and he is rightfully immortalized in the music of the preeminent genius composer of my lifetime (IMHumbleO) and the voice of the greatest voice of my generation (also IMHO). I find it very beautiful and fitting than Tuomas had his wife, Johanna Kurkela perform the speaking part of the quotation from Shakespeare. For those who have not yet heard the incredible music of AURA (Tuomas, Troy and Johanna) let this be the call for you to do so as soon as humanly possible. Jynger, yet again another touching and wonderful opportunity to "spend a little time" with you - as distant as it might be. You are so expressive that I feel as though I know you as a very dear friend, and I appreciate that. Thank you for sharing once again. BTW - Nightwish currently ends their concerts with the five brilliant men standing in a line across the stage, while Floor performs "Ad Astra" (the ethereal ending of this song). It is a sign of great respect from the band, but also unbelievable that she accomplishes it to perfection night after night.

Without doubt one of the most moving Nightwish songs I have experienced. I will never forget the first time I heard this as I walked late at night gazing up at the stars. I had to stop in my tracks and looked up into the heavens..I was totally choked up. Just the music, Floor´s divine voice and me feeling so small in this vast universe.

I really hope Doctor Shoemaker's family know about this tribute to him. The spoken Shakespeare quote is by Tuomas' wife Johanna, who herself is a fine singer. You could see her in 'A Lifetime of Adventure' which Tuomas wrote to honour Don Rosa the cartoonist known for The Scrooge McDuck stories. It sounds an unlikely idea but honestly it's good!

They’ve been using the Ad Astra piece as a sort of encore at shows lately, after Greatest Show. The band comes out and bows, then they separate and stand in line, Floor steps forward, and sings that part, holding the last note for 15-17 seconds. It is pretty awesome. Here it is from the Deichbrand Festival in Germany a few months ago. th-cam.com/video/-Od35cxdpXk/w-d-xo.html

Your Nightwish journey ‘I never want it to end’. I love your reactions, both for your reaction and the excuse it gives me a to take a fix of Nightwish. In my opinion(for what it’s worth) Shoemaker is not one of Nightwish stronger numbers UNTIL you know the back story. Then it all slots into place and it becomes a huge story told with brilliance. The Romeo and Juliette extract could almost have been written with Shakespeare having Mr Holopainen’s future work somehow already in mind. Then Laudato. The shining climax of the piece. Floor somehow surpassing everything her greatest fans were expecting. I was eagerly awaiting seeing Laudato ‘hit you’. Yes, tissues almost obligatory. Self, wife and daughter honoured to be present at Birmingham concert last month to hear the Goddess go operatic, IN LATIN. We would have been more than ecstatic with Laudato, but to receive the Valkyrie concert closing gift of AD ASTRA…..!!!!!!

This song is not only about the discoverer of the causes of the craters on the Earth and the moon Eugene Shoemaker, but also about one of the causes named after him, among others: Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 Eugene Merle Shoemaker was an American geologist, astronomer, comet hunter and aspiring astronaut.
Eugene Shoemaker was the first to recognize the significance of impact craters to Earth's geology. In addition to craters, he also became interested in the objects that caused them, and set up a long-term research program. In this program his wife Carolyn showed a talent for discovering small differences on photographic plates. The search resulted in the discovery of 32 comets and 40 asteroids, most with orbits within Earth's. This search resulted in the discovery of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1993 and its impact on the planet Jupiter a year later. Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9 for short with official designation D/1993 F2) is a comet of which 21 fragments fell on the planet Jupiter between 16 and 22 July 1994. Some of those parts had a diameter of 2 kilometers.
You would be delighted to see and hear this song live. ❤

NICE! As soon as I saw the notification that you had uploaded this, I just had to go check it out!
Something noteworthy about the ending of the song with the operatic vocals is how she navigates in the "passaggio", the area where a voice transitions from one register to the other. Any professional opera singer would be impressed with how well this was done. Higher notes are much easier for a soprano voice, and we all love to hear Floor up in that range, but vocally I find the lower notes to be equally impressive, for example just before the male "ad astra" vocals come in and just before the final verse. For her to be able to put that much power into notes in that lower range is a real testament to her training, skill and maybe most of all, natural talent. I think most people love great voices that are in ranges that they themselves either struggle with or can't do at all. Personally, I have a baritone/bass voice, and I love listening to sopranos because that's an area that I just can't do - even male tenor is a struggle. And I find that many women tend to love bass voices for that same reason. Just watch some of the female reaction channels when they are listening to Tim Foust or Jeff Castellucci. 😄 Something funny is seeing people's reactions to extremely low female contralto voices. Diana Ankudinova is a contralto, and it's hilarious watching people's reactions to her singing. She has a power in her lower register that is really something to behold. She gets down into lower male tenor territory and her resonance is almost alien - it doesn't seem real. If you get a chance, you might check out her cover of Elvis' song Can't Help Falling In Love. The ending of that song is just as crazy as the ending of Shoemaker!

And since you recognized that little riff of Enter Sandman in Greatest Show On Earth and seem to be a Metallica fan, you should check out the piano version of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters by Gamazda. She is an exceptional pianist, and just watching her hands when she plays this song is mesmerizing. It makes me regret never having learned to play piano. The way she plays this, it's not hard to see the connection between metal and classical, and it's not hard to envision Nothing Else Matters as something that Beethoven might have composed. A beautiful dark piece in a minor key like this would have been right up his alley. I love both classical and metal music, and though I am by no means an outwardly emotional person, that cover is beautiful and will make me tear up a bit. Might even be good material for a reaction video.

Loved your comment on this beautiful song. Floor is absolutely incredible doing this live in every performance on this 2022 world tour. You aren't the only one with the tears. By the way, although it is only a fan video, it is very good quality and well worth watching the acoustic performance by Floor and Troy of a Nightwish song they have never performed live before their show in Hamburg on December 12th, 2022. This video comes from their show at Gliwice, Poland on December 14th. Incredibly beautiful.

"Shoemaker " is not about a shoe-smith, but a tribute to Gene Shoemaker an American geologist and one of the founders of the field of planetary science, and with NASA's help (moon landing) the first and only person to be buried off-world. .

Great choice, Jynger! I bought the album before I saw this video, and saw this video before I saw it performed live. It was a winner from the very beginning. What a composition! You should check out a live performance or two when you can. When Floor starts the operatic ending, huge audiences fall silent, hands held to the sky, as she nails it every time. It is among the most powerful Nightwish moments to witness. Many thanks!

Last time I suggest this. You will get to them eventually. THE WARNING. A trio of sisters from Mexico. If you like Rock&Roll, you will love these girls. They are reviving the genre. Check out EVOLVE, CHOKE, REVENANT. Those would be a good start.

I really hope Floor tackles opera someday. She has such a haunting and beautiful voice when she starts hitting
    operatic notes.

    • @mnewm21
      @mnewm21 ปีที่แล้ว

It would be interesting and I agree with your sentiment but I doubt she would have the patience or time to invest in getting her voice to the level required. In terms of maturity her voice should be heading into its prime but given how technical opera is it would require a huge investment of time. Maybe if Nightwish wraps in the next 10 years it could be something for her to explore?? I am however grateful that she continues to add operatic styled elements to Nightwish as it means they maintain a solid connection to the bands roots.
