      I'm having issues with mine after replacing the impellar. Not sure what happened. But the small rod in the center of the drive shaft on the lower unit is stuck up. When I reassembled everything. I got the boat out. Water flowed great but when I went to put in reverse or drive it just immediately stalls out. I realigned the transmission shaft where it was correct. But now the only thing I noticed that is different is the small rod piece in the center of the lower unit sticking up.

      Thanks for watching, any update? Are you servicing an outdrive or outboard?

  • @CryptoGhostie

    FYI: Mercruiser put out an service update years ago to on longer use the o-ring on the input shaft.
    Do yourself a favor and install thegreased impeller first then slide the upper impeller housing down the shaft. While pushing down on the housing rotate the shaft clockwise. It will slip right over the impeller easily. Doing it this way removes the chance of the impeller clip from coming loose and falling out.
    Also, use some 3M wheatherstrip adhiesive to glue the oil o-ring to the lower unit so It doesn't fall off when mounting the lower unit to the upper unit.

      @@DIYwithMichaelBorders Mike, enjoyed the video, I am doing my 86 alpha
      1 this year, and bought the kit with the base and mine came with the base O ring installed and I noticed the gasket would not go over, now I know the proper way to put in on,, but in the kit there is a round pin about 1inch long and maybe 3/16 in diameter, I am not sure what it is for, can you help me?

      That's for getting back to me.

      Thanks for the follow up. Ok, we see it now. For our exact serial number outdrive, our replacement OEM kit is (46-96148Q 8) and it indeed has that pin in it.
      This pin is not used with our serial number outdrive, and it’s likely not used in yours either.
      If you’re old water pump and gasket kit that you removed did not have pin…it’s very likely that this pin is not used on your serial number outdrive.
      For legality purposes, since we shared OEM p/n in this comment, we have to add the below statement.

    I appreciate this video, to remove the impeller is where I'm at . My issue is that the bottom housing is fried and melted. I removed the bottom housing and part of that housing remained. The round casing seal bearing still remains and is stuck. I fear that it is melted on to casing. Don't know what to do. Any thoughts?

      Are you working with an aftermarket kit or OEM? We checked our manual and it doesn’t reference a pin. Are you referring to the key?

    Is it nessesary to take the whole lower unit down for just the impeller replacement ?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for watching, you will need to separate the lower unit from the upper unit to gain access to your water pump for replacement. However, if your outdrive is still installed on the transom…you don’t actually have to remove the outdrive from the boat to perform this replacement project.
      You can just separate the lower unit from the upper unit and remove lower unit altogether from boat.
      Keep us posted on your DIY project, looking forward to hearing back from you. 😎👍

    Can I ask a question no one ever addresses in detail? The white tube off the impeller housing, when you’re assembling the drive back in, that water tube slides over some copper tube coming from the upper part of the drive, but how is that white plastic tube sealed at the top when you put it back together? When I look up inside the upper drive, I see a rubber housing, with a small take-off type rubber tube. That white plastic tube don’t appear to slide over it. What am I missing? Thanks

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Great question & its sole purpose is to be a guide.
      If you remove the white tube, you will notice a seal inside the water pump housing. That seal is what the copper pipe from the water outlet valve feeds into and creates a seal.
      The plastic white tube itself is only there to help you guide the copper pipe into that white plastic tube which in return ensures that the copper pipe feeds directly into the seal inside water pump housing.
      Once copper pipe has made its way into the seal, the plastic tube becomes irrelevant however impossible to remove until the next servicing event.
      Hope this help. 😎👍

      @@DIYwithMichaelBorders I believe I've messed up. I rebuilt my lower impeller all brand new. I followed along with your video. Thank you for that. However, I was fighting getting the lower stern drive back up into the upper. I was using ratchet straps to help stabilize it and ratchet up as I was lining everything up. However, the little spline in the front that engages the gears and impeller, I dont know which way to turn that. My prop is free wheel spinning, and I cant turn the large shaft to line up the splines. And i dont know what direction is needed to turn the small spline shaft. I wish I could take pictures and post here to show you what I'm talking about. Could you call me on my cellphone possibly? My email is lwaldenjr@gmail.com. if you can email me, I will send you my cell phone number. I'm seriously needing a bit of direction on this. I dont know anyone personally with a boat. Lol. So I've got no one to turn to for a bit of guidance. Let me know. Thanks
