Interviews Mountain City and Trade TN Recorded on October 9 &10 about 2 Weeks After Helene

- This is footage from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the northeastern most county of Tennessee, Johnson County. This is a copulation of interviews from our first visit with survivors and the local pastors and officials caring for those affected by the floods, Powe outages, property loss, and loss of live. This area is poor and sparsely populated. The news isn't covering it and the politicians aren't visiting. Homes are gone, churches were washed away, roads are gone and homes are cut off. Many people are still without power. There are families living in tents and the harsh mountain winter is coming.
The people of Johnson County are strong determined folks, who are doing everything they can to help one another. Every farmer with a tractor was out helping. Every neighbor with a chainsaw was cutting the endless downed trees. The heavy equipment you saw toward the end of the video belongs to a local construction company. They have been running nonstop repairing washed out roads so their neighbors could get out and lineman could get in to restore power. We passed crew after crew of lineman. We were told that the trees were cleared from the roads so all this work could start by Team Rubicon, a veteran lead humanitarian organization and the US Forest Service. A portion of The Cherokee National Forest is in Johnson County. The campgrounds, picnic areas, roads and especially the streams and rivers inside the National Forest have all been damaged in both Tennessee and North Carolina.
We and I mean all of us together are going to do what we can to help those survived by the disaster of Hurricane Helene. You are their hope. All of the money sent to The Hillbilly Kitchen PayPal is going towards housing for survivors who have lost their homes and materials to repair damaged homes so they can be moved back into. Workers are now wanted and needed. The churches in this video are direct contacts, if you would like to go help. They especially need people with trucks and trailers to haul away debris, evocation equipment even tractors with buckets, specialty tradesman like plumbers, electricians, drywallers, HVAC tech, foundation specialists especially for mobile homes, landscapers, roofers, pavers with dump trucks....
Good affordable travel trailers are needed for emergency shelter for those who have lost their homes. Temperatures have already dropped below freezing and the Red Cross has closed the Emergency shelter. I watched a video today of a guy who offered his large event space to FEMA to use as a staging place. As businesses brought pallets of drinks, etc, in, FEMA said it didn't meet their standards and it all had to be thrown away. It was "Prime" drink - I don't know what it is, but it is for sale everywhere. THEN, FEMA took over the building, broke the guys lease and gave him 30 days to get out! That was his business - his employment! FEMA is not a good agency if they can do this without caring at all. Another video showed a guy who just wanted to volunteer and someone told him to leave, they don't need help. (FEMA again?? I don't know.) I think it is terrible that they are standing in the way of help and volunteers. I'm sure some of the volunteers could use a break!

You know Becky if i had a helicopter I'd go back and forth over the whole areas, section by section, assess needs, even drop down to individuals and towns and list the needs and names of missing. Yup..it would take time and money, but it would be an organized assessment........oh Becky....just me....I'm an organizer.

I'm thankful Becky that you chose Mountain City to visit with this help. We almost moved there in 2022, but God closed those doors at the last minute with a financial setback that felt catastrophic to us (but is now put into perspective, my goodness). But that place still has a big part of our hearts (and we may yet wind up living there, God willing). We had been looking for news centered on that tip of TN, but hadn't found much. Been praying though, and will continue to pray.
