I started keto mid November-2019-have lost 40 lbs (now mid March 2020), but more importantly my blood glucose A1c went down from 7.7 to 5.3. I went off the metformin when I started keto- my doctor has been very supportive.
Stephen Phinney is an incredible blessing to humanity. I've seen the benefits that he talks about over the past 4 years. While I was getting close to pre-diabetes (fasting glucose at 100), when I gave up all grains, sugars, starchy vegetables, and eventually all seed oils, I saw a dramatic improvement in blood markers and weight: I lost 30 pounds (down to 165) Hba1-c (5.6), triglycerides 65, HDL 76, and HOMA-IR of 0.3 (fasting insulin of 1.4, fasting glucose of 93). I'm now lighter and feel more alert -not smarter, just more with it at age 70.
Pickled foods work for me. When I eat the wrong thing and have a flare up, a pickled veg or some kimchi does the trick without the rebound effect of antacids. Just a bite will do the trick. It works by introducing healthy gut bacteria. That's how I got off Omeprazole. I think fermented foods work even better than the drug.

Dr. Phinney, I have been on a Keto way of eating for about 8 months and have lost 40 lbs. My question is about lipomas. I have a lot of under the skin, not noticeable, but palpable, of my midriff. Im a UK based Type 1,diabetic and Ive adopted the low carb management approach for the past 9 months. I had to go it alone because my old-school physician had no idea what to advise. The idea of expert medical support during such changes of diet and lifestyle is laudable however it is unrealistic in the UK at least. The patients have to educate themselves (possible, thanks to channel s like yours) and take ownership. After a while, the Type 1 Diabetic becomes the expert. Not the general practitioner.
I have gone to a doctor who has me on multiple drugs for diabetes ( metformin and glimepiride), for high triglycerides ( Fenofibrate ) ,for low thyroid ( Levothyroxine) and on a blood pressure drug ( Amlodipine ) . I stopped taking statins and have a substitute drug for the Metformin that I had been taking. My blood chemistry done by a lab revealed a cholesterol level of 196, blood sugar of 256, and an A1C level of 8.3. I have an appointment with my doctor this Friday and plan to tell him about my intermittent fasting and plans to go on a Ketogenic diet ( which I have actually started about 2 weeks ago ) and my intent to get off of several of these drugs because of side effects. My investigation indicates that statins are only good for a class of patients that have had cardiac issues and I have none. I am convinced that I should be on far fewer drugs and by being on a Ketogenic diet I will see some positive changes without drugs

To Virta Health, do you guys have any of the studies cited in these videos linked on your website? If so, that would make it easier for those wanting to go over the studies.
On a few of his videos, Dr. Phinney mentions guys really liking protein and meat, as if women do not. From my observations, a lot of women enjoy meat, and many enjoy a lot of it. Especially the juicy, flavorful meats from heritage breeds raised naturally on pasture. Some women have swallowed the vegetarian propoganda, like Lierre Smith, who wrote 'The Vegetarian Myth', and Nina Teicholtz, who wrote 'Big Fat Surprise'. Others have been told that carbs, even sugar, is better for them than meat. Most are unaware that there is a lot ore total far and saturated fat in the oily fish species we are encouraged to eat than there is in an equal amount of steak. th-cam.com/video/lntwufwQwoQ/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/wdznfiWvGq0/w-d-xo.html

This study is finally going to do it; it’s going to be far too difficult for the naysayers, both within and without the medical/academic community, to ignore the evidence that WFKT can cure diabetes. It may take quite a while for it to become standard of care simply because of the general stubbornness of many practitioners in nutrition, but it seems like this study is bound to tip the scales.

This will take a bit of effort like all things but you can get special scales that are able to measure not just your weight but also your fat percentage and metabolism then you can also get one of those lil blood level kits and with a quick prick of your finger you can test that. Now that u have the tools basically you can research like watching these videos, other videos and articles and work out what diet percentages work for you

I have been following the KETO diet with 16/8 IF for a month now. Down 11 lbs, clothes getting loose, good energy, not sluggish after meals, not hungry during fast, and basically feel great. Normally only eat 2 meals between noon and 6ish. Yesterday did 23/1 with only one meal. For the last 4 to 5 days I have noticed that about 4 hours after the last meal I feel almost like I have a buzz from drinking alcohol. Is that normal?

I have a long history of overeating. I have been following a ketogencic diet for over two years and I have lost almost 100lbs but I have had to severly resstrict my caloric intake to achieve that. I have got used to the reduced volume of food and the hunger is no where near as bad as when I first started but I still do not feel entirely satiated when I eat. How do I eat to satiety without retricting my calories or overeating?
On Ketogenic diet my LDL skyrocketed. From 130 to 230. HDL went from 40 to 60 TG went from 220 to 57. Weight loss from 210 lbs. to 174. A1C remained basically unchanged, 5.7. Effect on blood pressure? Very good to say the least. Total time on the diet 4 months. Now how do I feel about the diet? I totally love the taste of meat, cheese, eggs, nuts.. And how do I actually feel after eating it? Great. The thing is, I also totally like rice. How do I feel after eating it? Bloated. Morality wise? Questionable feeling about killing sheep and goats and eating them.
I have fh,is it safe for me to go on a keto diet? I live in the uk, advice is always a low fat diet.i can't tolerate statins, and dont want to try stronger drugs. Advice welcome.
What about a very thin person with type 2 diabetes.. that actually needs to gain weight and mussel ???? Can they do the ketogenic diet or way of eating?

I am a relatively healthy 16 year old who still growing but I'm worried that a ketogenic diet may stunt my growth, so should I wait until I'm fully developed before starting a ketogenic diet?
So your liver produces bile, which helps you digest fat, and the gallbladder is the place your liver stores bile. When you eat foods that contain fat, your body senses it and releases bile to help you absorb it. Since your liver produces the bile and your gallbladder acts as a reservoir, you can still make the bile you need to digest fat. Virta currently has several patients like this who are doing just fine. There can be an adjustment period when increasing fat intake, since your liver needs to make more bile to digest more fat.
Effective short term weight loss program....curious why Dr Phinney never gets around to addressing the dramatic increase in all cause mortality associated with the diet?
Jeff Morgan In order to better address your question, what study are you referring to that demonstrates increased mortality on a well formulated ketogenic diet?
@@VirtaHealth around 1:44 you say that the weight loss in the high carbohydrate group is half that of the keto group. However when looking at the graph, the opposite seems trough. He said less than 5% calories from carbohydrates. If we pick 1200 cal/day as an average, 5% =60 calories. One average apple has around 70 cal and 20 g carbs. It turns to me that it is extremely difficult to get so little as 5% calories from carbohydrates. I am aware that we are talking about net carbs, but still 5% looks to me to ambitious.

Dr. Phinney, what are your cholesterol and LDL numbers? Just wondering. Dr. phinney, I’m a fitness instructor. 38 years, now. My blood work was terrible on a keto diet. I now have RA and Hashimotos. I was drinking minerals in my water just not to cramp. That is not normal. My heart rate during a cycle workout 85% of my max was 172-176. When I would get into ketosis, my heart rate would rise to 181 for a few days. . Now I’m eating plant based whole food to reduce inflammation from all the healthy fat I ate for 2 years. I’m doing the same workouts and my heart rate peaks at 163-166. So my heart loves plants. I’m hoping to be pain free from eating fruit, veggie, legumes and grains. I feel great. Sleeping deeper. Weight is the same. Feel healthier. Why do keto people focuse on macros? I now just eat real food, but plants only.
Keto is real food. Those wanting powders, bars and other convenience foods are not. It sounds like your electrolytes were too low, it's a common issue. It amplifies that problem when sweating. Heavy exercise is not recommended when switching fuel sources.
dana102083 Dana. I am a fitness coach. I know electrolytes. I was drinking Himalayan pink salt, magnesium, potassium. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. I NEVER CRAMP NOW. I never cramped in my life UNTIL I stayed in ketosis for 2 years. Just got blood work past week. Have you gotten blood work lately??? My glucose eating ONLY plants is 66. What’s yours??? My cholesterol has dropped 80 points. What’s yours? My 85% of max heart rate during HIIT has dropped 6 more beats. 172 to now 160.Do you know your heart rate? What color is your food? BROWN?? Mine is colorful. How many times per day do you poo? Plant people go 2-3 x per day. Dr. Phinney is NOT a medical diet. Blood work DOES MATTER🍇🌽🥬🥝AND what is your blood ph??? Mine is ALKALINE!!! GO PLANTS!!!
MaryLovesGlass Dear Mary, ketosis is for a very short period of time. 5-7 days max. Have you had your blood work done? The proof is in the pudding. Plants will win in the end!!!!🥝🥦🌽🍌🥬🍇🥒🍓

My migraines went into complete remission! 7 months no migraine! This is drastic as I experienced 1 per week and had to have FMLA in order to miss work as my migraines were severe and lasted 8 to 12 hours.
Kyle Walker this gives me hope! I am on the fence about doing keto, but my migraines is a big reason I am looking hard into this life style
I'm surprised that there's not at least a million views on this guy's videos. This is so informative and much more accurate as well as credible than a bunch of other videos I saw. Excellent Doctor. A rarity of his kind. I want to know what this well formed Ketogenic Diet is so I can jump on it immediately. *SIGHhHhh* Hopefully that secret is in some of his videos.
I started keto mid November-2019-have lost 40 lbs (now mid March 2020), but more importantly my blood glucose A1c went down from 7.7 to 5.3. I went off the metformin when I started keto- my doctor has been very supportive.
How is Canola Oil good source of fat? I thought it was pretty bad for you with higher levels of omega 6s. Please see the image at 5:27.
I’m just so excited to change habits and live a healthier life . And love how clear and practical the explanations are . Thank you
Hooray ! For a doctor who dared to question and research . We will all benefit . Thank you blessings in abundance to you and your team dr Pinney
I'm now lighter and feel more alert -not smarter, just more with it at age 70.
eating keto for a year has corrected all my issues but GERD. & I'm tapering off omeprazole now & hoping to quit it too.
Try potato extract. It has some enzimes that can kill that.
Sergio Castro i dont really know about keto ive done very little research in the first video he said to eat vegetables but not starchy vegetables. Isnt potato starchy?
My GERD resolved first.
I had the same issue. Apple cider vinegar is what got me off my Omeprazole.
A must watch for any doctor concerned about eating a ketogenic diet, saturated fat. They often believe eating saturated fat is dangerous but those were also eating high carbohydrates. Great presentation of the science/ studies.

I Pray that my expression of Thankfully comes through this text on how very very grateful I am for you posting this TH-cam of this valuable information about Ketosis in such a complete and understanding way that is so outstanding. Thanks ever so much. If
You’ve written book or you know somebody that has this I DepT info please let me know.
Thank you Pamela! Have you read The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Drs. Phinney and Volek?
@@VirtaHealth I suggest you look up Dr Jason Fung. He has alot of details on this diet available on youtube and he has written amazing books on the subject. The obesity code and the diabetes code books he has, is often mentioned.
Yes! This is a sustainable "diet"! (lifestyle) Thanks for this very clear presentation!
So glad you found it helpful!
The key for the line graph in figure titled Rethinking Sodium Guidelines at 1:38 has reversed labels for LFD and LCD.
at 2:17 the slide is titled "Rethinking Sodium...." but the talk is about how much water plays a role in the weight loss
Day 3 and already un ketosis. I've done keto a couple times in the past and my body adapts to it really well.. now if I can get over these carb and sugar addictions and remain keto for a good while
I believe canola is a man made processed crap I’ll never ever add to my life. Ever. Other than that exceptional video. Keep up the good work.
When will physicians learn this in medical school!
Jennifer S my wife is a physician in Africa and they are prescribing Keto in Kenya
Jay Whoisit In the US they just give you a prescription. 😞
Jennifer S my wife encounters diabetes and obesity on a daily basis in her practice. She explains that Africans traditional food is basically between paleo and ketogenic, however cheap carbs, mainly maize porridge,, introduced by the whites are now the staple foods. It's killing Africans. Her advice is to eat like your grandparents did.
It will be a ten minute class thrown in between a half day class on how to jump into a treatment room, say your name and jump back out so that you can collect a thousand bucks and a four hour class on forest removal through billing systems in America.
Very valuable information thanks .Is it possible to provide a list of vegetarian and dairy food that can be eaten in this diet system
Dr. Phinney, I have been on a Keto way of eating for about 8 months and have lost 40 lbs. My question is about lipomas. I have a lot of under the skin, not noticeable, but palpable, of my midriff. Is it possible that a Ketogenic way of eating can eliminate these lipomas or am I destined to have them no matter how much weight I lose? I also do Intermittent Fasting along with my Keto way of eating.
1. At minute 1:32. The labels on the scatter graph appear to be reversed. The blue filled circles should be LCD. No?
2. At minute 7:10. The graph is labeled "Fat Oxidation vs. Exercise intensity" but the vertical axis shows fat oxidation RATE and the horizontal axis shows DURATION, not intensity.
Excellent video!
Excellent, thanks Doc
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thank you, Dr Phinney!! Bravo!
I was surprised to see canola oil on the best fat sources slide?
Dr. Phinney wrote more about his rationale on canola oil here: blog.virtahealth.com/canola-oil-keto/
I've heard that canola oil by itself is good, but the majority of canola oil in the U.S. is GMO.
I guess canola oil being GMO is the issue.
Kirifuda no, GMO is not an issue.
@@MikeEnRegalia canola oil is Poisson its made of rapessed which is Poisson.

Finally, someone who actually knows the science! So tired of one-size-fits-all jocks writing dietary advice! Thanks for presenting the dangers of ketosis for diabetics and those with kidney insufficiency, et cetera. So tired of explaining to my kids that their Paleo or all- meat diet might be survivable for them in their 20s, but isn't necessarily safe or appropriate for their 60 - something parents!
Dr. Phinney, will one of the other videos address the affects of ketosis on kidney function and diseases?
Good question
What exactly does one eat on a "well formulated keto diet?"
Eggs, nuts, meat, & CHEESE! 😅
See videos by Dr Sten Ekberg for tons of information on what to eat to find what works for you between low carb and healthy ketosis, according to your health needs.
This is the most informative video abt Ketogenic diet. Thank you Dr. Phinney for your dedicated research. I have a lot fats in my mid section, i need to jump into Keto. I wonder what a properly formed keto is?

No docs in the Greater Philadelphia area that are educated in this. One doc I went to who is listed as keto wanted to add meds not take them away. Olympia I think the once a week shot is called. Even though I am pre-diabetic not diabetic.

What is a well formulated keto diet ?
On a few of his videos, Dr. Phinney mentions guys really liking protein and meat, as if women do not. From my observations, a lot of women enjoy meat, and many enjoy a lot of it. Especially the juicy, flavorful meats from heritage breeds raised naturally on pasture.
Some women have swallowed the vegetarian propoganda, like Lierre Smith, who wrote 'The Vegetarian Myth', and Nina Teicholtz, who wrote 'Big Fat Surprise'.
Others have been told that carbs, even sugar, is better for them than meat.
Most are unaware that there is a lot ore total far and saturated fat in the oily fish species we are encouraged to eat than there is in an equal amount of steak. th-cam.com/video/lntwufwQwoQ/w-d-xo.html

What's wrong with high protein when in ketosis?
Do you think the sensitivity primarily came from the keto diet or the overall weight-loss due to a now restricted calorie intake?
i am living in germany , do u got any idea how hard it is to find the "doc" that has some kind of clue ? .. :-( nearly impossible
Most doctors in the US are not taught this either!

I'm new, what about sugar and sugar substitutes?
We recommend avoiding sugar as this will disrupt ketosis. You can learn more about sugar substitutes by going to our blog: blog.virtahealth.com/keto-diet-artificial-sweeteners-sugar-substitutes/
Keto has been shown to be risky in numerous studies, especially without doctor supervision. The Agoge diet was the only diet that helped me lose that stubborn fat without hurting my body.
Agoge diet works great, I've been using it for about 3
Which studies?
Trolls
I'm confused by the graph at 1.36 minutes into the talk. The blue plot seems to showing a larger loss than the white plot. But the blue plot is labeled LFD. This is also opposite to the chart on the right. Am I misinterpreting something.
This study is finally going to do it; it’s going to be far too difficult for the naysayers, both within and without the medical/academic community, to ignore the evidence that WFKT can cure diabetes. It may take quite a while for it to become standard of care simply because of the general stubbornness of many practitioners in nutrition, but it seems like this study is bound to tip the scales.
rtmordecai1 you'd think so, but too many love their return customers and they can blame the patient.

I am 60. Have been trying keto for many months. I can’t seem to stay in ketosis. Always out in the mornings. I can’t drop my weight below 150 no matter what I do. I also do IF and exercise in the morning both strength and cardio . I am getting very discouraged
Research buteyko breathing method. Hyperventilation can induce cortisol more prominent in mornings which can explain your situation. Long topic amazing benefits
Dr Stephan can you please define "moderate protein" and how is it determined. How many grammes is appropriate for height/weight/gender. Thank you.
So if you can’t find a dr that will work with you, what do you do ?
there are more coming out with similar finds as this doctor
I'm super confused! 😒... How do I take on this change if I can't find a DOCTOR whom can help me with what's healthy for me and what fat to partake in. I need a starting point. Anyone have advice on channels with meals with macros. I think if I had macros with meals to try I could really be successful.
This will take a bit of effort like all things but you can get special scales that are able to measure not just your weight but also your fat percentage and metabolism then you can also get one of those lil blood level kits and with a quick prick of your finger you can test that. Now that u have the tools basically you can research like watching these videos, other videos and articles and work out what diet percentages work for you
Check out Thomas Keto on youtube, Good luck
Dr. Berg
We need more studies on fat adaptation and lower dietary fat ingestion when bodily fat or BMI are already high. Fat macros are not the goal.
Have you done any studies on people with hyperlipidemia? I have 3 children with this condition and the oldest can’t tolerate statins. They are talking now about washing his blood. He already has some blockage in his neck artery.
Many people report having reduced alcohol tolerance when in nutritional ketosis. We recommend no more than 1-2 drinks per day or less.
Just don’t drink alcohol is poison

Isn't ketogenic diet actually increase ldl level in the blood, instead of decrease? There are lots of videos on TH-cam clarifying that. High ldl level in ketogenic diet is actually a good thing
This is very true. I experienced that
I had Occular Auora Migraines since I was in my 20s. As I got older, I was getting once a week. After 3 months on the Carnivore diet, I haven't had one so far. I even forgot about them. 🤞
I have lost weight and gained muscle going to the gym. I have never been overweight.
I blame the migraines on carbs and seed oils. Basically the american diet.
Does somebody know with facts, how much grams of protein per pound of weight do you need in order to get muscle growth into ketogenic diet?
Check out the chart here! blog.virtahealth.com/how-much-protein-on-keto/
Beor Beorian And what is the fact? Are you measuring your skeletal muscle lbs via an InBody type scale or similar?
I have a long history of overeating. I have been following a ketogencic diet for over two years and I have lost almost 100lbs but I have had to severly resstrict my caloric intake to achieve that. I have got used to the reduced volume of food and the hunger is no where near as bad as when I first started but I still do not feel entirely satiated when I eat. How do I eat to satiety without retricting my calories or overeating?
I had/have the same issue. I added more fat & very little problem with hunger now. Good luck.
On Ketogenic diet my LDL skyrocketed. From 130 to 230.
HDL went from 40 to 60
TG went from 220 to 57.
Same out come for me. Feel amazing
The only thing I disagree with in this vid is the listing of canola oil as a healthy fat.
I have fh,is it safe for me to go on a keto diet? I live in the uk, advice is always a low fat diet.i can't tolerate statins, and dont want to try stronger drugs. Advice welcome.
Look up Dr Unwin, a UK doctor.
What about a very thin person with type 2 diabetes.. that actually needs to gain weight and mussel ???? Can they do the ketogenic diet or way of eating?
Yup! We have a piece here that outlines weight maintenance on a ketogenic diet: blog.virtahealth.com/top-keto-mistakes/

I am a relatively healthy 16 year old who still growing but I'm worried that a ketogenic diet may stunt my growth, so should I wait until I'm fully developed before starting a ketogenic diet?
Perhaps you could simply stick to a healthy (wholegrain) carb/low sugar diet for now, and then transit to keto as you grow older?

Calories in calories out.
What if you don’t have a gall bladder? I feel,ok, but I worry what I am doing to all my other organs with such a high fat diet.

No need to hurt yourself with keto. It is just a matter of calories in, calories out. Following a structured and diverse diet like the Agoge diet helps a great deal though.
Why would anyone get hurt from keto?
GO PLANTS!!!
loooool, gtfo@@h.l.4579
H. L. Bwhahahaha, you still don’t get it. But whatever.
MaryLovesGlass Dear Mary, ketosis is for a very short period of time. 5-7 days max. Have you had your blood work done? The proof is in the pudding. Plants will win in the end!!!!🥝🥦🌽🍌🥬🍇🥒🍓
