I am 71 years old, just started 18/6 in mid-February, cut out sugar and very limited carbo intake. I am an avid cyclist doing about 50 miles twice a week, additionally I do rowing machine and stationary bike on the days I am not cycling outside. My weight dropped unintentionally from 162 lbs to 150, I am still cycling with the same routine. Here’s the thing, during the days I go cycling without stopping for lunch I don’t feel hungry, instead I feel a continuous supply of energy from within. What a great discovery of ketone power and intermittent fasting!

Dear Dr Phinney, I practiced Keto after watching videos from Dr Berg, Dr Fung and others. I did not have the privilege of meeting any doctor who could help me apart from prescribing more and more medications. By just watching and following those Keto videos I lost 15kg and 5 inches of my waist. I agree with you that it is not as simple as no sugar no carb diet but there is no other way but through self experimentation and making improvements because most mainstream medical practitioners are of no help at all.

@@AlbaVirus01 - Yes, Rudolp Diesel designed the engine named after him to run on peanut oil in the late 1800s. Back then, seed oils were used in industry. In 1913 he 'disappeared' off a ship. Supposedly he committed suicide, even though he was on his way to a business meeting - to discuss the potential used of his engine by the British. He had refused to give the German military exclusive rights to use his engine.
This is probably still the best use of seed oils - corn oil, soybean oil, rapeseed and canola oil, etc as well as peanut oil. A few years ago, a farmer in Penn. was reported to have produced enough oil, which was pressed on the farm, from a 2 acre plot of canola or rapeseed oil to run his tractors and heat the farm machinery workshop for a year. (Canola is a type of rapeseed bred with reduced levels of certain toxins to make it 'safe' for human consumption.) in warmer climates, peanuts are a better choice. As a legume, they add nitrogen to the soil. After the oil has been pressed from the peanuts, the meal is excellent food for hogs and their pigs.

@@Jefferdaughter I agree, we should be burning these seed oils in our vehicles. We can also make ethanol to run the gasoline engines. I'm not a global warmer and don't buy into the theory that Co2 is pollution that causes global warming. I just think we should convert over to using ethanol and seed oils so that we can have cheaper fuel. All of these soybean farmers that are dependent on China to buy their beans, could start raising other crops that could be sold in the US to make ethanol and seed oils such as the rapeseed you talked about.

Stephen you must be aware the majority of us started this without the help of any doctor, especially up here in Canada where most are idiots when it comes to nutrients and how they are used by the body or that metabolism is controlled by hormones. I love this way of life. I have read both your books along with many others and have enough medical knowledge to throw out the miss information and believe me there are so few that know what they are talking about. I also heard you speak in San Diego. I, along with so many others had no other choice to reverse our metabolic syndrome but take on this lifestyle on our own. When I started 2 years ago, I was told I was "going to die". I had no support from dieticians or doctors up here in Canada. My fatty liver is no longer, my HbA1c went from 5.7 to 5.1, I no longer require a C-Pap machines, I no longer have severe edema (it left in about one week), my lipids all corrected, my CRP dropped from 3.0 to .07, my weight went from 200 pounds to 127 (5 foot 4 inches) that I don't do anything to control besides controlling carbs. I eat to satisfaction and only eat when hungry. Of all the things I am so glad are gone is hunger. As my insulin resistance was so bad, I obviously had elevated insulin levels and that drives this constant hunger. I had difficulty focusing during the day as I was always seeking or thinking about food. Respect your insulin and glycogon is what I say.

Giving up bread and fruit is going to be tough since it is such an easy go to for breakfast and lunches. I already meal plan, don't eat alot of dairy, we eat a fair amount of vegetables. Same in Germany. The main issue here is the connection or synergy between medicine and nutrition. I have a diabetologist, who knows nothing about nutrition and a nutritionist who knows nothing about type 1 diabetes.
The diabetologist tells me to make sure to reduce my insulin injections, when ketosis sets in, but doesn't know by how much
The nutritionist does not have a clue about net carbs and also keeps suggesting foods and recipes that would easily amount to 170 grams of carbs per day.
I would love to have supervision, if there were ANY physicians or nutritionists who actually knew about LCHF (Keto) in Germany. For now, I will just continue to read and follow the latest medical research as well as trust in the advice of people like Dr. Phinney.

I have lost 22 lb and feel great and eat less in just a month. All I did is reducing my carbs from 200+ gr a day to less than 80 gr. And I started to fast using 8/16 formula than I fasted 24h and 40h.
I was able to fast with absolutely no problem because I don't crave sugar anymore. I can say with confidence that I am out of sugar addiction. My blood pressure went down to normal after being prescribed medication that I never accepted to take.
I used to run a lot, half marathons and full marathons but was running on carbohydrates. As soon as I slowed my exercising due to injuries I gained a lot of weight and went back to square one.
I think my body is now adapted to ketones as I just did 48 h fasting and feel great.
I will never go back to carbs again. I am refining my diet by listening to my body. This is life-changing information.
Thank you, Dr. Stephen, for being part of this scientific movement. Our health system is not working. If I followed what was prescribed to me, I would have a miserable life without a doubt.

As a cyclist and fairly new keto adaptor, I have always had a back up carb snack lurking in back pocket just incase, I found your advice and knowledge very encouraging, thank you.

He refuses to recognize that keto pretty much saved my life and helped my liver make a full recovery. I manage just fine by watching the videos and reading the books you and Jeff put out - you both have given out all the info i needed to get through some tough times.

Dr. Phinney, thank you for taking the time to produce this video which is extremely informative and helpful. I'd like to add, after living a ketogenic lifestyle for the past six months and losing 30 lbs, any symptoms of arthritis and my IBS symptoms, is that avocados are an excellent source of the fats you reference. I also supplement my daily intake of fats with MCT oil if I find I'm short after dinner. And lastly, I find the Carb Manager app invaluable in calculating the fat/carb/protein components of the foods I eat. I struggled with keeping to the ratios you suggest before I found it.

Stage 4 high grade serous carcinoma ovarian cancer for 2 half years. Did two rounds of chemos with 3 relapses. The last time the cancer returned with normal diet my ca125 blood markers climbed over 100 points in 2 weeks. The second relapse on keto they went up only 46 points in 6 weeks. My oncologist put me on letrozole after this ... a hormone blocker and now with fasting and keto my cancer markers have regressed from 105 to 67 ca125. I'm a fan of keto. Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your cancer. Google "Joe Tippen's protocol". Joe is a guy from Oklahoma that was all over the local news a few years ago, because he cured his stage four lung cancer with fenbendazole dog wormer. This cure is being suppressed by big pharma and the billion dollar chemo industry. The cure was actually an accidental discovery. Scientists were using mice for cancer research and gave the mice fenbendazole to control the parasites. Soon they noticed that the mice were being cured of their cancer after being given fenbendazole. Good luck and God Bless.

As people who regularly test their blood glucose levels and have compared with others doing the same already know, individual responses to the same amount of a particular food can vary pretty significantly. This is also true for responses to protein. However, generally speaking, protein does not trigger insulin levels to the same degree that sugar, high-sugar fruits (like bananas), or refined starches (like pasta) does.
Atkins was misunderstood as recommending a high protein diet. We forget, or never knew, how much more fat all the meats contained when he wrote his book! Skinless chicken was unheard of, and even pieces came with the bone. Pork was juice and had FAT. Beef was well-marbled, and the fat was not all trimmed off the steaks. Lamb was more commonly enjoyed, and lamb is a rich (fatty) meat, too.

I am following the many, many videos of Dr Eric Berg and they are "small chunk" ketogenic trainings that have helped me to do this in a healthy way. My motivation is because I was insulin resistent. This keto diet is being driven by regular people because the medical fraternity and even dieticians are still sitting back waiting for ???? But there is a Functional Medicine Doctor who can. Dr Dunn. In Downingtown pa if you want all the proper testing done and understanding of the data explained. But save your money. Just get healthy. Functional Medicine doctors are not coved by insurance. I took my son to one dr Molders and it cost me 1000.00 out of pocket. But the insurance company would pay for dangerous mind altering drugs and psychological dr visits. The Psychologist can prescribe drugs and not have a PHD in biochemistry. Only one counselor told me to take my son off all grains and sugars. And I did. And it WORKS!
