      Yeah, ASRock phantom is usually very good. Though it is sold out right now, so this MSI tomahawk board was actually even better 😮 I found out. I will also be building on the AMD Ryzen processor for the first time as the Intel ultra processor is falling behind in benchmarks. New PC for 2025 🎉

    The lack of onboard RGB was one of the things that drew me to this board. My AIO has no lights, my fans have no lights and the RAM I plan to buy have no RGB. Blacked out and minimal is what I am going for.

    This will be the new home of my 9800x3d.. Got the parts.. now I only need to find the time to set it up.
    Reading in the forum of MSI there is some early adopter trouble I guess.. But I counted on that.
    What I am missing on these reviews is an overview of the BIOS menus and how they are set up - to give you some feedback. The rest of the review was very solid.

    • @TheOzembuch
      @TheOzembuch หลายเดือนก่อน

      What memory did you get for this mobo? I'm looking at the same setup and deciding on what to get. My ideal setup would be 2 sticks 64gb total, something that could run up to 8000 which this mobo can handle. But I also don't see many options on the approved list from MSI.

    • @eQui253
      @eQui253 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @TheOzembuch I don't see any benefits of such mt/s rates. Since the controller of the infinity f. goes from 1:1 to 1:2 at a certain point in the 6200-6400 range.
      AMDs x3d CPUs don't benefit that much from memory speed .. I'd go for good latency timings because that's what benefits the most if we are talking gaming.
      Short answer I bought Kingston fury beasts 6000mt/s cl30. Depending on your silicone lottery u could go with 6400 mt/s cl 32 and still go 1:1 ratio.. but that could be unstable.
      I use the system to game, not to hunt benchmark numbers so I took the safe route. If u go with higher rates u get diminishing returns for ur money and u increase the chances of an unstable system.. not worth it for me.
      Also I use a 64gb kit. AMD on Am5 is known for trouble if u use all 4 ram banks. So take 2 and if u don't do any professional workload stuff 64gb is more than enough.

    • @TheOzembuch
      @TheOzembuch หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@eQui253 Thanks for quick reply. I tend to agree with you, the only reason for faster memory was purely on experimental side, just to see what it can do. But, speaking of being on the safe side, what do you think of this kit? Silicon Power DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) Zenith 6000MT/s (PC5-48000) 288-pin CL30 1.35V . Seems like similar to what you have picked, for little less $$.

    • @eQui253
      @eQui253 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheOzembuch personally I don't have any experience with the brand, but talking numbers this kit seems fine. If u get a good price go for it.
      Always run a memtest86 at the first day after your setup is done. So u can find defective ram chips from the get go.

    Just a quick note for anyone looking to maximize the USB4/M2_2 switch with a Samsung 990 EVO or EVO Plus, the only drives currently available that can work both in PCIE4x4 as well as PCIE5x2. By maximizing I mean having USB4 functional as well as use M2_2 at maximum bandwidth.
    As of BIOS version 7E51v1A1A, with the 990 EVO Plus in M2_2, setting the switch to AUTO will result in the USB4 being disabled and M2_2 set to PCIE4x4. It's not enough to set the split manually so that each get x2 lanes, doing so will result the Samsung drive working in PCIE4x2 with degraded performance. You have to both set the switch to give USB4 and M2_2 x2 lanes each AND set the M2_2 to be Gen 5 in the BIOS for this combo to work at maximum bandwidth for both peripherals.
    One other gripe that I have is that M2_3 only has two lanes, which it shares with the PCIE3 slot. The switch in the BIOS does not allow the PCIE3 slot to be disabled and direct all lanes to M2_3. You can however disable M2_3 and direct all 4 lanes to PCIE3. So if you want to use all 4 lanes available for a M2 drive, you'll have to do so using a M2/PCIE card in PCIE3.
    Despite these compromises, the Tomahawk is by far the most interesting current generation AM5 board in this price range and I'm glad that MSI decided to get back to innovating. Their previous offerings for X670/B650 felt lacking with below average VRMs and almost no USB4 offerings.

    Hi Laurent,
    After 12 years, my old PC system (AM3+ with an FX CPU) died this August. It took me a lot of time to compare all the necessary components for the new build. Just when I thought I had finally found my new system (B650 motherboard, etc.) and was about to order the parts online, your video popped up on TH-cam. Since I’m building an entirely new system, I changed my decision and ordered the MSI X870 Tomahawk (with an AMD R9 7900X and DDR5 6000 CL30). I think my new system will more than meet my needs 😃.
    Thanks for the helpful video that guided my purchase decision 👍.

      USB 40Gbps Type-C ports on the back panel and M2_2 slot share PCIe 5.0 x4 bandwidth. Both run at PCIe 5.0 x2 when a device is installed in the M2_2 slot. You can switch M2_2 to PCIe 5.0 x4 in the BIOS, but this will disable the USB 40Gbps Type-C ports

    I really wish we could get a redesign on these MBs to NOT hide the M.2s underneath the GPU. I don't wanna have to keep ripping out my GPU just to get at them. Maybe only way is with an E-ATX form factor...

    I always liked your reviews. They are very thorough when it comes to the features of the motherboards and is greatly appreciated. Having said that, have you considered adding any type of benchmarking to your reviews? On paper, a mobo can be great and have all the features and cooling, VRMs, etc, but may choke under load, even from a reputable brand. I've noticed for example watching mobo round-ups from Hardware Unboxed, that even "premium" brands like Asus have been putting out mediocre (and overpriced) boards and lower tier companies like ASRock have improved the last couple of gens. So yeah, it would be helpful to get your opinion on how these boards perform, in addition to their features.

    Great review! - The mainboard producers should change their mind, and bring us boards with four Gen5 x4 M.2 slots, that can be.throttled down to x2 and x1, switched off or redirected to "chipset", iot raise the bandwidth for the Gen 5 PCIe slots to x8 or even x16..This way, up to four Gen5 x4 M.2 drives could become the new norm immediately!!!

(Don't have a link) It was shown in a video testing that the VRM delivers ±75% of their rating at best or lower (±60Amps) but could in theory do 80Amps even if they never do it. The total bandwidth is wrong (I think I heard 45 in total). Because the chipset is usually overwhelmed reducing your bandwidth. And even if you wouldn't have any speed reduction. The speed was a bit slower than advertised. (I think Hardware Unboxed did a good job for MB/s speed of USB, just in case, yes I know MB and Mb isn't the same but doesn't match the ÷8 ratio).

      @@Laurentschoice Oh so you ''destroyed'' Tomahawk boards in your last reviews so you have to offset it with this one to not get MSI angry 😂. Jokes aside you still dodge the point . Your argument is it's better than X670 and while it is true that it is technically better ( how could it not be better otherwise 800series would not exist ) you have to keep in mind that X670 was MASSIVELY overpriced to begin with so you are not getting remotely as much as you should for what you are paying. Just as a reminder 2-3 gens ago you were getting enthusiast boards for that type of money, nowadays you get entry level to mid-tier at best . Does nowadays mid-tier provide more than 2-3 gens ago mid-tier ? It sure does but you are also paying much more for it so yeah that's the whole point .

    I have always liked MSI Carbon but not the price but in todays prices they are OK. Gigabyte already dropped the ball with ALL but the Master having only 6-Layer PCB But they did upgrade to ALC 1220 audio (Not ALC 4080 YET) and I am not a fan of 60Amp power stages on any X870 board when they cost $290 or more. My go to just lost me since they cheeped out from AM5 and way Over charged for them for what you get. Even the GIGABYTE B650 AORUS ELITE AX which has 8-Layer PCB and 14-2-1 70amp Power Stages Vs GIGABYTE B650 AORUS ELITE AX ICE with 6-Layer PCB and 12-2-1 60 amp power stages which is the newer version in White and mad Cheaper and they wanted more for it until now along with them Using 15 year old audio ALC897 audio which they are so proud of putting on their boards that they only call it High Definition Audio and you have to find which codec they used somewhere in the fine print.
