    You know, after everything she had been through, I actually expected Samus to react with rage than stand in fear of seeing Ridley.

      Well lets think for a second, it mainly has to do with Ridleys form
      Yes Samus has Faught Ridley many times and many forms and Samus has not showed no means of emotion in past fights. Buts lets stop and think. This takes place after Super Metroid, Zebes is destroyed as well as the Space Pirates, Mother Brain, and any last trace of Ridley.
      Put yourself in Samus's shoes. You finally defeat your arch enemy that killed your parents (or at least involved with their deaths). You finally think he's dead once and for all. The space pirates are not there to fix him, no phazon, NOTHING NOT A SINGLE INDICATION. This is even stated her relief in the opening cutscene. Then Out of nowhere he's back IN HIS ORIGINAL STATE. NO WIRES, NO EXPLANATION (at that very moment), and no space pirates to indicate any means of revival. How would you feel to have the thing you thought died when Zebes exploded be floating there right in front of you Intact and you don't know why.
      I am pretty sure you'd confused and scared to see what is LOGICALLY IMPOSSIBLE RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.

    Her reaction would have made so much more sense if this fight happened BEFORE the first Metroid game, while Samus was still a Federation soldier. We would have eaten this scene up and felt nothing but sympathy for Samus breaking down upon her FIRST confrontation with the monster who ate her parents. It would have made her two future victories against him all the sweeter for how far she would go from where she started.

    • @Konh-Minh
      @Konh-Minh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      that would make a lot more sense. but in another case, it could also be because she flat out blew up a planet with him still on it, so she thought he was long dead, but then he's back so she's surprised again. So it's more of a combination of, "What the hell, you should be dead!" and all the stuff he did to her in the past.

    • @Trikovioz
      @Trikovioz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@Konh-Minh Even so, a different reaction would have made sense. She is breaking down like it's her first time seeing him since she was a kid and he killed her parents.
      I'm not saying she wouldn't have reacted, but maybe not paralyzed with fear. Shocked, of course, confused, absolutely, but scared like if she'd never seen him before, I don't think so. Scared because he's not dead, I can understand, but she straight up had a breakdown here because of it.

      That's true, but even still, she killed Ridley, she blew him up with Missiles and the combination of Wave beam, Ice Beam and Plasma Beam, she burned him, electrified him, freeze him, Shreddered him with explosions and so on.
      She finally killed him.
      I would have acted the same when I found out that someone I killed stood in front of me alive, not knowimg if it is a clone or a vengeful spirit or similar

    • @littlemoth4956
      @littlemoth4956 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hard disagree. Last time was Super Metroid, where Samus was said to have completely snapped and destroyed Ridley so thoroughly that there was no hope of him surviving or coming back afterwards.
      She probably had eliminated him from her mind, believing she finally got closure because he was finally dead. You can imagine the reaction you'd have if you breathed a sigh of relief after the end of years of suffering, only to find out it's not over yet.

    • @littlemoth4956
      @littlemoth4956 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Trikovioz My guy, that's not how PTSD works. Samus has moved on, yet Ridley is still alive, so OF COURSE she would react this way! Cargoshots put this well - soldiers who have faced actual threats still have breakdowns when they hear or see anything that reminds them of the sights and sounds and/or events that traumatized them. Even if they had fully realized that they would never go through the stress of experiencing those things again, they STILL can't handle it.

    Ridley got destoyed and blown to pieces in Super Metroid along with Zebes.
    The reason Samus is so shocked here is that 1. because she didn't expect Ridley to come back and 2. because Ridley's reappearance confirms that _she_ herself is what allowed Ridley to be cloned (Just like the Metroids). She saw him grow up throughout the game and only now realises that it IS Ridley - the murderer of her family and her worst nightmare unexpectedly reborn.
    As such, her reaction is pretty understandable to me

    I think a lot of people are missing something here.
    This. This was the moment where it fully dawned on Samus that there is NO GETTING RID OF RIDLEY. They may have fought before, but this was when Samus realized that this nightmare from her past WOULD NEVER STOP HAUNTING HER.
    In video games, recurring villains are the norm. No matter how many times you drop Bowser into lava, destroy one of Eggman’s mechanical machinations, or pump Wild Dog full of lead, they’re bound to come back swinging. We often take these recurrences with a grain of salt, but from a real-life standpoint, they’d actually be pretty terrifying.
    Imagine a guy causes a shit ton of trouble for you and your family. You shoot him in the head. Done and done right?
    WRONG!
    Same guy comes back stronger than ever, and even more determined to give you and your loved ones a bad time. Okay, no biggie. You shoot him again, MULTIPLE TIMES, and leave the carcass. All said and done?
    NOT EVEN CLOSE!
    Guy comes back again, and now he’s REALLY pissed. This time you shoot him in the head, tear the rest of his body apart with bullets, douse what’s left in gasoline, light a match, and walk away like a badass as whatever edifice the two of you had your climactic showdown in burns to the ground behind you. All’s well that ends we-
    NOPE!
    Guess who’s baaaaaaaaaack? At this point, you’re on your knees in shock. This is our life now. A never-ending battle with a guy out for your blood. If that isn’t a tough pill to swallow, I don’t know WHAT is.

Honestly if you fix the dynamic between Adam and Samus and a more Metroid fusion esc approach or Metroid prime thing and fix the dialogue to make it a little less soap opera this game would be pretty damn solid. But the dialogue was scewed because the guy who directed it didn't speak or know much about the English language so the game felt very very japanese and not in any of the good ways. I know this scene gets a lot of hate, and a lot of it is totally justified. I mean, Samus as we know her wouldn't be so timid and cower, she's relatively trigger happy in other Metroid cutscenes, but let's appreciate the fact that this cutscene actually acknowledged the manga. As far as I know, this is the first and only time we ever got a glimpse into Samus' past in-game. I mean, I'm sure all of us have read the manga and know that Ridley killed her parents, but this is the first time it is touched upon in a game. If a new Metroid game is coming soon, I hope that we get to see more of Samus' past elaborated on, just as long as they don't totally change her personality in the process.

    I always thought Samus's reaction made sense from a story point of view. Ridley's been explained as being able to regenerate by eating things, so his returning appearances could've be handwaved by Samus as merely defeating him, not destroying him completely- he's never been the main target or objective, just an obstacle. So perhaps she just didn't waste more time than she needed (or was even aware of his method of regeneration at all). However, this takes place after Super Metroid, where, even if she didn't finish the job, the whole 'exploding planet' most logically SHOULD have. And Super Metroid leaves none of that to the imagination- the ending very clearly shows her escaping an exploding Zebes.
    So you've got this giant fire-breathing spear-tailed monster that murdered your mother right in front of you as a child (and even delightfully reminds you about that, apparently, in one of the sources). It tries to kill you multiple times, so you left it rotting on a planet that's in a million chunks in space right now- try to regenerate from that! There's no way it can possibly come back from that. Only, it does exactly that. On top of the sheer horror of realizing an EXPLODING PLANET will not erase this thing from your life, you also realize that there's another person standing near you who is both less experienced with this and more vulnerable than you. You don't even have the advantage of flying this one solo- there's someone near you that very well can die right now. (As far as Samus is concerned, last time she was in a room with this monster and another human being, the latter wound up brutalized. Fun.)
    Most would be panicking at that point, especially if they're the kind of decent human that's loathe to lose an ally- even if he's the kind of idiot that loses track of his ammo and walks right towards the very thing Samus pleadingly tells him not to mess with. (That has a lengthy record of slaughtering humans for giggles.)
    I don't think this shows Samus as being weak- weak wouldn't be hopping around blasting away at Ridley the moment she comes back to her senses. (In this case, post-cutscene Samus.) I think it just shows her as human; one that realizes consequences can be much more dire the moment someone more vulnerable than her is involved, which is pretty much everyone Not-Samus as far as she is concerned. She's got the power armor of a lost civilization that can be optimized time and time again and outfitted with superhuman abilities and an unimaginable arsenal. These guys lack all of that, and have weapons that fail at extremely inconvenient times. That's not something you want on your mind when you're going on the xth round with what's probably your mortal enemy (that you just discovered really sucks at that 'mortal' part.)
    I'm not saying this is Samus's finest moment, but when you try to remember she's a lone person wandering the blankness of space, only stopping to occasionally deal with the villains that murdered her entire birthplace colony, who keep setting up shop in the abandoned places of her all-but-disappeared adoptive family- it's not that far-fetched to imagine she might lost her %@#$ for a couple of moments. The history of dealing with a terror before isn't necessarily an extended invitation for it to keep popping back up in your life, especially when you dealt with it the last time by obliterating the very planet it was on.

    Okay, for those who don't understand, here's the deal about Samus' reaction to Ridley. There's pleanty of reasonable explanations why she react this way:
    1- Ridley himself. Yes, Ridley has come back time and time again to fight Samus. But all those times she fought him, Ridley wasn't completely dead. He managed to recover and come back later to fight Samus, whether by cybernetic enhancements, through Phazon, or natural recovery. However, In Super Metroid, Samus did end up killing him, and even if she didn't, the exploding planet Zebes did, so she expected that he would be dead for good, not expecting him to come back after that.
    2- Samus was still under PTSD. Sure, she may have gone over it after the fights with Ridley before, and I'm sure she felt that way the first time she fought Ridley on Zebes. However, the events of Super Metroid, when she fought the Mother Brain, the Baby Metroid saved her and sacrificed itself while do so, making her feel the loss of someone who saved her, like her parents, reminding her of that moment, thus the PTSD. She was completely convinced that the metroids, the space pirates, mother brain and even Ridley were finally dead, but still suffering the effects of PTSD and seeing Ridley again triggered that her fear as she never expected him to come back when Ridley's body was blown up along with Zebes.
    3- Knowing another innocent bystander was beside her, that being Anthony, who had no experience fighting Ridley like Samus does, Samus panicked as she didn't want anybody else to die. It reminded her how she lost her parents, as well as the baby metroid, and she didn't want Anthony to suffer the same fate. When Anthony fell off the platform, Samus snapped out of it and fought Ridley as hard as she could, despite her inevitablity of saving Anthony.
    I'll say this, Yes, the game has major flaws, Yes, I think Adam's restricting Samus using her equipment is annoying and even stupid, Yes, I know her monologuing of the baby and the bad voice acting is annoying, but aside from that, I think they made Samus more human than she ever was in the previous games, and not just some killing machine. She's a badass bounty hunter, yes, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have feelings.
    That's my opinion of this moment and of this game.

      Most of the people forget that and just say "why samus is scared? She is not like that, it ruined the character"
      Uhh well, the fact that he killed your parents and you know about it, then you fought him several times and then you think its finally dead, that means your nightmare is dead, great, BUT then like Bird Magic HEY, THE NIGHTMARE ITS ALIVE AND IS COMING FOR YA, also the plus that the bottle ship reminds her Zebbes and also the GF there with OG’s companions and your general that you considered a Father figure who constantly remindes you that the PURPLE FIRE PLASMA BREATHING PTERODACTYL PIRATE killed your parents and basically started your life of fighting horrible creatures……if that's not a good reason to be scared and confused through this and also the entire game is not enough then IDK what it would be.
      Sometimes I think people didn't understood Metroid Other M story, of course there are some things that are rubbish here and there but again, its not that bad if you know the lore, also, this is the game where we can see a lot of Samus real feelings, inside of that armor and colourless personality there's just a girl who's life was changed for bad.
      Oh yeah and forgot that……"she didn't had to act like that, I will be annoyed and shoot him on the face, Samus is a badass"
      ……ehh…sh…she later comes back from her ptsd and fights like no one on that universe…act and having a first reaction doesn't mean that it will stay like that.

      Metroid (Zero Mission)? Shot down. Metroid Prime? Shot down again. Multiple times. Metroid 2 (Samus Returns)? Shot down, again. Baby drained him a bit, but he didn't die.
      Super Metroid? Shot down, then seemingly subsequently caught in a self-destruct explosion that literally destroys Planet Zebes completely. And every other Ridley appearance from then on has been a clone or imitation. Unless the games say otherwise, the original Ridley is truly dead.
      But even with that, Samus still encounters Ridley, after an explosion that, unless he could manage to flee the planet in time, would completely destroy every cell in his body. Who wouldn't freak out, even just a little?

    For those complaining about Samus and her freaking out when confronted by Ridley, there are three things to consider:
    1. Ridley killed her mother in front of her in the Zero Mission manga. The ads for this game made it clear that remains canon.
    2. The only constant in her life, the only person that she continues to see is Ridley. At this point, breaking down makes sense when she has fought him in Metroid, the Prime series, Super Metroid, and he just keeps coming back. Even the Metroids are gone, but Ridley will always haunt her.
    3. Samus had a very loose concept of character prior to this game (part of the charm of a silent protagonist is the ability to project onto them). This is the only game where she had an actual character. Whether the depiction is good or bad is up to the audience, but claiming that its out of character for her makes no sense when she's basically been an audience surrogate since her inception.
    Just a thought.

      But once Zebes was FINALLY destroyed and with it EVERY possibility that she come back the usual way, she probably let her guard down about it and was thinking "that sucker is finally dead".

      Definetly. The fight with Quenn Metroid just...happens, with little to no build-up, unlike Ridley, who we've seen grow along the tension since the start, the fight with Melissa is putrid, she just...*dies* after one shot, a shot that Samus MISSES, leaving the Federation to finish Melissa of, all the while Phantoon just appears out of nowhere and is killed just as quickly as the Queen Metroid. Ridley is legit the only part of the villain ensenmble who actually EARNS his spot as one of the main antagonists. There's also the setting. Ridley appears from searing, molten metal like a demon straight from hell, his dark silhouete cast against the harsh red light of the boiler room, all the while epic orchaestral music blares in the background and blends with his demonic screeches as everything is covered in flames. Meanwhile the final bosses are all fought in borung, grey rooms, with no interwsting lighting or composition.

    It makes sense why Samus was so mortified when she saw Ridly. She had finally avenged her family and put the past behind her when she finished him the last time they fought. However, once she saw him literally come back from the dead through cloning, she got the realization that no matter how hard she tried, the ghosts of her past would always return to haunt her for the rest of her life, such is with people who have Post Tramatic. Or at least, that’s what I believe.

    • @EternalRoman
      @EternalRoman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Read the METROID manga and you will understand. But let me give you a summary and my opinion on why.
      Ok so, Samus was born in a Human Colony on a mining Planet. Both her Father and Mother worked there, when she was 3 yrs old she has her first encounter with the scary Birdlike looking yet good Chozo alien race when they visited the colony. She befriends the oldest member of the party. Soon after they leave the colony is attacked by Zebezian Space Pirates with Ridley as the leader. As the pirates are mascaraing the colonists and raiding the colony, in the mist of chaos when looking for her parents Samus encounters Ridley and she tries to befriend him even when feeling scared of him (remember she is 3yrs old) Ridley rears to chomp her down, Samus' mother appears and Ridley fires at Samus' mom vaporizing her. Her father explodes himself within the command Pirate ship with the highly flammable mineral they stole, exploding the ship.
      The Chozo returned and find Samus as the only survivor and they take her to Zebes. There she is genetically enhanced with their own DNA to survive on the planet and also trained her in combat to be the protector of the galaxy. The provide her with the Power Suit and afterwards she is prompted to Join the Galactic military. When she deflects as seen in the Flashbacks of this game, when she is given the Zero Mission to attack Mother Brain and the Space Pirates when she fights Ridley the games NEVER show her PTSD, though the manga addresses it. Also the other appearances of Ridley in the other games are never approached story wise cause the games were never given the narration for the story aside from intro. This is why people believe that Samus was a robotic cold b*tch that has no emotions and would kill anyone or anything in her way. When she spares the Larva Metroid in Metroid 2 it is first shown her passive and emotional attitude without words in the original Gameboy game, and in it Ridley never appears which to me was perfect and they ruined the Remake having a Meta Ridley appear, but still there was no approach to her attitude withing the game.
      Super Metroid happens and Ridley is seen in the intro game, once again we cannot know her attitude story wise cause there is no in depth story interpretation like before. And finally when Samus finally kills him also we can't tell anything on the emotional depth of Samus and her deal with Ridley. Since OTHER M is right after SUPER METROID and before METROID FUSION, we then are given a counted story narrated by Samus, since her characterization and partial backstory in narration was approached on FUSION and on METROID 1 Remake ZERO MISSION. In OTHER M, instead of reading or creating it by us, they give Samus a characterization and voice and then the story is approached directly. So, to me when she sees and recognizes that Ridley was cloned and revived and in front of her, her psychological trauma comes again cause she believed she had finally avenged her family and the colony and seeing him is a shock, making her relive her shock, pain, and childhood trauma with all the horrors she saw, hence you see the image of her as a little 3 yrs old child cowering and crying. She can't believe it nor had suspected it.
      This shows that Samus isn't a flawless heroine, nor perfect in anyway. She IS human, which is the turmoil she had in the manga when she was being trained and other Chozo criticized her emotions, and to me is fine cause a true hero HAS to have emotions and compassion. She is still a badass and kicks ass regardless.
      Now I do have things I hate of her characterization in OTHER M:
      1. Physically I hate that they made her a typical short defenseless fragile looking girl. The original specs of her said that without the armor Samus was a tall amazonian looking beauty of 6'1"
      2. Samus with her armor is supposed to confuse people when she talks, making it seem that people that don't know her or about her to think/believe she is a Man, or a Male humanoid alien, or male cyborg.
      3. I don't mind emotions at all, but they have made her too much into a crying emotional wreck, and if you don't play her in the cutscenes she seems completely inexperienced as a warrior or Bounty Hunter, which clashes with her Fear inducing presence and fame throughout the galaxy.
      4. Her abilities in the cutscenes make her as good as the simple federation Military and their human made power suits, making her just as weak or talented, which is a contrast with her abilities not just on the games but also the power her genetics have and the Chozo Power Suit.
      5. The power suit appears in OTHER M as a stupid magical attire, appearing from thin air. It is supposed to be a Techno Organic suit, it is symbiotically bonded to her, and when it is active it cannot be removed, much less stunned as the game showed with Ridley and later Adam. METROID FUSION she was knocked out and the Suit had to be surgically cut and removed from her getting altered and weakened. Its organic parts got infected with X Parasites in the FUSION game.
      Sorry for the book long read and I hope that aside my point of view, that the info that I provided was of use to you...if you read it all LOL

    Rant time, everybody!
    As someone with PTSD, I know that it doesn't magically fix itself even if your abuser/space pirate is dead. It can come up at anytime; during a fight, during breakfast, etc. So to me, Samus breaking down here makes sense.
    The problem is that other people don't know that.
    This could've worked if prior to this, Samus gets a flashback or nightmare which leads to her breaking down. Hell, maybe she can be frustrated because he's dead, because bounty hunters are supposed to be strong. Then Adam could tell her that she's allowed to be vulnerable sometimes. She's allowed to be human. That way, it establishes that she's still very afraid of Ridley so gamers don't get confused.
    Either that, or this: make it obvious that her breakdown is from shock. Instead of saying "Ridley...!?" She could go berserk and scream, "no, you're dead!! You're dead!!" All while firing shots that he easily dodges them. Then she feels truly helpless, and she flashes back to her childhood. Then she REALLY breaks down.
    I dunno. Maybe my idea is still shit. But I think it's better than THIS.

    Ok, after fighting with Ridley so many times it doesn't look good that her PTSD manifests itself so late in the chronology, but then we can agree that Retro Studios screwed up by not putting a similar scene in the first Metroid Prime, which would have been more appropriate.
    The first three games couldn't do it because of the limitations and the little narrative of the time, but what excuse has a GC game? Especially after games like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and even Zelda.
    A short cinematic would have been enough, and it would have been the most logical thing to do. Taking into account the manga (which is canon), such a reaction from Samus is totally justified.
    People forget (or don't know) Samus' past, and that her "personality" in the first games and Primes is INEXISTENT (again, Retro must have given her a few dialogues), and basically she was just an avatar.
    Only the manga, Fusion and Other M really have a characterization, and in fact it's consistent between them. If you don't like the real (and only) personality of Samus then... you just don't like the character and that's it.
    There's nothing wrong with wanting her to be different, but that doesn't mean she is.
    The same goes for her looks, which for some reason many wish, demand and even claim she is/should be super muscular and tall, when she literally never has been, even in the Primes (the height and weight they always say is right is WITH the suit. The American Super Metroid guide distorted the fanbase's perception of the character).

    She did defeat Ridley multiple times in the past but knew he could come back du to the Space Pirates, come Super Metroid where she apparently finally defeat him for good with a mention for "no resurection this time" since the spaces pirates are basicly gone at this point.
    She even express relief that she finally put her foes down -subconsciously dropping her guard-.
    And then HE appear again out of nowhere, in his original form, and fierce as ever.
    No explanations, no logical reasons in the moment, just the pure shock factor of seeing AGAIN the one who killed her parents, EVEN TOUGHT HE SHOULD BE DEAD AT THIS POINT!
    She cracked, she let her guard down and the trauma came back. Until she finally snapped out of it after Anthony did his little "stunt".

    You know what, after seeing this scene again after so many years, it actually works quite well and is by far the most exciting one in Other M. The idea of a Samus getting to a state that is this vulnerable, and it being her arch-nemesis of all, is pretty effective. There are only two major issues with it. 1. She wouldn't probably act like this at this point in her career and 2. This would be SO much more effective if up until this point, Samus wasn't already depicted as a much less stoic person in Other M. If she had been the usual badass Samus we know and love until this point, it would be a beautiful way to highlight just how traumatic Ridley is to her and how powerful of a villain he is. He's the only one who can break her.

    i dont understand why so many fans detest this game,more specifically this scene.
    in pretty much every other game she is portrayed with next to no emotion or traits of character personality...
    but in this game we see a range of emotions
    Heartbrake
    Trauma
    anger
    lonelyness
    regret
    the scene where she briefly flashes back to her as a child while staring down Ridley was very powerfull
    imagine seeing your own mother mutilated right in front of you by an evil bloodthirsty tyrant,and after going through hell and back you think you have conquered him once and for all,only for that same fiend that haunts your past to return,staring you down as if your past victory over him meant nothing...
    that could be enough to brake anyone for a brief moment,even samus
    she may still be a hardened bounty hunter but she is not without her own personal demons and emotions.
    it could have been worse,at least other M didint portray her as some tsundere bitch

    I think that a BIG reason that Samus froze was that Ridley wasn't just screeching at her. He was TALKING to her. My best guess is that he was saying stuff along the lines of, "Did you REALLY think I was gone for good?", "YOU helped me make my return possible! ", "All these years you've tried to be the hero, and yet the sad truth is, YOU'RE JUST LIKE ME!"

  • @countlazuli8753
    @countlazuli8753 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The PTSD of Samus is a strange thing to me. It seems to me they wanted to convey the way she reacted to Ridley in the prequel manga but forgot they were putting it in a metroid game (and a late one at that). I won't lie, that scene in the Manga where Ridley taunts Samus about having eaten her parents was gold, but still a book so it had more liberty to convey phycological elements that may just be harder to convey in these types of games.
    If you ask me, the way Samus gets over her fear of Ridley is not very satisfying to me. The way she regains her senses in the manga is a beautiful scene, but ends there. Samus is ready to face Ridley for real before the games even begin, and only now do we get to see the trauma Samus has endured on screen. PTSD is not something that just turns off with the push of a button, and it would have been satisfying to see Samus overcome her fear of him across the games, perhaps finally overcoming her fear in Super metroid. But again, these are metroid games with a mostly mute protagonist in a world of visual storytelling, so there is little room to make the inner trauma of Samus work on screen.
    The Manga did it well because it didn't have to follow the nature of the games and Other M wasn't following the fundamentals of a Metroidvania regardless. If we got something like a Metroid Netflix series done in the castlevania style, I think the inner trauma of Samus and how she overcomes her fear of Ridley would be a gem to see.

    With Samus' character, the PTSD panic attack of this degree doesn't make sense. Yes, you would be freaked out if you battled a creature 5 times, saw its dead body after metroids sucked it dry, then knew said corpse was on planet you watched blow up, and then saw it again alive and well, you would be freaked out since it would seem like nothing you could possibly do could kill it. ya know what. I finally realized why I hate most gamers even with myself being one. they think that just because the gaming company does 1 thing different, the entire game sucks. Other M was 110% Consistent with everything. Samus's Character, The storyline of the game, the Voice acting, everything about the game could have been a lot worse! A LOT WORSE. Just because it doesn't meet the expectations you give it, doesn't mean it's a bad game. This happens all the time in every damn community. I hear people complain that The game is inconsistent with Samus's character, yet if you do your research, there are parts the game doesn't add. Including the fact that Ridley Toys with, verbally and mentally scars/abuses samus, and even goes as far as to torture her by talking about the past with things such as "Your Mother's Corpse was delicious." So Samus was never able to heal. Her PTSD was growing each time She saw Ridley, she usually either suppressed it enough to not be too emotional, or turned her scars and Sadness to rage. but the fact stands that Samus was scared. She still is. The fact that Ridley was dead for good with no ability to come back, only for the Galactic Federation to pull a damn left field and without even their knowledge, Cloned the bastard, and allowed him to live because they didn't know it was him. You people act like you know more than the people who fucking created the series. you act like you're fucking entitled to shut down others for liking something just because it doesn't match YOUR EXPECTATIONS OR FIT YOUR OPINIONS. I make my arguments to try to get people to see both sides and atleast meet them at some sort of CIVIL AGREEMENT. BUT THE FACT IS You people attack others for no reason but to bitch. Other M could have been way worse. it could have been voiced by Brad Pitt and Miley Cyrus. Be fucking thankful that you even got a metroid game in the first place. one day you won't get shit. or the game company will do everything you hate to get revenge. If anyone wants to argue do it in a civil manor, or GTFO because you don't belong in the Gaming community. • @cosplayingchao
      @cosplayingchao 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gamers are angry that her character gets in the way of the actual game. Instead of using the whole arsenal Samus has, she turns off those abilities because someone else is commanding her to. It doesn't help that it's someone new (or not so much if you've played Metroid Fusion). Samus didn't have much of a character in the games other than being this badass character that only gets more powerful as you progress. Previous Metroid games also allowed you and encouraged you to explore different areas of the world you were on, and if you were good enough at the game you could acquire some power ups earlier than intended. Instead of allowing this in Metroid Other M, you wait for Adam to authorize it (which you may well know is now a common joke in the fandom).
      Sure, I mostly came here to mock the PTSD moment Samus has, I'll give you that, and you seem more than aware it is because of her numerous encounters prior to Other M. However, even in those games, it still seems as though those times were the end of Ridley. Every time he came back before then, it was usually a different form (Meta Ridley, Omega Ridley) until finally his actual death in Super Metroid. When he shows up here, it's not much of a surprise to any of us gamers. We just expect to fight Ridley and go through the motions as usual, but we see Samus, who we have never seen distraught before this game, completely breakdown. It shattered our mental image of this character who we saw ourselves in and made us feel like the brave and famous space bounty hunter. In this game, she is constantly working against that portrayal as she awaits orders from a man to do anything, including using her own weapons and tools, rather than do things her own way because she's decided to be independent from a soldier.
      I looked more into this upon your request and did some thinking. If you do research and/or read the manga, this scene does make more sense. She just recently lost the planet she grew up on as well as a creature whom she had a motherly connection to. Her emotions would be pretty unstable knowing both of these things are gone, and now here comes the spitting image of her parents' murderer in her face. Realistically, that seems more than enough to trigger some PTSD right there.
      With that in mind, I still believe the problem isn't with the character itself. The game did a poor job applying her character where it usually isn't the focus. This is obviously the most story-driven game in the Metroid franchise, which is a very drastic change from the norm. The draw to Metroid wasn't the story of the character, but rather the story of the world she explored. The Metroid Prime trilogy executed this perfectly by allowing the player to scan everything on the planet. Scanning, however, is mostly optional, only needed to activate certain events (highlighted in a different color even). Samus was merely an observer of a vast alien world that you were encouraged to learn about all on your own. Therefore it made more of a connection between the character and player. Other M is trying to offer more character based on the lore, but it's such a drastic change from what we've received prior that of course gamers would get upset over. If this took place as a prequel to Zero Mission rather than a sequel to Super Metroid, maybe it wouldn't have been as bad.

    Samus should have said "Oh look, he's back" and then shot him in the face. The whole point of Samus to be a female character that ISN'T a damsel in distress. I will never play this game. All of it's defenders are people that don't care about the butchering of Samus's character. Samus isn't supposed to be humanized, she's supposed to be better than you. You'd run away from Ridley, but she won't, because she's fucking Samus. She's a badass.

      Oh so now PTSD is the same as being weak. She's not a damsel in distress, she doesn't run. She's professional but she's not a robot either, if she were an unbreakable shell there'd be no interest whatsoever in character. I mean, unless you want an indestructible, un-talking, grey wall for a character.

    • @mrturtleguy23
      @mrturtleguy23 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We don't need PTSD from a space bounty hunter. You think you have a good argument, but come on now. She's robotically enhanced, that's canon.

      Yeah I was playing a retarded devil's advocate there, they really did fuck with her character. I mean they've basically taken the game equivalent of Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell and turned her into a run of the mill teenager with no willpower or (mental) strength.

      She got over the PTSD in the manga which was years BEFORE Zero Mission. Then she kicked the shit out of Ridley in the Manga, Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and The Prime games if you count them. If you've killed someone more than once, doing it again shouldn't scare you. Japan loves pussifying girls hahaha

    My biggest problem is that Samus canonically went through training to have power over her ptsd. She had literally done this exact same thing some 16 years ago, with Old Bird, who **set up a meeting with Ridley for Samus's training**. She passed and has since been in better control of that fear. That ontop of this being the 4th? Time she's faced him, she should not be going into a regressive state.

      +ArodWingfoot You're wrong. Samus only listened to Adam because HE WAS HER ONLY FATHER FIGURE. Plus she hadn't seen him in years. I love how people won't get that through their heads. She respected Adam as both her former commander and father figure and in human mind she wanted to follow his orders.

    • @ArodWingfoot
      @ArodWingfoot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Shaytokun Okataki and she ends up making horribly stupid mistakes as a result to the point of almost getting killed. Devotion is one thing, but it doesn't lead to pointless suicide which she almost commits several times because Adam didn't tell her. for example she has to go through a level that is extremely hot to the point of killing her. Doesn't use her suit feature because, using your logic, "Daddy didn't tell me too."
