  • Does your lawn tractor suddenly not mow, but it still drives?
You might have a slipped or broken blade belt.
Here's a very quick (sorry it's a little shaky) video to show you where and how to fix a slipped blade-engagement belt, for a Troy Bilt 22 inch mower tractor, but this probably also applies to some other mowers too. This is the same belt that is connected to the blade lever on the side of the tractor. So, you might also notice that the lever doesn't seem to have the same tension as before. If the belt didn't break and it only slipped off, then this may be a quick fix for you, that is totally free!
This quick video shows you where the problem will most commonly pop up and how to get the belt back into place easily.
Check out my other video about how to replace the belt on this tractor too:
    • How To Replace a Troy ...
Another thing you might want to try, if this keeps happening, aside from replacing a worn/loose belt, is to try cleaning out all the grass from around the pulleys -- it makes a huge difference on performance. Hope it helps.
Thanks for watching. Hope it helps. Please subscribe and like, thank you!

Hey, just a note for folks watching this. That pulley has a retainer that the belt must go past. It's behind the pulley relative to the camera in this video and can only be seen for a few frames. The "right'' was to get it on is probably to loosen/take off the pulley, but I've found that I can usually man-handle it on by laying the belt at the gap, rotating the pulley clockwise with my left hand while pulling with the right. It's a little frustrating at first, but becomes pretty natural after you've done it a handful of times.

I've tried that without success but the belt has come off for the third time now and I'll try again to do as you suggest.

I replaced the deck belt, replaced with the correct part one of the pullies that I noticed was going bad, the pto cable is not broke, the belt is installed correctly, and yet it continues to throw belt, and now the PTO won't engage the blades, I spent a lot of time with the deck off the machine and went through it pretty well, and reinstalled everything correctly even installed new blades which are correct for the machine, sealed everything up , started the mower went to cut some grass and what do know!! the belt comes right off again, and yes I have belt guards install correctly on both sides and the belt is new.

I have same problem. Everytime I get 75% of my yard cut, the belt flies off. I've changed pulleys, belt, & cable. Belt doesn't squeal, smell from rubbing,.....it just comes off. @@ajciccone88 for what its worth, I came here looking for advice to. I will tell you what I did find onmy own though. On the left side (might be hard to do with deck on still) they're is a bracket your left idler pulley sets on. It's kinda like a bracket within a bracket. There is a through bolt holding the assembly on the deck, but there is also a bolt that sets inside a slot. You'll have to slightly loosen the through bolt and loosen the adjustment bolt too (if you can blow out this area really well as it tends to collect dirt and grass and rust was an issue on mine and cleaning it made it move soooooo much easier)This will allow your bracket with the pulley to move back and forth tightening and loosening the belt tension. It's not a ton of adjustment but I'm gong to put my deck back on and when my new belt comes in and I'm going to see if it helped enough to matter or not. Tools you'll need is a large screwdriver/small pry bar, a 13mm and14mm socket and ratchet, and a 14mm wrench for the back side of the through bolt.

Dear Friends. Please, help. My left (Driver side. The one with the adjustment gear) of the deck is high. The right side (passenger side. grass outlet side) is low. When lever is on position 4, i.e. the second highest, the right side of the deck scrapes the grass! The gear is all the way up. I.e "Driver side" of the deck is all the way down, but still too high. Do I need a new deck? New tractor? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the comment - good point. For a quick fix, this video will work. And, actually, sometimes, it will work long term. I did this vid toward the end of last mowing season and mowed a few times afterward, and this year already mowed the full yard again 3 times and it hasn't come off yet... If the springs are good, this sort of fix can sometimes last a long while (sometimes the slipping issue is just as simple as a lot of grass buildup). But yes, for a more solid fix, should tighten, and check it every now and then. Thanks!

It's when it's on all of the pulleys and still has way too much slack when it's in disengage mode. So much so that it falls lower when disengaged and will not hop back up on the drive pulley.
