I used to see our older aircraft sheet metal guys using thin transparent plastic sheet to make templates for patch panels. It was nice because you could cut it with scissors and it would conform to the contours, but not stretch or tear. I imagine it would work great for transferring over badge mounting holes as well.
This exactly the video I've been waiting for and hoping you would do. As you said all of the cars this age will need repair and mine is no exception. I really appreciate all the great tips and info.
When I was a teen I owned a 65 GTO, a 67,68 and 70 Firebird along with several Grand Prix. I would have loved to hand you do my bodywork. Your bodywork is exceptional.
Great job brother and great tips next time I do a fender lower patch I will check it on the car before I want it all up I learned my lesson last time I did one
Nice job! Your attention to details always amaze me! Most people wouldn’t notice or spend the time to fix the small differences you caught on the bottom of the fender
Those are the areas I look at on completed cars, I am always curious on whether that builder bothered with it. For me it only adds just a few minutes but it’s worth it for the added detail.
Must be nice working on a later model GTO. 😁 I’ve had a terrible time finding certain replacement parts for my 64. Even the patch panel for that fender rust behind the wheel comes with a warning to only use it as a last resort. So I ended up fabricating my own reinforcements and patch panels - left and right.
I was surprised to see you actually use the whole panel. But I definitely see the logic, being it 'fixed' the big ding in the fender. No worries about the driver side, we all get a little bit sometimes. You'll git 'er done!. Throw it in with the old deck lid, lol!
Are you worried about the rust that is inevitably on the upper part of the fender brace that you didn't cut out? This is coming along great, and I'm enjoying the series.
The answer is yes but it comes down to when do you stop trying to remove all signs of rust. It’s a balance of practicality , to get access to it clean and paint the surfaces would require removing all the plug welds and hope it goes back together, other option is having it acid dipped, then you still to paint or treat the surfaces and in some situations not possible. Then it’s bare steel plus in the seams acid dipping doesn’t remove the rust 🤷♂️. Imagine the time and costs to do either one of those options. What I’d do I try to remove any rusted sections that are pitted or very scaly if it’s surface I will try to coat or dump a rust encapsulator on the area. In the end the cars I build dont experience salt and bad weather so the odds of the rust progressing is slowed way down. I did my GTO 25 years ago like this and never had a rust thru issue in repaired areas, only on the rocker that wasn’t repaired at the time. So for me I deal with some rust in areas that can’t be seen and have been painted over
It wasn’t part of my original plan to mess with the passenger side when I dumped the car in that garage backwards. I was able to make it happen. Stuff like this keeps it fun. 😎
I remember the 71 gto on the walking dead that flipped over in the begining of the show.they had 70 fenders on it due to the fact they don't reproduce..them. good work
Much appreciated! Sad part is I am out of little projects n this car. Next it’s time to pull it from the frame and strip it down. Kinda want to do that at the new place.
On inside brace you could have cut slit along side and spread to even up and rewelded for better match. Not much work. Slits here and there in aftermarket parts make a huge difference!
Looks good. next time you're at the big box store, check out the low adhesion Frog Tape. I use the yellow version. "I'll have some of the...some of the yeller." edit: Easier to pull off to minimize stretch.
@incredibleadventures1027 apparently you don't know anything about construction tools, as an electrician we use them all the time and yes that is what we call them go to home Depot and look and they have many different blades for them from wood to metal to tile, so you didn't need to be an ass.
Jon , I really enjoyed this video. I always learn , every time I watch you. The dremel tool hack was top notch!
I was happy to finally use it. I bought it and forget that I have it. lol 🤦♂️
Great work most after market parts don't fit good
Normally the panels are less then good but in this case very happy with them.

That would be helpful too.
Excellent precision work Jon!
If it’s worth doing it worth doing well.
I always enjoy how you consider "all" the domino effects. Your step of test fitting is quite valuable. Keep spreading the wisdom !!
Thank you friend, btw I am back at MacAllister too.
This exactly the video I've been waiting for and hoping you would do. As you said all of the cars this age will need repair and mine is no exception. I really appreciate all the great tips and info.
Very happy to help
Nice fix. I love my dremel tool, it bails me out with small cuts a lot. 👍
It is a great tool. I just need to remember that I have it lol
Great tip on NOT TO LAP a patch panel!!! Looks factory done!!!
Lap is ok just not my preference for metal work.

Wow. Thanks! I think doing the job well and best of my abilities pays off in the end and keeps the car at a higher level of detail.
Great job brother and great tips next time I do a fender lower patch I will check it on the car before I want it all up I learned my lesson last time I did one
If you learn from it, it’s not always a mistake.
I do most metal cutting on the body sheet metal with the Dremel .nNrrower gaps to fill and great in the corners. Birdy
I have a dremel just need to get used to grabbing it
Great video Jon making progress on the 67 firebird got both rear quarters done doors are next
That’s great. Keep it up.

I have been there and very happy what parts are available now even if not perfect Great job on making your parts. It very time consuming
Another amazing job.
Thank you

I would have worked thr dent out if the inner brace wasn’t in the way, in the end very happy with the repair.
@@VinylVillageGarage I think I have 3 fenders that are damaged in that same area!
Nice tip about using masking tape as a template. My GTO needs the same work. Thank you for sharing.
I love my tape templates and “tape” measure, low cost and easy.
Nice work on the passenger side fender even with the limited space you had to work with 👍
Making it work with what I have

very nice repair Jon. Those patch panels are the bomb. Agree with fixing original metal when possible.
Yes very happy with the patch panels. The quality is very nice actually
Had to put ballerina shoes on to get around to that side 😂😂
Most of the Pontiac guys keep a pair hanging in their shop😊
It wasn’t part of my original plan to mess with the passenger side when I dumped the car in that garage backwards. I was able to make it happen. Stuff like this keeps it fun. 😎

Heck I missed that might have to find that episode and rewatch
@VinylVillageGarage just look up 71 gto destruction rick and shane are cops aiming guns
@ thanks I will search it out.
Great job...thanks for the tips....good content and thanks.... always looking forward to seeing more.....🔧🔧👍
Thank you for watching and commenting evert time! It really helps much appreciated!
Getting ready to do the same work on my 68. Nice to see what I'm going to be getting in to. Great video
Right on and good luck!
Great video as usual, my level of body work would’ve caused be to just buy a fender and save maybe the old one
New ones shipped to the house are nearly $1,000
@@VinylVillageGarage seriously?? I guess I should buy a welder! lol
another great video, Thanks
Much appreciated
Great work!
Much appreciated! Sad part is I am out of little projects n this car. Next it’s time to pull it from the frame and strip it down. Kinda want to do that at the new place.
@VinylVillageGarage
Will be working on the frame for the GT-37 when the weather breaks here in the Detroit area.
Nice job Jon!
Much appreciated, thanks!
Great work on that fender. Hope you find a replacement for the one with poor fitment.
I am hopeful a new one is way too expensive by the time it’s shipped.
Another good video! I used a Dremel when patching my windshield frame. Works great on those tight places. Just don't buy cheap cutoff blades! Lol!
You know oddly enough I used my dremel for small parts and its cuts well. I agree a good wheel is the answer
Nice work!
Thank you!

Good point it would have worked great.

Will do! Thanks
Nice!
Thanks
Sucks about the other fenders not passing the “ole rust checker” 😅 😮
Yeah. Soon as I get moved I will be on the search for a new one
Video quality is way better. New camera?
Yes actually thanks for noticing. My old camera lens got hit with a tiny piece of slag, amazing how much it degraded the quality
Ever try using multi tool they vibrate back and forth they get in tight spots good
Wtf do you mean by multitool? Be specific
@incredibleadventures1027 apparently you don't know anything about construction tools, as an electrician we use them all the time and yes that is what we call them go to home Depot and look and they have many different blades for them from wood to metal to tile, so you didn't need to be an ass.
@incredibleadventures1027 the first version of one I ever saw was air and used for body work
I bought the Dremel version multi tool and it has bailed me out countless times where I would have made a mess with a zip wheel.
I will put that multi tool on my wish list for sure
💪😎
Thanks!
@VinylVillageGarage welcome my friend
Next time please wear some safety glasses
👍
