Already I have to put up a correction 😅 I mistakenly implied that the regular Japanese Saturn controllers' buttons aren't con-caved. In fact, A B & C are just like they are everywhere else. I even show a picture of it!
Still though, anyone else here had experience with a 3D Control Pad?
    Stay safe ♥

The Saturn 3D controller was the best 6 button game pad I ever used. I originally got a 3D controller due to the Nights hype. In analog controls it was decent, but when used in Street Fighter Alfa, the controller kicked major butt. I liked the 3D controllers so much, I never bothered to get the revised 6 button controllers. Having two 3D controllers, there was no need. If retrobit were to remake this controller, I'll gladly take two of them. Great stuff Sega!

I just got mine in the mail today. I have one of each gen Saturn pad and one retrobit special color pad. I'm going to try it with Alpha 2 or maybe Super Turbo 2. Then XM vs SF maybe..

It’s so sad the Dreamcast controller didn’t have all ABCXYZ buttons even though it was so closely modeled after this one

Finally someone covers this. Just goes to show how far ahead Sega was again with these things, even before the n64 and psx Dualshock. Sega, I miss you in the hardware business.

If i was Sega i would release a an official high end PC case and a wireless controller, and that they were all branded with Sega and Dreamcast logos, so we would get an official Dreamcast 2 and everyone could build the PC as high end as they like.
Because you could have an official Dreamcast 2 that is much more powerful than a PS6 will be if you like, and PC has the largest collection of Sega games anyway.
I know i could basically create it myseld but it would be special if it was an all new controller and an official case for my PC.
Without that miracle happening to create a perfect Dreamcast controller, all i need to do is have a dreamcast swirl made that replaces the Xbox home button logo on an Xbox Series controller. Everything else is already a perfect match.
On controllers with one colored ABXY it would work, but of course i could buy an all blue, all green, all yellow, all red buttoned controllers and swap the buttons to match the Dreamcast color layout 😂

Magic Carpet also supported the 3D Control Pad, The Japanese version even had a limited edition that bundled the game with the controller.

The best and most important is Nights into Dreams, just for that game it is worth having that control, especially the one who knows how to play the game perfectly to make points records.

Its a great experience using the 3D controller with Nights for sure, but I actually think it's more important to have for the 3 Lobotomy ports of Quake, Exhumed, and Duke Nukem 3D. The 3D controller really adds to the experience of these 3 titles, they're a bit clunky and cumbersome with the standard controller, but once you play them with the 3D controller, the emersion goes up another level, they become so much more playable and enjoyable because of it.

I prefer the 3D control pad over the others for sure. It’s so comfortable and the buttons are soft, including the d-pad. It doesn’t cramp your hands either.

Sega Saturn Shiro did an interview with the guy who designed the 3D controller. One of the attachments was going to be a light gun sensor. How could would that have been? Gyro aiming too. Too bad the Saturn wasn't a success, it's a great console with a really unique library.

Hi, it's also the first ever controller to use Hall Effect, now more than 26 years ago! The amazing SEGA Saturn 3D Control Pad is realy very nice to hold in the hand, very nice way better than Gamecube's and similar shapes- it's probably the nicest to hold, the D-Pad iquite cool too (I guess coz' they need that designed for Virtue Fighter, the first ever 3D fighting game, SEGA also invented the first ever open-world, Shenmue, we truly owe a lot to SEGA and Shenmue for our very immersive games and game controllers nowadays- lots of first :-)
    God bless.

  • @eazyrat
    @eazyrat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Panzer dragoon zwei needs this pad. Looping the reticle for lock ons is too satisfying. Dpad gives you cramps. There's something comfy about the massive analogue I can't explain. It's the opposite of the n64 thin stick.

Interesting how you went with Championship Circuit Edition and sidelined the original, when the original release of Daytona USA also technically allows for use of the Multi Controller - it just treats it as a racing controller, like Rally.

I went with that because it fully supports it and not many games do.

Hey Bro quick correction for u. The virtual Stick is not nalog stick, it is just like the d pad contgorller but arcade stick on there, normal 8 way. What u speak of is the "MMision Stiuck" of which I have two of them! Full analog and neat thing is u can unatach and reatttach to left or right side so lefties or righties can use however they wish.

Best thing about the detachable cable is that theoretically you can make a wireless adapter that plugs into the controller.

  • @RetroGamesBoy78

There are actually far more games compatible with the 3D controller than you seem to give credit for (I believe there's 69 in total) .
The fact that they are so expensive now is a bit of an off-put to some I'm sure, but if you're a serious Saturn enthusiast, playing games like Quake, Exhumed, Duke Nukem 3D, Nights, Burning Rangers, and so many others, it's an essential bit of kit that really enhances the over all experience of the games its compatible with!

Love that controller, playing outrun at 60fps with it is such a great experience. QAlso the trilogy made by lobotomy software (quake, dukenukem3d, exhumed) have so well made analogue responses, it makes those games a joy to play.

I don't understand why Sega did not use this controller without the switch and with a second stick. It would have been the ultimate controller. The quality of all the element is better than the Dreamcast controller.

Great video! and what a coincidence im from the same city haha. I need to get more games for this controller (especially want duke nukem due to how impressive the lobotomy ports are) but I try to avoid ebay Where possible prefer seeing if cex have it then travelling down on the metrolink to whichever one has it so I can have a look at the condition first. I’m sure someone will trade one in eventually haha.

It's weird how this and the Dreamcast controller did hall effect sensors before it started to become more popular from certain companies like Gulikit and yet the industry never adapted to it even with the current generation.

  • @SicketMog

I'm hoping for the new handheld emulator consoles coming out of China to 1. copy this D-pad (best D-pad of all time) but 2. try to copy this "thumbstick". Haven't touched the 3D-controller in a while but I remember it being very comfortable. Hard to slip off of, due to the concave, and sits flush with the surface (would lend itself well to handheld I would think). Basically... Just copy the entire controller but put a screen on the top, a second stick at the bottom right (if you REALLY need one), separate the triggers into two pairs and you've got a, albeit clunky, very nice and comfy handheld design.

Its amazingly ergonomical in the hands and the '3d thumb stick' is a breeze. God knows why Sega didn't keep this design and build upon it for the Dreamcast, which imo has possibly the worst controll pad ever

12:45 idk man, i've seen Japanese sellers list it for something like 30 dollars on ebay which is actually on par with good shape saturn pads. Plus, it's made with durable plastic and magnetic stick and triggers. The only way to decently play nights

9:55 if you have an NTSC-supported TV you could import Sega Rally Plus and run it on your Sega Saturn via Pseudo Saturn or if modded.
Sega Rally Plus is same as the previous releases, but with added MultiController support.

I feel like the analog button/nub/whatever is not smooth enough when controlling the game and too floaty when physically manipulating it. It’s a step in right direction but rudimentary at best.
