QUESTIONS NOT ANSWERED:
1. Do I have to be married to live in a house on base?
-No, you do not need to be married. You can choose to live on base once you move out of the dorms, which usually takes about three years. You may live in the houses right away only if you are married or have a dependent, though.
2. Can multiple share rent for a house on base?
-I personally do not know the official answer to this question, and it may depend on which contractor you are leasing the house from in the first place...but it does happen. People love to save money.
3. What happens if I accidentally damage the house?
-When moving out of the house, you are required to complete a walk-through to check for things that might have been damaged. You will have to pay for damage similar to if you rent elsewhere, if your animals ruin the carpet you will replace it, if there are large holes in the walls it is your responsibility to tell management and cover costs, etc.
4. Is renter's insurance or home insurance covered with the price I pay for the house?
-No. All types of insurance are your responsibility, your housing allowance pays for things to include rent, utilities, trash/sewage, etc. Insurance is done at your expense in addition to those things.
5. Do I need a good credit score to live on base?
-You need a decent credit score to enter the Air Force, but it is not a requirement to move into base housing. They only request you provide a leave and earnings statement (a military pay stub).

WOW! We lived in Grand Forks base housing (Spruce Dr) back in the early 90s and it has come a long way! SO much nicer now! Walls were paper thin and could even hear our neighbors conversations - and more :-O. It was so bad we actually turned the basement into our bedroom. Our daughter was born at GFAFB hospital and is now considering becoming a 3rd generation Airman.. Thanks for the vid...

I was stationed at Grand Forks AFB from March 1977 to December 1980 and gained rank from E-1 to E-4. I was single and had to live in the barracks. (322) It was a 150 square foot room I shared with 1 roommate with an adjoining bathroom with 2 more guys next door. Two day rooms with one pool table, 2 TVs and one pay phone . On the 2nd floor were TWO washers and dryers for 60 guys!! Outside parking with limited electrical hookups to warm your car via a heater block heater. (Required in North Dakota)
I had to eat in the one and only chow hall 3 meals a day for 4 years. No separate rations or housing payments were allowed for single airmen. If I opted to not eat in the chow hall it came out of my meager pay. ($7,700 in 1980)
Of course the married guys got ridiculous allowances and still to this day I think was a gross discrimination.
This video sure looks nice, but it looks like the discrimination between single and married airmen perpetuates to this day.
Growing up, most of my friends lived on base so this video was like visiting a friend's house 😂lol

Thank you for sharing. I was a MSgt when I retired. Was stationed there 2011-12, LRS Sq, V FLIGHT, we were assigned a 3BR 2 bath duplex. Very roomy, nice yard. Miss this house!😁 Best home we were ever assigned in my time in the military. Next to the one at RAF LAKENHEATH UK. That one was nice too. They had just built them too. We were the 1st ones to live in that home.

Very nice house and one of the biggest benefits of military life. To get an apartment or condo with a garage as nice as what Sgt. Tiggs had would be very expensive not to mention all utilities and maintenance is taken care of. When I was in the AF as a single man I always thought it was unfair that I had to share a small room in the dorms while those with equal or lower rank who were married got full houses. It didn't take long for me to move off base so I could have my own place and not have to live under the control of the AF and their frequent dorm inspections.
Military housing has come a long way, and so have the dorms. Far cry from what I experienced in the 1980's at Nellis and in the mid-late 1990's at Grand Forks. Much better quality of life.

Back in the late 70s/early 80s, when I was a DMCCC/MCCC in the 447th SMS & DOTI, we lived at 1225C North March.....a 4-plex with 3 bedrooms. BUT....we had to cut our own grass & we called the backyard the "North 40"!😆👍

I'm glad this was helpful! If you've written something to her and haven't received anything yet, at all, you should be getting a letter soon with information about her graduation dates and what you can expect when visiting then. Otherwise, depending on where you live, it could just be taking a bit longer- it could also be she just hasn't made time to write anything. The first two weeks are some of the most stressful since you're still trying to figure everything out, and you can't really write letters unless you have free time (which you don't really) or unless you're willing to break the rules (which she might not be). Just stick it out a bit longer to see if you get somethin!

Wow, When I was there (83-86) you were responsible for mowing your yard, front and back, You had to do your own snow removal on the driveway and sidewalks.. And the housing units hadn't been renovated since the 60's. Lease? There was no lease and no garage wither, unless you were a higher ranking officer

You can select a list of jobs you are interested in, and hold out for one of those, but some recruiters can be stubborn. Check out my recruiting video, I talk a bit more about how much choice you get when picking a job!
Does it matter how many pets? I have 3 right now (2 dogs 1 cat) but I still have to go through BMT and Tech school still. Just curious I like to plan ahead. Oh and I will be married by the time I’m out of Tech School.

hey so I have a question. I am 15 and I have wanted to be in the Air Force since I was like 9. I still have a dream of it but I am very worried about this rare condition that I was born with. I was born with CRS (Congenital Radioulnar Synostosis). This means my that my 2 forearm bones are connected when they aren't supposed to be. This prevents me from facing my palms to the sky. I wouldn't be able to hold a gun and it's very discouraging knowing that I probably won't make it because of this stupid condition that will ruin my dreams. I hope there is some way I can get in... and if you know a way, please help me out.
Not too sure if there is a local Walmart type of grocery store & local gym when you live on base? What is there to do on your days off?
It's going to be different at every base, here the town is about 20 minutes off base. There's a Walmart, Target, local grocers, a *tiny* mall, random stores and food joints here and there. There is a gym on base, and other amenities like a movie theater, outdoor recreation, etc. On my days off I either go downtown to the clubs or work on my TH-cam things, it just depends.

Most bases have a commissary and an exchange (px) gym, rec center, bowling alley, theater, etc
From GFAFB, Minnesota is only a 20 minute drive away and the cities are only 5 hours further. Plenty to do there if you don't find something you like in the vicinity of Grand Forks.

If on-base housing is not available for my family after tech school, does that mean my wife can't come with me yet UNTIL housing is available? even if its 2-3 months that housing hasn't opened up?
If military housing isn't available at the time you wish to move on base (and I recommend submitting your paperwork while still in tech school, like Tiggs said), you can live in lodging on base, which is like a hotel situation with a kitchen and living room. Your family can join you whenever you find it most convenient!

Hi! I just have a question since I’m considering joining the air national guard. I was wondering, do you earn an associates degree for your job that you’ll be doing in the Air Force during the technical schooling right after bct? Or do you still have to go to college after the Air Force tech schooling to earn your degree? Like for example, if I am able to get the dental assistant job in the air national guard on my base does that mean I can be a dental assistant in my civilian life? I’m just confused on how the education works. Any info would be great! Thanks!
After you go through BMT, your tech training provides you with more insight on how to do your job and it does earn you a few credits. It will not be an entire degree though. You are automatically enrolled in the Community College of the Air Force for an associates in your career field, but you do have to take additional classes to actually get the degree most likely. If you are a dental assistant in the military you can get a job in the civilian world if you have enough experience, but if you're brand new the civilian world will prefer the actual degree.

As an o-1 do I get the option to go straight into housing (single, no dependents) or do I have to wait as most enlisted at the dorms?
From my understanding there is dorms special for officers.
I do have several questions, but maybe I can ask one right now. If you start at E1 with wife and two kids boy and girl do the kids get their own room because of gender or they do they have to share the room? Actually another question just popped in my head are there schools on base or do they have to leave base to attend school?
If you are married with kids you will likely receive a multi-bedroom house, but there are no rules regarding where kids have to sleep. That's a parenting decision, not an Air Force decision. There are usually schools on base, but if you choose to there are also local schools near most bases.
Can a civilian air force DOD live at the base?
What about family gatherings? Are those allowed ? Rules ? Who can who can not ? Etc
Yes! You just have to sponsor your family on to the base you live at. If you have family members with a crime record I think that prevents them from getting on base. But otherwise you're definitely allowed to have people visit.

That's a really good circumstantial question- if you are your mom's sole provider then she can be considered your dependent as well. This is a good question for a recruiter, since it's a bit out of the ordinary. While you are in tech school, you will be living in dorms.
I have a question that you guys might be able to answer, my fiancé and I are both in the Air Force. I am about to graduate tech school and be at my first duty station. He still has a little more than a year left. I wanted to get married before I got to my new base, would I get BAH even though he's still in training? Or do you think they would let me live out the dorms until he got out there and we could find a house in the middle. We luckily got stationed like an hour and a half apart without having joint spouse so that was super convent. But if you have any guidance to help me out please let me know!!
Hey girl! So if you get married before being stationed at your first base, you'll start making BAH whenever you bring your marriage cert. to the military personnel center and finance office. You'll *both* get BAH, but at different amounts. I don't remember the specifics but I think one person gets the "with dependent" BAH rate and the other gets the "without dependent" BAH rate. For here, those numbers are $1,200 and $900, respectively. It will change depending which city and state you are in. If you are married you won't be able to live in the dorms, you can either put in paperwork to live on base or find an off-base residency. Once you're married you can apply to be joint-spouse and hope to get orders changed so you live together and not an hour and a half away.

Do we get paid during tech school? I live by myself in an apartment right now and I’m thinking of going into the air national guard but started thinking, will I be able to afford to make my monthly payments while I’m away for however many months, to keep my apartment? My car payments? Etc.
You are paid full-time while in BMT and tech school. Sometimes guard and reserve Airmen don't go to tech school right away after BMT, but if you're doing the Air Force full time at any point you are paid as such.

Katie Renée the washer and dryer are on your personal dollar, I think Tiggs said in the video what appliances are included in the home. You make enough money to purchase additional appliances if you choose to do so

You begin to get paid from the day you step onto BMT! You don't get to actually see how much you've made until later weeks in training, but it's on the 1st and 15th typically.

Me and my boyfriend are both about to go to BMT I leave a month before him and we are getting married before I go in January. A recruiter told me that we would be stationed together with a house. And it’s easier if we do it before rather than after tech school. Is that true that we will be guaranteed to be stationed together?
Ashley Adams From a friend that told me it’s not always guaranteed. If they need them in another place they will send them off or sometimes they can send you a bit later but then you stay a bit longer. It’s not always easy to station both together. Hope I could help

You will *likely* get stationed together. If you are both Air Force, the AF does its best to put married couples together. I would marry before tech school that way your orders don't get all weird, some people got married during tech school after already getting orders (to North Dakota and Japan) and the individual who received Japan got their orders switched to ND. Not a 100% guarantee, but likely. Especially if you have pretty typical jobs that can go anywhere.
Update: Heading to Grand Forks ND , anything to do outdoors ? I won't have a car for a while and will be living on base.
When I was stationed there circa 1980, I was married and lived off-base until the last year. Most of my off-base activities was attending the University of North Dakota (UND) to earn my Computer Science degree.
Grand Forks AFB is about 15 miles west of Grand Forks (the intervening space seems to have started filling up since I was there). In 1980, there was no public transportation between the base and the town, except around Xmas time so that airmen could go into town for Xmas shopping. Another factor is an old joke the chaplain told us when we arrived: ND does have four seasons -- June, July, August, and winter. It turned out that he wasn't kidding (though winter only lasts from October to May).
Outdoor activities would mainly include winter sports such as hockey and cross-country skiing (downhill skiing usually involves a slope of 100-foot drop per quarter mile). I know that there's hunting, but I don't know where, which would also involve needing to have wheel. Plus I don't know where any ice rinks would be within walking distance (many city parks would create one, but I don't know about on-base). In the non-winter times, there's Turtle River to the west (never been). When my son returned to attend UND our old neighbor would take him out deer hunting, but I don't know where they went -- needless to say, you'd probably have to drive there.
Indoor activities on-base when I was there was the gym, the bowling alley, and the rec center. In my time there was no base theater and I don't know whether that has changed. Most of what there is to do in the winter is in town, for which you will need wheels (assuming there's still no public transportation available). If you do not have your own car, then you can try to hook up with a buddy who does have a car.
Our squadron had one airman with no transportation and so he became a barracks rat (I watched a tour of the current dorms at GFAFB, which are so much better than they were back in my time (I visited one once) ). Towards the end of the first winter he had a mental breakdown (admittedly, he did seem a bit sketchy the single time I had seen him long before that).
BTW, high Scandinavian depression and suicide rates (accompanied by cabin fever) are associated with light deprivation since the days are so much shorter the further you go north. Our shop in the Bomb Wing building had no windows, so in the winter it would be dark when you went in at 0730 and dark again when you left at 1630 -- if you didn't go out during the day, you would have spent five consecutive days without ever seeing the sun. It can have a psychological impact.
On the other side, daylight in the summer seems to be forever. I was always on swing shift (in order to free up my daytime for school). In my last summer there, we had thunderstorms and tornado watches practically every night. When I reported for duty at 1630, the sky would be clear, but there was a bank of clouds on the western horizon. About 2000 the fireworks would start. Then at midnight, the sky above was clear again and there was still enough twilight to make out a bank of storm clouds on the eastern horizon.
@@davidwise1302 Haha now I get what you mean by the 4 seasons , I might also add mosquitos . I appreciate the info I'm trying to make the best of it , so far I've been snowboarding, fishing , kayaking and trying to do more before the Ice Age hits again. Also you where rights about sunlight I'm on night shifts so I don't see the sun .I was on a 12hr shift 3 in 2 out but it got changed for 5 days 9 hr shifts , the town is growing slowly at least so there is some hope for the future if I get stuck here.

Fort Bliss is huge and a gorgeous base, you'll rarely have to leave base for groceries, shopping etc. (I've lived on that base for 7 years, this is from experience). Also, be prepared for desert heat (110 degrees) and 10 degrees in the winter. Also, avoid traffic on the east side if you can and pay attention to exits (I ended up in mexico). I know this may have had nothing to do with your question, but some things I feel like you should be prepared for.

Utilities are trash, water, electricity, etc. You are responsible for internet or cable.
Does BAH and living on base allow airman to save money for when they separate from the military.
If you do things right, being in the military can definitely help you save money. I receive BAH and live in a place where rent is lower than what I receive, so I end up pocketing extra to save.
random question but can you have eyelash extensions in the af?
Yes you can :) With all cosmetics, the key is just remaining within regulations: not contracting the uniform, modest, etc. Lash extensions, if done in good taste, are fine. I had some a while back and they were nice

They differ at every base, this one is small compared to some. It is a decent neighborhood size though, like a small town in total

You don't have to be married to live on base, but you have to wait until you're eligible to move out of the dorms first! That can usually take about three years.

Would you recommend to earn a degree in college then join Air Force or to do schooling during the Air Force?
I don't think it matters what you do- if you want to do one or the other, that's great! You get the same thing out of it, just in a different order. Higher education prior to joining doesn't make a huge difference on career.
Actually, it can be a crap shoot. Your ability to attend college on active duty will depend almost entirely on what arrangements you can make with your command. Before my induction, I talked with an Army veteran. The Army was gung-ho promoting education, but every time he enrolled in a college course he would have to drop out mid-semester because his unit went on a two-week bivouac. The services promote education, but the needs of the service always come first (as it should be).
It appears that most colleges and university have the classes you need during the daytime, not in the evening (community colleges are far better for that, since they try to market to students with day jobs -- where I was stationed did not have a community college). To me, the Air Force does offer better opportunities to pursue a degree since its assignments are much more stable (usually no bivouacs nor deployments) plus, if you are lucky enough to get into a 24/7 unit, you have a chance to be able to arrange to stay on a non-daytime shift (swing shift or mids) thus freeing up your daytime hours to attend class.
On active duty, I was able to stay on swing shift (and when we went to mandatory rotating shifts, I was still able to just ping-pong between swing and mids). BUT MY SUPERVISOR COULD HAVE DISAGREED. My friend from the Comm Center, also a Computer Science student, was on dayshift and his supervisor promised that he could take time off for classes, but then every time he had to go to class his supervisor nixed it because of the traffic load. He finally had to go Palace Chase (voluntary separation from active duty to serve as a mandatory driller in the reserves) in order to complete his degree. The Comm Center should have been a 24/7 operation, so why he couldn't have been transferred to swing shift as I had been, I don't understand.
Back to your original question about doing college before enlistment (probably too late already), get as much college out of the way as you can before you enlist. Old advice keeps getting outdated (like budgeting a fourth of your income to housing), but what I was brought up on was that instead of going directly to a four-year with its high costs, go to a community college for your first two years and then transfer to a four-year. At that community college, you can get your general-ed classes out of the way along with the introductory classes for your major. Then when you get to the four-year, you can concentrate more on your major's classes. An extra plus is that most professors teaching those introductory classes at a four-year don't even want to be there, but they somehow drew the short straw (at one Navy advancement exam, they saw us Chiefs (who administer the advancement exams) playing rock-paper-scissors to determine which one of use would read the long boring exam instructions).
In my own case, I had earned a BA German (which is not very marketable), but I wanted to learn electronics and then, through my USAF training in electronic computer systems repairmanship, computer science. Virtually all of my general-ed requirements had been met by my previous classes, so the only classes I had to take for a computer science degree were computer science classes -- I had to also take one management course for my AS from the Community College of the Air Force, but I took care of that through a DANTES exam (plus I was taking the actual class at the same time).
So the final answer. Operational Risk Management (ORM -- I got that training from the Navy, but I assume it's universal) requires that you assess all risks and then plan to mitigate them should they arise. Earning a degree before you enlist would be good. Planning for earning a degree once you enlist could be sketchy, though the more general-ed classes you could have gotten out of the way beforehand the better. All branches offer programs for getting college credit, so learn what those are and take advantage of them. Depending on various factors, tuition assistance could be available. When I was in the war (circa-1980's USAF-speak intro for a "war story" meaning "when I was in the Air Force" -- I have absolutely no idea what the current parlance is, since when I used it on an active duty member around 2010 he reacted as if I had deployed somewhere), the Air Force routinely paid 75% of every single member's tuition, but then after I made E-5 they suddenly had a policy of paying 90% of the tuition for E-5s and above, part of a retention effort.
So bottom line is that if you are intending to enlist in order to pursue your education, get as much of the general-education requirements out of the way first.
