Hello my friends! I hope you are all having a wonderful start to your week! Just a heads up, we have a holiday this week, right in the middle of the week… So I had planned to film part 2 of the w and a this week, but that may not happen. Either way, I will do my best and keep you posted on Monday! ❤
@@dawnbaker9274 I just added a link to a video with a full explanation ❤️ Check out the description and you will see it. Thanks for asking! I had forgotten to link that earlier!
Family comes first!!! Chag Sameach .... ❤ 🧀🍦 Enjoy all the dairy and most importantly CHEESECAKE FOR BREAKFAST. (I have the palate of a four-year-old what can I say?). Hope you enjoyed the adventure of looking for The Seven Species, I still remember watching your whole family at the store and everybody picked something out. I just edited this because I had a question about GF. Never mind. I need to watch the whole video and then post but I get so excited I can't wait. See you in a week. 🤗
I just purchased a bread maker which actually arrived today, to make things much easier on myself, I just don't have the time to spend hours waiting for it to rise and then knead inbetween.
It gets better! Her daughter often helps make dessert and arrange the Shabbat flowers. She has the sweetest but Toddleriest Toddler EVER and Little Dude who I have a feeling has become the quintessential middle child and has a future in negotiating and deal making extraordinaire.
I am not Jewish, but I recently found out my mother has Eastern European and Ashkenazi Jewish DNA. We had no idea! ❤ I have always loved learning about other peoples faiths and I am so thankful you are willing to open up your life to us. Thank You!❤
Hi my dad did a dna and we also have Ashkanasie Jewish heritage, of which I am very proud, I too am not Jewish, but when I was young we would get asked if we were Jewish, especially my dad. I love this channel, been watching a couple of years now. By the way I am from England.
I'm from North Carolina, but was raised out west in Washington state. I never met a jewish person in my life until I moved to Maryland. I think when people came to America they often left everything behind them. It's sad how some things are lost to history.
Chana, I recommend you store evaporated milk in a can. You can find kosher. Yes it isn’t the same as fresh. You can add vanilla to enhance flavor and you dilute 1:1. I live in Hurricane Alley and that has helped me many a time during power outages. I learned to keep 1 - 2 weeks of food that I would eat. Longest I have been without power is about 20 days.
I'm so glad you got home safely in that storm and that you got your milk! Yes, the weather has been crazy in Florida too! We had a tornado warning last week - not only from my weather app but also the emergency alert with the loud alarm sound on my phone. BH, the tornado missed us! The Chabad house in Tallahassee was sideswiped by a tornado a couple of weeks ago but BH no one was hurt! I've been tempted for a while now by your sourdough baking skills and have been thinking about trying it. It actually looks easier to make than 'regular' dough. I don't see you kneading the dough (or am I missing that part?). I love kneading; it's very calming and relaxing but I can't do that any longer. Be well!
The bread looked so delicious, straight out of the oven would have been amazing. Baby firefly is now such a little man. I’m glad you pulled over in the storm, I do the same thing and idiots go racing past me. Accidents in the making.
Oh my goodness those storms!!!!! I haven’t been following the news so I didn’t know y’all were having a streak of bad weather! Glad you were safe driving! That kind of rain is scary! Do you ever make cinnamon rolls with your sourdough? My mom made some when I was a kid and they were excellent! She quit making them because she didn’t want to gain weight! 😂
Oh I have had cinnamon rolls on my mind so it’s so funny you said that!!!! I want to make them, but I haven’t made them with sourdough yet. Maybe soon!
You can freeze milk. There’s just two of us and I buy 3 gallons at a time and put it in my big freezer in the basement. Do you have a big freezer? You can also buy shelf stable milk for emergencies.
Yes! We freeze milk too! We just were out at the point of the storm. The store restocks on Sunday or Monday, so I go to the store Monday or Tuesday. The storm was Monday morning.
You asked for some new recipes. This is good. Margarita Chicken with Yogurt Sauce Boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 tbsp butter 1 Tbsp olive oil 1/4 cup bottle margarita mix non alcohol 1 tablespoon grated lime peel 1 container (6 oz) Key lime pie yogurt 1 teaspoon grated lime peel 4 lime slices Steps 1 marinate chicken in margarita mix and 1 tablespoon lime peel and yogurt. Cover; refrigerate 30 minutes to. 2 Put butter and olive oil in skillet. 3 Add chicken in skillet with marinate and cook until done. (165°F). Top lime slices.
Question: Is there food that is always considered Kosher? If there were no Kosher food available due to weather or other disasters, how would you manage?
@@LauraRogers-xu1fi in a matter of life and death we can eat anything. But let’s say I’m in a very remote place, fresh fruits and vegetables are an example of something I could eat.
I think that it's great that your son wants to make gluten-free bread. It will stand him good in the future as he learns this and may go on to cooking other gluten-free food. It is a great example to your children that both their Father and Mother cook and bake. These are skills that everyone should have basic learning in, particularly when dietary needs are so different. When older if Mom gets sick then baking gluten-free muffins for outing treats helps out. Also Dad's traditional dishes getting taught to the children to carry on to the next generations.

If I had no idea how to make sour dough and sour dough starter, could I just use the ballerina farm recipe? Do I have to buy a lot of expensive equipment in order to follow her recipe? Thanks ❤❤❤ love your videos as always!
You don't need anything special. You can use a colander instead of a basket, and a tea towel instead of a special cloth. You don't need the special whisk either. You will need some sourdough starter :)

Hi Chana! Sounds like you’ve been through a hurricane. We had crazy storms here in Louisiana last week, also. We travel to Central America often, and the stores there sell a brand of milk on the shelves, in boxes, called Dos Pinos. Their website says it is kosher, but the milking of the cow is not observed by a rabbi. If that is something you can use, they probably sell it in Latino markets in the US. It tastes really good. Have a great week, enjoy the holiday, and hopefully no more crazy weather!
i love all the sourdough baking youre doing...youre inspiring me...question...are you using sourdough in place of challah at shabbat? im so caught into old school of having challah but quite honestly we love sourdough too...curious...
Glad to hear you and home all are okay. Question - where there are times of stores closed, power outages - do observant Jews typically feel obligated still to do a ‘proper’ Shabbat meals? Or could you do an easier meal plan?
That is a lot of rain! I hope the sun finds a way to reach you this week and that the power is back at your friends' house. Have a very peaceful (and dry 🌞) week! 💚
Baby Firefly isn’t a baby anymore. He is so grown up. How does that happen so quickly? Time is a thief. My youngest grand is starting pre-k in the Fall. I am pretty sure it was just last week I was in the delivery room with my daughter watching her being born. So excited to see how your son’s gluten free sourdough turns out. I know you all are also. Have a blessed week, holiday, and Shabbat.
have you considered buying shelf stable milk? IDK if you can drink that but if you can find it, it would be good to keep on hand since you don't like other "milks".
Glad you had minimal damage due to the storms down there. I Have family friends and an aunt in and around the DFW metroplex and got updates on everything. Some did have power outages and some didn't, but all were fine. The clip of you in the parking lot with the rain 🌧️ barreling down reminded me of El Niño in 1998 when it rained literally rained for 40 days and 40 nights in SoCal. As a result of the rain and her job as a home health nurse for a hospital, the transmission in the car we had at the time flooded out and my mom had to get fixed and not for the first time over the next 7 or 8 years. The apple kugel looked delicious 😋
Where I am in Melbourne, Australia. We have just had the bird flu. Lots of chicken farms have lost their birds. Which now follows on to the eggs, which they are predicting no or shortages of eggs for over a year.
This has probably been asked before, so I’m sorry if I’m repeating the question. Have you tried Carbmaster milk? It’s a Kroger branded product. I don’t know if it is everywhere Kroger is, but in my city it’s OU kosher.
@@jaroffireflies it is. I get the chocolate flavored carbmaster, which is fat free. It tastes like full fat milk with Hershey’s chocolate syrup mixed in.
Wishing you and your family a chag sameach as we celebrate Shavuos this week. I never have liked cheesecake but some delicious ice cream is definitely called for. I am working tomorrow on the border of Lakewood at a Pediatric GI/neurology office. I love your channel and hope that someday when you come back to Lakewood to visit family, maybe we can meet too. Be well, my friend, Zai G'zunt.
I keep spare milk in the freezer. Full fat milk because the water makes it thin. Well, in my mind it does. Happy to hear that you (and the house) are all ok.
Oh. The paddle you're using to mix the sourdough is interesting to me, as we've always used (wooden) sourdough sticks to mix it. Not sure if that's an Irish thing or not, but I used acacia sticks. $20 or so.
Happy Monday! I have been following you for ages and have truly enjoyed watching your videos. I do have a question about the sourdough. Why did you take the small bit out and put in foil and put in the oven? I am not Jewish but I have always been curious about the traditions and your faith. Please know I am asking with the upmost respect and kindness. ❤❤❤❤ from Franklin Indiana!
Hello Tiffany! Thank you so much for being here! I linked a video in the description that explains exactly what I did with pulling off the bit of dough ❤️
There are some shelf-stable boxed milks that are kosher. I think some varieties of Parmalat are. You might want to keep a box or two for dire coffee emergencies, lol.
Ms. Chana, I posted a picture of my shelving unit for my food storage. My dad set it up today. Slowly we are getting my apartment in good order. I'd like my dad to store my clarinets or sell them somewhere. I unfortunately no longer play. I have a really nice wooden Buffet clarinet that must have costed like 1000 dollars, but it's old and probably needs a new mouthpiece, and new quarks and pads. Maybe they could go to a new student who can't afford one. I was talking to my friend who got a nice clarinet, and she was able to sell it back and broke even.
I saw this short on TH-cam, forget where it was, maybe Texas? But they were running to the back of the restaurant to get away from the windows. They completely shattered. I was just like OMG. Glad you are all okay though.
Was that "little dude" helping at the grocery store? He has grown so much! Also those apples looked so good. I haven't found nice apples in my local stores recently.
Omgoodness!! I LOVE Ballerina Farm! Her recipies make Sourdough sooooo much easier! Im waiting on my supplies to finally get here and ill be making my Sourdough sometime this week!
Hi Chana, hope the storms have finally passed & everywhere dried up and back to normal ! The weather here in the UK has been very mixed, mostly grey & rainy, does not seem that summer is going to appear anytime soon. But that's Okay because every where is green & lush. Hope you enjoy your holiday later on this week. See you next time :) PS for some reason I can't post any cute little emoji !!
Thank you so much Clare! Rain has mostly cleared up here, just a few spotty storms. But nothing like this day! So fun that everything is so green by you! I always imagine the UK as so beautiful with lots of gardens :)
@@jaroffireflies I have a little courtyard style garden with a Koi pond & love to fill pots with flowers for the summer, last year I grew tomatoes, bell peppers & chilli not gotten around to planting any this year though.🥰🌱🌻🌼

Good morning from central Illinois. Sourdough bread is my favorite and homemade is the absolute best! Guests at your dinner table are in for a real treat 😊. Are you making cheesecake for Shavuot this week?
A friend if mine in the Dallas/Ft Worth area was without power for a week! Glad y’all didn’t lose power & are ok. We’ve had some crazy weather this spring!
Oh wow! Yes, many people we knew lost power for a week. Some for a few days, some not at all. We counted ourselves lucky that we just lost power for a few moments, so no affect for us other than resetting clocks.
We living the same here: hotter weeks and then a lot of rain. And daily shortage of light system. Be my guest. I can relate. And I living in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. Hope everything went well at the end.
Everything did turn out ok in the end :) see enjoyed a visit with friends we don’t see so often and everyone we know had power back on by the end of the week!
Hey there chana I wish you and your family and your dog to a happy Shavuot and my heart goes to Israel and your family greetings from Bern Switzerland your great fan, Andrew
I would get so fat in Brooklyn. Im skinny, but i would leave fat. Those cakes look delicious. One day i will go there with an empty suitcase and buy everything.
Rainy days are fun, except when you get caught in a storm while out and about. Baby Firefly isn't so much a baby anymore! 🥺 It's always unnerving when you realize they aren't gonna stay tiny forever. Glad you got the milk. I'd be stressing about that, too. Wish I was a bread baker but that just never took me over. I do have a bread machine. We used to make bread in the machine a lot when our daughter was little. The new machine hasn't even been used yet and I've had it for nearly 8 years! LOL That's what happens when your husband cuts out carbs and you know you should too! LOL Hope Shabbat went well and your guests had a great time. Love and prayers coming your way as always.💚
Wow you have had some weather! Glad all is well at your home. I wonder if oldest son might make a project out of seeing what else can be made gluten free that turns out well. When I saw Baby F on the step, I thought, "Little Dude," so maybe Little Dude has grown up enough to be bigger little dude, and Baby F littler little dude!
Great question! That has happened. We make sure light switches and things like that are where we would want them before Shabbat, and we prepare the best we can, and hope for the best!
I heard about the storms in the news, I live in Canada & it seems like the USA is having a really bad time - I'm glad that you all are okay. I agree with mariskjefras, I like how the community takes care of each other, it wonderful!
I know you said you don't like milk replacements, and neither do I, but Silk almond milk creamer is delicious. My husband drinks oatmilk 🤮 and I cannot stand that. The Silk creamer does not have that weird plant milk taste, you know the one. All you taste is the flavoring of the creamer.
Danish whisk..;) Have you ever measured the dough & water in cup & spoon form so that you never have to weigh anymore? ❤ Farmhouse on Boon has been my sourdough inspiration, I watched her playlist on Sourdough & was inspired, its so much simpler ..❤ not so much measuring & exactly g..
Yes! Danish whisk! That’s what it’s called :) Thank you 😊 As for measuring with cups, I prefer to always use weight measurements in baking, it’s so much more accurate. Especially in my gluten free baking it makes such a huge difference so now it’s just what I do :)
Glad to hear you are doing okay with all these storms. That sourdough looks great! I know how hard it is to bake when you have littles, you seem to manage it well. When mine were little I would get up really early to get my bread baked before the littles woke up. I don’t think I could have managed it with them awake. Too bad your park outing got rained out, but at least the children got some outdoor time. BTW, even if you hear thunder way in the distance, it is no longer safe to be outdoors. Lightning can strike ahead of a storm. Chag Sameach, Happy Shavuot!
I definitely do a lot early before the kids wake up too :) And the good thing about this recipe is that there is a little to do at various times, so I can pop in for a few minutes here and there and it works much easier than my challah recipe for me :)
I so wish my floors were all on one level. We have hallway and lounge on one level (slope in middle of lounge) step down to dining room and utility, step down to kitchen. Upstairs has 2 bedrooms on one level and bedroom and bathroom on another.
We got stuck in the pouring rain a few weeks ago I've never seen so much rain. Then again last week it was just pouring so heavy and it was a lot. The only good thing is it made the cicadas calm down for a while which was nice. The rain has been crazy this year.
For next years storms, I want to have sliced bread and lunch meat in the freezer. More drinks too. Also need a chargeable that will run a fan. Phone charger was great!

Thank you!
I’m so hungry for sourdough now!
Have you ever made it? It’s really fun to do :) if I lived in NY I’d bake you some!
Missing your posts. Hope you were able to relax an d get ready for school.
Thank you!
Ah, food prep and preparing for guests while also coping with stormy weather. Take it easy.
❤️❤️❤️
Baby Firefly is so cute!
Thank you Debra!
i love all the sourdough baking youre doing...youre inspiring me...question...are you using sourdough in place of challah at shabbat? im so caught into old school of having challah but quite honestly we love sourdough too...curious...
Yes 😊 Mr Firefly asked me to only make sourdough from now on and I’m totally ok with that!
Glad to hear you and home all are okay.
Question - where there are times of stores closed, power outages - do observant Jews typically feel obligated still to do a ‘proper’ Shabbat meals? Or could you do an easier meal plan?
We will do our best ❤️ There was a lot of sharing that weekend!
That is a lot of rain! I hope the sun finds a way to reach you this week and that the power is back at your friends' house. Have a very peaceful (and dry 🌞) week! 💚
Thank you!!! Most everyone got power by Shabbat, but not in time to be home for Shabbat! But it worked out ok for everyone ❤️
Time does go by so very quickly!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Praying that everyone is safe with all the storms!! Hope you had a wonderful Shabbat
Thank you so much!
Wow on the sourdough!!!
Thank you Rebecca 😊
have you considered buying shelf stable milk? IDK if you can drink that but if you can find it, it would be good to keep on hand since you don't like other "milks".
They don’t sell shelf stable milk of the type I need. But it would be quite useful!
We didn't have power for
4 1/2 days after the storm. We have a huge pile of branches out front.
Oh man! Glad y’all got power back!
Can you share the name of your smoothie blender ? It’s awesome.
As a Muslim Moroccan Amazigh woman I wish all the Jewish people a
happy Shavuot❤❤❤ 😊😊😊 I really love your channel
Thank you so very much! ❤️❤️❤️ We love Morocco and it’s people 🇲🇦
@@jaroffireflies 😘😘
They say the grocery store only has enough food for 3 days. Learned that during the situation.
Oh yes, I agree. When we have ice storms, the stores run out of everything after a few days.
Sourdough is so much fun! I'm not a huge fan of the hard crusty bread but I have been loving sourdough bagels and sourdough sandwich bread.
I love the crusty bread! lol! But mr firefly is more like you, so I don’t make it too crusty :)!
Oh wow I almost forgot about El Nino! Ya, that was a lot of rain. I didn't live there then, but I remember hearing all about it.
More are predicted in your state & also very hot weather I have a friend in Arizona which is over 100 degrees for days ! Be safe love sourdough bread
Thank you Alicia!
Where I am in Melbourne, Australia. We have just had the bird flu. Lots of chicken farms have lost their birds. Which now follows on to the eggs, which they are predicting no or shortages of eggs for over a year.
Oh wow that’s so sad! I hope the farmers will all be ok! That must be devastating for them
This has probably been asked before, so I’m sorry if I’m repeating the question. Have you tried Carbmaster milk? It’s a Kroger branded product. I don’t know if it is everywhere Kroger is, but in my city it’s OU kosher.
Hello Brittany! No, I’ve never even heard of that milk. Is it good?
@@jaroffireflies it is. I get the chocolate flavored carbmaster, which is fat free. It tastes like full fat milk with Hershey’s chocolate syrup mixed in.
Good morning! I totally enjoy your videos. What we have in common is love of family! Your dedication is admirable.👍🏽💙
Thank you so much Robin 🤗
Wishing you and your family a chag sameach as we celebrate Shavuos this week. I never have liked cheesecake but some delicious ice cream is definitely called for. I am working tomorrow on the border of Lakewood at a Pediatric GI/neurology office. I love your channel and hope that someday when you come back to Lakewood to visit family, maybe we can meet too. Be well, my friend, Zai G'zunt.
I’ll be enjoying some ice cream too 😊💐 Chag sameach! Hope it is a beautiful Torah filled holiday for you!
$20 or so.
I also keep milk in the freezer now :) Very handy to have on hand!
Good idea!
Awesome!
How did you meet your husband?
I made a video on that, here’s the link:

Nice to see you as always. Sounds like Baby Firefly wants to help you vacuum and cook. 😂. Have a lovely week.
He’s always wanting to be involved ❤️ This morning he helped me with dough!
I saw this short on TH-cam, forget where it was, maybe Texas? But they were running to the back of the restaurant to get away from the windows. They completely shattered. I was just like OMG. Glad you are all okay though.
Sounds like Texas! It was intense
Was that "little dude" helping at the grocery store? He has grown so much! Also those apples looked so good. I haven't found nice apples in my local stores recently.
Yup! He’s such a helper!
Another excellent video! The Orthodox have a beautiful way of life! I am not becoming Orthodox but I am having a Reform Beit Din and Mikvah.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
Mazal Tov , best wishes
I loved the video, you seemed so light at heart and content. I actually sighed when it was over 💙
Aw thank you Susan! This is the best comment ❤️❤️❤️ Made my day!
Omgoodness!! I LOVE Ballerina Farm! Her recipies make Sourdough sooooo much easier! Im waiting on my supplies to finally get here and ill be making my Sourdough sometime this week!
Happy baking!
@@63Littlemouse that all sounds so lovely! 🪴
That apple kugel looks delicious. Are there any other fruits used for that dessert? Hope your Shabbat was enjoyable. You and Mr. Firefly are very hospitable.
I’ve seen people do it with mixed berries, but I definitely prefer apple :)🍎
I had to pause the video to say I LOVE your dress in the beginning of the video.
Aw thank you so much!!! It’s one of my favorites too 😊 I try to invest in a quality linen dress over year or two
With Shavuot beginning at sundown tonight, Chag Sameach!
Thank you Jan!
What a wonderful park, surrounded by naturr and fun tobogans! 😊
Wow the rain is so intens! 😅It's fun but is better when you are in home🤭.
The rustic bread looks perfect! And is so practic for make diferent meals.
Have a nice day Chana 🌸🤍
Thank you so much :)
Good morning from central Illinois. Sourdough bread is my favorite and homemade is the absolute best! Guests at your dinner table are in for a real treat 😊. Are you making cheesecake for Shavuot this week?
Hi Monika! Yes! I’m making cheesecake tomorrow! ❤️
Tornadoes all over TX. 😢 With four kids you become resourceful, and you are very resourceful!
✨💖✨
Thank you for your kind words ❤️
Thank you very much Andrew!
Your dress looks so comfortable
Thank you! It absolutely is :)
Thank you os much!
Just love your posts ❤
Thank you! So happy you enjoy them!
I wanted to let you know that your dress is very pretty. Hope you get a break from the rain.
Thank you so much Kathy!
They have all grown so much :)
I have a question: What if the power is out and comes back on Shabbat, causing electric appliances etc. to start?
Great question! That has happened. We make sure light switches and things like that are where we would want them before Shabbat, and we prepare the best we can, and hope for the best!
@@jaroffireflies Thank you!
@@H2_O2 you’re so welcome!
Oh yes the storms we had were not fun. Another Texas adventure. !
Absolutely!
Family first always, dear Chana!
So true! Thank you Colleen!
I heard about the storms in the news, I live in Canada & it seems like the USA is having a really bad time - I'm glad that you all are okay. I agree with mariskjefras, I like how the community takes care of each other, it wonderful!
I’m sure it’s not as bad as the news makes it out to be. At least here, the news makes the weather seem absolutely horrendous lol
Love your video:)❤️
Thank you Linda! ❤️
Thanks for the tip!
Good to see you! Take care of yourself and your family: don't stress yourself out!
Thank you! 😊
I so wish my floors were all on one level. We have hallway and lounge on one level (slope in middle of lounge) step down to dining room and utility, step down to kitchen. Upstairs has 2 bedrooms on one level and bedroom and bathroom on another.
We have a lot of that in our neighborhood, I’m really glad we don’t have it in our house
@@jaroffireflies I'm selling my house, pray for level floors for us 😂

We got stuck in the pouring rain a few weeks ago I've never seen so much rain. Then again last week it was just pouring so heavy and it was a lot. The only good thing is it made the cicadas calm down for a while which was nice. The rain has been crazy this year.
That’s been us too! Sooooo much rain!!!!
For next years storms, I want to have sliced bread and lunch meat in the freezer. More drinks too. Also need a chargeable that will run a fan. Phone charger was great!
Very smart!
