    I think the closest thing to a monk in Judaism is a Nazir like Samson was. It’s usually a temporary vow to abstain from wine, cutting hair and some other things but not marriage. Practically no one becomes a nadir today because to end the vow requires bringing an offering to the temple and since there is no temple in our days one would be rendered a permanent nazir which is rarely good or desirable

    As a cradle Catholic, I've always found Judaism interesting because of how different it is, so I appreciate that TH-cam randomly decided to recommend a recent Costco video of yours. I enjoyed your wholesomeness + sense of humor, so I subscribed!
    But I'd like to correct you on something you said toward the end of this video about Catholicism, and our nuns and monks.
    **They're not the pinnacle of our religion or even of our religious life.** They're just living out a different vocation by joining the religious life. My vocation is to be a wife and mom; theirs is to be a nun, monk, or a priest. So they, for instance, spend hours praying whereas I don't (and you probably don't either) b/c that's their vocation. But they're not higher in the totem pole of religious life than a mom or a husband.
    They simply have a religious vocation and I'm in the laity: but both "types" of vocations are extremely important in Catholicism and can't exist without the other. Families, aka "domestic churches" in our religion, are the foundation/the building block of our Catholic communities. Not one Catholic vocation (incl. parenthood, the priesthood, etc.) is superior to another.

    I have a good friend who is very knowledgeable in the three abrahamic religions, especially Judaism and he learned in a secular Beit Midrash.
    Sometime we are talking about all things related to Judaism, I'm always asking him questions and he explain thing's by
    asking me a question.
    A few days ago I asked him something about Purim,and he asked me "do you know who doesn't mentioned in the megillah?"

    Thank you for sharing - it's always so interesting to hear your thoughts on your chosen religion :) When it comes to what happens after we die, my thought is always that this is something that God takes care of, so that means we don't ever really have to worry about the details all that much - anything God does is done perfectly, so what's the worry? It's the here and now, where we are supposed to be carrying out the work that God gives us to do, that we should focus on. We can make mistakes and mess things up, but when we die, our souls are in God's care, so whatever happens then will be exactly as it should be.

    I have two follow-up questions:
    1.)
    Can a non-Jewish person go to a Jewish/kosher restaurant? To enjoy Jewish cuisine for example? Or maybe they would be allowed in but frowned upon since they didn't know Jewish customs related to meals?
    And 2.)
    You're not allowed to write on Shabbat. But are you (or are children) allowed to draw or paint?
    Fall is my favourite season too! I can never wait for summer to be over.
    And I loved how baby firefly crawled across the floor when you showed the books!

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great questions! Yes, anyone can go to a kosher restaurant. I’ve taken non Jewish family and friends and coworkers over the years to kosher restaurants. Many restaurants depend on the customers who aren’t Jewish bad well because their aren’t enough Jews in an area to sustain a restaurant. And for the kids drawing on Shabbat, no that would not be allowed.

    This is fab, thank you! I have questions :D So during the time how aren't intimate, can you talk about sex? I'm guessing self-satisfaction is forbidden? What happens if you have spotting mid-cycle? What about if you have long periods but short cycles, so you're past your fertile window by the time you can have sex again? What happens during perimenopause when a woman's cycles become less regular? What about in full menopause, does she still have to seperate? Do older post-menopause couples share a bed all the time? What happens if the mikvah night falls on shabbat, can you still go, or is it closed? I know the video is from a little while ago now :) thanks for sharing, it was very interesting!

    Also, my question is, you talked about doing a video on why you and Mr Firefly have two beds a long time ago, but I don't think you ever did. So my question is why and do most Jewish couples have two beds? At least your hubby doesn't steal all the blankets, lol. Much love Chana hope you gave a lovely week.

    • @lindaversil1121
      @lindaversil1121 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because when a woman is niddah (period) she is unavailable to her husband until it’s over and she goes to Mikva. They can’t even touch or sleep in the same bed. It’s called shomer negiyah and Orthodox Jews do this because it’s a very important Jewish law that has to be done. Jews are very strict about niddah laws

      It’s definitely an intensive prep, but personally not a terribly difficult one for me. I think most of my friends would probably say that’s the hardest holiday though.

    This is a wonderful video. I love these, I feel we learn together. Tefilla for my father's neshama. I have been studying the after life. We definitely believe in it, every mitzvah, everything we do is setting our place in the world to come. Such as when Moshiach comes, the dead will be resurrected and meet us in Israel.

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In all honestly, there is no way to balance. Every time you say yes to one thing, you say no to something else. Despite what popular opinion wants us to believe, we cannot do it all. That said, I generally sacrifice sleep :)

    I think about afterlife and reward and punishment like this. We, humans, are told to be partners in creation. So, like in a company, an employee cares about compensation and not to be fired, but if a person is a partner, he doesn’t care about compensation as much as he cares about the future of the company. For humans, “company” is this world and we are sent here to work on it and improving be it, so even though we know that doing a good job brings about compensation, it is more important for us to take care of the “company”, i e, improving and elevating this world. In other words, even though we do have a concept of what happens after death, we don’t focus on it, because we don’t consider this physical world unimportant or hopeless.
    Btw, the reward and punishment in afterlife in Judaism is proportional to the person’s actions. So, it is very rare that a person gets something like “eternal damnation”. One has to be a Hitler or a Stalin to get there. Most normal people get some amount of purgatory and then go to heaven. And, in heaven, the more righteous the person was, the higher will be the reward.
    Also, jews believe in reincarnation. Sometimes, a soul gets sent back for one reason or another. Most likely it is given a second chance at something they didn’t do right in the previous life.

    Hi, Chana ☺Nice Q&A. I had to look up bergamot. I need to find some to experience the scent myself. People think I'm weird because I really like the smell of diesel exhaust. It reminds me of my dad who was a truck driver. Fresh bread, vanilla and babies are among the greatest smells in the world. 😍 As for a book club, that does sound intriguing but it's a lot to add to your plate. You might have to go biweekly with your regular videos in order to fit it in. I guess I have a question that may or may not have been asked: are you allowed to display affection between you and your husband around the kids? By that I mean a 'drive-by' kiss while he's at the stove cooking, a hug when he gets home, holding hands, etc. I suppose it sounds weird but one wonders when it's not common knowledge. Got a smile out of seeing Baby Firefly make a "crawl-by" on the floor when you were showing a book cover! 😅Sending good wishes for the rest of your week💚

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your kind words! Great question. Yes, we can display affection in front of our kids. In general Orthodox Jews are not into public displays of affection, because we consider that to be part of our private relationship and we don’t want to share that with the world.
