    Couple of fun facts:
The reason why M version of 1 series if called 1M instead of M1 like any other M car (M2, M3, M4, M5) is because this car used M1 name.
M1 was supposed to be built by Lamborghini. That's why road legal version has two BMW logos on the back because M1 looked like Lamborghini's of that era (like you mentioned at 11:45).
New XM SUV is the only BMW that has two BMW logo's on the top part of back window like the M1 did.
Version of M88 engine from M1 was also used in E24 635CSi and E28 M5, the first ever M5.
M1 and i8 are only mid engined sports cars made by BMW.
It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of the most famous automotive designer.
Some of the cars he designed are: Ferrari 250 GT, DeTomaso Mangusta, Maserati Ghibli, Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT, VW Golf Mk1, DeLorean, Alfa Romeo 159,, Alfa Romeo Brera, Lancia Delta, Lancia Thema, Lotus Espirit, VW Karmann Ghia, 1st gen VW Passat, Fiat Panda, Fiat Uno, Fiat Punto.
He also designed Iveco buses and vans.

BMW M1, VW Golf MK1, DeLorean, Lancia Delta imo they have something in common, kind of sexy edgy.

    • @arconeagain
      @arconeagain 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The DeLorean pinched the look of the Lancia Monte Carlo. The designer was Italian afterall. That angular design with sharp sort of edges can be seen in quite a few cars, as we know. The quarter panel look is seen in cars like Audis and NSUs and the Lancia Beta, in my opinion.
The reference to Lamborghinis of the 70s would be the classic wedge design. This was arguably started by the man who designed the Miura, Lancia Stratos, Fiat X19, and the Diablo.

When I was young in the 80s, the M1 was already a legend, you only knew it from TV and magazines... you never saw it on the street.
Then, as an electrician apprentice, I had to re-install an apartment's electrical system in the neighboring town... and there was actually a white M1in in the yard.
That day I “coincidentally” had to constantly grab something from my work bus so I could sneak around the car every time.

His M1 was that bright orange that BMW had back then. The color was between Hemi orange and the orange of a 1970 Camaro.

    Some BMW M1 facts:
The design dates back to the BMW Turbo concept of 1972.
The M1 was developed to race in the World Sports Car Championship but the rules changed, rendering it redundant. F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and BMW's motorsport head came up with the Procar concept as a use for the race car. However, teams did modify it to fit the Group 4 and Group 5 racing classes and the M1 actually had an extensive and successful racing career on both sides of the Atlantic, including Le Mans.
400 cars were built. As BMW didn't have the ability to build them in-house, manufacture was contracted to Lamborghini. But Lamborghini itself was the verge of bankruptcy and didn't have the resources and couldn't achieve the expected quality. BMW took the project back and the final batches were built by BMW Motorsport.
With 286hp, the road car isn't all that fast, even by the standards of the day. But it is, by all accounts, a delight to drive. The handling is pin-sharp and it's notably refined - you could easily do a very long day at the wheel.
Values are now around the $500k for a road car, maybe a million for a race car with good history.
There's one that raced at Le Mans in a livery created by Andy Warhol. That's probably worth high 8 figures, but it's highly unlikely to ever come onto the market.

    Hey Ian,
this car and it's story is really awesome so this is a great vehicle to learn more about. The dual BMW badges on the rear were put there so you wouldn't accidentally mistake it for a Lamborghini, although the bodywork was designed by the famous Designer Giorgio Giugiaro and Lamborghini ended up involved in the construction. The Wikipedia list of Giugiaro's car designs is crazy iconic. It's worth talking about this car's creation&construction since BMW decided to contract Lamborghini who were facing huge financial troubles around the time they built it which was supposed to help the company survive. Nonetheless, the factory did get shut down during the production process so BMW had to get the unfinished chassis, tools&machines back from the Italian government to build all the homologation street cars. Lamborghini's financials in the 70s&80s were completely FUBAR.
The M88 engine of this car is a real beast of a NA I6, almost like a German NASCAR engine. I could write about the quirks of this glorious hunk of metal for hours but I'll hold myself to just one thing: this engine has individual throttle bodies BUT it does NOT have butterfly valves! Instead BMW went for a cool quirky system called "Flachschieber" in German which translates to "Flat slider" in English. Instead of having a tilting disk the diameter of the intake at the middle of the throttle body like any regular car, there is one flat piece of metal with a hole for each intake that slides on a rail half way down the intake runners. Depending on throttle position, the slider moves to allow more air into the cylinders. The real advantage of the design comes in at full throttle when the intake runners are literally empty, no vertical butterfly valves in the way to disturb the airflow which helps such high compression naturally aspirated engines draw undisturbed and therefore more air.
Cheers Ian, I hope you and yours are well. Cheers from Germany.

Interesting - at 8:54 you can see "Project Four Racing" written on the rear of the M1 - Project Four was Ron Dennis's company which took over the McLaren F1 team. Project Four (along with BS Fabrications and Osella) built the Group 4 M1s for the Procar Championship - they also entered a car themselves for Niki Lauda and subsequently Hans-Joachim Stuck.
The "MP4" designation on the McLaren F1 cars from 1981-2016 stood for Marlboro (later McLaren after changing sponsors) Project Four.

I live in Germany and I can tell you I saw this car (road version) only once. I think the price is above 700.000€ if you are lucky to find one to buy. There is a newer version of this car wich I personly like more. These ones are also rare but easier to find than the original first one from 1979.

_Pantera's_ are my thing and the first race version of the M1 I saw I thought it was one. Lovely lines. They didn't look so good as stock road cars but they had a bit of dash with the pop-up headlights and rarity value.

I have a Mustang with the Coyote V8, it's a great engine by any metric. But inline 6's are awesome. I used to have a Skyline R34 with a turbocharged I6 and loved every bit of it. I wish there was a modern, relatively affordable car with a naturally aspirated, higher displacement, high revving inline 6.

I got to watch a bunch of the M1 race cars at the Nürburgring, got a few pictures I sent to a BMW enthusiast back home, he was basically cursing me, as there were not only 1, but 4 of them there. :P
One of them as far as I saw at least, even took to the GP track, there were so many cool old cars racing on the GP track during the event, I think it was called Legends or something? a lot of classic race cars and such on display at the depot at the GP track, from Group-B cars to like 30s or 40s F1 cars, I'm not good with years.
They even took a Shelby Daytona on track, which is a car worth like $1.5 million USD.

I've seen one multiple times in historic races near where I live in France. No good chronos though, the car is pretty expensive and they run it for the show more than for the race, they don't want to break it, but it's often the case in historic races.

1978 was the first year. 455 made between 78 - 81. BMW partnered with Lamborghini to work out the details of the car's chassis. I have seen one in the early 80's as a kid in Germany when we drove to Italy from Sweden. I still remember the red M1 like it was yesterday, 60000 USD in the late 70's early 80's was a lot of money, they was really expensive cars.
