Answer to the assignment
In case of oblique projectile the ball was moving upwards in y-axis and we had negative g so we got the equation of downward parabola.
But in horizontal projectile the ball is moving downwards so we will have negetive value of displacement in y axis and we also have negetive value of g so they cancel the negetive sign.

Just a try for the assignment: If a is negative and y is positive in downward direction(which we take while solving for parabola), x^2 will be negative that is not possible so a is positive?
