    Since I'm getting a lot of comments about ideas for longer rides that have the coaster going in reverse somewhere, I'll make a pinned comment explaining why that doesn't work. If a train goes forward, it has a minimum speed of 1 km/h. A train going backward doesn't have a minimum speed. It will keep slowing down until it reaches standstill and then the speed will underflow to the lowest possible forward. This happens quite quickly so you sadly cannot use this. Here is a video showing it in action: th-cam.com/video/ScrciQvMM_4/w-d-xo.html

      I see some green on the edge. Wouldn't using that make the trip some days longer. Mathematically spoken, this is a longer ride.

    • @DRoo95
      @DRoo95 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Marcel, have you tried this in RCT Classic? I've done this with a 3km long looping coaster and not only did the train return to station (the speed didn't underflow), also its reverse travel was at a much slower speed.
      I haven't been able to accurately measure how much slower it went backwards compared to forward though, but it went at least several times slower.
      EDIT: Let me be a bit more specific. It's RCT Classic for Android. And the downside is that the max number of circuits appears to be 7. Still: I think you should be able to make a longer ride with this.

    • @MarcelVos
      @MarcelVos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@DRoo95 So it turns out I wrong all along about reversing rides. I just tested it and in both classic and RCT2 vanilla it goes 0 km/h but doesn't underflow. It underflowed in OpenRCT2 and I automatically assumed it would do so in vanilla as well.

    • @MarcelVos
      @MarcelVos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@DRoo95 I can indeed make longer rides with this. However, I have found another way that would make this factor 10 or so a bit redundant.

    • @DRoo95
      @DRoo95 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MarcelVos So it's actually just an OpenRCT2 bug. Btw I've taken the time to do some measurements, and it appears reversing goes about 7-8 times slower (on RCT classic, I think this example shows we can't assume the game mechanics are exactly the same on different versions)

      We need to organize where and what equipment. A custom PC with as reliable parts as we can get would be ideal. We also need to set up an FFmpeg server to restream to multiple platforms. This way, even if one platform goes under it can continue running. The computer in question needs to have backup power, and we need to emulate the system running the game and backup the machine state in set intervals to a remote server in case of worst case scenario.
      The machine should be kept in a controlled environment, maybe a repurposed fish tank with air filtration and temperature controls. This will prevent dust from collecting.

    Based upon your in-game calculations, this epic quest would take over 122,466 RCT2 years. My God, they won't even be _human_ by the time they get back to the station.
    For frame of reference to compare the experience of these peeps with our own, the Sahara was still a lush wetland 120,000 years ago. Modern man's earliest forebears hadn't even reached the continent of _Europe_ yet. 120,000 years into the future, Earth Years will have increased by as many as two or more SI seconds due to the deceleration of Earth's axial rotation, and the Sahara is likely to be converted back to tropical due to the natural alteration in Earth's rotational axis, which would happen some 90,000 years before these poor fellows take one foot off the ride.
    This devilry you've constructed makes Mr. Bones' Wilde Ride look like a set of swings on a playground. Bless you, Marcel Vos, you absolute madman, and have a Merry Christmas.

    Imagine you're in your early twenties. You're still living with your parents, in your childhood home. You decide to build a coaster in RCT2. You see how long of a coaster you can make, but it would clearly be too much to actually test it, and you're not skilled enough in math to calculate it.
    As a joke, you start the coaster. It's funny to you. You have it running in the background for the next few months. However, eventually, you move out of the house. Opportunities arise, and you get the chance to work as an engineer - a field you always had a certain connection with. You're more socially active than ever before, you have your own house, and there's even a cute girl who works in your office. It's the best you've ever felt in your life.
    Over a decade passes. You're making $190K a year off of your engineering career. You're now married to the girl of your dreams, and the future mother of your children. You can't believe you started off as the poor kid working as a janitor to a pizza joint in southern Arizona. As you're overlooking the balcony view of your beach house as the sun rises over the sea, your wife calls to you that she's made breakfast. A tear falls down your cheek. You've done it. You've succeeded.
    You get a letter in the mail. It's from your mother. Your mother, after all, was the one who always understood you. She was the one who believed in you. Dad was almost never around, and you don't even have many memories of him before....
    The letter, in fact, was an invitation to revisit your childhood home. You get giddy, and your hands start to shake with excitement. You can't wait to go back and see everything that's changed, and everything that hasn't. You wonder if your mom kept your old gameboy, your childhood bedroom, maybe even your old desktop computer.
    It's a long drive, but it doesn't feel long. Your mother greets you from the door, and memories instantly flash back to you. You can almost sense the feeling of cookies baking in the kitchen and the sight of your old childhood golden lab, Beckett. You step inside the home where you grew up, the place that made you who you are. You and your mother talk for hours on end about what's happened since the last time you spoke face-to-face. On the one hand, it felt like no time at all had passed since you were eating mac and cheese at your computer desk because you wanted to keep playing games. On the other, it felt as if you'd changed so much over the years that you were barely even the same person. But now it felt as if you were not only physically, but mentally returning to the place you'd been when you decided to take that risk that brought you to where you are today.
    You're overjoyed throughout the visit. Looking into your childhood bedroom, you're filled with nostalgia. Everything's so familiar, even the stuff you had almost forgotten. The stuffed teddy bear that you hadn't touched since you were 12. The old shelves with comic books you read so many nights when you were trying to fall asleep. Heh, even the computer that you'd use when you'd given up on trying to fall asleep. It was all there.
    You're curious. You hear a light whirring sound in your old room. You wonder if your old PC is still on. Your mother was never good with technology, so it'd make perfect sense for her to not know how to turn it off. You go over to it and wiggle the dusty mouse a little. Yep, it was indeed still on. The sounds of the fans increase, and when the computer monitor turns on, you see something you can't believe. Once again, your achievements are visible in front of you, and a tear rolls down your face.

    RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is from 2002, this video was posted in 2018
    2018 - 2002 = 16 years
    A human can go fine with roughly 6 hours of sleep
    There are 24 hours in a day
    6/24 = 25%
    25% of 16 years = 4 years
    16 years - 4 years = 12 years .....
    Precisely the amount of time needed to test the train if you wanted to be present during the entire event and pausing it while you sleep.
    Nice try attempting to convince us that its not practical to test it in real time, but now we know that you actually did it - and only posted the video in 2018 after you finished the real-time testing of your creation. I've caught you red handed mate...

      Talk about a sneaky death sentence. Because how is one suppose to eat or drink while on a ride? Unless each roller coaster car had it's own star trek replicator built into it, any one on the ride would die of either starvation or dehydration.
      When each car finally hit the station they would be removing half or fully decayed corpses. Not one person on the planet could be able to survive the whole ride. And if one did, behold you have found the first immortal.

    I've never actually played RCT2 so I don't know about the specifics or limits of certain things, but going just off what I learned from your video, here's a thought: why not have multiple synchronized rides that function like a counter in base 20?
    You know how when counting in base 10, the 10s place increments once for every 10 increments in the 1s position, the 100s place increments once for every 10 increments in the 10s position and so on. Given that the lap limit is 20, we can treat it as base 20 instead.
    So for every 20 laps of the first ride, a coaster on the second ride moves out of its station to the next block section.
    When a coaster on the second ride finishes its 20 laps, a coaster on the third ride moves out of its station to the next block station on its circuit.
    And so on and so forth.
    The time spent here would depend on optimizing the use of landscape data and finding the perfect balance between ride-length and the number of rides. Perhaps it's enough to at least warrant an experiment?
    All you'd need to measure would be the time taken to complete the first and second ride, the rest of the data can be calculated easily using that as a base.
    The very last ride in the chain may very well take exponentially longer to complete than even this monster you built here.

    • @ALLenROOK
      @ALLenROOK 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@lettuce141 I haven't actually played this game, but it looks like you can go higher. I looked up that here is a maximum number of 255 rides you can build. If you have 255 tiny rides chained together so that it takes 20 laps of the previous one to do 1 lap of the next one, the final ride will require 20^255, or (5.8 * 10^331) laps of the first ride. A little over (googol^3). Even if each lap of the first ride took a second of real time, there is enough time for all matter in the observable universe to decay to subatomic particles before the final ride makes a lap. If we're lucky, we'll finish before the heat death of the universe.

    You want to go on something more thrilling than Merry-Go-Round 1, Mister Guest? Yes, I know of such a ride, I learn of such things from a Dutchman's TH-cam video. "I'm not paying that much to go on/for 12 years of suffering"? This is fair, the ticket price is now free. This ride has other ways of making you pay. Your wife, your children on the phone--they will beg me to let you come home. They and a thousand letters shall be turned away from my doorstep. Enclosed in their envelopes shall be news bearing the death of both your parents, the marriage of your daughter, and birth of your grandchildren. And when you finally get off, Mister Guest, when the only two things you can see are the 1x1x10 tile of elevated terrain that I've blocked the park exit off with and the line to get back on the ride...you will know the price of this thrilling ride you so wanted has been paid.

    Here's an idea.
    A maze that takes up the entire landscape data and 255 guests trying to figure it out.
    From what I understand, they take a random turn at every possible intersection... Which means they could spend an ungodly amount of time just piddling around in circles and make 0 progress in the maze.
    It took 255 guests 6 in game years for at least 1 guest to solve a 15X15 maze that wasn't design to take advantage of their random turning mechanic (which I think would be a maze of endless 4x intersection loops)

    • @MarcelVos
      @MarcelVos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I could indeed maybe have saved 1 or 2 footpath tiles if I built the coaster on ground level. However, that is maybe about a 0.0001% difference or so and building the big coaster from the top down was easier.
