i work at Sephora, and the tester products gross me out so much. They're often pretty old (depending on how popular the product is, because if it's not crazy popular it's been sitting on the shelf forever) and they've been tested 1000's of times. We can only really "sanitize" the product so much. Say it's a mascara, when a client asks to use it we grab a brand new mascara wand, dip it in the tube and hand it to the customer.. But what about the self serving clients?? They use the existing mascara wand that's already in the tube (and i see it happen multiple times a day) they use it right on their eyes and put it back into the tube.. So although i am using a brand new mascara wand on you, it's still contaminated from all the self serving clients... And that goes for everything, including lipsticks!! (hello, coldsore virus!!! IT NEVER GOES AWAY, if you're infected with the coldsore virus you can never get rid of it!!!!!) ..So take my advice, just try the product on the back of your hand and wash it off afterwards.. Only put brand new products you've purchased on yourself... Your health and wellbeing is worth it!!! Take it from someone who went to make up artistry school and learned a lot about sanitation!!! Make up, especially the liquid makeup like mascara, lipgloss etc is a breeding ground for nasty bacteria!!!!!!!!!
Loni LeBlanc I 'sanitize' products at ulta better than half the employees lol . My mom was trying a benefit lipstick and one girl wiped the top off with tissue but no alcohol...
I'm an esthi at Ulta and for anybody that works on the floor that doesn't already have a cosmetology license knows to sanitize any product with alcohol 3 sprays at least. But we do our best we can't deny service. I once had to follow around a known hooker and dispose of all the testers she used. I feel it would be easier if we would just cut the ends off of testers like cut off the doe foot applicator and mascara wands to keep things more sanitary but people just have no manners or no thought

The fact about the returns is absolutely not true. Sephora needs a proof of purchase to process a return. Proof of purchase can be a receipt, or if the item was purchased in a beauty insider account. Otherwise they are unable to do returns because some of the products they carry are also carried at other retailers such as urban decay, Tom Ford, Estee lauder
Color IQ didn't work for me at all. The Sephora employees insisted on trying to put foundation shades at least two shades too dark on my face. I ended up accepting a sample I gave to a friend just to put an end to this. To be fair, I'm very pale so many brands don't have a shade I can wear.
I've had some pretty bad experiences at Sephora; so bad in fact that I reported them to the main office. While I like the products, I avoid shopping there now.
Remember that walmart has good makeup as well. It doesn't have to be a fancy brand. Covergirl lipstick and maybelline lipsticks from walmart have worked well for me.

aishah m. Funny, the ulta near me told me that they can't give me any samples. Didn't give me a reason why, either. It was really annoying.
Only once did I get a sample from Ulta. I had to ask twice, they didn't have proper sample containers, and they seemed pissy about it.
