Drying Water Damaged Macbook Pro 2020 Model A2289 - using Rice

- An accident happened. My workhorse laptop had water damage. Within the hour after i arrived home, i opened op the back cover of the Macbook Pro using a Penta-Lobe Screwdriver. I carried out the following:
1. Remove back cover
2. Wipe away all visible water with a paper kitchen towel.
3. Detach the battery connector from the mainboard - refer to videos on TH-cam for this procedure.
4. Carry out ambient drying process for at least 48hrs - with lid open.
I was fortunate to have the laptop powering back again after about 48hrs of drying off with the back cover on.
After powering the unit back on, i found that the LCD display is covered with water patches. There were water in between the following layers:
1. Space in between LCD layer and the diffuser
2. Space in between the diffuser and the backlight
Did some research online and decided to try out the drying method using rice as the absorbing substance/material as I did not have Silica gel/dessicant at that moment.
The procedure was carried out based on the following :
1. It's pure water that spilled and it should evaporate naturally
2. I will use the natural system heat instead of using heating tools such as a hair dryer or heat gun to accelerate drying to avoid pre-mature shortening of LCD life (heat related damage)
3. Dry item in a controlled air tight compartment to control and avoid external humidity or other external moisture.
This video sums up what I did and the non-periodic timelapse documents the rate of which the evaporation actually took. All in all, the process of drying is a possible option to try out for those who would like to try before actually exchanging the display unit.

Had an accident few days back … was hesitant to try but finally I did and it’s been 6 days now …I can clearly see the progress …expecting my MacBook to be as good as new in next 3-4 days …this guy really is a genius …saved my ass too !!!!!🎉 ( also I kept my mac in white rice which I already had at home. I kept it without opening the back panel and switched off throughout.)
Did it work?
Did it work?
Did it work??😭
please tell me if it worked in the end?????
is the laptop still functioning, i am really scared for my laptop
Maybe he died.
Him not the laptop.
Thanks so much! It really worked! I was also hesitant to try, but kept my laptop for about 14 days in a plastic container with rice and all water disappeared from my screen! Thanks for the help!
Yay!! Glad it helps.
Thanks! Do you think there still might be water inside my macbook and it might die at some point? Or if it’s been so long (about 3 weeks) + in the container with rice and all water disappeared from the screen, then it should be OK?
shall i keep the macbook ON?
My macbook was ON, i even charged it once so that it doesn’t go to “sleep”. But idk if that matters. However, even though the water is seemingly gone, my speakers are a bit screwed, I can only do zoom calls with airpods, otherwise people hear loud noises :(
i Tried mine wo running it and wo opening the back of my laptop, putting at a container just like his. In just a night, a huge difference of positivity happens. This guy is genius! Thank you! you save my life and $$$
Hi Helen, Great to hear that this tip has helped you. Thank you for sharing your experience.👍👍
@@msulhanjuman9708 and thanks heaps for your tips! Now it's almost a week and the blotch has reduced significantly! Maybe another 2-3days and my screen will be normal again 😊
@@helenmargo2803 hi! is it fixed now? it’s been 2 weeks since you said this
@@zahra-vc1de Yep totally gone by now, just put it in a container with some rice and it will speed up the process if you have like small fan / blower ( i use aircon)
did you use a hairdryer or blower even if you didn’t remove the back? my macbook got wet and i dont have the tools to remove the back so i’m hoping it will still work 🥹
After 9 days my laptop is now working perfectly fine. Thank you so much for this video🙌🏽🙏🏽
just had an accident, straight away followed your instructions on the video, hope the water is gone, youre a legend!!
Does it work? How the result now?
Hey there. Did that end up working for you? My a1 just took a lot of rain
Update?
@@thataintme doesn't work, my computer didn't even turn on anymore after i did this.
Apple Store wanted 1.3k to repair everything (screen and motherboard), local repair shop just took 80€ for a quick deoxidation, which allowed the computer to turn back on.
The drops are still in my screen but they've been gradually decreasing in the last month without doing anything.
@@EdouardNicolas96
Hey I have the same problem now, my MacBook Air is not turning on now, should I take it to a local shop where hopefully they can do something?
Was able to remove all the liquid in my Macbook's screen in about 10 days using this method. This method works wonders. Thank you so much for sharing! Saved us $$$ had we gone along with Apple's repair quote.
@@panmaxvan did you charge while doing this process ?
Update: it worked perfectly. This guy is a legend!
Hi Simon, great to hear that it worked well for you. I hope everything is well and you get to save your machine.👏👏
What if i dont open the back cover. Will it still works?
@@jennysahetapy9851 the main reason for the removal of the back is to help as much of the water to evaporate outwards, instead of condensing back onto the electronics components. We just want to avoid any moisture to recirculate within the electronics components that my cause latent issues.
It may work with the back on, but maybe take a longer time. Just guessing.
@@msulhanjuman9708 thank you for the explanation 🙏😊
Does it leave some little mark on the lcd?
Hello there. I was hesitant to try this but it was my only option. Not disappointed, it really worked! Thanks a lot :)
Just started this process. Will share results in a few days. Thankyou for sharing this awesome tip!
How the result? Does it work?
can it clean all the water? or leave a little mark?
Can i have your email/instagram please? I want to see the photos of the result 🥺
@@awangaryobaskoro3781 Did it remove everything or leave some marks ?
shall i keep the macbook ON?
Did this but in a brownie tray with silica anti humidity beads. Went on vacation so I was able to leave it in for 12 days. It was about 75% improved. Wish I could post before and after pics here.
Did all the water disappear?
Once about 75% dried up, that was about as good as it got. The remaining "smudgy" look stayed but it's not super noticeable. It'll never be 100% better. I got the anti humidity silica beads on Amazon and I'm guessing they work better than rice.
Trying this right now. I’ll came back with the result.
Update: After 20 days, my MacBook is almost 100%. The water stain was quite large, which is why it took several days. I left it inside a box and sealed it with tape. I only turned on the Mac to check the progress. I didn't keep it charging or remove the back cover.
The method definitely works, and I recommend it to everyone. It just requires a little patience.

ok, its been 8 days since u put it. can u tell me the result

Can I do it without opening the back cover of macbook? Is it also necessary to plug the MacBook continuously? Thank you
I´m going to use this method... I just have a little cloud in the corner of my MacBook. I hope that it will work good! Thanks boss!

Hello sir your technician really help me on water damage but it affect my display
Hey Uncle sully, can i contact u in personz? I water damaged my Macbook Air M1 too after my bottle water spilled on my backpack. I left it dry with rice for 10days now, but it still left water stain and marks /the screen became a lil darker on some part. Do you have the same condition or your screen became completely normal after the water damage?
I'm curious. Does the MacBook have to remain on during the 9 days? or can I just leave it powered off somewhere where it's hot?
it works! and just leave it and wait a couple of days.
shall i keep the macbook ON?
Hi uncle, i’m just wondering. I left it in the rice for 9 days and 2 days in silica gel. Once i restarted it, there’s no more water patch on the screen but screen flickers even more. Is it.. screen or hardware problem already? :(
Does it have to sealed for the 9 days straight or I can seal it at night and work with it during the day?
Just tried this on my mac, it works fine but the minor lcd water damage is frustrating man, leaving it over night, hope the rice does its magic🤞
Did it work
@@kvnaiamvs9750 yes, he saved my brand new mac!
How many days did u leave it there?
how many days did you leave it on rice?
keep it for atleast 2-3 days, but never open it, good luck!@@wentokkicute5810
how do you open the bottom to dry it out?
My MacBook m1 got caught in rain, I was very worried looked this video about 4 months ago.
Don’t worry guys it will go on its own no heaters or hairdryers needed.
- in the first 15 days 30% of water was removed and it had big white marks in display I was very worried for that
- in the first 3 months almost 60% of the screen was fixed and the white marks was fading away.
- now it’s around 4 month and screen is 90% fine all white marks are almost gone.
Heaters and hair dryers won’t fix it soon just leave as it is
did u still use it normally when there was water on the screen?
Thank you for sharing!
are you saying, instead of putting it in rice, just do nothing and let it go away on its own?
Mine washed by cleaner in my bag. I wonder if this works.:D
Great video, I'm going to try on my laptop! Same, MacBook Pro. Mine looks like yours did. With a much brighter bottom than the rest of the screen, did this help brighten the rest of the screen, or just bring it all back to same level of brightness??
The lower part of my screen is also brighter. Did it get better and what orientation did you keep it in?
U gave me hope
Yeah, accidents do happen and we try our best to rescue the device. Hope that you are able to recover. If it does, do share the outcome.
Melayu eh Abang Sully? 😂 Thanks for the video, it helps alot!
Can you charge ? While drying ?
Do we have to open computer until it dry? I got imac look like computer i clean with wet towel then screen absorb water so I hope nthis will help me , i want to know do i have to plug it open computer to run screen along many day until it absorb all moisture?
I've had water in the rice and I've been checking on it and there is lines starting to pop up and like a after image showing what do I do for that?
I am using cat litter and zip lock bag, the damage is in every part of the screen. used white rice for 2 days no change. I can see change after one day using cat litter.
How many days apart from the water accident until you actually did the rice thing?
6 months update : everything is 100% fine, like my MacBook never drown.
FANTASTIC! Mac wanted to charge me $300 (that is WITH Apple Care) to WIPE MY HARD DRIVE! What? I picture giant barrels of rice in back, full of laptops, and computer nerds reading bad novels and dear John letters... and a sales manager yelling, "Who is 'Coulda Riced It' Pooba Today?"
ALSO, I learned how to open my back cover, y'all. I got a penalobe kit! ZERO water in components. I had about 1/3 damage seen here, three days later, only a little cloud in bottom left corner all that is left.
BEFORE I opened the back I was afraid of using it for fear of shorting something out, but now I am going to use it and just rice-dry at night... drying process was rice in bag and another bag on top, sealed with tape... Not even air tight, had ! Computer not on, not used during this time.
$300 my ass.
Is this position better or is it the tent shape?
does it work even if the microphone is bad?
Mine is completely off
I spray Rubbing Alcohol, Isopropanol Isopropyl Alcohol liquid directly onto my laptop screen and left it for 15 min to clean my mac screen, after that liquid get inside my screen, screen is working fine but water spreads over screen, can i turn it on and left screen with full brightness or i should turn it off for 9 days. What to do help me...?
Sorry to hear that you have this problem. You can just leave the laptop in a warm environment to accelerate evaporation of the fluid. The Alcohol would have probably evaporated but the remaining fluid like water if there is, would need to evaporated out naturally if the casing can’t be opened. Putting it into a desiccant (based on inputs from people, cat litter would be a good desiccant too) filled bag or follow the rice method may help.
I use Calcium Chloride instead of rice, do u think it will take shorter time. Just pack it now. Any idea?
Wish I seen this before dropping it off at repair shop today
Hi, did you keep the charging on for nine days??
Hi bro I followed your steps and it seems to reduce the water clouds, but in the screen there are bright spots and for several days it's not reduced, do you know how to solve this?
Did it work did the bright spots go away?
Because even I've got bright spots on my laptop.
Did it work?
Hi. All time Macbook got to stay turn on? May only put device turn off onto box?
Hi Leonardo, powering into is to give some warmth to the screen portion as some heat from the device during normal operating condition would be the safest method instead of using external heat gun or hair dryer.
@@msulhanjuman9708 Thank you very much. It Works!!
@@LeonardoMarinEsquivel1804 🎉👏👏 thats great. I hope it is all better now. Thank you for sharing.
Does the type of rice used matter?
Bro my laptop also having the same problem. What can i do?
What did u do? 😢
Important thing about water damage
*KEEP_PATIENCE*
question.. is that always powering ON in 9 days?
Hi, yes the unit is powered on for the period to give it an internal natural heat source to help encourage vapourisation.
thank you for sharing your experience! I hope this will work for me too. 🤞
Hey there. Did that end up working for you? My a1 just took a lot of rain

some asian magic
Will this process work with my hp laptop
Hi, this process is mainly to help evaporation of water that may have got into the device. Depending on the extent of the water damage, the result may vary.
Good man
Hi, after watching your video over and over i notice you said you dont turn on your macbook atleast 48 hours after water leaks. So is the picture you’re showing in the video starts from day 3?
Anyways i try redo what you did on the video. I need a little suggestion. May i send you a picture of the progress on my macbook?
Thank you 🙏
Hi Jenny, yes photos were captured starting from The day I turned it on after left it off with the back cover removed for 48hrs.
Sure you can send me photos no worries. Most importantly is to observe progress in the evaporation.
@@msulhanjuman9708 hi, where can i send the photo?
Will it work if I don’t remove the back cover
i would recommend removal of back cover to ensure that you can allow any water that may be in there to be evaporated fully.
Trying it for my laptop. Will update
Did it work?
@@JCINZUNZA2110 yes it worked! I kept my laptop in my winter clothes for 2 days although my stain was not big as this!
I thought I’ll try this if clothes thing didn’t work! But i asked a lot of people they said it works
@@jyotikamboj8049 so you only put your laptop inside your winter clothes and it worked?
Hey, thank you for sharing the experience. In my case the laptop has oil damage. Any suggestion on how to fix the olive oil damage on screen?
Hi, sorry to hear of the oil damage. Oil damage is something that may be hard to resolve as it won’t be able to evaporate naturally.
@@unclesullysprojects9379 what about beer?

It really is quite hilarious how people still think rice works... Placebo effect wins again 😂😂😂
Why you even here then?
NONSENSE😜😜
Is it advisable to plug in charger if water is in screen or should I wait till the water gets fully evaporated.
