Fighting in the street isn't my focus in jiu jitsu. I'm in bed at 9:15. It doesn't come up that often. Winning tournaments is my focus in jiu jitsu. If you try to go win a tournament at blue belt or above and you're not familiar with spider or lasso, somebody will familiarize you with them under the bright lights.

You definitely want to learn a little of everything for tournaments but you also want to master your moves before as well

If a dude is wearing a long sleeve shirt you can use spider and lasso. He can peel the shirt off but once he’s committed to doing that that creates other opportunities

Definitely depends on what you’re looking for Those guards are meant for competition because you can create sweeps and points off of them

If it wont work well when someone tries to stomp me I don't really bother learning it. Good old fashioned closed guard for me. If you want to compete at a high level in "sport jitsu" have at it. Your comments are spot on!

I think the blue belt is still adopting the mentality of a chess player but is still on the path. The beautiful thing about BJJ is that it IS a chess match, but YOU decide what pieces you want to put on the board. Certainly, you should know how to defend most positions, but from an offensive point of view, you develop your own game and add the pieces that work for you. Being a taller guy, I avoid techniques that require a lot of steps and moving parts. I prefer sequences that are easy to execute and flow into other opportunities. I also prefer to grab things at weird angles, to throw off muscle memory, such as grabbing Americana from inside my closed guard, or from bottom side control. The bottom line, develop what you want to develop that (1) interests you and (2) you can fit and execute into your game. Nice video.

100% - now that we’ve been training Gi 2 weeks, then No Gi 2 weeks, I believe the best training for the streetz is both.

De la riva and berimbolo is the best in a street fight... so long as you are not rolling on the concrete

Dang. I'm so new I didn't know Lasso Guard was anything special or unique. It just so happened to be what was taught one night in class and I learned a sweep from it. I really don't know what to think. It's something I know how to do...if the opportunity presents itself I'll take it. If not, I'll try something else.

Should alway learn as much as you can and just have it in your back pocket if you need it.

Think about why you do BJJ. One reason for me is self defense. Another is cuz it's FUN. Another is I just like getting better at stuff. Lasso fits into those last two categories :)

I’ve been liking the channel a lot. But this one left me scratching my head a little.
If you’ve been a blue belt for two years, closing in on purple belt skill level, the chances of you already “winning fights” against the vast majority of people in unarmed street encounters is pretty close to 99%+ already, isn’t it?
The vast majority of people have 0 training, and even against trained wrestlers and strikers, I’m going with the 4-year BJJ practitioner.
To me, it seems like the person asking this question has already met that basic criteria. They can probably win fights. (And the likelihood of them ever really *having* to do so is extremely small.)
In the other hand, the likelihood that they’d enjoy pulling off a fancy new sport-oriented sweep on a fellow BJJ practitioner however, is very high.
So why not learn it if you think it might be fun to do and useful in your daily life, which involves rolling with BJJ enthusiasts much more than it involves fighting off unarmed brigands in a likely totally avoidable street encounter.
    That’s my take anyway.
I’d also suggest that in much of the developed world, people wear jackets and hoodies and the like for about 75% of the year.
The American South and parts of Southern Europe and South America are an exception this this, but unless you’re in Florida or Australia or something, people there are still wearing jackets, hoodies or long sleeve shirts for 25%-50% of the year. And even T-shirts are totally grabbable and even work for chokes.
I believe it was Helio Gracie who said “we wear the gi because people wear clothes”.
That said, I think no gi is more fun. But I don’t know that it’s necessarily more realistic if street situations are the standard. Though maybe it is if MMA is the standard.

    • @GracieBradentonjiujitsu
      @GracieBradentonjiujitsu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That was very well said and also very accurate. Most people who train bjj will nevee use it in the real world and for those who do a 2 stripe white belt could handle most. So unless your training mma you wont have to worry about fighting.
When we film these the answers are not scripted, so we could have very different answers to the same questions depending on the day.

If you are a blue belt and you think all you need is closed guard for BJJ...than find a new school...you are no blue belt.

Lmao why would you not experiment? A blue belt for two years and you've never tried open guards?
