  • In todays video, we got a question from a purple belt asking what to do when there or not many upper belts in your gym and your trying to improve your game. He feels like he is a big fish in a small pound and wants to know how to progress. Hopefully this videos helps solve the problem for him and any others who are having this issue. Thanks for watching, please like subscribe, comment, and keep submitting your questions.

    I remember Roger Gracie when he moved to England, he only trained with his students for a long time, beginners, he is recognized for his game, when asked how did he got so good? he attributed it to his training with beginners, it makes a lot of sense, he perfected the basics over and over and over again.

      I feel like I've gotten better at the finer details by rolling with the guys that are just able to smash through me. The really new guys I use to test new stuff that I'm really iffy on to see if it's something I'd even want to add to my game

    I'm a long time seasoned nogi grappler, and besides rolling with instructors, I work on my rock solid defense, allow them to sink in as deep as they want, then boom, I technically come out, so that way we al improve. Rolling with high level grapplers too often has brought lot of unjuries and joint issues for me.

    This is very similar to my situation. I'm a brown belt and my main gym is full of white and blue belts.. once a week I'll go do a class at another nearby gym that is full of killers - adcc competitors and pro mma fighters, which is where I get smashed! This definitely levels up my game.

    Hi Sonny,
    I hope your hospital visit wasn't too serious and you are feeling better.
    I saw the title of your video on my notifications and was stoked because I knew it was my question :)
    I appreciate what you said about the 70/30 rule. This is excellent advice and I'm looking forward to being more conscious of how I choose my partners.
    I agree that there is little room for experimentation when I roll with guys at or better than my skill level.
    By the way... I got my brown belt earlier this month! I taught a class on using the defense for De La Riva (DLR) to transition to Reverse DLR for a back take. And like you advise in this video I made it a point to do the move to everyone in my class (mostly blue belts) during live rolls after the sequencing and drilling was complete. It's a lot of pressure but that pressure to teach means you have to prove it's not BS what you're communicating to your students.
    That's what I love about the main instructor at my gym. The stuff he shows is the stuff he catches us with, so I do my best to follow in his example.
    Side note: as far as upper belts leaving the gym - all I'll say is it's gym drama. People get over their issues. Now after things have cooled off I am happy to say quite a few people have found their way back to our school.
    Thanks again Sonny.

    New to jiujitsu however wrestled for a long time and coach on the side the transistion to not going to my belly has been a eye opener. So far I like the lunch sessions the best since there are so few people. Usually 2 whites, 1-2 blues, 1 purple , 1-2 blacks no browns yet. Just learning how to flow. t
    The higher belts take us lowers to teach us how to flow. In rolling it is about the same for the first few rolls with them varying the resistance working their moves on us then letting us get something and walking us through it. Then us lower belts roll together. In two weeks time it seems I am more relaxed and somehow getting positions on my class mates that are whites easier now in evening class.

    Nice video. I saw a video with Rickson where he said he used to improve while training with his students by making things more difficult for himself, like by not using one of his arms or by telling his rolling partner specifically which technique he was aiming to use so they had a better opportunity to defend against it.

    At my gym we do isolation rounds where everyone takes turn to take a round and set a level of resistance they'd like from their partner so they can practice their chosen technique. It sacrifices some live rolling time but it is a great way for even people who are least skilled to practice against different levels of resistance with no pressure to win.

    • @GracieBradentonjiujitsu
      @GracieBradentonjiujitsu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds interesting.

    • @adamturowski3765
      @adamturowski3765 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is called positional sparring in my gym. You choose the position to start from, the level of resistance and reset criteria. Then you have 3 minutes. After that is your partner's turn to choose what and how they want to do. Instructor encourages to pick techniques/positions that you are either bad at or don't get often in normal sparring. It works really well for making your game more even - during normal sparring people tend to go for their favourite techniques.

I’m not a heavy weight but I’m a lean 195lber and most the guys in my gym are 140-165..And a couple 215+. Would you say a similar role applies when I’m struggling to find guys around my weight? • @FlavorPharaoh
      @FlavorPharaoh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is difficult to give a timeline because there are a lot of variables such as athleticism, training frequency and intensity, and also the skill levels of the people in your gym. The last one was the biggest variable for me personally. If you are the newest guy at the gym then there will not be very many other people to fill that 70% portion. Once I was about a year in there were a decent number of new people training at my gym and since I had a year of training on them and they were so new, I could begin rolling with people I was very likely to beat. The skill level gap between yourself and new people, and the frequency of new people training at your gym will decide how long that takes but it will happen naturally.

    • @tedvanantwerpii880
      @tedvanantwerpii880 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FlavorPharaoh Yes sir that is starting to happen. It's weird being on the otherside and not having to fight for my life every roll. This video is going to help me a lot. I don't need to keep arm-barring newer guys...I need to test my newer techniques on them. That will be more fun, too.

    • @GracieBradentonjiujitsu
      @GracieBradentonjiujitsu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zachary has a great point. The 70/30 rule tbh fits more for upper belts but that does not mean you cant work it into your training. As a white belt your first focus should be learning how to survive. Once you are comfortable in any position where you feel more or less "safe" you can now start working on attacking. And thats where that 70/30 rule really comes to play.

  • @johnnycage2746
    @johnnycage2746 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am a 2nd stripe white belt of like 400 classes (alot were 2 a day open mats due to covid), I will roll with only upper belts if given the opportunity. I like getting smashed and problem solving. Spazzy new white belts just injure me on my fingers or wrist. I guess it is good to measure yourself against new faces but I would rather roll with blue belts who will give me realistic resistance. I am not really at the point of working on my subs, I just want a good guard and defense game because my passing game is good enough to hold people down at blue belt level. I will work on my subs later on. I made the mistake of focusing on them in the beginning but never getting the position. Now I get the position, I wanna practice transitions to other positions.
    I don't know if I am doing the right thing but my professor seems to think so. He is pushing me to compete as soon as things open up because we can't move out of province due to COVID without paying an absurd amount of money for re-quarantine. Wish I lived in Texas or Florida.

    • @GracieBradentonjiujitsu
      @GracieBradentonjiujitsu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats good as a white belt you want to learn how to survive untill you feel comfortable in any position and you know how to defend most submissions. Then you can start focusing on offense. That way your comfortable attacking know if you mess up you know how to defend so your not holding back on attacks. Also dont compare your level to blue belts. Its a beginner belt. If you cant do it on purple and up it need work. 🙏🏻

    Does this rule apply equally to white belts? I'm at a point where I'm able to give blue belts some trouble, im able to play open guard against them and make it difficult to pass, and I'm able to pass their guard, even if it is short lived and they recover fairly quickly. There's really only one other white belt at my gym that is at about the same skill level, and then a bunch of beginners. Should I just be smashing the new guys constantly? Question:
    I'm currently training at a gym with a purple belt coach. He doesn't do drills, competitions, and rarely does seminars. Due to these circumstances promoting is nigh impossible here. We technically do have a black belt affiliate, but we're lucky to see him once a year and he's 3 hours away.
    This is my home gym though. I've been training here for almost 7 years first as an mma athlete, then a bjj one. My connections to the gym run deeper than the bjj program.
    Due to my growth through cross training and self taught skills, I've had black belts from gyms I crosstrain at offer me promotions. I'm not sure how I feel about that, and I'm unsure if that betrays my loyalty to my home gym.
    Do you have any insight on my situation? Should I just wait until the situation eventually changes at my home gym and move up in comp brackets in the meantime? Or is there a way I can accept a promotion with a black belt who has the best evaluation of my skills, and NOT disrespect my home boys?
    Insight is appreciated. Thank you profressor.

      Coach Dom here. IMO this is a very good question, I’ll see if we can make a video about this. For now my advice is discuss this with your black belt affiliate. You don’t have to make a stink about it but I’ve heard similar situations with people I know and typically what will happen is you can come to an understanding about who can/should promote who and to what rank, and what is or is not appropriate. Communication is key. Be respectful, and don’t come at it from the perspective of demanding a rank you feel you deserve, instead come at it with the goal of having an understanding about how you should progress to higher belts and who is going to do that of your current coach isn’t a high enough rank. Hopefully I can go into more detail on later video. Also to be clear, typically another black belt promoting you would be seen as very disrespectful to your coach tbh.

      obviously messing around, thanks for responding. but on a serious note, i am looking to join a gym. is it safe to do BJJ after getting a second vaccine shot? or i guess any idea when getting back to the gym might be safe again?

      Not really sure about the vaccine but all we can say is, if you feel healthy then join and start training. If you dont feel healthy then wait until you do 👍

    I always felt like I got better when I'm able to smash my partner in training. I don't like going with equal cuz its basically a stalemate the whole time and I like going with ppl better so I can practice defense and stuff

    Mmm.. well when u r the worst one at your gym this doesn’t work to well

    • @SonnyParlin

      If you're the worst one at your gym then you have no business working on offense. Your job as the worst at your gym is to take beatings and learn how to defend. Once you've done a good bit of that, you start practicing the 70/30 rule on new people who come through the door.
