Wow I just found this by searching for "mapping mod knob serum ableton" and I got a whole lot more than I expected! Amazing tutorial I liked and subscribed!
For anyone who can't get their waveform to loop seamlessly: I found that I had to render/freeze the MIDI to 48K 32-bit audio for it to loop without clicks. Any other configuration would lead to audible clicks as well as imperfect behaviour as a modulator in Serum. Once the audio had been rendered, it still looped perfectly once converted to 44.1K 16-bit. For some reason though, freezing the Serum MIDI with those settings never yielded the same result. I'm using REAPER but I'm guessing this might also occur in other DAWS - perhaps even Ableton. Hope this helps. Also - get Au5's sound design course ya shmucks
Not only are you someone who is really well versed in legitimate sound design, but you are perhaps one of the few musicians that teaches their audience WHY things sound the way they do rather than "hey do this it sounds cool lol".
Buddy at my work likes to say being a producer is just pushing a button and that's it, can't wait to show him this as I have no idea what the fuck you're doing 👍🏼
This is really cool! If you like this, get into Reason! It's been able to have live audio modulation since version 4. All you have to do is run audio into thor, run it out as a cv signal, and modulate what you want!
I've been producing for 20 years now. I'd say my knowledge and skills are somewhat decent. But after watching this I feel like a total n00b. How are you coming up with these ideas? Guys like you have a deep understanding of what is actually going on. Respect :)
Dude this is insane, never even thought this kind of modulation was possible without some insane automation and LFO work. Your view and take on synthesis is so interesting to learn from, loving the videos dude
Dude, just came across this video of yours from years ago, and just realized that what you said at the end of the video may just be what you've shared on your Instagram the other day? 🤔 Nevertheless, awesome video, and thanks for sharing these weird intricate tips and things, because I've come to realize that music production is more than just notes and sounds, but also the weird and whacky things you discover along the way, and just straight up out of the box usage for various different things. And that's one thing I know you do a lot, and I appreciate that 😌
That's dope af. I've been trying to figure out how to make a stomach growly farty buzzy bass kinda like you hear in pixel terror tunes and I had no idea where to start and this video shows me where to start. Muchos gracias!
yea the noise mod thing was cool but aux mod is the thing i was looking for for ages and started thinking its impossible... I always learn so much from these videos aside from the topic it's mainly about
I actually imported a lot of single cycle shapes in the noises just for FM, especially if I wanted double FM and the sub shapes weren't exactly what I wanted to use, but I never thought I could use it to modulate it directly, sometimes it creates FM but not necessarily, that's a really cool technique
without going into great detail like Meredith tried - phase over time IS frequency. if a sine wave is the modulator then the interpolation is effectively equivalent. So we may as well see this latter part of the video using the variable delay as MIDI sidechained FM. Unfortunately we don't have the capacity to set up a complex modulator here with another FM operator by modulating the modulator a.k.a. frequency modulation index. If we dump a sample into sampler and in the oscillator tab turn on FM we get a pretty good darn control there but unfortunately we have to load in an entire sample so we don't have real time, and although we get an ADSR we can't modulate the modulator. This concept keeps coming up and it just seems like nobody's made one. Then I start thinking will shit maybe I should just do it and Max so I have it… But is that really true nobody has made this?
I used the Adventure Kid Waveforms, they are single cycle already so lots of fun too be had with all of those as the noise Osc. Plus the VST 3 format will let us use external audio as a source.Once Live 10.1 is released(can use VST3's) and Serum becomes a VST 3 synth/fx.(if its not already..Steve?)Cheers Mr S
You are my fav EDM artist. So different and inspiring. Your tracks always give me chills. How do you produce the sound that sounds like a creaky door opening in one of your monstercat releases?
You're an absolute legend for doing these! One request - if you could slow down your talking a little bit it would be helpful. Just because you're giving us a lot to take in :)
Idk about Ableton, but in Reaper you can modulate any VST parameter by essentially sidechaining it to another audio track. If you set the attack and decay of that sidechain to zero, you can get a similar effect to here, but with live audio.
You should take a look at Bitwig's audio rate modulation. It does exactly what you're looking for, and allows CV like routing between any parameter of a VST and any audio source (including live audio)
I've tried that a long time ago, but kept encountering a problem. When I routed a modulator into the audio input it would take the plugin at least 1 full minute to produce an effect. How successful was the FM8 method for you?
Very advanced technique, genius actually. Au5, I've always said you were the most talented producer there is, even back in the day. I've been producing for 5 years and this shit, along with the hyper growl tutorial are baffling. I doubt you'll answer since this video is so old, but what instruments did you play growing up? When did you start producing? I've noticed my 15 years of piano helped me so much when I got into producing
Hey is there by any chance you can link the noise file? i tried doing this in FL studio and things just didnt sound right, and i tend to get confused on alot of these tutorials. thanks !
I Don't understand how he can put so much high end and movement into his sounds and have it not get all swishy and lose all of its attenuation when it gets uploaded to soundcloud. But everytime I hear an Au5 track on soundcloud it sounds pristine. My mind is always blown.
I may have just fell in love with you.. but let's be honest it's your little brainchild Pitch Perfect phase that I'm in love with thanks bro I appreciate it. I like your tunes by the way tight mixdowns
Epic tutorial! I have a feeling if you turn on the x4 quality setting you will hear much more resolution in the sound, particularly in the high end. For FM sounds it does anyway, and it makes a really big difference. Interesting what you did with the external instr device. Are you sending midi information AFTER the operator, or is the midi info and the audio from operator coming side by side? I guess it's whatever way serum listens to it's inputs?? Nice lil head spinner anyway lmao
I back this idea, and personally I'd love to get Serum in FL however I'm not sure what would be different in this tutorial if I used Serum in Fl opposed to Ableton. (I'm assuming that's Ableton.)
I feel like I am doing something wrong because when I automate some parameters say the pan, warp and cut off and raise my macro knob, I get these interesting effects but lose the tonal value of the note, like the effects seem to just be 'noise' rather than a note being manipulated if that makes any sense at all. The note loses its harmonic integrity to put it in posh speak :D
Hmm that's pretty smart. I would of never of thought of that....guess I'm not smart. This gave me a lot of ideas to try though. You could use a reed or some insect sound like a locust....
I looove the sounds you're getting out of this technique!! Unfortunately no matter what I do, the samples I make of the sine waves for use in the noise oscillator always seem to make a little static noise when it the sound loops. Is there a way around this??
The midi LFO patch has key tracking. Surely that is an easier way to replicate this effect no? With regards to audio in it would be quite easy to (at least in live 10) route audio to it as a mod source instead although in that regards wouldn't you just have an envelope follower instead?
Sure, but why spend the extra time trying to perfectly sync to your note when you can import a sine wave already perfectly tuned? Also this is Serum-exclusive so any DAW user can use this without needing M4L or Ableton.
Because there is literally no setup it has key tracking, its one click to get it to sync to the key pitch. Also because this is synth agnostic... and you can map it with not much modification to multiple synths at once (or using an instrument rack macro with zero mods)
9:49 you got it!

BRO CHAPEAUX. NO WORDS FOR YOUR AMAZING MIND.
How did you figure out 245.28?
BPM/60 = Hz
C4 = 261.63Hz
*60 = 15697.8 BPM (too high tempo)
/64 = 245.28 (reasonable tempo that works because it's a factor of 15697.8)
Thanks so much for responding & explaining!!!
