Au5: noooo you can't just automate white noise level, you need to create inharmonics using fm and complex filters nooo every other tutorial: haha white noise goes tsss
OK, so you said you would appreciate comments on the method. :) Here are the tweaks I've employed (and also showcased them in a video below): - I tried bumping OSC oversample up as we're dealing with FM. It's a tad clearer, I feel. - I've modified the source waves to be more complex and higher, thus... - thus my results are much more resemblant of a white noise. In fact, you can almost substitute one for another... - which would defeat the purpose, but I tried moving my FM amount with an envelope, getting from a "noisier" mode to a more "ridish" mode while the sound changes and evolves. It's a cool trick. It sounds rather natural and gives you a sense of control over the color without touching an EQ or something like a sample pitch. - I also use a different Amp envelope with a sharper attack and fast rolloff. I feel that "real rides" have very, very sharp amplitude bump compared to their long tail. The video: th-cam.com/video/o2K7eHFCt0U/w-d-xo.html Thank you for the inspiration to mess around, because I usually have very different ideas and yours are always looking in your very specific direction. Awesome stuff, and also - huge thanks for NOT creating filler videos just for the sake of them. I hate when it happens and they do it all the time everywhere. Not so much here. You can tell you're really into the invention and that's why you're here to tell about it. Which is great. Feels great. Thanks, greetings from Russia.

i appreciate it when you make these kinds of videos with serum. Thank you. When you showed the resonances in the samples i immediately thought comb filter and then when you didn’t use it until the end i was like “hey what gives?” lol

I'm really glad to see this video! The energy transferring from the lower harmonics to the higher is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. I used to have access to a 36" gong, with a beautifully slow bloom, and have thought about possible ways to emulate that. I think that the same effect happens in a hard tom hit, but actually from the top harmonics downward, as the shockwave from the hit bounces off the rim and gradually gets transferred into the lower harmonics. My goal is to somehow synthesize a decent timpano. Regarding the phys modeling exciter source: if you shake a loose (maybe has to be old and stretched?) timpano head which isn't mounted, that lightning-like plastic flappy noise is what I really think should be the energy going into a phys modeling system - very different from white noise.
Awesome job! You can also make a really high Q on that distortion filter (with the envelope controlling the value) and it will add a sine-y ride vibe to it. Makes it sound like a small ride plate instead.
OMG! This video is jaw-dropping! I'm so surprised and impressed by how much knowledge you've shared. Thank you so much for creating such an amazing resource!
Million thanks! I was searching for that tutorial for so so long, cymbals are the hardest thing to synthesize, and the main thing I was missing in my sample pack! this, together with your "making punchy drums in serum" tutorial are the best tutorials about sound designing drums, I would really love you to continue that and explain how to make more drum types, like percussion and maybe rims (like acoustic sounding snares or just rims) :)
One request that would be really helpful is a tutorial on making impacts with serum. I've seen a couple tutorials using convolution reverbs, but I'm sure you have some unique tips and tricks(if you wouldn't mind sharing)
This is genius. Some of the stuff you pointed out here inspired me to make a patch for "howling wind" SFX, which I've been wanting to use in a track. It's a work in progress, but I think it will work!
Keep doing tutorial's !! Im about to get my computer then I can finally make music i see in my head with your help . you're a true Celestial Artist ❤🙅✨
Thank you for sharing this in-depth view. One of the advantages of your approach is the ever varying sound quality of the percussion, it keeps the sound moving and interesting...
So basically, just create your own noise AND use particular filters and audio effects to shape the timbre of that noise over time... Alongside the conventional volume shaping that is customary amongst cymbal sound design videos...
I figured it out when Current Value began to obviously use extreme unisons for anything in his tracks with his crazy signature sound (also Image-Line had a cymbal plugin years ago to do that kind of stuff - I don't remember the name tho, it's likely legacy by now). Thanks for the clear in-depth walkthru !
I found a much faster method using the "combs" filter with a sharp transient, passing it through multiple times. including "Comb +/-". in a chain with some frequency shifting. It makes it a little more electronic sounding, but they can be incredibly punchy if paired with proper compression.
The comb thing is called karplus-strong synthesis and it is quite widely used in string synthesis exc. If you make cymbals with that technique, you will likely get too ”harmonic” results compared to this fm technique. At least in my oppinnion.
@@alexmoscatelli149 yeah also if you know how to do one thing that info then just clicks with everything else. It's sort of like maths but much more creative lol
That's a great lesson. 👍 But I do it all on VITAL, and I can't achieve such a result, very quickly the sound turns into noise, it's very difficult to find the golden mean when the sound is metallic and not too noisy. You can make interesting cymbals on VITAL, but they don't sound like your SERUM, unfortunately. At least I didn't manage to achieve it, although I adjusted the unison settings in very different combinations.
I think you accidentally came close to the secret of SOPHIE metallic percussions, I pretty much Strayed from the tutorial and ended up with sounds similar to SOPHIE metallic sounds, the unison range ingredient & also modulating the coarse on both oscillators made all the difference there. maybe you should do a SOPHIE tutorial style 😉
Great video like always! We love these videos and nice serum skin!! Thanx again for these amazing videos they really help out so much! Keep up the amazing work and have a great day!
This is a really interesting concept and ends up sounding really good! Perhaps there's a few extra details in the acoustic cymbal recordings that could also be recreated in Serum, but whether that's important depends on the context they're intended to be used in. Really awesome work as usual, Au5! I'm also working through your song walkthroughs in School of Bass and I'm looking forward to watching your Serum masterclass too. I really appreciate these amazing tutorial videos on your channel, please keep making them! 💪
3:55 damn, I already recognise cymbal qualities in this sound. I never used frequency splitted oscilloscopes (or whatever that is called) but in this time frame, you have also convinced me how useful it is. Especially to analyse "model"sounds, you use. I think FL's Edison is capable of that kinda visualization too. Four minutes in and you already game me enough to dive into synthesis (via Vital in my case but that translates very easily from Serum ^^). But I am curious in what more you have to say. Back to the video. 🤣
