I don't agree with the idea of having a 1 press instant sprint and snappier movement. It ruins the complexity and fun of getting momentum and sticking landings with skill the first game rewarded you with. Now it's essentially a GPS follow the red line game where u snap like a magnet to the nearest ledge. If you have the first game on PC, you can use mods to unlock higher frame rates, disable mouse smoothing, and increase FOV all which make the experience a 1000x better
Awesome video! Somehow I had the prequel comic but never played Catalyst. Great to finally have context for all that. Really enjoyed the presentation here and the occasional Ed, Edd n Eddy sound effect xD
Really enjoy your content dude, I don’t really care about the series but I’ll watch anything you put out cause I like the way you do these sorts of vids
That's nice of you to say and I do apricate that! I've a few creators like that myself, where I just enjoy their content enough to want to listen anyway. On the other hand, Mirror's Edge is now done so there's that! Onto the next thing!
New Petronious content is always a good thing, nice to finally see this up. Catalyst always took a weird turn because it's a reboot of the first Mirror's Edge, still a good experience though.
The interesting part about the visuals is that in catalyst, they do look better. But the first game's colour choice was so simple that it was a lot easier to see where to go. While in Catalyst, it's harder to see where to go. Not without the red line guiding you
Two solid Mirror's Edge reviews in time for the original game's 15th Anniversary. Impressive stuff as always, dude. I'm digging the Marvel T-Shirt too. 27:38 Suitable Name for Faith
honestly if we were to ever get a 3rd game of the seires i would like it to be more or a MMO where story is not the main focus but game play was i would love to have a character creator and a less intrusive skill tree but from what we got yeah i like to boot up these two games from time to time i do wish there was a NEW GAME+ for catalyst cause i was someone that DID went out of there way to 100% and beyond with catalyst even setting some rather compeative time trial scores but after all that was done there was just nothing left the city of glass was a empty playground and no way to start again and to carry my stats over from the current play through
I remember hearing that Mirror's Edge Catalyst missed the mark for a lot of people when it came out but never really knew why until watching your video. You definitely had a rereshing take during this video that encourages me to give both games a shot some day. They've both got such a unique art style and gameplay. Great video!
This kinda reminds me of Hover in a very loose way. Hover was a different first person open world parkour platformer. Hover was more Jet Set Radio inspired but was a fun little gem.
I've not played Catalyst so I don't have a proper opinion on it, but one thing I will say is that lately there's so many existing series getting reimagined as open world experiences that it's easy to get fatigued by it all. It almost feels like some kind of big budget mandate to slap on the box as a selling point. The idea of Mirrors Edge specifically getting an open world game does sound enjoyable at face value, but with how many open world games there are to play out there I find it's the more linear experiences that feel the most refreshing these days, and they also tend to feel higher quality. As backwards as it sounds at first, more linear levels allow the devs to put a lot more thought into their design. The best example that comes to mind off the top of my head is Half-Life 2 or even Black Mesa (The fanmade HL1 remake), which expertly craft their environments to feel natural and explorable while still generally amounting to linear pathways. They expertly give off the illusion of being much bigger and less restricted than they really are, and benefit greatly from that immersion. Because the general trend is for you to not visit the same location twice, and when you do things are quite different in contrast to when you visited them before, the whole thing ends up feeling like a much more memorable adventure than most open world games have managed to produce in my opinion, with a few exceptions.
THAT PIGEON GAG *trick sfx* 😂 After years of wondering "what was this game even LIKE?", I finally have a comprehensive answer. The FOV might not agree with my motion sickness, but I was enthralled in this review. ... ... ... DUM BADUM BAH DAH DUH BAH DUH BAAAAAAAAH
@@Petronious That's so good to hear, thank you for your hard work. I happened to be rewatching some of your older videos, and really enjoy how organic the flow is, the editing style and your personality. Hope life treats you well. Cheers mate!
Yup, played Catalyst back in those years and it was big nothing burger to me. It looked like the first, and played a bit like the first, but I wasn't a huge fan of its story and open world. That made me sad b/c I wanted to love this game, really, but I just couldn't. I loved the first game back then, but this sequel...this wasn't it.
This game was great for game pass but it's honestly one and done, the first game l felt was meh, not worth the hype after buying it from a charity shop, l will say that the final level is AMAZING and honestly wish the entire game was like that. though l guess if it was it would be dull. Also l kinda get sad of first person games like this not having atleast one jumpscare, it's become a trend for me.
The revival that no one really brings up.
Sad I'm heading into work but I got something for later!!

New petronious in my sub box = I have my next 30ish minutes planned out
I’m kinda surprised it’s only been 7 years. Feels closer to 10 for me!
Really? I'm surprised it was 7 years. I thought it was like 4 years ago lol
Loved the first one. Second one was so forgettable.

I'm more subtle with the EEnE sound effect usage these days so it's nice to see someone still notice them 😁

Yeah it's definitely a good example of how far a refined artistic style can go a lot further than a technical graphical improvement

Really enjoyed both ME installments. Great video, mate!

Never missed any of your content, never will. Keep it up, we're here for you.
Thanks very much, that's nice of you to say!
Working on another video at the moment 🙂

"It became a classic in the long *run* "
I see what you did there
Also I love the Stanley parable reference
You made me want to go and try the games now. Cheers, Pete. 👌
Apparently i own this on steam. Im not sure how i got it but i do. I might need to play it as i think it seems kinds fun just running about.

So naturally, we're overdue for another reboot revival around now, right? :P
Any day now

Take my comment for the algorithm 😊
I can't enjoy Catalyst! I've tried but it doesn't click with me
