I ordered 3 Combo Green Peak Stove/Petrel Pot Combos from Fire Maple for me & the family. I got 12% off and free shipping. With tax it was $120 total for 3 kits. Great deal…less than the price of 1 Jetboil. 😎 I watched your video after I had ordered, so I could’ve saved a few more bucks with your code. Thanks for the comparison and review!
That might be one of the best comparisons I've heard; three for the price of one! The combo you and I both got is my new favorite. I didn't bring my Jetboil out at all this year! Keep the code in mind; it works for any order from Fire Maple you might want to make in the future! Thanks for watching
...HORESE FOR COURSES... The Jetboil flash is awesome for heating (Pre-cooked boil in the bag meals) The Petrel is great to use for (Just add hot Freeze Dried meals) and hot drinks.
That's a good way to say it. I like my Jetboil and still have it. I did sell my Jetboil Stash after this summer due to the Petrel being such a solid pot and the Green Peak stove working so well.
Thanks for that comparison. The Jetboil is a staple of hiking for a good reason and it’s introduced some really good features to the market. I like what the Petrel does and I think I’ll get one after seeing your demo. I’m going to combine it with an Optimus clip-on windshield and make a cozy for it for even better efficiency.
You're welcome! I'm really glad that this comparison was helpful. I just brought this combo on my backpacking trip to Upper Pioneer Basin. I was super impressed at how quickly water boiled at 10,800 feet elevation! I think the heat exchanger on this pot is a game changer.
nice review, I recently bought the jetboil because price in this case happened to be a non-factor, but looking at the two, I like how the Fire Maple locks it's lid with the handle. A couple of differences I also noticed was that with the JetBoil I can just lift my pot and it brings the whole thing around, and secondly it would be nice if there was some kind of rubber lip so you can drink from the pot directly. I really like that the fire maple's burner just locks into place with the cup, very nice. the fire maple also looks a decent bit lighter, probably honestly better for backpacking

Gongrats on the Jetboil. It won’t let you down. I’ve used MiniMo almost daily for three years on and off the trail. It has not failed once. Edit: Looking to go lighter with Petrel + Soto WindMaster combo. 🤞
@@snaxpy thank you for the encouragement. It was really difficult for me because I really do love my jet boil. I think I just have an affinity for it. I was really surprised at how well the fire maple did
I really like my jet boil. One thing that was surprising to me in this video is that it took like 40 clicks for my PO to work in my jet boil. I need to figure out what’s causing that malfunction. I’ve never had that experience before.
Adding to my previous review. I noticed you placed the fuel canister into the pot as I have always done, UNTIL ! now, I saw a hack on another channel, the canister does indeed scrape the pot so from now on simply wrap the canister. Buen Camino
i use my jetboil for long distance travels . it's enough to cook 2 person meal . But 600ml Maple sounds like a good idea for light bikepacking trips . id would put 100 gr gas canister with all stuf for tea and maybe titanium cup as well
I like to bring my jetboil when I take my kids out. The neoprene sleeve (or whatever it is) provides some peace of mind against burns. I’m doing the JMT next month and think I’ll bring the Jetboil stash but then bring the Fire Maple for a shorter trip in September to see how it does.

I'm going to bring it on the JMT with me this this year so I can refuel my small can from someone's half full can.
I would choose the Fire Maple over the Jetboil any day of the week. Especially over Jetboil versions that do not have control over the flame intensity - those are literally just for boiling water, you can't even make pasta in them without high risk of burning something. Add the benefits of the Fire Maple being lighter and cheaper. Plus the fire maple's handle is stiff, and I can't figure out when the Jetboil wins.
That is such a good point. The Fire Maple has flame control. I was with a buddy who tried to cook in his Jetboil and it just stuck to the sides. Jetboils selling point is the ability to boil water. That is great if you're brining pre-packaged meals. I normally need to carry a Bear vault when backpacking and that means that I need to repackage and make my own meals to keep down on volume of food. I really like the Petrel!
I really like having access to affordable stand alone pots with heat exchangers without having to purchase an entire cannister stove "system". But I personally would stay away from the FM stoves/lanterns etc. I've personally experienced issues with FM's quality control around their fuel valve systems and have read too many reviews citing very early piezo igniter failures. A Chinese made "cheap as you can make it" aluminum pot with virtually no moving parts and no "critical" components that can fail is one thing. A stove with a tight tolerance fuel valve and igniter system made the same way is another thing altogether IMO.
I really like the pot with the heat exchanger. I've thought about pairing the pot with the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe. I like to have a piezo igniter on my stove but always bring a lighter for a back up. I think the Green Peak stove is better than their earlier stoves for sure. I want to test their lantern next and see how that functions in the outdoors
@@NealBenson I picked up one of the lanterns (against my better judgement after having issues with a stove). I really like the candle style light it throws.....but it too has a valve issue. It's so hard to turn I almost have to bend the bailing wire handle to get it to rotate and it resists shutting all the way off and snuffing the flame unless I reeef on the valve WAY harder than I should have to....which means I don't really trust it enough to leave it on the fuel canister. So for me, Fire Maple is 0 for 2 in terms of important components that rely on high quality controls and tight tolerances , That said I"m 100% with you on the pots!
@@neologian1783 Thanks for sharing that experience. That is so good to hear. I haven't used the Green Peak stove much but will see how the valve works. It's so tough getting a solid stove. I bought the BRS 3000 and decided that I don't think I'll ever use it.
I have been using Jetboil for years and trust it and it has worked for years. I just came across this video and am intrigued by lighter better, etc. but you are the first reply I've read that negatively talks about this FM stove system. I understand you to say you like the pot but not the stove? So I guess combining this FM pot with a different stove like Snow peak stove would be good?
@@dons1643 Hey Don, hope my comment didn't sound negative on the GreenPeak stove. I've been using it more and more and really like it. In this video I had MANY issues with the Jetboil piezo working. I've taken the FM set up out several times now and it's my favorite stove. I sold my Jetboil Stash but will keep my Jetboil Flash for backpacking with the kids and making coffee when car camping. Hope that helps.
My petrel did 500ml in 1m30s and also needs ti be with the right gas as the conparison wasnt the same. They do a better more powerful stove, the polaris that fits it too so is quicker and more efficient 👍
I actually did a test the day before and started the Petrel 600 first. The Jetboil took so long to ignite and the Fire Maple set up had boiled in 1:50. I was super impressed
I've been comparing the Petrel to the Toaks 650 lite, both with the Soto Windmaster TriFlex. Both boil water quickly if turned up high, but in testing fuel efficiency, they are both boiling 2 cups of water using an average of about 6.5g of fuel. I'm not seeing any significant difference between the two after dozens of boils of stream water at between 6500 and 9000 feet altitude. The Petrel is stable, holds 800ml if filled to the top, and I like how the handle folds over the top. The Toaks is quite a bit lighter (2.1 oz to 4.8 oz for the Petrel with no lids) but the handles do sometimes get hot. I use a stretch silicon lid on both, and use the lid as a pot grabber with the Toaks. I'm kinda intrigued by the Green Peak Stove and may try it. Thanks for the video, good job.
Thank you for the encouragement! And thank you for sharing your experience with how much gas each stove uses per boil. This has been something that I’ve been trying to figure out. And in my testing, I wish I would have weighed each gas can prior to the use, but it just wasn’t possible and the conditions that I was in. I also put some silicone handles on my toes handles because they get hot. I really like the petrol pot and it’s handle. I think they have a great design and I can’t wait to continue to see how this company advances in the future.
Also look at costs. Even with using the, higher priced, Windmaster, that combination is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the Jet Boil. Flash = $130. Petrel/Windmaster = $105. Petrel/Green Peak =
