I just went through this a couple weeks ago. I took two weeks off for Christmas and squared my shop up. This past year has been busy and I neglected upkeep of the shop, clearing enough space to complete a task - for over a year! Rather than making a list, I worked on shop improvement projects while cleaning the shop up. It took me over a week to get the shop cleaned up, but it came out nice.
That’s awesome!! Dang you had a lot of projects last year then, which is also awesome! Knocking out your list as you make it is a great idea since you carved out time to take care of all of it
Great video! I struggle with this in my small shop as well. Especially during a multi day or week project. Plus my garage shop has regular garage stuff still in it, so that doesn't help.
Thank you so much! Yeah those long term projects take a toll for sure. Plus regular garage stuff doesn’t help either. I managed to isolate all of our kids’ stuff to an “in garage shed”, but that wouldn’t work for something like a vehicle
I might just have to do that, great idea! Oddly enough, the handyman one might be more difficult at least for me since those are my least favorite projects. Hobby ones though? Those get me going!!
Hi That was an epic workshop org video. Just found your channel and worthy of a subscription. I will check out more of your videos and I look forward to the next one. Regards James One Handed Maker - Australia
I like the video BUT some of us, do not have a large shop to start with!! Myself, my work area is literally outside in front of my tool shed/workshop, so a lot of the work I do, requires me hauling everything I own outside in nice weather, do my work, then load it all back inside for safe keeping!! It is kind of a pain... BUT it also requires THAT I constantly put things away as I use them OR never getting things out I don't need in the first place!! And any items that I have that "comes out of my shop" are constantly put back immediately after I am done on a project, or I will never find them again!!
Oh wow! That’s a lot of moving back and forth, but fantastic that you’re so organized! Wish I was that diligent with putting things back. Do you have anything that helps with setup or keeping things together while you’re working outside?
Should I be able to edit your Notion template, or is it just a read-only file that is used to create my own? I do not seem to be able to add new items or edit yours. Thx.
Fantastic question! In the top right corner, it should let you duplicate it to your notion account. Once it’s there, it should let you edit absolutely everything. I’ll add that to the template as well. Thanks for asking! If that doesn’t work, I’ll find out why (my first Notion template and I might have missed a setting somewhere).
@Slabysz oh awesome!! Glad it worked!! If you think of anything that would make it better or that I can do to help, please let me know! Definitely want the templates to be as useful as possible and open to any feedback
My OCD and ADD friends could not do this. Most would fail after step 3! Me, I'd begin to falter at step 2.... my big work surface is full! But, I like your ideas. Wish I could move all my benches!
Haha! I hear you. It definitely FEELS super counterintuitive until it all starts going back. Had to fight my own combo of OCD/ADHD to push through it (audiobooks help). Yeah, casters on just about everything is HUGE! One of the things I’m most glad I’ve done
@@SouthernStyleDIY I actually think this approach would *help* with my ADHD. It would mean I can block all the noise of need to make this storage, need to change that thing out and just get everything into one place and then move on from there. The noise would still be there but with a fixed task of get everything onto my workbench it becomes easier to push that noise out, or at least make it quieter. Just goes to show that the way one person is affected by ADHD and good coping mechanisms is different to somebody else. Makes each no less valid or correct. My real issue would be, how do I make the required storage and things as I put stuff back in step 6 when my workbench/outfeed table is full of all my crap 🙂 Enjoyed the video though and lots of good and interesting tips
@welshwoodco thanks so much! You’re definitely right about how everyone gets impacted a little differently. All part of the fun right? Honestly, what I’ve also done before is clear some floor space off to the side and/or put some kind of temporary thing together. Cheap sawhorses and a decent sized offcut of plywood can work in a pinch. Then you can see everything and not worry about cluttering up what you’re trying to clean
A perfect workshop isn’t getting enough use haha! It’s always a constant process. A little here and there goes a long way. It can certainly be tough to tackle when it becomes too much.
How do you keep track of your projects? Paper or digital?

i need to tackle some shop organization. thanks for putting together this list.
It’s always top of mind at the beginning of the year (or after 5 or 6 projects). Absolutely! Anything you think I missed?

You should do a beginners shop guide! Or starter tools 101. One for general handyman and one for hobby projects
I might just have to do that, great idea! Oddly enough, the handyman one might be more difficult at least for me since those are my least favorite projects. Hobby ones though? Those get me going!!
You speak the truth sir.
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
A video I need to watch thank you
Anytime!! Hope it helps!

@ step 4, tip for cleaning after you sweep/vacuum up, take your leaf blower & blow your shop out. Be surprised how much you missed 😂
That's a fantastic tip! I forgot about the leaf blower, thanks so much!!

I have two projects. Easy so far
Nice!! Keep it up!

@NewTestamentDoc thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!
My shop is a cluttered, useless shit hole..
I don't hove the power to sort it out.
All i can do is watch people make stuff in perfect workshops.

You're adorable 😉
Why thank you!
