Pretty sure the guy cares more about his wife than he does about the sword. The way he said "my wife should get what she wants" didnt make it sound like she was nagging him at all, he probably just wants to make her happy by giving her something she wants, instead of keeping some old junk sword that he has no use for.
I'd say get it restored and take it to an auction. The provenance and the restoration will get you closer to that 20k mark. Granted you'd have to sink a couple hundred to get the work done, but its value is undeniable
