A reminder that people handle grief differently. There were times I didn’t cry until weeks later when it sunk in they were gone.

It hits you when it hits you. I found out about an ex who died years before, and I was shocked but didn't cry, figuring, ehh... he was just an ex. A few days later, it hit me while I was cooking and I broke down. The brain/heart are weird like that.

I just think that it hadn't hit her yet. But when it did, you could tell that she was hurt. Plus, she had to stay strong for the community. It would've been very difficult to celebrate the life of James if Florida was constantly crying. She had to be a strong host.

I don’t think Thelma wanted to make her cry she was wondering why Florida was being festive instead of grieving. Thelma and Michael were still too young to understand how and why people felt differently from others when losing a love one. Some people put on a brave front to keep themselves from breaking down in front of others.

3:44 Thelma was completely unfair. Florida only said that she doesn't need to justify to anyone how she reacts to James' death, including Thelma and Michael. She never said that Thelma and Michael were wrong about how they're reacting. Just that she mourns in her own way. She didn't say Thelma and Michael were wrong about how they reacted.
The only judgey ones in this video are Thelma and Michael. Even J. J. showed an uncharacteristic maturity in accepting how Florida grieves.

My sister is disabled and has never been able to cry unless she is in pain. But with emotional pain she can't cry. Even when we lost our mother and father she didn't cry.
We knew she was suffering though.

People in the comment section have no sympathy or empathy for Thelma or Michael, they're young and just lost their father and don't understand how grief works in children.

01:39 BULL! Surviving family members and friends do not laugh and shout happily when a family member is killed in an accident! This is terrible writing by Norman Lear and his writing team. Despite Florida's triple cursing at the end, the relatives of both parents should have been there to give heartfelt consolation to the bereaved family. This scene could have done much better. Norman Lear was quite happy to fire John Amos and it shows.

Some people grieve in different ways. This is how it was back in the day. People didn’t know how to just be them themselves. They had to be forced to do something. They didn’t want to do. These children didn’t understand why their mother was not emotional about her husband being killed, but we know better now and this is a program now a good episode.

What Ms. Florida said was true, not only in Africa but in New Orleans. They actually have a small parade for the deceased with a horn section and drums. They celebrate the life.

Florida got a good point. Whatever you believe in, we celebrate the life they lived, not cry about their death. We cry because our whoever is no longer with us.
In the Christian faith, I believe that loved ones who no longer with us, we shall see them again in glory.

I like John Amos, but all James did was yell, and I was glad they got him off the show for that, If you notice, Thelma and J.J. yelling at each other decreased greatly after his departure. With the departure of James, Wilona's character developed greatly, and I thought she was terrific.
