It's pretty hard not to get the kinda stuff they were going for from an album literally labeled "plastic beach" The Gorillaz have almost always been about this type of stuff.

The day this came out was a SHIT SHOW. The dislikes were through the roof and everyone was furious that the forst Gorillaz single in 5 years wasnt the next Clint Eastwood. I had expectations (because of DoYaThing) that this would be a bit more "pop-y." Then, the video started playing and I got a surprise.
I realized what they were going for aesthetically, so I didn't immediately hate it. I knew many others would hate it, though.
It turns out the song is very groovy and sentimental. It actually is a fitting amalgam of the tone of Damon Albarn's recent album "Everyday Robots," and the Gorillaz' last studio album, "Plastic Beach."
In fact, the sound is almost identical to Plastic Beach, except much more subtle. It plays like a more polished track from The Fall.
It's an appropriate way to address recent events.

I’m still convinced the massive backlash to this album was just straight up because Gorillaz’s white “alt punk” fanbase wasn’t “punk” enough to not be massive racists. This is my all time favourite Gorillaz album, and I wish all the collaborators knew how important it was and still is to me. Especially this song. Benjamin Clementine, you are so talented and this is so beautiful. Your lyricism and vocal performance was the best on the entire album. Thank you for this song and your work.

Still the best song on Humanz. It’s haunting, unique, and filled with great emotion. This IS Gorillaz to me. This was the only song that came out on Humanz that made me feel like I was 15 again finding them for the first time with great conviction with their message. Fuck everyone who hated on this song with bias and confusion in their heart. Benjamin deserved so much more and I hope he can learn to love this project again as the years go by.

Gorillaz have always been about diversity, warnings of consumerism and division, if you don't like this track because of that... You were never a Gorillaz fan. So many of their previous tracks have had political messages and this isn't even a single, just a track made for the inauguration tomorrow.
Go listen through their albums then tell me this is shocking or new for them... the production on this is similar to the fall, the structure is similar to many tracks on their debut, it has elements of demon days and plastic beach as well.

I always thought the Gorillaz wouldn't be that big of an influence in my life. That was me around me REALLY early years, around 5-6?
Now that I've matured more and more, I realize the messages Albarn entails in the songs from all of Gorillaz's discography and I realize how honest and how simple of a band they are.
While their music doesn't appeal to all people, it appeals to me. Hallelujah Money, while, like I said, doesn't appeal to all, it appeals to me because of how honest and emotional it is.
plus Spongebob's crying made me sad for two reasons, one because it represents America's fear of the elected, and two because of the cartoon's downfall. 1998/9 were the years.

I don't get why people are saying that this is nothing at all like Gorillaz. This has vibes that bring me back to "Don't Get Lost In Heaven" from the album Demon Days. Also, with the lyrics about corruption, subliminal imagery in the music video, and having an amazing singer feature in this, this easily made my top ten Gorillaz songs. Not only for its lyrics ( those are good too) but for the vibe and message that it brings to the table.

I've never really liked this song until listening to the whole album with it on repeat for context. I quite enjoy this song now, it fits so nicely at the end of that craziness - not so much by itself I feel. If there was one fault in the Humanz brilliant marketing campaign, it was releasing effectively the last two songs of the album first. I feel, had it not been for that music video really confusing expectations, Hallelujah Money would have really hit me harder on my initial listen.
That's the thing with half the songs on this album, alone they're pretty weak, but with the context of being in the album their points stand strong
I think the marketing for the album would've done much better had Humanz been released about half a year before it did. That way, they could still release this song and its music video the day before Trump's inauguration if they really wanted to, but without both spoiling the end of the album before it's released and without making a lot of fans feel gypped after 7 years of waiting (and Damon also wouldn't have felt compelled to sloppily censor Let Me Out).
Saturnz Barz would've been the perfect song and music video to release first after the many years of nothing.

In my opinion: This sounds like something off of The Fall which is the weakest Gorillaz release. I absolutely love all the other albums and b-sides, but The Fall fell flat for me. I can respect the time, effort and artistic creativity to put this together, but I'm just not feeling the music or vocals on this one. I was hoping Damon was going in a more "Do Your Thing" route, but I can't speak for the rest of the album. By the way, I'm personally still waiting for "P-Sides." Jamie has stated that there's another album worth of unreleased material from Plastic Beach, so hopefully we'll see that eventually. Either way, I'm so glad Gorillaz are back again.

it's really sad that people didn't get this track when it first came out. it has the pure escence of gorillaz even without damon's voice in it, it kinda reminds me of "fire coming ou of the monkeys head" in terms of ~vibes. it could've been a fan favorite, it has everything to be a fan favorite, but the fans not only didn't like this but the way they reacted to it was FOUL. i always loved this song, even back then.
